Brexit and Beyond: Issues that led to Brexit

Page 1

1 Brexit and Beyond In retrospect, the Brexit debate gained traction because of political and partly social reasons. The Brexit debate started as a slow trickle that became a steady stream that British citizens actualized through a constitution amid warnings that the country would fall in economic and social ranks. Among the institutions that warned of dire economic consequences should the country vote for Brexit was the Bank of England, the IMF, the IFS, and the CBI. However, most of the issues raised to support the Brexit motion resonated well with voters, gaining traction against feelings that the country needed to remain in the union. Issues that Led to Brexit The major issue that charged people's support of the Brexit motion was England's contribution to the EU every week. According to BBC News (2016), the citizens of England felt that leaving the EU would free 350 million pounds that the country committed to the EU weekly. Although the authenticity of contributing 350 million pounds per week could not be substantiated, the slogan of freeing 350 million pounds per week for NHS gained much traction among people. It is among the strongest reasons why most people supported the motion to exit the European Union.
