Summer brings the opening of our highly anticipated Assisted Living at ACC Greenhaven Terrace! Our suites feature large one-bedroom units with full kitchens and smaller units designed for efficiency and affordability. With six different floor plans to choose from, comfortable dining, an extensive activities program, and a wonderful and caring staff, we look forward to making ACC Assisted Living your home! Residents have access to the full spectrum of services provided by ACC to enhance life and to accommodate changing abilities and needs. Wellness, educational and recreational activities are offered through the ACC Senior Services Center, many of which are also held at ACC Greenhaven Terrace.

Our new Assisted Living staff began their training on the week of May 19th, and we are welcoming new residents to move in beginning May 28th. For a list of our ACC Assisted Living staff members, please see page 6. ...Continued on page 6

8th Annual ACC Golf Tournament

It was an unusually cold and windy May day during ACC Senior Services’ 8th Annual Golf Tournament.

Luckily, our players had their ACC 2014 golf tournament sweaters to keep themselves warm while playing a round of golf. Afterwards, staff, volunteers and players alike enjoyed a delicious meal generously provided by L&L Hawaiian Barbeque. ...Continued on page 3

Have you kept up with us since the Spring Newsletter? ACC has been very busy and I have several updates to share. First, we added a new board member in March, Pam Saltenberger.

Last year, Pam helped lead ACC managers and supervisors in the Studer Leadership Development Institute Program to develop the leadership skills of the staff. This provided an opportunity for Pam to get familiar with ACC and she eagerly joins the Board of Directors. I’m excited to have such a talented board for ACC. Don’t be shy, when you see a Board member, say hi and chat with us. We always enjoy hearing from you.

In April ACC launched an updated website at www. accsv.org. The website is easy to navigate and has a lot of information on ACC programs and activities. All the photos of the ACC staff, volunteers, participants, and users of ACC services are vibrant and wonderful.

The new website better reflects what ACC is all about.

At the Nursing Home, a project to upgrade the dining room lights, ceiling and floor was completed.

There is energy efficient LED lighting (provided by a SMUD grant), new ceiling tiles, fresh paint on the walls, and a new beautiful wood floor. The ACC facebook page has photos for you to see. In addition the Nursing Home received the Quality and Accountability Award from the California Department of Public Health and the Department of Health Care Services in recognition of the quality of care provided

Congratulations to Administrator Melanie Henderson and the Nursing Home staff on this recognition from the State, the award is well deserved and demonstrates the dedication of the Nursing Home staff.

If you haven’t heard yet……ACC received its Residential Care Facility for the Elderly license in early May. Assisted living at Greenhaven Terrace is now a reality and makes another milestone for ACC as we continue to meet the needs of the community. Staff are busy interviewing all the families on the “interested” list and several are signingup. ACC plans to schedule move-ins the last week of May onward. A grand opening gala is in the works - look for an announcement and read the article in this newsletter by Chance Lattasima, the Assistant Community Manager.

Congratulations to ACC.

As ACC continues to meet the needs of the community, we also outgrow our space. Last year ACC acquired the prior Merryhill Middle School site located at 7334 Park City Drive right across from ACC’s Senior Services Center

(formerly ACC Park City) location. Planning is underway for the ACC Administrative Offices and the ACC Senior Services classes to move over to what will be the ACC Campus. ACC will have the benefit of large-sized classrooms, staff offices, and meeting rooms that will fill the 15,000 square foot space. ACC Meals on Wheels Administrative staff will move to the former Park City location.

ACC appreciates the work of Ken Murai and Ed Kado who are working on the floor plans.

We hope to move into the new building before yearend and will keep you updated.

As you can see, ACC is always moving forward and with that, the Board of Directors, Committee Chairs, and interested stakeholders will be having a strategic retreat on June 21, 2014. At the strategic retreat we will be discussing the topic “Continuum of Care” and how the definition may affect the vision of what ACC does now and in the future. ACC continues its awareness of older adult issues, the affordable care act, long-term care, and funding. As a non-profit, ACC Senior Services works to stay informed, provide programs and services for older adults, and to improve and meet the needs of the community. We’ll keep you informed on ACC’s strategic vision, as you are very important to us.

On the horizon, save the date for the 28th Annual ACC Nursing Home Fundraiser on September 13, 2014 at Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation.

6th Annual ACC Crab Feed

The 6th annual ACC Crab Feed kicked off early on February 22 with volunteers, including the Cosumnes River College culinary students, prepping food for the Saturday evening event.

As the hungry dinner crowd made its way into the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation(SASF), the mouthwatering scent of Don Lee’s flavorful garlic and ginger crab was fresh in the air. Diners looking to satiate their thirst chose from Don Morishita’s Mai Tais and a selection of beers and wines. For those with a sweet tooth, volunteer bakers provided mouth-watering desserts.

The evening concluded with a comedic Lorna Fong calling the lucky winners of the Last Person Standing raffle.

The crab festivities ended late February 22 as volunteers cleaned the SASF kitchen, restoring it to its original tidiness.

Major kudos to crab feed event co-chairs Lori Lee and Debbie Seid, and all of the committee members and volunteers for their dedicated support. Many thanks also to the SASF staff and volunteers for their enormous help. Everyone’s combined efforts made it into another successful ACC event!

8th Annual ACC Golf Tournament ...continued from front page

ACC had its first-ever hole-in-one, and the lucky winner of the $1,000 prize was none other than Judy Fukuman, a returning participant of ACC’s golf tournament. Wayne Shimizu and Shirley Opie and Winston and Loretta Ashizawa generously contributed the prize money. As has been an annual occurrence since the first golf tournament, General Lorna Fong’s team remains undefeated for the title of High Gross score for the eighth year in a row. As General Fong put it: “General Fong’s Team. Always trying!” (See the full list of results on page 5).

The Golf Tournament Committee and ACC would like to thank businesses and individuals who donate to the golf tournament. The committee would like to give a special thanks to our volunteers who devote their time to organizing the tournament and soliciting for prizes and sponsorships. These are difficult tasks, but our volunteers always get it done!

ACC is lucky to have such great community support.

ACC Drop-In Respite Changes This Summer

ACC’s day respite services began in 2002. A small, 5 hours a day, one day a week program grew into a 2 day a week “ACC Drop-In Respite & Caregiver Cooperative,” serving 50 families annually. Additionally, the Monday “Social Day Program” was an off-shoot of Drop-In Respite, providing a program for more active seniors. In 2008 the National Alliance for Caregiving and Metlife Foundation gave Drop-In Respite the Award for “Innovation, Responsiveness, and Effectiveness.”

Earlier this year, staff and our major funder for ACC Respite, Area 4 Agency on Aging had some discussion about our programs. As family caregivers, staff, and management, we’ve taken an in-depth look at our existing day services and thoughtfully considered how we might strengthen supports for family caregivers and position ACC to assure the array of services caregivers will need in the future. Recently, ACC managers and the ACC Program Committee, with the approval of the ACC Board of Directors, have made the difficult decision to discontinue ACC Day Respite and the Monday Social Day Program on June 30, 2014, when current grant funding is also ending.

There are many reasons behind this course of action and as you may imagine, the decision has been an extremely challenging one for ACC as well. We are committed to work with each family individually to access other resources for their loved one’s care. All other ACC community programs will remain. The ACC Bridge to Healthy Families will continue to work with families on caregiving issues. We will hire a Care Coordinator to provide assessments for caregivers and care receivers, targeting limited-English speakers and non-English

speakers. Our MSW intern, Keri Miller, will be available for transition support on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in June. Additionally, Bonnie Chow, the Alzheimer’s Association Family Care Associate will hold “consultation hours” at ACC on the first and last Monday during the summer, and possibly longer. The City of Sacramento’s Triple R program will continue to be located at ACC, and will start Wednesday and Friday service to accommodate the families who have participated in ACC Day Respite. We look forward to a continued partnership with Triple R. We believe that this decision will both strengthen available adult day services, and enable ACC to expand its caregiver support efforts. ACC will continue its Legacy Corps/AmeriCorps Friendly Visitor program and ACC Rides will continue to transport elders to Triple R and other programs.

It has been our honor and privilege to work with Respite and Social Day families and care for their loved ones. We thank families for entrusting the care of their elders to ACC. ACC remains committed to help families navigate their caregving journey.

Relationships to Nurture and Grow

As a Legacy Corps member, I have the opportunity to connect with seniors in their home. I served my client for less than five months yet it felt longer because we connected instantly.

Within the first hour we became friends.

My client was a sweet woman with so much talent and wisdom. She collected dolls of all sizes and gave them a home.

If dolls were unwanted, she adopted them, cleaned them, and knitted beautiful clothes for them. She gave them life.

Her creative spirit inspired me to hone my own creativity that had been lost since childhood. She taught me that we are never too old for an imagination. Her love for gardening also provided lessons of patience. With so many pots of plants, she treated

each of them like pets and encouraged them to grow. Many of these plants had been with her for over 40 years. Not only did she cultivate them with water and sunlight, she nurtured them with love and passion. I learned so much from her simply by being her companion.

Not surprisingly, it was hard to say goodbye when I learned of her move to assisted living. After a hug and farewell kiss, I drove off and suddenly realized that she was running after my car. Tears welled up in her eyes as she apologized and said she would miss me. Although I was happy she would be in a safe place and closer to her family, I shared in her tears. My client showed me a new perspective on life, and I’m happy to have met such a wonderful person.

In April, we bid a fond farewell to our beloved Chinese Brush Painting instructor, Han Moy, who retired and relocated to the Bay Area. Mr. Moy was a volunteer instructor with ACC for over 12 years. In addition to Chinese Brush Painting, he taught Tai Chi classes and even taught Tai Chi to Respite participants. Mr. Moy also generously donated his paintings for door prizes at our Lunar New Year pot luck in February. Prior to leaving, he presented ACC with two beautiful paintings, which are now hanging in ACC Senior Services Center. Thank you, Mr. Moy, for your generosity and years of service!

The new and improved Rush River Dining Room at ACC Nursing Home has officially re-opened. Thanks to a grant from SMUD, ACC will was able to install state of the art, energy efficient LED lighting with a computerized control system. We also made much needed repairs and replacement to the ceiling and flooring and repainted the room to enhance the dining experience. Make sure to come by and see the changes.

A graduate of State University NY at Stony Brook on Long Island, Joseph H. Phillips (aka J the guitar teacher) was self-taught as a musician. He has a comprehensive background in Music Theory and has taught Music in both public and private schools. J currently gives music lessons and teaches after school programs at Courtyard School in midtown and Carmichael Montessori Project.

Whatever your taste in music, J will teach you instantly recognizable songs that are suited to your individual skill level. There are Beatles songs like “Your Mother Should Know,” “Penny Lane,” “Honey Pie,” and “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer,” along with plenty of sixties and seventies music, as well as Blues.

According to J, “During the past 17 years as a Music teacher it’s been my honor to share great songs with folks of my generation and pass them along to subsequent generations as well. Every song that I’ve presented to a student has been one that personally moved me when I first heard it.”

News from ACC Senior Services Center

In April, we said good-bye to Janny Wu, our Easy Tai Chi and Beginner/ Intermediate Tai Chi Gong instructor. Two of Janny’s senior students will be taking over her classes. Sabitre Rodriguez is now teaching Easy Tai Chi and Beginner Tai Chi Gong. Sabitre has studied Tai Chi for over 10 years. Starting in September, Stella Chuk will be teaching Intermediate Tai Chi Gong. Welcome, Sabitre and Stella!

Jimmy “Kimo” Collins, who has been our Beginning Guitar instructor since December, is departing Sacramento for the white sands and blue waters of Hawaii.

Bridge to Healthy Families Services Update

The Bridge To Healthy Families, which originated as a dementia care network in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Association and UC Davis Alzheimer’s Disease Center in 2009, expanded services to include caregivers of all older adults, with or without dementia. A recent $50,000 grant from The SCAN Health Plan, through their Community Giving program funded “scholarships” that assisted income-qualified caregivers in myriad ways. Through this program 43 caregivers received services including respite via ACC Respite, Social Day Program, Legacy Corps, and Triple R. Caregivers were able to have their loved one receive a cognitive assessment, buy assistive devices, and use in-home supportive services. Another popular service were home modifications, such as putting in grab bars and wheelchair ramps. The follow case study illustrates how we help families:

Meals on Wheels referred NN and TN, a married couple, to our program. NN is 85 years old and a survivor of a major stroke. He has also been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Dementia. TN is JL’s wife and has been JL’s caregiver for many years now. She had some brief help from a family member, who has since left the area. It is now just NN and TN at home.

BHF’s community nurse and social work intern provided an in-home assessment. TN scored high on the a caregiver risk screen, indicating a high stress level. The BHF team developed a care plan to give TN some much needed respite and help.

Due to mobility and transportation issues for the couple, all parties agreed that that in-home support care would be most beneficial. TN was impressed by the BHF intern’s follow-up and support and very happy, saying, “I am so relieved to be getting this scholarship to receive additional in-home support”.

While the scholarship program just ended, Bridge to Healthy Families will continue helping families with their caregiving needs. A new grant from Area 4 Agency on Aging will support Bridge to Healthy Families caregiver and care receiver assessments. A new position, “Care Coordinator” will be filled soon. This staff member will conduct assessments on caregivers and their loved one(s), with the goal of developing care plans and accessing resources. Another new service is “consultation hours” by the Alzheimer’s Association. Bonnie Chow, MSW, Family Care Associate from the Alzheimer’s Association will have consultation hours to answer questions and concerns related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia this summer, during the first and fourth Mondays of the month. How It Feels to Be An ACC Volunteer

On Sunday April 27th, I attended my first ACC Volunteer Luncheon. As a firsttimer to the event, I was honored to be among so many wonderful people who had the same passion and interest in care for the elderly as I had. I started volunteering at the nursing home initially to fulfill a school service requirement; however, I kept going every Sunday even after my requirement was fulfilled because I had become so attached to the people there—the residents and the volunteers alike.

I recognized a few of the volunteers from the nursing home at the event, but what surprised me was the diversity of the people who were there. There were a few teenagers my age, most likely volunteers like me. There were young men and women in their early twenties. There were also seniors present at the luncheon, who have been longtime volunteers for ACC. All these people, of all different races and backgrounds, had come together to be recognized for their outstanding commitment and dedication to ACC.

One of the volunteers whom I met was Mr. Tom Nakagawa, a multitalented 80-year-old author, entrepreneur, and gifted musician who offers his time to provide entertainment for residents at the ACC Nursing Home. Mr. Nakagawa—or more popularly known in Sacramento as the Karaoke King—visits once a month at ACC to perform a variety of songs. In spite of a recent injury, Mr. Nakagawa keeps up with his commitment, even bringing along his personal caregiver, who happens to be a ukulele player, to accompany him. His story is the type of dedication that inspired me and made me feel proud to be a part of this volunteer community.

Becoming a volunteer at ACC is like being welcomed into a warm and caring family, and I definitely felt this sense of belonging at my first luncheon. I can’t wait to continue my work with ACC and grow closer to all these amazing people.
