Equipment Sunil Arora visits JCB plant in Jaipur Sunil Arora, Secretary, Department of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Government of India, visited the JCB Jaipur factory. JCB India recently inaugurated its newest facility in Jaipur. Built on 115 acres of land, just 35 km from the Jaipur city, the site is home to JCB’s single largest manufacturing footprint in India.

Component manufacturing is already underway at this new plant and production of telescopic handlers and skid steer loaders for the Indian market will begin later this year or early part of next year. This facility will also provide additional backhoe loader capacity in times to come.

When operating at full capacity, this factory will employ around 1,000 people and a large part of this manpower will be recruited locally from nearby government polytechnics, ITIs and other private polytechnics.

Alstom to provide solutions for Kochi metro

CDC announces $25m boost to Indian logistics infrastructure

Alstom has been awarded two contracts worth over €65 million from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to supply signaling, telecom and electrification solutions for the new Kochi metro line. The projects will be implemented in early 2016 and commercial service for first section is scheduled to begin in March 2016.

Twenty five Alstom metropolis trains will circulate on the new Kochi metro line which is 25-km long and includes 22 stations. In the beginning, these trains will carry up to 15,000 passengers per hour and direction.

Alstom is in charge of the design, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of Urbalis 400, its communication-based train control solution. In addition, Alstom will provide an integrated telecom solution comprising of radio, CCTV, passenger information display system, passenger announcement system and giga bit network to guarantee comfort and security of passengers.

CDC, the UK’s development finance institution (DFI), is making a $25 million direct investment in Pristine Logistics, a growing Indian company that develops and operates vital infrastructure to transport and handle railway freight in rural and under-served parts of the country.

Pristine Logistics is developing, constructing and operating greenfield rail freight terminals across northern, central and eastern India, where infrastructure is important for economic growth. The terminals provide handling, warehousing and transport services for businesses using the Indian Railways network for freight transport. The company also plans to develop a food park in Bihar to handle and process agricultural products, bringing market connectivity to the region.

Commenting on the announcement, Rajnish Kumar, Director, Pristine Logistics, said, “CDC is a natural investment partner for us and this development will unlock the full potential of Pristine.”

The food park in Bihar will create a further 1,800 jobs. The lack of fast, reliable and temperature-controlled transportation means that many Bihar farmers cannot bring their produce to market. The food park will bring much-needed food processing, storage and modern transport services to local farming communities.

CDC will also support Pristine Logistics as the company develops its procedures around environmental and social policies. In this way, CDC can contribute to the sustainable development of the company and build management capability in this field.

Building Material Sanghi to invest ` 250 cr in renewable energy and port development Sanghi Industries Ltd. will invest ` 250 crore over next couple of years with a focus on sustainable development, innovation and conservation of energy. The company is going to invest ` 150 crore for developing 15-MW waste heat recovery system and another ` 100 crore to further develop its facilities at Navlakhi Port in Gujarat.

Sanghi Industries has signed a contract for installation of waste heat recovery system at its cement plant in Kutch, Gujarat whereby 15 MW power will be generated from the waste gases released in the air.

With this technology, the valuable fossil fuel will be saved, foreign exchange will be saved and there will be a significant reduction in the emission of pollutant gases viz. CO2 and SO2. Sanghi will recover more than 70 per cent of waste heat generated from its cement manufacturing plant.

The board had approved the acquisition of cement business of Jaiprakash Associates Ltd. (JAL) situated in Bela and Sidhi in Madhya Pradesh, having a capacity of 4.9 mtpa together with 180 MW TPP. UltraTech and JAL have entered into a definitive agreement for this acquisition which will propel the company’s cement capacity in India from 60 mtpa to 65 mtpa. With its current projects underway, the capacity in India will stand raised to 71 mtpa in 2016.

UltraTech will issue non-convertible debentures worth ` 4,538 crore and non-convertible cumulative redeemable preference shares worth ` 10 lakh. As part of the business, the company will take over ` 626.50 crore of debt and negative working capital of ` 160.50 crore.

The transaction with JAL is subject to the approval of shareholders and creditors, sanction of the Scheme of Arrangement by the High Courts, approval of the Competition Commission of India and other statutory approvals. It is anticipated that the transaction will close in 7 to 9 months.

It is very significant as this industry requires huge amount of investment which would require help from the private firms in the country as well as outside. The private sector has invested $225 billion in India’s infrastructure projects between 2007 and 2012, much of it through PPPs.

by US Department of Energy, the country doubled its floor space between 2001 and 2005 and is expected to add 35 billion sq. metres of new buildings by 2050.”

Even Ramesh Tipirneni, Country Manager, Caterpillar India, thinks the same. He remarks, “An increase in domestic demand created by an urbanising population and continued growth and development will benefit the entire industrial sector.”

GDP growth The growth of Indian economy slipped from 10.5 per cent in 2010 to 4.8 per cent in 2013. In the past few years, delayed decision making has led to negative growth and sentiment. Lack of quick decision making and clearances from land acquisition and environment has brought the wheels to a near standstill.

According to Mr Rao, “The 12th Plan, which started in 2013 looks set to include $1 trillion for infra development, with around 50 per cent of this likely to come from private funds.”

The Indian economy, however, is going underway of gradual recovery. The nation is expected to clock a GDP growth of 5.5 per cent in the current fiscal and 6.6 per cent in FY16.

The recent interest shown by countries like Singapore, France, Dubai and Russia to invest in the smart city project and other projects is a meaningful step in that direction.

According to Dr S. P. Pandey, Deputy Executive Director, Quality Management and R&D, Dalmia Bharat Ltd., “The total construction market in India for FY14 was $157 billion, an increase of $4 billion over FY13. Infrastructure accounts for 49 per cent, housing and real estate 42 per cent and industrial projects 9 per cent. Industrial construction is contributed by expansion projects from various manufacturing sectors.”

The new rules proposed include reducing the builtup area requirement for FDI in construction projects to 20,000 sq. metres from 50,000 sq. metres. The minimum capital requirement has also been reduced to $5 million from $10 million. The new rules will make it easier for the government to attract investments to build smart cities and affordable homes in the country. It is also likely to improve the dismal infrastructure in Asia’s third largest economy.”

The TeamLease Indian Labor Report suggests that 300 million people will enter the workforce by 2025. Most important, 25 per cent of the world’s skilled workers will be Indians. This young workforce is going to drive and impact the country and organizations’ strategy in years to come.

Exploding super rich population India is also the home to 1.17 lakh ultrahigh net worth individuals, and these super-rich people are growing their wealth exponentially. India’s super rich are not only getting richer but doing it faster than most Asian countries. Between 2013 and 2014, the number of ultra-high net worth individuals in India grew by 9.49 per cent. This factor will surely augur well for the economy and the real estate market.

Infrastructure and construction industry, no doubt, hold massive potential in India. The confidence behind the promise comes from the fact that infrastructure and construction industry has witnessed exponential growth in the past and it is a part of the 5-year plan.

“The proposed increase in allocation in the 12th Plan (2012-2017) will translate into a healthy business for construction companies,” explains Dr Pandey. “According to a technical committee set up by the Ministry of Housing & Poverty Alleviation, the total provides a big investment opportunity.”

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) As per UNCTAD reports, India is being rated the second most attractive location (after China) for global FDI. In order to increase FDI inflows, particularly with a view to catalysing investment and enhancing infrastructure, the Indian Government has also introduced significant policy reforms.

It is now mediated by specialised architects. With an increase in competition, changes in technology and client expectations, the profession is at a very interesting point.

Adding value to growth There are certain challenges, and Planet 3 Studios believes that architects have to be generalist so that they can work on different kinds of formats and typologies to keep the creative sense alive in the studio. Over the time, Ar. Mattoo and his studio have understood what kind of space people not want to be in — this has been a kind of important learning for them. Planet 3 Studios doesn’t want to be in the co-modified office design. It really don’t want to be in the mark projects where architecture is merely measured in extreme efficiency in terms of sq. feet or in terms of how much volume one can build.

Planet 3 Studios is looking for projects that are of certain quality and have certain design mandate given by the client. Which also offers a certain design challenge, and Ar. Mattoo is getting enough projects like that. Lately, he has delivered a hotel in Agra. He has also finished the first phase of 1.5-million-sq.-feet

X-Factors One thing that has worked for Planet 3 Studios is the open mindedness to look at different types of projects and clients. It doesn’t come with too much of package when it comes to such projects. The studio just wants to look at how the value designing can add to a project. With that kind of open mindset, the studio has done every project.

It calls it the beginner’s mind which has a fresh prospective. The studio keeps on gently question everything that comes its way. While it does that, it does with a sense of empathy to the end users. Planet 3 Studios tries to create solutions which do things differently for its clients.

Achievements in 2014 It has been a very interesting year for Kalhan Mattoo and his studio. Planet 3 Studios finished a four-star hotel and auditorium.

He is also working on a 60-acre residential community in Indore. Within the community, there will be organic farming. Then OVO in Pune, where he won the best residential architect award, is also a very contextual project but understands the local context very well by using steel and facades systems. Then he finished the Clarient headquarter which is a 1-lakh-sq.-feet facility in Airoli, Mumbai.

The headquarter is a sort of technologically complex project and an exciting edition for his portfolio.

It’s been a year of variety of construction for Ar. Mattoo who has also created a prototype as an urban intervention. It is basically a bus stop which has been thought as an urban intervention. The bus stop has a lot of things added to it. They are thinking of doing a test operation somewhere either in Bangalore.

Across various scales and experimenting, he

has created a new kind of work station for a CEO which has the facility of audio-visual.

From a 60-acre design to projects like this, Ar. Mattoo has done all kinds of project in 2014.

Expectation from Planet 3 Studios There is a hotel project which Ar. Mattoo has started in Daman. It is a kind of project that echoes the local context in terms of the fishing community around the place, and the history of the place is a mixture of Portuguese and India heritage. He is very excited about this project and wants to see it complete in a year or two. He is also looking forward to the 60-acre project in Indore. There are also several other projects which he is working on.

Like the one in Kerala where he is echoing the traditional architecture in a contemporary way.

He is also experimenting more and more with parametrical tools to achieve the desired designs. Last year, he delivered a pool of business which was his third building in Mumbai. This year, he wants to look at adding 3-4 more buildings in Mumbai. He is currently onsite with such more interesting projects as well. These buildings are interesting for him because of the restricted nature of the development control regulation. He is trying to push the envelope when it comes to designing with excessive controls. Over the years, due to increase in population, poverty, industrialisation and growing materialism, we have lost track of achieving excellence in architecture. There was considerable deterioration in almost all spheres of life. Architecture was also at crossroads. Chandigarh offered the Indian architecture a great opportunity but that was 68 years ago. British architect Dame Jane Drew had said, “Unfortunately, no Indian politician since Nehru has really done much to use the talent available.

At the time of India’s partition in 1947, there were only two teaching institutions of architecture and about 300 qualified architects in the country to serve a population of 330 million. By the mid80s, to a maximum stretch, only 10,000 architects were available for 750 million people which worked out to one architect for every 75,000 people ─ quite a low ratio as compared to the one prevailing in developed countries like the United States and the Great Britain. But today’s India teems, with about 400 schools of architecture, turning out almost 25,000 graduates every year. The surveys indicate that India needs nearly 6.5 lakh architects in next few years to meet the demand of the country. Surely the profession is getting acceptance, and it is likely to be more acceptable to masses in next five years.

example, with the growth of law, medicine and accountancy, lawyers, doctors and chartered accountants have benefited a lot. So Ar. Surinder Bahga expects if our architecture flourishes, the architects will automatically prosper.

At present only 2 per cent of India’s buildings are designed by architects, rest are still being done by unqualified people. Public can reach architects even at small towns or village level. There will be more opportunities and more options of hiring good professionals. There can be more competition provided it remains healthy one.

X-Factors The availability of a large variety of building materials, growth of building industry, technology, awareness about architecture in general and green buildings in particular are some of the X-factors which are helping the architecture, construction and infrastructure industry.

On the other hand, deteriorating level of architectural education and calling tenders from architects against the spirit of Architects Act, 1972, are factors which are bringing bad name to architectural profession. The Union Government and Council of Architecture may consider inviting good teachers from abroad to cope with the acute shortage of good faculty in the country. When private airlines were launched in India, government permitted airlines to hire pilots from abroad. Similarly, architectural faculty can be engaged from abroad. This can be experimented to lift the standard of education. Ar. Bahga observes, allowing foreign architects to practice in India should be allowed only on mutually accepted terms. For example, foreign architects can work in India but Indian architects are not allowed there. It is unfair.

Achievements in 2014 Ar. Bahga had envisioned certain ideas and projects in the beginning of 2014. It gives a lot of satisfaction if one’s dreams get translated into reality. In 2014, he had completed three projects; namely, Red Cross Bhawan in Chandigarh, Red Bishop Convention Centre in Panchkula and Agro Mall in Rohtak. In these projects, he has

made an attempt to relate these buildings to site and surroundings having concern for environment.

As a councillor in Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC), he played a key role in conceptualising and implementation of over bridge, underground multi-level parking and construction of MC head office in Sector 17 besides a school in sector 49 in Chandigarh.

It is surely going to benefit the citizens in many ways and give a completed look to Le Corbusier’s commercial district of Sector 17.

He had organised an International conference on Habitable Built Environment called “Niche-2014” at LPU, Jalandhar. It was the first such conference of this level in Punjab.

In his own projects, he is sincerely trying to design building envelope, HVAC, public health and electrical services to make them energy efficient. He is working on CT University, Jagraon in Punjab having 16-lakh-sq.-feet covered area. It is to be built up on 37-acre site. Buildings are kept high-rise to facilitate more parking at ground levels. Special care has been taken to facilitate phasing and future expansion of the campus. In another project of Town Centre at TDI City, Panipat, he has two pockets. One pocket consists of showrooms and shops while the other pocket will accommodate showrooms at lower levels and three multiplexes on upper levels.

Expectations in 2015 Ar. Bahga is involved in drafting Punjab Energy Conservation Building Code which is likely to be implemented in Punjab. Talks are going on with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency for training staff related to local bodies like municipal corporations and councils, improvement trusts and other stakeholders like architects, engineers, planners and builders.

In order to realise the dream of Prime Minister to build smart cities in country, he along with other prominent architects are organising National Conference on “Rediscovering Cities” to be held at the School of Architecture, MMU, Ambala (Haryana) on 10-11 April, 2015.

Achievements in 2014 STUP have been able to bag major infrastructure projects in India and abroad during 2014. Riyadh Metro Project’s park and ride facilities are one of them. STUP had many interesting design challenges in 2014.

For example, during construction of one of the metro stations, STUP received a notice from the client to change the station to an interchange station which meant major design and construction impacts. STUP was able to redesign the station without any major construction impacts. This not only fulfilled the client’s requirements, it also saved major reconstruction costs to the client. Gambia’s parliament building has been handed over to Gambian Government during 2014. STUP has also bagged UP Police headquarters building design in Lucknow along with Ahmedabad Metro project design.

Expectation in 2015 In 2015, STUP is expecting more metros designs to be delivered along with roads, highways, city infrastructure planning and headquarters for some of the government organisations. n

India and architecture In simple term, the word “profession” means an expertise in a particular area. People turn to professionals when they want to do a particular thing and do not know how to go about. It is true that architectural profession is gaining acceptance in India. About two or three decades back, this profession was not really looked up to. In villages nobody needed an architect. It was a local mason who used to guide about arrangements of various rooms. At best a local government surveyor would draw a plan at a very meagre fee.

Recently Ar. Porwal learnt that in Nasik Industrial Area, the practice of getting drawings approved from the authority will be stopped and architects would be made responsible for what they do. As a doctor does not need confirmation from any other body to prescribe medication or a lawyer does not confirm with any other authority while giving advice to the clients, an architect doesn’t need to be obliged to any such authorities for executing the design, he feels.

The committee head was shocked to hear this fee and said that in the neighbouring district town there is a person who makes the drawing for just ` 500. In BMC, Ar. Sanjay Porwal supposes they still have provision for plans to be signed by a surveyor. This trend is definitely now declining. Architecture is now gaining respect and more and more people are turning towards professional architect or professional interior designer to do up their houses or office.

Growing value to Kalayojan Architects Most of Kalayojan’s projects have been outside Mumbai where the firm found greater sense of freedom, creative approach and heartfelt design-based solutions due to lesser restrictions by building regulations. Kalayojan not only excelled in such projects but also won certain design awards. With larger acceptance of architecture as profession and given greater freedom, its kind of practice will gain more importance even in metros like Mumbai.

Post independence, in the PWD- and BMCdominated culture, the civil engineer has majorly dominated over a professional architect. Even now the building plans in the BMC are approved by engineers and not architects. Hence one can see the buildings in the metros are more bye-laws oriented rather than design oriented. The creativity of the architect would find a place only in elevation. Hence largely in metro cities like Mumbai architecture is limited to being just skin deep. Whereas the buildings are planned by the bye-laws and building regulations, there could be body of architects (just like we had Urban Arts Commission in New Delhi) which approves the plan for its design and for its effect and impact in its neighbourhood

Favourite projects to design Ar. Sanjay Porwal wishes that he can build a very tall building in Mumbai. When we see the Kanchenjunga Building of Charles Correa at Kemps Corner, Mumbai, there is no other building compared to that. Charles didn’t need any other tall building in Mumbai to make his presence felt. Kalayojan wants to build a tall building in Mumbai because whatever projects it is doing is horizontal designs. Its structures rarely go five-storey high because of the campus projects that it does. Kalayojan looks forward to building more technology-oriented buildings. Since more developers engage architects for full service on their projects, the more they will realise the value. Finally, India is experiencing growth as a tourist destination, and the need for development of resorts and lodges in areas rich in wild life as being high on the agenda for the next 5 years.

The profession, which is considered to be elite and remain confined to the boundaries of larger metropolises, has also started getting recognition in small and medium towns and rural areas. Increasing access to the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) has helped in creating awareness among people about the role of architects as a professional distinct from engineers in creating built environment.

With India adopting a policy of globalisation, liberalisation and opening of economy, major growth and development is going to be witnessed in urban areas. India is also treading on the path of rapid urbanisation with 10 million people being added to urban areas on annual basis. Studies made by the McKinsey Global City, in respect of future urbanisation in India, has reported that country will need to add 700-900 million square metres of built space to its cities every year (equivalent to creating a city like Chicago), to meet the needs for human living, working and leisure of increased urban population.

Accordingly, architects will have much larger professional opportunities. With the government launching the programme of developing 100 smart cities, these cities will provide opportunities hitherto not known to the profession. Recent announcement made

Year 2014 also marked the conclusion of the “Draft Master Plan Chandigarh-2031” as an expert on the project. During this year, syllabus and course contents for the under-graduate level architecture were finalised as the Chairman of the Board of Studies for the Punjab Technical University.

In addition, a number of research papers were prepared and presented in the area of smart cities, designing green and intelligent building, promoting sustainable transportation and planning in the north-west states of India.

Expectation in 2015 The year 2015, Ar. Gupta sees a year of opportunities in the realm of planning and designing smart cities, in the academics, both as an advisor, teacher and researcher for the post/undergraduate courses in architecture and working on different areas of research in planning, designing and management of human settlements and built environment. He looks forward to 2015, as year of great learning, value addition and education in the domain of architecture. n

X-Factors There are large numbers of factors governing the quality of profession of architecture which include the quality of education, research and development, professional ethics, sincerity, commitment, service delivery and quality of professionals. However, the X-factors in the profession remain the quality of education and research and development. Historically, all professions have survived and grown purely on the basis of quality of professionals serving it. Quality of professionals is determined, primarily and essentially, by the quality of people joining the profession and quality of education imparted. Unfortunately, in the profession of architecture, quality of education has emerged as the major casualty with large-scale commercialisation of architectural education.

A number of architectural institutions have mushroomed in the country (387 in 2014). Majority of these institutions suffer from faculty, both in quality and quantity, with the result majority of institutions are imparting education by proxy. Further, the faculty available is fresh and raw with no teaching experience. Even students joining the profession, in majority of cases, are left over from engineering and other profession. With increasing intake granted on year-to-year basis, quality of education has emerged as the major causality. In the prevailing circumstances, it will be critical to look at the entire gamut of architectural education, quality of intake and quality of education imparted besides promoting research

The new government’s 10-year plan to improve infrastructure includes building smaller airports in towns, a high-sped train network, revamping trains and modernising ports. The government is planning a multi-billion dollar infrastructure fund to push investments. Four ministries — Civil Aviation, Railways, Road and Shipping — have been asked to work together. This will improve coordination and avoid delays in decision making. The government is all set to roll out Rs 2 lakh crore worth of infrastructure projects this year. Undoubtedly, the focus should be on expediting stalled infrastructure projects and resolve iron and coal mining issues.

These measures must combine with reforms in environment issues, land acquisition, taxation, labour and speedy clearances of project approvals.

In the construction sector, the central government has announced 100 per cent FDI

Construction as part of its initiative for “Make in India”.

The government has eased foreign investment rules to make it easier for investors to enter the markets. The new rules proposed include reducing the built-up area requirement for FDI in construction projects to 20,000 sq. metres from 50,000 sq. metres. The minimum capital requirement has also been reduced to $5 million from $10 million. The new rules will make it easier for the government to attract investments to build smart cities and affordable homes in the country. It is also likely to improve the dismal infrastructure in Asia’s third largest economy and provide impetus to key manufacturing sectors such as cement and steel.

Indian and construction and infrastructure industry We need to see infrastructure groundwork taking place on a massive scale in India.

And the government needs to take concrete efforts to mobilise more funds for the space. World-class infrastructure holds the key for India to become a sustained development. Coupled with a quantum growth in the construction sector of the country, infrastructure development is significant for rapid growth across all sectors as it provides access to rural areas, easy approach to markets, besides opening up new regions for investment opportunities. With the backdrop of active new government initiatives, friendly policies and rising investment trends in the sector, the Indian construction sector offers promising growth trends and opportunities.

The 12th Plan, which started in 2013 looks set to include $1 trillion for infra development, with around 50 per cent of this likely to come from private funds. The new government has initiated innumerable initiatives to lift the sector from its current dormant conditions.

X-Factors Currently, infrastructure is the main priority of Indian Government. The development of infrastructure is the main tool to achieving GDP growth targets. The sector needs huge finances and massive funding. But there is usually a major variation in the commission’s target and funds that are actually deployed.

Nearly all of the infrastructure sectors present excellent opportunities for construction, with roads and highways, ports and airports, railways and power standing out as bright spots, with huge sums of investment planned.

The current policies of the Indian Government are definitely encouraging the investors in infrastructure and construction projects from both domestic as well as overseas private capital. India is already a hot destination for foreign investors. As per UNCTAD reports, India is being rated the second most attractive location (after China) for global FDI. In order to increase FDI inflows, particularly with a view to catalysing investment and enhancing infrastructure, the Indian Government has also introduced significant policy reforms.

As part of policy reforms, the government needs to simplify the approval route process, including setting up several agencies to expedite FDI approval.

Then, without a doubt, there is huge opportunity in the Indian infrastructure space in the short- and medium-terms at least. The policies of the Indian Government, which have been evolving very rapidly in recent

This construction has green benefits and a high resale value. It’s not surprising that Indian industrial construction is eminently poised for a big pre-engineered steel building (PEB) wave given India’s renewed focus on infrastructure and the new industrial thrust.

The central government’s “Make in India” campaign and recent approval of ordinance for amendment of Land Acquisition Act for development of infrastructure and industry related projects will further give a boost to the economic growth as this was one of the major hurdle in delaying many projects. The government should promote steel as construction material for speedy implementation of the projects and avoid cost overruns and project delays. The new government is planning for implementation of 100 smart cities, and this can be efficiently done using pre-engineered steel construction as done in developed countries providing an affordable and sustainable material for construction. Concessions in the form of tax incentives could also be extended for steel construction industry.

WACKER to present innovative binders at European Coatings Show 2015 At the European Coatings Show (ECS) in Nuremberg, Germany, from April 21 to 23, 2015, the Munich-based WACKER Group will exhibit a new polymeric binder for modifying gypsum drywall products.

VINNAPAS 4800 G gives gypsum-based joint fillers outstanding tensile adhesive strength on gypsum plasterboard and jointing tapes. Joint fillers finished with this new dispersible polymer powder also show excellent workability to yield particularly smooth surfaces. Furthermore, the powder’s low emissions make it ideal for joint fillers and jointing compounds used indoors. Plus, WACKER will be presenting SILRES BS POWDER S, an additive for waterproofing gypsum-based dry-mix mortars. This highly efficient powder is low in volatile organic compounds and can be quickly mixed with water without raising dust.

At the ECS 2015, WACKER will be premiering VINNAPAS 4800 G, a new polymeric binder specifically for gypsum-based joint fillers of the kind employed in modern drywall building. Drywall technology is very popular today because it is easy and quick to install. Polymeric binders are important ingredients in joint fillers because they give the gypsum mortar the necessary stability, adhesion, flexibility and workability.

VINNAPAS 4800 G dispersible polymer powder is based on vinyl acetate and ethylene and was specially developed for enhancing gypsumbased joint-filler compounds. The new powder boosts the adhesion of grout mortars to both reinforcement strips and plasterboard. The reinforcement strips, which may be made of paper, glass fibre, or specialty nonwovens, are placed in the joints and plastered over to make the joint more stable and to prevent cracks.

Stabilised with polyvinyl alcohol, joint fillers become simpler to process, and much softer and easier to apply. Once applied, it cures to yield a particularly smooth, level surface devoid of cracks or crevices.

The total absence of plasticising additives in VINNAPAS 4800 G supports the formulation of low-emission end products. It is thus ideal for enhancing ecologically sound, gypsum-based dry-mix mortars for joint fillers and jointing compounds used indoors.

SILRES BS POWDER S: highly efficient water repellent for gypsum dry-mix mortars Moisture can do irreparable damage to gypsum building materials. To prevent this and to protect the set gypsum mortar against moisture, powder-form water-repellent agents are admixed to the dry-mix mortar.

This requires manufacturers of standard powder-form water repellents to employ carrier or encapsulation materials as a way of converting the liquid active ingredients into a powder. These additives delay the onset of the hydrophobic effect of the liquid water repellent until the mixture of gypsum mortar and water has set. The disadvantage of such additives, however, is that they are composed almost entirely of carrier material. The actual active ingredient constitutes just a few weight percent of the formulation, which is not very efficient in terms of either weight or cost.

Gypsum-based building materials formulated with SILRES BS POWDER S

The solution here is to use SILRES BS POWDER S. This new additive for dry-mix mortars does not require any additional additives, consists entirely of a novel, active powder ingredient and so is extraordinarily efficient. Just 0.2 weight per cent of SILRES BS POWDER S is enough to make gypsum building material water-repellent. Gypsum containing the new additive absorbs up to 90 per cent less water when set and can be employed in bathrooms, kitchens, stairwells and garages.

Gypsum-based wall plasters, joint fillers and adhesives that have been formulated with the additive are thus suitable for use throughout house interiors.

SILRES BS POWDER S consists of a methyl siliconate which is produced as a colourless, free-flowing powder by a special process. The active ingredient is inherently soluble in water, a property which confers excellent mixing properties when the mortar is being pre-pared.

Nonetheless, the gypsum mortar is water-repellent as soon as it sets.

SILRES BS POWDER S can be used with all types of gypsum dry-mix mortars, irrespective of the pH. It eliminates the pre-reaction times which are often needed by conventional powder-form water-repellent agents. The additive even supports the formulation of Type H1 gypsum jointing compounds that meet the highest requirements for reduced water absorption. According to Standard EN 13963:2014, which was revised last year, type H1 joint fillers must absorb no more than 5 weight per cent water after setting. n

Installing ACT-WISY at Safalyam Complex and during rainy seasons the landscape and the parking lot had a lot of water collections and a kind of flood or water filling happened.

The 5,000-sq.-feet catchment area had selected. The rain in such area used to go to the drain or sewage of improper water management.

After the installation ACT-WISY recommended WFF 150 Vortex Filter for the filtration of rainwater at the Safalyam Complex.

The WFF 150 Vortex Filter is for medium commercial or large residential applications and provides the highest quality of rainwater. The vertical design, the force of adhesion and the principle of free flow do the self-cleaning of the filter. Debris is discharged from the filter along with “first flush” and excess water necessary to carry debris to sewage. The filter provides the highest quality of stored rainwater with minimal maintenance.

Vortex filtration system has vertical cylindrical type of filter. The filtered water will be collected to the storage tank using an extended pipe down to the bottom of the tank fitted with a smoothing inlet to accelerate the sedimentation process and to develop a bio film. Simultaneously, a process of oxygenation is accelerated in the filtration unit which helps to filtered rainwater to stay for a longer duration. This results in high efficiency and long-servile life, i.e. high water yield and good cleaning performance. Before installation Safalyam Complex had no rainwater harvesting systems. There was a sump of having 350 cu. metres water storage capacities. Water source was tanker water and government supply. Rain water was not collected

How the filter works?

The WFF 150 Filter can filter rainwater to 280 microns from a collection area up to 5,000 square feet. The rainwater from the roof enters the inlet connection in the side of the WFF through a horizontal drainpipe, spreading over the cylinder-shaped filter mesh. The inlet is designed to swirl the water in a vortex-like action around the surface of the stainless steel filter. The rainwater is drawn through the vertical mesh walls of the fine filter by adhesion, then collected and fed through the outlet to the storage tank (sump). Debris and particles too large for the filter are flushed through to the drain outlet by the action of water flowing down the surface of the filter.

More than 95 per cent of the rainwater entering the WFF is filtered and collected by this principle. The ACT-WISY WFF 150 Vortex Filter should be inspected two or three times a year to ensure the natural flow of water in the filter is not obstructed. The stainless steel filter only needs to be cleaned once a year in a dishwasher or by hand washing. Depending on the debris filtered, an additional cleaning may be necessary to maximise efficiency. n

HOT TO COLD opens at the National Building Museum

On the heels of the summer blockbuster BIG Maze, which attracted more than 50,000 visitors, BIG returns to the National Building Museum with a behind-the-scenes look at the studio’s creative process. The exhibition, HOT TO COLD, an odyssey of architectural adaptation, travels from the hottest to the coldest parts of our planet and explores how BIG´s designs are shaped by their cultural and climatic contexts. More than 60 architectural models, mockups and prototypes are suspended at the second-floor balconies of the museum’s historic Great Hall, turning the architecture of the National Building Museum into the architecture of the exhibition.

As the visitors move through the exhibition, they learn about the harsh demands of climatic extremes, where architecture becomes more about shading from the heat or sheltering from the cold. The milder or more temperate environments often leave more room for other factors, such as culture, programme, politics and legislation to shape the buildings.

Curator Susan Piedmont-Palladino says that BIG extended its singular design sensibility to the creation of this exhibition. “What’s so special about HOT TO COLD is that BIG has perceived the National Building Museum more as a site for a project, rather than as a venue for an exhibition,” she explains.

“That means that the sunlight, the sounds and the sights of the great hall will all be part of the context of the display, just as they are for a building in the city. BIG has a very distinctive voice, and our visitors will have a very direct experience as if the architect is talking, telling stories directly to them.” n

Enjoy winters with heated swimming pool Homes are being designed in more innovative ways than one.

People are looking to bring in the five elements into balance and make it a blissful experience that is not only beautiful to look at and wonderful to spend time in, but actually has a positive effect on the health and well-being of the inhabitants.

If we talk about water bodies in our home, then instantly swimming pools come to our mind. But generally swimming or pools are related to summers, in winters either they remain dry or are cleaned once a while. Due to this many people consider pools more as a liability rather than an asset. But things have changed, gone are the days when usage of swimming pool was confined to only summer. Now one can make use of the swimming pool throughout the year. Financially also, this makes sense, whole year you are paying pool maintenance cost, so why shouldn’t the benefits of the pool availed in winters also.

All this is made possible by the latest heating systems. There are three basic types of pool heating systems: solar pool heaters, heat pump pool heaters and gas pool heaters. The best system for pool is determined by numerous factors including one’s needs, desires, budget and physical layout of the pool and house.

Solar pool heater Solar pool heaters are best for recreational pool use and recommended for those who are comfortable with pool temperatures ranging from the low to mid-80s. Solar works year round in southern climates, and extends the season in northern climates. There may be periods during inclement weather that the pool is too cool to use; however, several sunny days will bring the pool back to a comfortable temperature.

Proper sizing is critical for good performance.

Heat pump pool heaters For those who enjoy swimming regardless of the weather, a heat pump is the recommended method. It is also the preferred method for therapy or athletic trainers, and also when a home is not “solar

feasible” (i.e. solar will not fit on roof). A heat pump, when properly sized, can maintain any desired pool temperature between 80-90 C, regardless of outside weather conditions. A heat pump will work when the outside air temperature is above 45 C. Gas pool heaters Gas is best for heating pools for short periods of time. Gas pool heaters are effective, but expensive to operate. They are ideal for quickly heating the pool when guests or children are visiting or for a second home where the pool is not heated on a regular basis. Gas heaters are generally oversized and can easily maintain any desired temperature regardless of the weather. It is also an ideal heater or backup heater for a spa.

“The heating systems are easy to maintain,” says Vivek Mishra, MD and Technical Head, Premium Pools. “The cost of installation for heat pumps is around Rs.4.53 lakh and of heaters are Rs.1.49 lakh. There is no major maintenance cost involved. Electricity consumption is also quiet low.”

Each pool and home is unique. The size of the pool heater is based on several factors, including the size and shape of the pool, pool shading (i.e. trees, screen enclosure), geographic location, swimming season and pool temperature desired, windy conditions, and for solar, the direction of the roof (south, east, west or flat). The size of the heater will determine the temperature, swimming season, and length of time to heat the pool. It is very important to properly size the heater for good performance.

Keep in mind that a thermal pool cover is recommended for all heating systems. Heating a pool without a cover is like heating a house without a roof. The heat just goes right out the top. Without a pool cover, the cost of operating a heat pump or gas heater is doubled, and a solar heater’s effectiveness is dramatically decreased.

For convenience, a cover roller may be added to ease placement and removal of the cover. If a pool cover is not be used, the size of the heater must be increased by 100 per cent. n
