THE BARDIC THEATRE PRESENTS

THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST BY OSCAR WILDE H Sat 20 Jan | 8.00pm | £18.00 | £15.00 [conc] “I hope you have not been leading a double life, pretending to be wicked and being really good all the time. That would be hypocrisy.”

THE PERFECT PLAY STEPHEN FRY

Brought to you by Bardic Theatre and featuring a stellar cast, this wickedly funny chocolate-box of a comedy is full of thrills, frills and frivolity.

Based on one hundred interviews, including unpublished interviews with Hume, Stephen Walker’s timely and authoritative biography examines the career of a man once dubbed “Ireland’s Greatest”. Stephen Walker covered the politics of Northern Ireland for 30 years. He is the author of three books and is a former BBC Northern Ireland Political Correspondent. Sam McBride is an experienced journalist and writer. He wrote the critically acclaimed book ‘Burned’ published by Merrion Press which examined the RHI scandal. He is currently the Northern Ireland Editor of the Belfast Telegraph. This event takes place in our Studio Theatre with an unreserved, tiered seating layout.

‘Mean Girls’ meets ‘Succession’ meets ‘Downton Abbey’ in arguably the greatest satire written for the stage. Follow the doomed doubled lives of the eternal hedonist Algernon, his neurotic pal Jack; and their absurd efforts to woo the glamorous and obsessive frenemies Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. Featuring the iconic and formidable matriarch Lady Bracknell, this play is replete with instantly recognisable one-liners that could as easily apply to the social media age as they do to the fin de siècle self-indulgence of Victorian high society. Presented by one of Northern Ireland’s leading amateur theatre groups.

THE ULSTER ORCHESTRA ON YOUR DOORSTEP Wed 31 Jan | 8.00pm | £18.00 | £16.00 [conc] | £5.00 [under 18s] |  Elgar Serenade for Strings Benjamin Romantic Fantasy for Violin, Viola and Orchestra Schubert Symphony No. 8 [Unfinished] Ioana Petcu-Colan | Violin & Wenhan Jiang | Viola

Join the Ulster Orchestra for a concert to warm the severest of winter chills! Elgar’s ‘Serenade for Strings’ is a gentle, charming work, full of lilting rhythms that suggest folk dances and with a little hint of wistfulness to temper the serenity. Arthur Benjamin’s name may not be familiar, though film buffs will recognise his work from the Hitchcock film ‘The Man Who Knew Too

Much’. His ‘Romantic Fantasy for Violin, Viola and Orchestra’ is a dramatic, virtuosic showcase for the two solo instruments and the Orchestra is pleased to showcase the talents of its Leader, Ioana Petcu-Colan and Viola Section Leader Wenhan Jiang, in the solo roles. The performance closes with another Ulster Orchestra favourite, Schubert’s Eighth Symphony, known as ‘Unfinished’. It’s a masterful piece of writing, with two movements so complete it’s hard to imagine how there might have been room for two more. By turns tragic and tender, it resolves in a mood of uplift and peacefulness that will send you out into the January cool with a contented smile.

The show is named after a popular New York vaudeville act and an Irish American knockabout farce from the 1880s. The event is an omnium-gatherum of poetry, prose, and music, by turns witty, exuberant, and sophisticated.
