1 Ethical Issues Surrounding Psychotherapy in Children Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPS) encounter numerous situations that call for their ability to make logical decisions and sound judgment for safety together with the well-being of individuals, families, and communities (Phoenix, Hurd, & Chapman, 2016). Most of the cases that nurses come across do not have a clear-cut solution. Therefore, nurses have to apply their ethical decision-making capabilities to make the right decisions. Considering that nurses may encounter patients who hold a different set of values, interests, and principles, they must remain professional and provide care in an unbiased setting (Phoenix et al., 2016). Notably, the nurse must critically assess ethical situations and develop the right plans of action. This paper investigates the ethical dilemma associated with the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder in children. Summary of the moral issue in the article The article by Parens and Johnston (2010) explores the controversies surrounding the diagnosis and the treatment of bipolar disorder in children. The authors noted that although a DSM Criteria was established in the 1990s to assist in the diagnosis of bipolar in children, treatment for this condition in this population is still marred by controversies.
