Classroom and student factors:

National / State Learning Standards:

The learners are diverse with unique needs. The class comprises white, African American, Asian, and Hispanic students. Ethnic backgrounds have been revealed to affect the learner’s mastery of the English language, which may probably affect their comprehension of the addition and subtraction concepts. The learners also have different academic abilities. From previous records, some learners perform below the grade level, at the grade level, or above the grade level. Learners performing below the grade level are also differentiated so that some perform up to two years below the grade level. The diversity of learners will be accommodated by differentiating instructional methods to provide learners with an individualized experience customized to meet their needs. Students develop strategies for adding and subtracting whole numbers based on their prior work with small numbers ( Common Core Standards for Mathematics)

Specific learning target(s) / objectives:

 use objects in the classroom to foster mastery of the concepts of addition and subtraction  Examples o adding boys to girls to find the total number of pupils o adding books o adding cars in the school compounds  use the words, put together and take away to foster comprehension. ?

The agenda of the lesson is to understand the math concepts of adding ( putting together) and subtracting ( taking away)

?

Teacher notes:

1. By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to identify the link between addition and subtraction and perform operations accurately. 2. By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to use models, the number line, and images to perform math operations on addition and subtraction. 3. By the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to interpret and solve simple word equations on addition and subtraction.

? Formative assessment: The teacher will assess learners’ comprehension and mastery at two significant milestones Adding  Adding numbers together using the number line, putting objects together to get the sum subtracting  The teacher will test learners’ mastery of the takeaway components during the lesson by giving tasks to take away numbers from the number line.  Subtract objects to get the remainder.
