THE SECRET OF THE ACC CARE CENTER WAY For 32 years, children, women and men have visited the ACC Care Center, coming away with admiration and gratitude for the care their loved ones have received and the responsive attention to their specific family needs and requests. How does an operation with 115 staff maintain a track record of this kind of success?

The secret to the ACC Care Center success starts with leadership and extends all the way to the most recent hire on the nursing, maintenance, activities or culinary teams. Care Center Administrator Melanie Segar joined ACC seven years ago with the goal of continuing the legacy of excellence our founding families envisioned. She was elected to the board of the California Association of Health Facilities (CAHF) in 2015 and is now in her second term as the Non-Profit Conference Chair.

On Thursday, May 10, 2018 at 8:00am, ACC Senior Services will host the 12th Annual Golf Tournament at Teal Bend Golf Club. There will be tee and raffle prizes, an awards ceremony, and a delicious luncheon included with registration. The registration fee for a foursome is $500, or $125 per individual player. There are also opportunities to support this event through sponsorships and in-kind donations.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

By Winston Ashizawa Happy New Year Everyone! I have great news about our new Chief Executive Officer being hired by the ACC Board: He has already been hard at work since January 16. You may be surprised by this announcement, but it is the result of the ACC Board of Directors responding to Donna Yee’s announcement that she intended to step down from the CEO position this year, timed with a successful search and orderly transition of her responsibilities.

We can all thank Donna for always thinking of ACC first.

So let’s review the successful executive search for our new CEO. The ACC Board tasked the Board President and its Board Development Committee with a lead role to first conduct a search for a specialized consulting firm to help find our new CEO. That process led to three top firms which were interviewed, ranked and the top firm hired: The firm was Wilcox, Miller & Nelson with 39 years of experience in conducting successful executive searches. Diane D. Miller, the firm’s President, provided direct aid to ACC in a four month active search process that had over 200 applicants.

The top eight candidates from this nationwide search were interviewed and narrowed down to four candidates. The top outstanding applicant was recommended to the full Board of Directors, which agreed with the nomination and hired Darrick Lam. The search committee included Wayne Shimizu, past ACC Board President, William Yee, past ACC Board President, Diane Van Maren, current ACC Board member, Brian Chin, past ACC Board President and current Meals on Wheels by ACC Board President, and me, your current ACC Board President.

As a non-voting member, Donna Yee also participated in her usual insightful, crucial role, and Tony Waterford, ACC Human Resources Director provided key staff support for the entire executive search process. This resulted in us finding the ideal

candidate. Darrick is already hard at work at ACC, and he found temporary housing near the ACC Campus. His home and wife remain in San Mateo while they plan where exactly to move in our area. In the meantime, Donna Yee is now Consultant in Residence as she continues to work with Darrick and staff.

We also are planning a CEO Gala where we can honor Donna’s 17 years of excellent service and leadership.

The CEO Gala will be held on April 14 at the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation in Elk Grove. Per Donna’s desire, proceeds from the Gala will go towards the ACC Capital Campaign to match the Art and Barbara Tom $500,000 pledge match.

If you would like to be a sponsor of the event, there are many levels to consider up to a top level of $20,000. We already have one sponsor at $15,000. Table sponsorships start at only $750 for four seats. Individual tickets are $100 each. And if the date isn’t good for your calendar, we welcome gifts honoring Donna which can be done at the ACC website, or mailing/delivering a check.

So we are extremely happy to move into 2018 with a new, excellently qualified CEO, Darrick Lam, his “new” consultant in residence Donna Yee, and one big party ahead on April 14. Please come and introduce yourself to Darrick, say hello and thanks to Donna, and continue to help us serve seniors in this community.

By Darrick Lam It’s really my honor to serve as the new CEO of ACC Senior Services. First and foremost, I would like to thank all the members of the ACC Board of Directors for their vote of confidence and selecting me as a successor of Donna L. Yee, PhD. Under Donna’s leadership, ACC has received a 5-Star rating for 3½ years from the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services; named as one of the Best Nursing Homes by U.S. News & World Reports for 2016/2017; received the QASP Award for 3 years from the State of California Department of Health Care Services; received the Bronze Quality Award (2016), and the Silver Quality Award (2017) from the American Health Care Association, just to name a few of the most recent honors.

Donna L. Yee, Ph.D. has stepped down as ACC Senior Services CEO. Darrick Lam began his tenure as the Chief Executive Officer at ACC Senior Services on January 16, 2018 and has embarked on a 90-day transition journey to meet stakeholders, staff, volunteers and supporters of ACC Senior Services and Meals on Wheels

by ACC. Darrick brings 27 years of experience in the field of aging and long-term services and support. Having many years of committed volunteerism, he has taken several hands-on and leadership roles with the San Mateo-Foster City Community Education Foundation, the Alzheimer’s Association-Northern California & Northern Nevada, the American Society on Aging, and the California Association of Area Agencies on Aging. In his spare time,

Darrick and his wife Jackie enjoy dining out and traveling. The couple has two daughters who are pursuing undergraduate degrees at Wheaton College in Illinois and UC Davis.

Recently, he worked with the US Department of Health and Human Services in the San Francisco Regional Office for the Administration on Aging and Administration for Community Living.

He provided program consultation to state and local government agencies, other federal agencies, community organizations, and institutions of higher learning in Region IX, and technical assistance and grants management of Older Americans Act programs in California, Hawaii, American Samoa, and tribal organizations in California and Hawaii.

ACC CEO GALA: CELEBRATING 17 YEARS OF DR. YEE’S LEADERSHIP The community has a special opportunity to honor the tremendous work and outstanding leadership Dr. Donna L. Yee has given to all of us by sponsoring and attending the celebration ACC CEO Gala event on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at the Sacramento Asian Sports Foundation.

As the first Asian Community Center Executive Director (2000), then as the first ACC Senior Services CEO (2008), Donna shared these reflections on her 17 years of service, as she prepares for the CEO Gala celebration in April: “I believe my tenure at ACC has been a partnership modeled on the many ways a non-profit is truly owned by a voluntary Board from the community it serves. So it’s easy for me to envision ‘stepping-down’ as an opportunity to ‘take a different seat at the table’ – to continue contributing to ACC’s growth

Before his passing, Frank Palmer beamed when sharing his thoughts about the “Secret of the ACC Care Center Way”. His wife Mary was admitted to the Care Center in 2017 with different health issues. Frank soon joined Mary as a Care Center resident at 88 years of age with what he shared as “enough perspective to describe why a place like this is so important to the community.” He was by her side as Mary Primikiris Palmer passed away peacefully on February 3, 2018 at the Care Center. Two weeks later Frank Palmer passed away under hospice care at the Care Center.

As he took the time during his last days of life to talk about the most important things in his life, Frank reflected on their experiences as a couple at the Care Center: “When I came here, I didn’t know what to expect. The caring staff and the quality of the care … all staff are as cheerful as they can be...The ACC Care Center must remain and be supported by the people of Sacramento 100 percent!

I will make a financial contribution to sustain the Care Center and I ask everyone to give … so that many others may receive the wonderful life saving service my wife and I received here at ACC.” Special thanks to Frank Palmer for spreading joy and happiness throughout the ACC Care Center.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT As an ACC volunteer photographer for over 20 years, Paul Quong has captured many historical events, memories, and highlights. Paul’s passion for photography is expressed through his enthusiasm, caring, and willingness to tell stories through his photographs.

Now at the age of 87, Paul continues to support ACC. As a committed volunteer, he still captures special moments and memories at different ACC events like the ACC Care Center Fundraiser, ACC Craft and Bake Sale, and ACC Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon. Along with ACC, Paul actively volunteers for other organizations, and has taken pictures for the California Association of Highway Patrolmen, Asian Peace Officers Association, and Sacramento Fire Department. We are lucky to have a talented photographer like Paul. Our mission continues to shine through every photo taken by him!

Thursday, May 3, 2018 is the Big Day of Giving, a local initiative to increase philanthropy in Sacramento and its surrounding areas.

Last year ACC’s Big Day of Giving party made the front page of the Sacramento Bee, and got covered by local TV channels.

We had an attentiongrabbing music video that went viral and was reproduced live on Good Day Sacramento. See

the video on YouTube by finding “ACC Senior Services,” “Hip hoppin’ seniors get down for the Big Day of Giving”).

We even had a flash mob dancing with a drone camera capturing their moves, while emcees Tina Machua and Franc Martinez kept the flow. Last year, we had a fashion show, a concert all day long, with ACC music groups, and guest artists. We are working hard on topping that in

2018! So far, we have most of the ACC music groups lined up We’ll have another fashion show, a special photography exhibit on the Asian American experience, and food sales. We’ll also be teaming up with other non-profits, so more surprises are in store on this special day. Come to ACC on the Big Day of Giving, from noon to 7:00pm, and have a great time.

REMEMBERING TAK ITO, A LONGTIME VOLUNTEER OF ACC SENIOR SERVICES ACC volunteers are wonderful people. Staff and our senior clients, class participants, and fundraiser event-goers get to know our volunteers to varying degrees.

Many of you may have gotten to know the petite white-haired woman with a beautiful smile, who volunteered at our Welcome Center four days a week. Tak Ito had been volunteering with Programs for four years, dating back to when we were across the street at the current Meals on Wheels building.

Tak was an office coordinator and receptionist who assisted with student registrations and general office help. When we moved into our current building, Tak joined the Welcome Center team, volunteering 20 hours/week.

She knew half of the people who came to ACC. People would come in the door and say, “Tak! What are you doing here?”

In her own way, Tak would do things that made things better. For example,

she was the one who supplied most of the candy at the Welcome Desk. She liked to spoil us by throwing staff a pizza party every year, knitting items for the Craft & Bake Sale, posing for photos (she is on our rack card for our Bridge to Healthy Families program and was featured in a fundraiser mailing), and best of all, taking us to lunch.

She loved introducing people to one of her favorite places: The Jointed Cue. We’d pony up to the bar and have a burger while the chef made Tak her usual lunch of egg sandwich, fries, and a Coke. She would insist that we get bacon on our burger. Sometimes, her husband, the legendary Ted Ito would be there, shooting pool. Always, people there would greet her.

When she turned 90, the Welcome Center threw her a surprise birthday party at ACC. She really was surprised and so pleased! Health reasons forced her to take a break from volunteering a few months ago. She recovered and we fully expected her to be back at

Sadly, Tak passed away in late January.

We feel fortunate that she chose ACC as the place to volunteer. She was a model of “aging well.” She kept herself busy, had many loyal friends and a loving family, and a great sense of humor. We are heartbroken and miss her and her warm smile very much.

OH, WHAT A NIGHT! CARE CENTER RESIDENT HAS MUSICAL EVENING Physical therapist Amanda Elmasian and occupational therapist Daniel Shelton went above and beyond and kindly made arrangements for transferring and driving resident Thomas Williams to see the musical Jersey Boys at Sacramento Community Center Theater in January. Elmasian and Shelton work for Therapy Specialists, a company that provides therapy for ACC Care Center Residents.

ACC STAFF RECOGNITION: ANGIE TORRES ACC Human Resources Generalist Angie Torres recently passed a rigorous exam in December 2017 and earned the Professional Human Resources (PHR) certification, accredited by the HR Certification Institute. This certification is an important career-long commitment that demonstrates credibility, dedication, and mastery of the principles of human resources. ACC wants to congratulate Angie for accomplishing this goal!

NEW BEGINNINGS AND FRIENDSHIPS THROUGH VOLUNTEERING AT ACC Brigette King is one of the many friendly volunteers you may recognize from the ACC Welcome Center. What makes Brigette’s volunteerism unique is that she is an active participant in the Senior Community Employment Service Program (SCSEP), a federally funded program aimed at helping senior citizens learn and acquire job skills for workforce readiness through community service. Recently, the SCSEP program had reached its one-year milestone as an ACC program.

A SCSEP participant since July 2017, Brigette states that she initially felt nervous about learning to re-enter the changing workforce.

“I hadn’t worked in over 25 years,” she said, “because I was a caregiver for my husband who had kidney disease and I had my own health problems too.”

After completing SCSEP’s intake process she was placed with the Programs Department under Program Director Linda Revilla.

“Every day I learn something new,” she said. “I never know what it’s going to be like every day, and I love that.”

Brigette credits the program for helping her develop important

clerical skills like communication and multitasking.

Another reason why she enjoys volunteering at ACC is the helpfulness of the staff members and fellow volunteers. Brigette especially likes working with Fernanda, a Work-Study student from Cristo Rey High School who helps ACC once a week. Fernanda is one of the four volunteers here from Cristo Rey’s Work-Study Program, which aims to support affordable college prep education through community service.

Fernanda shares many duties with Brigette, including greeting visitors at ACC’s Welcome Center and working on the Program Department’s online newsletter.

Fernanda said that volunteering helped her overcome her shyness: “The hardest part was getting into my comfort zone. I was very shy at first. But after a month I got more comfortable. I like being able to work with [other volunteers].”

With dreams of becoming a neurologist, Fernanda knows volunteering has taught her important life skills: “[Being at ACC], I learned that I have to adapt to different kinds of people,” Fernanda said. “I learned a lot about technology and good writing skills.”

Despite the differences in their volunteer schedule and age gap, both Brigette and Fernanda have found commonality in the values of volunteerism and continuous learning.

Brigette states that her faith is what motivates her every day, and the new skills and relationships she has developed as an ACC volunteer have helped her gain a new lease on life: “God is what keeps me going.

Now, at 59, it’s my beginning again.”
