1 Reflective Report on Australian Aborigines Researching on the history of Australian Aborigines and the challenges that they have faced for centuries was revealing of the extent of the prejudices and discrimination that the community has endured for centuries. When the British and Irish settlers colonized Australia, they treated Aborigines as inferior beings, attempting to exterminate them through massacres, genocides and putting them in concentration camps. The repeated attempts to wipe them out is perhaps one of the reasons that the Aboriginals comprise only 2% of the Australian population despite being the earliest inhabitants of the country. Through this research, I have learned that historical injustices have a traumatic effect on populations, and may affect their ability to reach their full potential. One of the most effective ways of solving this trauma is through policies and procedures for addressing the historical and contemporary wrongdoings against the community, such as a truth, justice and reconciliation commission. I have also learned that historical injustices should be resolved by giving communities back the property that was taken from them; for instance, Aborigines were dispossessed of their land, therefore it is essential to allocate them a province where they can live as a community.
