THE MISSION
The F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund was established in 1996 by the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA-MN) to guarantee a vibrant future for exemplary choral music in the state of Minnesota. Its mission is to provide active Minnesota choral conductors with professional development opportunities, to encourage and support talented young musicians to pursue choral conducting as a career, and to provide administrative support for ACDA-MN.
THE INSPIRATION
The endowment’s namesake, F. Melius Christiansen (18711955), was a Norwegian immigrant who is considered the “father” of a cappella singing in North America. Christiansen founded the St. Olaf Choir in Northfield, Minnesota, and shaped it into arguably the best-known collegiate choir in the world. For nearly thirty years, he used an ethic of hard work to achieve perfect intonation, seamless ensemble blend, and crisp diction. The F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund recognizes Christiansen’s inspirational contributions to the choral art.
THE IMPACT
In addition to providing administrative support for ACDA-MN, the F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund offers scholarships to ACDA of Minnesota conductors studying at the undergraduate or graduate levels and to conductors actively directing academic, community, corporate, faith-based and professional choral ensembles. Four scholarship programs provide financial support for ACDA-MN members to attend Summer Dialogue, ACDA national and division conferences, the World Symposium on Choral Music, and to pursue graduate study in choral conducting. Scholarship descriptions and the 2012 recipients are listed below.
SUMMER DIALOGUE SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships to attend this four-day ACDA of Minnesota annual professional development conference are available to conductors with up to two years of experience and conductors with any length of experience who have never attended a previous Summer Dialogue. The 2012 Summer Dialogue recipients were:

ACDA CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships to attend ACDA division or national conferences are awarded annually to undergraduate junior or senior vocal music education majors or graduate students in choral conducting who are student members of ACDAMN. Scholarship recipients who attended the ACDA North Central Division Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, during 2012 were: Kathrynne Buckmaster, St. Cloud State University Ryan Fellman, Concordia College-Moorhead Randall Olson, St. Cloud State University

GRADUATE STUDY SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships to study choral conducting part-time or full-time in graduate schools across the country are available to conductors who have completed a minimum of two years of choral conducting and are current members of ACDAMN. The 2012 graduate study scholarship recipients were:

WORLD SYMPOSIUM ON CHORAL MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP The International Federation for Choral Music sponsors a World Symposium on Choral Music every three years. The next symposium will be held in Seoul, South Korea, from August 7-14, 2014. A scholarship to attend the symposium will be offered to current ACDA-MN members who have been active in the organization for a minimum of five years. There was no scholarship recipient in 2012 since a symposium was not held.

CONTRIBUTE TO THE ALICE T. LARSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP To celebrate the 85th anniversary of Alice T. Larsen’s birth, a scholarship is being established in her memory through the F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund (FMC Endowment Fund) of the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota. Alice T. Larsen had a significant and pioneering influence upon the early development of women’s voices and choirs during her inspiring tenure as Professor of Music (1955-1989) and conductor of the Manitou Singers at St. Olaf College. The Alice T. Larsen Memorial Scholarship will be awarded in the future to an ACDA-MN woman conductor who is pursuing a graduate degree in choral conducting. • You are invited to make a tax-deductible contribution to the Alice T. Larsen Memorial Scholarship. • All scholarship donor names will be printed in the November 23, 2013, showcase concert program titled: A Celebration of Women’s Voices: Empowering the Spirit which will honor the legacy of Alice T. ACDA OF MINNESOTA’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION During November 16-18, 2012, thousands of enthusiastic concert patrons, along with hundreds of singers from twelve distinctive Minnesota choirs, converged to celebrate three inspiring concerts in one amazing weekend in observance of fifty golden years of supporting choral music in our state by the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota (ACDA-MN). Proceeds from the benefit concerts will assist with supporting the scholarship program of the F. Melius Christiansen Endowment Fund.
