1 Urban planning and politics in the Global South Introduction Urban planning is important in ensuring that the population living in cities and towns live a good life. Urban planning focuses on the availability of services such as transport and communication, health, education, water supply, sewerage, housing, and recreational facilities (Gugle, 2003). However, the planning process involves politics of resources and opportunity allocation. Political changes affect how cities are planned and developed because of policy priorities. The uneven development of cities is impacted mainly influenced by the interests of the ruling class (Bayat, 2000). Rebellions and protests linked to urban panning are common in cities in the global south, from Africa, Asia, and South America; the people raise against what they think is discrimination or infringement of their rights by administrations. Politics in the global south affect urban planning, as seen in the metropolitan rebellions that emerged from the 1990s. Research questions Why did metropolitan rebellions emerge in the global south? Should the public interests of cities be left in the hands of private developers? Does politics contribute to unequal development and conflicts in the global south cities?
