Bywater's War


The Battle of the Metaurus

In the late 1920s, naval analyst and former spy Hector C. Bywater wrote a novel that described a hypothetical conflict between Japan and the USA, set in his near future, 1931. In addition to being well-written COA1303-130 and exciting, he described many advances in naval technology, such as the rise of naval aviation. But his story was also rooted in the past (including the use of poison gas), and concluded with a Jutland-style clash between the two great fleets. Designer Bob Eldridge has transformed Bywater’s novel into a gaming supplement of 30 scenarios for Command at Sea. Ship statistics include not only realworld units like the pre-war US and Japanese battleships, but also the ships that Mr. Bywater created for his story - the Alaskaclass aircraft carriers and the Nagasaki campaigns, each determined by different historical events in 1926, 1932, and 1939. These also feature a mix of real-world and hypothetical units, like the US Lexington class, which were planned as battlecruisers until the Washington Naval Treaty.

Six Day War is a wargame of Arab-Israeli War of June 1967. There are two players in the game, each commanding a Front of the Israeli Army against various Arab opponents. One commands the Sinai Front; the second commands the Eastern Front. Each player also commands the Arab forces facing the other player (his opponent.) The game is designed in this manner owing to the massive qualitative superiority of Israeli forces in this war. The assumption of the game is that an Israeli victory was generally inevitable, so the intent is to place the players in a situation in which they have to compete with each other on both sides to win the greatest possible victory on their own Front. Both sides also relied on mercenaries: Italian musketeers, Swiss pikemen, German Landsknechts. Tercios, too, are in their infancy; at Pavia, the battle is fought by smaller formations maneuvering in a broken, wooded area. Pavia uses the new Pike & Shot game system to portray the battlefields of the early gunpowder period.

The battle of Talavera in 1809 was one of the major battles of the Peninsular War and Arthur Wellesley’s first victory in Spain itself, following which he was created Viscount Wellington of Talavera and Wellington. Although Wellesely’s forces were outnumbered, and a sizeable contingent of the Spanish ran away, he had chosen a superb defensive position and was able to beat off successive French attacks, though at a heavy cost in terms of casualties. His foray into Spain had an enormous effect on Spanish morale as they realized they were not alone in the struggle. In 1939 more than 140,000 New Zealanders enlisted to fight overseas during World War II. Of these, 104,000 served in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Initially thrown into the doomed campaign to halt the German blitzkrieg on Greece and Crete (1941), the division was rebuilt under the leadership of MajGen Sir Bernard Freyberg, and became the elite corps within Montgomery’s Eighth Army in the desert. After playing a vital role in the victory at El Alamein (1942) the ‘Kiwis’ were the vanguard of the pursuit to Tunisia. In 1943–45 the division was heavily engaged in the Italian mountains, especially at Cassino (1944); it ended the war in Trieste. America's Elite: US Special Forces from the American Revolution to the Present Day most dramatic special forces operations in US history, from sniping British commanders during the Revolutionary War to Riverine incursions in the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, and from demolition missions on D-Day to the SEAL assault on Osama bin Laden’s compound in 2011. Training and selection procedures are explained in detail, and the book also describes some of the technologies that have separated regular soldiers from their Special Forces counterparts. Between 1845 and 1872, various groups of Maori were involved in a series of wars of resistance against British settlers. Warfare had been endemic in pre-colonial New Zealand and Maori groups maintained fortified villages or pas. The small early British coastal settlements were tolerated, and in the 1820s a chief named Hongi Hika travelled to Britain with a missionary and returned laden with gifts. He promptly exchanged these for muskets, and began an aggressive 15-year expansion. By the 1860s many Maori had acquired firearms and had perfected their bush-warfare tactics. In the last phase of the wars a religious movement, Pai Maarire (‘Hau Hau’), inspired remarkable guerrilla leaders such as Te Kooti Arikirangi to renewed resistance. This final phase saw a reduction in British Army forces. European victory was not total, but led to a negotiated peace that preserved some of the Maori people’s territories and freedoms. OSPMAL001

This volume will detail the history, weapons and tactics of the Japanese destroyers built before the war. This includes the famous Fubuki class (called “Special Type” by the Japanese, which were, when completed in the late 1920’s, the most powerful class of destroyers in the world. This book will also cover the three classes built before the Special Type which were based on a German World War I design as well as two classes built after the advent of the Special Type. The success (or lack of success) of these designs will be discussed and they will be compared to comparable Allied destroyer designs. On March 4, 2002, a team of SEALs was choppered onto a hostile Afghan mountain peak as part of Operation Anaconda. The largest operation by US forces since Vietnam, it was intended to bring to battle foreign al-Qaeda fighters who had fled after the overthrow of the Taliban and the battle of Tora Bora. But when their special ops Chinook was hit by RPGs, it marked the beginning of the SEALs’ epic day-long battle for survival, which involved Coalition special forces, gunships and Predators in a 17-hour firefight against the al-Qaeda guerrillas.

German Automatic Rifles 1941-45

This book explores the origins, development, combat use and lasting influence of Nazi Germany’s automatic rifles, focusing on the Gew 41(W), Gew 43/Kar 43, FG 42 and MP 43/StG 44. Gentlemen Thieves is a humorous storytelling game about thieves, traps, and wild inventions. You are breaking into buildings around town and must defeat crazy traps to reach the loot. You can try anything you can imagine! On your turn you will enter buildings and you will face deadly traps like the Room Full of Bees or the Moat Filled with Barbed Wire. Channel your inner MacGuyver to devise a plan using your Gear cards and tools to defeat the trap in the Room. Run out of ammo? Use the gunpowder from the Flintlock Pistol to blow open the hinges of the Locked Doors. You are limited only by your own imagination and creativity. Your plan will be picked apart by the other players, who will do ASMGENT01 their best to find any weaknesses that you haven't considered. The conquest for the land of Kemet takes place over two phases: Day and Night. During the day, choose an action amongst the nine possible choices provided by your player mat and perform it immediately. Once every player has taken five actions, night falls, with players gathering Prayer Points from their temples, drawing Divine Intervention cards, and determining the turn order before the start of the new day. As the game progresses, they can use Prayer Points to enroll magical creatures and have them join their troops. In addition to intimidating enemies, these creatures provide special powers!

Trapped in a prison in which each room has four doors but apparently no exit, the players must try to find Room 25, the supposed exit to this nightmare. Each turn, the player moves are preprogrammed, requiring discussion, negotiation – and possibly betrayal. Room 25 includes five different playing modes, from full cooperation to a solitaire game.

The map stretches from the Roman frontier across the three parts of Gaul to the Rhine, as well as across the Northern Sea into Britannia. In Caesar’s War each player has a unique deck of Campaign Cards. They generate recruits for the armies, movement abilities, special combat bonuses and historic events. In Whizz Bing Bang, a quick card game for 3 to 6 players, players take turns reading the top card of the deck, which will dictate their action: Whizz: Game play continues in the same direction. Bing: Game play changes direction. Bang: Game play continues in the same direction, but skips the next player. Boom: Everyone must slap and leave their hand on the Boom while saying "BOOM!". Penalties for not complying with the top card of the deck are distributed in the form of tokens, with one token of IEL51035 each sound per player – Whizz, Bing, Bang, Boom – in this order. The game ends when one player gives his Boom token away.

Belisarius’s War is a two-player game of the Vandal War, in which the Eastern Romans reconquered North Africa. One player commands the Romans, the other the Vandals. Both players maneuver units representing elite regulars, tribal warbands, fleets and militia. The point-to-point map covers North Africa as well as the islands of the Western Mediterranean. Each side has unique advantages, with fierce Vandals pitted against disciplined Roman heavy cavalry. There are special rules for Huns, rebellions, morale and leaders such as Belisarius. Having the right commander at the right battle can mean the difference between victory and disaster.


Western Town

In Western Town, each player is a Marshal of an expanding town in the Old West of the U.S. in the early 1860s. Each Marshal wants to develop the most prosperous town, one which President Lincoln himself would be proud to visit. The three principal criteria which allow you to win the game are population growth, charm/attractiveness, and wealth, as measured by gold. Turns are regulated by the visits of Lincoln, who determines, bit-by-bit, the value of the towns relative to those three criteria. These criteria can and do change every round, and you will need to adapt to these changing criteria to win this game! In addition to logic and strategy, Marshals will need to bluff and occasionally resort to questionably bending the law a bit, to succeed in building their Western Town. And as if that weren't enough, there are even occasional Indian attacks to deal with as well!
