The Obesity Pandemic

Page 1

1 Obesity Obesity is the increase in the weight of the body, more than 30% above an acceptable target weight. The rising prevalence of obesity is a product of high-energy content in the diet, low levels of physical activity, and increased inactive lifestyles. Numerous cultural, behavioural and ecological factors have been suggested as contributing to obesity. Obesity is associated with many medical conditions, including apnea, cancer, asthma gout, osteoarthritis, heart disease and stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure. The more obese one is, the more they are likely to have these health problems. While some people are genetically predisposed to obesity, any person can be affected if they lead a sedentary lifestyle, lack enough sleep, do not exercise, et cetera. This is because the above conditions result to accumulation of more calories in the body than one can burn. Aged people are at a more risk than younger ones, females are also more vulnerable than men are. This is because as people age, they are less active and the body muscle mass decreases, females have less muscle and burn lesser calories than men burn, thus resulting to lower metabolism, and calorie needs.
