ANOTHER FESTIVAL OF CULTURE & CREATIVITY

MON 28 JULY - SAT 2 AUGUST

The 38th annual Summer School and literary festival offers another attractive programme with an international flavour of in-person events with readings, talks, workshops, panel discussions and evening shows, featuring well-known writers, esteemed speakers and highly acclaimed performers from throughout Ireland, the UK and beyond. Whether you come for an event or two, a full day or the week, there is something on offer for everyone, as always, in this year’s JHISS programme.

Acclaimed speakers will address this year’s theme: Our Country Also: Difference and Belonging

THIS IS OUR COUNTRY ALSO, NOWHERE ELSE; AND WE SHALL NOT BE OUTCAST ON THE WORLD.

‘THE COLONY’: JOHN HEWITT, 1949

John Hewitt recognised that “our country” belonged to successive waves of migrants; not only his historical “Kelt, Roman. Saxon, Dane and Scot”, but those forced to find

new lives in our time by a century’s wars and the collapse of an empire whose wealth was built on exploitation of the “colonies” that many of today’s immigrants once knew of as “home”.

Well-known prose writers who will read from their recently published work in the always popular In Conversation Lunchtime series include Donal Ryan (30 July), Cauvery Madhavan (28 July), Wendy Erskine (31 July) and Tessa Hadley (1 August) while the Dazzling Debuts slot (1 August) will feature Roisín O’Donnell and Garrett Carr in conversation with Jan Carson. Best-selling author Ian Rankin will be the special guest in a Crime Fiction Special hosted by Stuart Neville (29 July).

Among the acclaimed poets in the JHISS 2025 programme are Kathleen McCracken & Milena Williamson (29 July), Dane Holt & Mai Ishikowa (30 July) and Hannah Copley & Gustave Parker Hibbert (31 July). Vona Groarke, Polina Cosgrave and Kelly Michels will feature in the ever-popular Gallery Goes event (1 August).

The programme also provides Creative Writing workshops with established writers, as well as exhibitions of paintings by Paddy McCann and Bob Speers. Further details on all events will be on the John Hewitt Society and Market Place websites and in the JHISS brochure to be available in May.

Travelling on the pillion of his friend’s two-stroke motorbike, they encounter 80s Ireland and young people from all over making the same pilgrimage. Laden with camping gear and cheap alcohol smuggled across the border, wearing a converted Garda riot control helmet stuffed with bin bags, and a pair of swimming goggles, our hero undergoes a rite of passage as he ventures out into the big bad beautiful world. Through his eyes we see the Folk and Rock glory of the Irish Glastonbury - and a country in transition, with a backdrop of recession, church oppression, emigration and Troubles. But right now, Macker’s 17, there’s Smithwick’s in the rucksack, and rumour has it that the girls from the North are bringing hash and condoms. So that’s alright Mama...

This acclaimed Bewley’s Café Theatre production of the classic Dubliners story, features the actor and comedian, Terry O’Neill, who brings to life Joyce’s rare collection of characters and takes you on a hilarious journey from purgatory to paradise.

Dubliners, first published in 1914, is one of the great short story collections in the English language. By exploring the lives of his fellow Dublin citizens with unflinching realism, Joyce revealed truths both blasphemous and transcendent.

THIN PLACE

Bob Speers

Mon 28 July - Sat 6 Sep | FOYER WALLS

The term “thin place” refers to a location where the veil between the physical and the transcendental appears permeable or “thin”, a mystical space where the boundary between our tangible world and the unseen world seem to touch. Peatlands (bogs) are considered to have this special characteristic where there is a connection between the material and the numinous.

‘Thin Place’ is a continuous artistic journey for Bob Speers as he explores and examines boglands nationwide, inspiring new work for this touring exhibition. Bob uses a sample from each bog so that, in essence the bog name is to be

found in the painting. Bob’s unique work not only includes material taken from bogs all across Ireland, but he also incorporates commercial paints and discarded household fabrics.

“My art is currently informed by habitual wanderings through different levels of moor and bog. Interest lies in the human and weathering imprint, the subtle colours, lines and incisions on its skin.”

‘Thin Place’ launches the 2025 John Hewitt International Summer School Visual Arts programme at the Market Place Gallery.

STONE MIRROR

Mon 28 July - Sat 6 Sep | GALLERY

Paddy McCann’s new series of works are interchanges between external events, forces, observations and the inner life of experiences and memories.

Insights are drawn from ordinary places and people.

A history that has shaped us all!

‘Stone Mirror’ launches the 2025 John Hewitt International Summer School Visual Arts programme at the Market Place Gallery.
