1 Antimicrobial Drugs - Treatment of Bacterial Infection Treatment of Bacterial Infection Bacterial infections are treated using antibiotics. An example of a common bacterial infection treated with antibiotics is gonorrhea. However, different strains of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria responsible for gonorrhea, have emerged. These strains are treated with a combination of stronger antibiotics. Treatment of uncomplicated gonorrhea is usually done with a combination of ceftriaxone and azithromycin. Monotherapy is not recommended since the bacteria can easily develop resistance towards the drug. Ceftriaxone is usually given as an intramuscular or intravenous injection.
