WHAT DOES THE NEW KUNSTHAUS COST – AND WHO IS PAYING FOR WHAT? The Kunsthaus Zürich is sustained by the Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus and the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft. The Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft is responsible for the running of the Kunsthaus. With over 20,000 members it is one of the largest art associations in Europe. The Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus owns the properties and is responsible for the upkeep of the buildings. The City of Zurich, for its part, makes annual contributions to both institutions, which have been increased with the extension.

In order to realise the extension building, the three parties formed the Einfache Gesellschaft Kunsthaus-Erweiterung, which has assumed the role of the commissioning body. Once the construction work has been completed, the extension will be transferred to the Stiftung Zürcher Kunsthaus. The budget for the extension totals 206 million francs, of which – thanks to the commitment of many private art lovers – the Zürcher Kunstgesellschaft has been able to contribute 88 million francs. The City of Zurich has contributed an identical sum, while the Canton of Zurich has injected 30 million francs from the Lottery Fund and has additionally made the building land available in the form of a free leasehold. The broadly based financing is testimony to the fact that the Zürcher Kunsthaus is a house for the public.
