Burnout in New Nurses

Page 1

1 Burnout in New Nurses New graduate nurses are at high risk of experiencing professional burnout due to the distinctive patient-care provider relationship and stressful work environment that requires strong emotional involvement. Burnout is typified by mental and physical exhaustion, feelings of chronic boredom, excessive irritability, and a tendency to suppress emotions (Kowalczuk et al., 2020). New nurses can use different interventions including stress management, healthy food choices, sleep and exercise to address chronic occupational stressors that contribute to burnout. Stress management Stress management is an effective burnout prevention strategy used in healthcare settings. De Oliveira et al. (2019) noted that medication, relaxation, and rest are important strategies that could help nurses cope with stressful events at work. Kriakous et al. (2021) concurred with De Oliveira et al. (2019) on the effectiveness of stress management arguing that Mindfulness-based stress management helps improve mental health and productivity.
