Importance of a Universal Standard Measuring System (SI units) in Scientific Work A universal standard measuring system removes the confusion that may arise by using different measurement systems. By adopting one system of measurement, it is possible to compare the results and justify the procedure and findings achieved than when different measurement systems are used. For instance, in 1983, the new Air Canada Boeing 767 was designed temporarily without functional fuel gauges and had different fuel density than other old models. When the crew decided to calculate the volume of the fuel left, they used a dipstick reading, similar to finding the volume of oil in the car. They applied the density of the old planes to calculate the volume. The old planes jet fuel density was 1.77Ib/L while Boeing 767 was 0.8kg/L. Consequently, the actual volume of oil in the jet was half the calculated volume by the crew. Boeing 767 was not able to reach its destination and was forced to land on a nearby Airforce base.
