Since death comes to us all and grief is something most of us will experience, I thought there must be plenty of people who would like that funny to be shared. Also, I did a show about my Dad being sick back in 2010 and I couldn’t face my mother in the afterlife because I know her first question would be “Your Father got a show, how come I didn’t get one?”

I think it’s tougher to lose your mum. My Dad was best supporting actor. My mother was the actress in a leading role. You are never ready when the star of the show dies. So this is a show about my mother. EDDI READER Fri 25 Feb | 8.00pm | £27.00 Eddi Reader is perhaps Scotland’s greatest living female voice. In 2022, she celebrates her 40th year on stage with a ‘40 Years Live’ concert tour.

From her earliest years playing the folk clubs of Western Scotland and learning how to street sing across Europe, Eddi’s path soon led her to a professional career in music as a backing singer for Eurythmics and Gang of Four. Her band Fairground Attraction had huge international success and number one hits with ‘Perfect’ and debut album ‘First of a Million Kisses’ which stormed the charts in the late 1980s.

Throughout her successful solo career, Eddi has released consistently great works, including highly acclaimed albums such as ‘The Songs of Robert Burns’ and last year’s ‘Cavalier’. She has won Brit Awards, been awarded four honorary degrees and an MBE, sung to millions on some of the world’s greatest concert and festival stages and collaborated with a host of stars across a myriad of genres.

The ‘40 Years Live’ tour promises to be something special. As with any Eddi Reader show, the magic is being made in the moment; no two performances are ever the same.

The friends grapple with drug addiction, homelessness, parents, sexual identity, the AIDS crisis, and the fear of dying.

Thurs 10 Mar | 8.00pm | £14.50 | £12.50 [conc] R Owen McCafferty’s play, ‘Mojo Mickybo’, is about a friendship between two boys growing up in Belfast - a friendship that at first is immune to the sectarian violence taking place around them, but which nonetheless is ultimately destroyed by it. The play’s action is set in Belfast over the summer of 1970.

Mojo and his mate Mickybo are two nine-year-old boys from opposing sides of the sectarian divide. They are ‘thick as two small thieves’, playing headers, being mouthy, building huts, and spitting from cinema balconies. The action is played as theatrical flashback, often inhabiting a world of fantasy, such as re-enacting their favourite film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. The two performers constantly slip in and out of roles and imaginary worlds, with the violence of The Troubles only obliquely impacting on them - until finally their friendship is destroyed in a way that they only later come to understand. This is pure storytelling with Bruiser’s dynamic physicality providing opportunity for a new generation of theatre-goers to experience Belfast’s most treasured, living playwright and to consider that Mojo and Mickybo represent the division of a benighted country that has spent a century at war with itself.

CLUBSOUND 50 YEARS ON i Sat 9 Apr | 8.00pm | £21.50 Clubsound are still going strong and enjoying life after 50 years of being on the road. Clubsound, Ireland’s premier comedy showband were part of the Ulster heartbeat through the troubles and helped people forget their worries. Comic songs like, ‘Belfast, Belfast’, ‘Tonga LOL’, ‘Daddy’s Wee Balloons’, ‘Nigel Courtney’, ‘The Reluctant Exile’ and ‘The Singing Farmer’ became sure-fire favourites with crowds throughout Ulster’s thriving cabaret scene.

It wasn’t just their comedy that won hearts. The members of the band are all gifted musicians, be it playing a Glenn Millar medley, a traditional folk song such as ‘Mary From Dungloe’ or their tribute to the super B’s - The Beach Boys, The Beatles and The Bee Gees. Clubsound were the most successful showband group from Northern Ireland from the 1960’s to the current day. The current line-up features George Jones, David McKnight, Barry Woods, Alan McCartney and Jimmy Black.

An exciting recital featuring music, written for trumpet and piano by some of the best known Russian composers of the 20th century.

Trumpeter, Stephen Murphy and pianist Cahal Masterson, are both originally from Poyntzpass. Their musical career has taken them both nationally and internationally for studies and work. This collaboration has been an ambition of theirs for many years and both are delighted to be giving their premiere performance in their home County of Armagh.

The main work featured in this recital will be the Arutunian Trumpet concerto. Although born in Armenia, Alexander Arutunian [1920 - 2012] studied at the Moscow Conservatory.

He was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1949 and the People’s Artist of the USSR in 1970 for his contribution to music in the USSR. His trumpet concerto was premiered by the great Soviet trumpeter Timofei Dokschitzer in 1950. The work features romantic lyrical cantabile sections alongside virtuosic passages which are uniquely influenced by Armenian folk music. The concerto is written in one movement but contains five distinct sections. Other works will include a selection of Rachmaninov Preludes for piano, performed by Cahal Masterson, as well as works for trumpet and piano by Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Bohme and Goedicke.

Sammy Ragdoll hasn’t seen her best friend Eddy The Teddy for a while, so she decides that she will take him out for the day as a treat. Eddy is very excited and is very easily distracted by all the things he sees. The problem is he tends to wander off and before long they become separated and Eddy is lost, a long way from home.

Eddy meets many animals and asks for their help. However, they all have their limitations. Chris Rabbit is too timid, Warren Rabbit can’t bounce high enough to see and Patsy Pigeon can’t remember anything for more than a few seconds.

Will Eddy find Sammy and get back home? The show uses many elements of theatre, mime, puppetry and songs to join in with. It’s a perfect introduction to live entertainment for children who’ve never been to a show before, and a welcome return for Eddy the Teddy’s young fans.

Unable to tour during lockdown, thousands have enjoyed logging on to Facebook Live to see them perform tunes from 2016’s career highlight ‘Sugar Island’, right back to their 1989 debut ‘Songs For The Tempted’, which first put them on the pop map with ‘Mary’, as well as their latest lockdown inspired radio hit ‘Waiting Game’.

The regular rehearsing required for each live-streamed show has helped keep the brothers match fit, as Brendan explains, “Considering that we’ve been off the road for a year and a half now, I actually think that we’ve got better, and while performing online is great, there’s nothing like the thrill of playing live on stage.”

Turn a piece of raw leather into a beautiful and unique hand tooled and dyed belt under the expert guidance of award-winning milliner, costume fabricator and textile artist Enda Kenny. This workshop with demonstrations will teach you how to handle and cut tooling leather, add designs and decoration to the leather’s surface, dye a leather belt and how to care for leather. You will complete your bespoke belt by adding a buckle for a good fit.

All materials and tools will be supplied. Please bring an overall, apron or old shirt to protect clothing from leather dyes and pigments.

Split, level and prepare your sponge cake and professionally prepare your sponge with crumb coat. Cover your cake and drum with sugar paste for a perfect finish. CONTEMPORARY WEAVING WITH LITTLE TANGLE - ABSTRACT WALL HANGING

In week one, ceramic artist Ciara Campbell-Crawford will teach you how to design and create a delicate necklace with a set of matching earrings using the finest porcelain clay and coloured underglazes. Add intricate details using wooden and rubber stamps and rolling pins. Your clay designs will be taken back to Ciara’s studio, where she will fire and glaze them in her kiln. In week two, you’ll be given the opportunity to add fittings such as earring hooks, studs and diamanté to finish your pieces, ready for you to wear home that evening.

A week between classes is required to allow time for your ceramic jewellery to dry before assembling and decorating on week two.

Contemporary designer and weaver, Karolina Lisek from Little Tangle, hosts a one day tapestry weaving workshop exploring the art of hand weaving in a modern context. Karolina will teach the foundation skills of tapestry weaving using a frame loom. Participants will create an abstract wall hanging using a range of techniques such as plain weave, rya knotting and sumak. As well as covering the basic techniques, the workshop will encourage individual expression and experimentation through the use of texture, colour and composition. All materials will be provided.

LAND AND LORE: NATURE PRINTING FOLKLORE WORKSHOP & EXHIBITION TOUR Sat 26 Feb | 10.00am - 1.30pm | £25.00 In this session, artist Ruth Osborne, will provide insight into her creative process and the symbolism and folklore derived from the natural world that have inspired her exhibition, ‘Land and Lore’ currently exhibiting in the Market Place Gallery. Following a short tour of Ruth’s exhibition for ideas and inspiration, you will take part in a printmaking workshop to create your own Linen Lantern. You will use Irish Linen, coloured paints and inks, and learn the techniques of nature printing processes using fresh seasonal and dried foliage and the associated folklore and symbolism of native plants to create your art work.

Each participant will be taught traditional jewellery making techniques such as piercing, soldering, shaping, texturing and polishing to create a beautiful pair of rings to take home. Personalise and add colour to your ring by adding one or two semi-precious stones. No previous experience is required. All you need to bring is an apron and bundles of enthusiasm!

In a nod to St. Patrick’s Day, you will be making an abstract extravaganza in green. You’ll work almost entirely in green, mixing your own shades and using every shade of green you can think of; be it emerald, forest, mint or neon.

Materials used will include watercolours, ink and a variety of different markers to create a range of imaginative sample pieces. Using stencils as well as free flow patterns, you will build up your art work in layers. Once you have mastered the different techniques you will finish by creating a final masterpiece which will be framed for that professional finish and ready to take home.

You’ll use rolling pins and textured stamps and fabric to add interest to your clay creations. Ciara will then take your pieces home to her studio where they will be dried, fired and glazed in her kiln. Ready to collect in three weeks.

Join textile artist Caóilfíonn Murphy O’Hanlon who will guide you through the calm meditative process of designing and creating a beautiful Spring wet felted wool painting. Using a blend of wet felting and stitch, you will explore some nuno techniques with different blends of delicate wools, silks and stitch. Be it a rendition of your favourite flowers, or beautiful country landscape, you can bring your own image to use as a guide to create your unique piece of artwork.

Caóilfíonn will demonstrate a range of embroidery stitches and knot thread work so you can embellish your landscape further.

All felting materials are provided but participants should bring an image of choice to work from, one bath towel and small hand towel, a basic sewing kit with embroidery threads, seed beads and beading needle, scissors and basin/plastic bowl.

Join expert glass artist Keith Sheppard for this fused glass workshop to create a beautiful 20” x 10” freestanding curved glass landscape or two 10” x 10” glass landscapes. The freestanding piece will look stunning set close to a window, or in the evenings will glow beautifully with a small candle set behind it. The two flat glass landscapes can be set in one or two mounted box frames and hung as a decorative artwork on the wall. Working with different coloured glass, Keith will teach you various design techniques, demonstrate the tools required for glass cutting and how to work safely and handle glass with confidence. Your completed fused glass landscapes will be taken back to Keith’s studio for firing and returned to the venue one to two weeks later for collection.

Vallely@80 JB Vallely Sat 20 Nov 2021 - Sat 15 Jan 2022 JB Vallely Retrospective Market Place Gallery | Archbishops Palace Benburb Priory | Gallery & Foyer Walls Vallely at 80 is a major retrospective of international and award-winning artist J.B. Vallely, revisiting his drawings and oil paintings covering almost 63 years as well as new work completed during his 80th year.

His largest solo exhibition of work since his major retrospective at the Market Place Gallery, in his birth city of Armagh [2000]. This exhibition also includes his collection permanently displayed in the Archbishops Palace, Armagh covering most of Vallely’ s life as a painter and his collection of religious Art on permanent display at Benburb Priory, dating from the early to mid-1960’s.

Valley’s subject matter depicts rural Irish themes, including its strong traditions of which he is passionate about on a personal level. Music, sport, mythology, history and culture feature predominantly in his paintings. He has produced a vast number of pieces over his career, exhibiting regularly at galleries in Belfast, Dublin, Derry and Armagh with occasional exhibitions in Italy, Wexford, London, Scotland and Galway.

Vallely at 80 can be viewed at three locations across Armagh, with new works and the artist’s private collection exhibited at the Market Place Gallery.

This exhibition brings together textile art, printmaking and natural materials to inspire a connection to nature and explore the historical symbolism and beliefs embedded in our landscape.

ANIAR ADUAIDH | OUT OF THE BLUE BRENDAN BRANKIN Fri 28 Jan - Sat 5 March | Foyer Walls “The blue light from an explosion in 1973 is like a beacon that has sent an illumination forwards through my art and poetry. Lighting a slow fuse to my imagination”.

Brendan Brankin exhibits a range of mixed media works in acrylic and pastel, inspired by past memories that have had a profound effect on his life. Brankin’s mark making is fast paced and momentary, his canvases often display an explosion of colour with gentle shapes or linear formations. Out of the Blue will also include a selection of poems written by the artist over the past year and half

BUILE SHUIBHNE ‘SWEENEY ASTRAY’ CALLIGRAPHIC PAINTINGS

BY DESMOND KINNEY Fri 11 March - Sat 30 April | Gallery Northern Ireland born international artist Desmond Kinney is best known for his revival of the technique of working with mosaics through various large-scale murals and public art works, mainly focused on Irish myths and Legends. In the 1980’s he started illustrated calligraphy, working on Seamus Heaney’s translation Sweeney Astray, creating paintings in the medium of watercolour. The Home of Saint Patrick Festival 2022 and The Market Place Gallery are delighted to exhibit sixteen of Kinney’s stunning illustrations which have never been exhibited publically before. Buile Shuibhne, in English ‘The Madness of Sweeney’ is an old Irish myth immortalised in verse, composed during the 12th Century. It tells the story of Sweeney, King of the Dál nAraidi, who commits violent acts against St. Ronan Finn and his monks and is cursed to wander naked around Ireland.

Sweeney is driven mad by the curse, becoming a wildman living in forests and wilderness, and at one point grows feathers like a bird.

The poem inspired many writers including Seamus Heaney who made his own translation of it, published in 1984. Heaney’s friend, artist Desmond Kinney, enamoured by the work, turned it into a series of watercolours featuring his personalised calligraphy (a medium he had trained in as a student) and illustrated vignettes of the mad king living in trees, existing wild and unkempt, a tormented soul. The paintings are highly idiosyncratic, redolent of medieval manuscripts, yet also contemporary in their graphic composition.

Desmond Kinney also transformed the Buile Shuibhne into a large mosaic frieze which is situated at the University of Limerick. The mosaic made in Venetian vitrious glass features quotations from Seamus Heaney’s text. The poet and the painter remained lifelong friends.

INFLUENCED BY VAN GOGH ARMAGH ART CLUB Fri 11 March - Mon 16 May | Foyer Walls 2022 is a huge year for Armagh Art Club, marking 60 years since it was founded in 1962. The members today are as proud and delighted with their club as ever, and strive to always meet the highest standards. With mixed ability membership, the sessions are never dull, each one learning something from the other. With expert tutors, the club members have progressed in the techniques and theory of Art. The club also has a very healthy social side, arranging painting trips in Ireland, Spain or wherever the members decide.

With virtually every member a fan of Vincent Van Gogh, the theme of ‘Paintings with A Van Gogh Influence’ has proved extremely popular and challenging, and the resulting exhibition is a group of original, interesting and beautiful work.

TOLD/UNTOLD ELIN JOHNSTON Fri 6 May - Sat 2 July | Gallery Through her work, Elin Johnston investigates aspects of collective and individual corporeal presence, conditions of self and impact upon place, and makes visible resonances of embedded cultural, social, and industrial memory.

In these inter-related series, she employs Video and Experimental Moving Image, 2D Digital Imaging, and 3D Sculptural Assemblage to interpret and signify thematic perceptions, emotions, and concerns which, whether revealed or withheld, serve to shape and define individual or shared values and responses.

ELIN JOHNSTON MA Elin is an award-winning Visual Artist in practice since 2010. Her practice is inter-disciplinary in basis with digital process at it’s core, and has been exhibited and screened nationally and internationally, including digital arts and film festivals in Berlin, Copenhagen, Athens, Porto, and USA. PLEASE NOTE THERE IS A £1.00 PER TICKET BOOKING FEE FOR TICKETS PURCHASED ONLINE. BOOK BY TELEPHONE Mon to Sat from 9.30am to 4.30pm. On performance evenings we take telephone bookings until 7.00pm. The easiest way to pay is by credit or debit card. Payment can also be made by cheque, payable to ‘Armagh City, Banbridge and Craigavon District Council’.

Once purchased, your ticket is your property. The Market Place Theatre cannot refund its value to you, nor exchange it for any other ticket under any circumstances. If you cannot attend the performance for any reason, you have the option of selling or giving your ticket to another person.

Where a performance goes ahead we accept no responsibility for tickets that are unable to be used due to circumstances outside of our control, for example bad weather and transport difficulties.

SUPPORT ACTS

Smoking, electronic cigarettes, the use of mobile phones, photography and video equipment and food and drinks are strictly prohibited in both auditoria.

All details are correct at time of going to print. We reserve the right to alter the programme in the event of any unforeseen circumstances.

For some performances, a support act will precede the headline act, particularly for popular music events and comedy. Whilst The Market Place endeavours to inform patrons about such support acts in advance, on some occasions this may not be possible.

CHILDREN Children aged two and under may attend suitable performances for free but must be seated and must be in possession of a valid ticket.

SPECIAL ASSISTANCE Our staff are delighted to provide special assistance, if required, to disabled and other theatregoers. Our facilities include spaces for ten wheelchairs, lifts to all levels of the building, low level access at the Box Office, and an infra-red system to assist patrons with hearing difficulties.

Customers using wheelchairs or those who require special assistance attending an event should contact the Box Office in advance so that appropriate assistance can be arranged.

STROBE LIGHTING : FLASH LIGHTING LIGHTING EFFECTS During many performances at The Market Place Theatre, lighting effects are used, including strobe lighting.

Patrons who may experience difficulties with such effects should note that The Market Place Theatre will post notices around the venue to make you aware when strobe lighting will be used.
