Harmonie – innere Schönheit – Ausgewogenheit: Das sind Begriffe, mit denen man die japanischen Keramiken im chinesischen Stil des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts umschreiben kann. Nicht nur die Einzigartigkeit dieser außergewöhnlichen Keramiken, sondern auch die künstlerischen, kulturellen und gesellschaftlichen Verbindungen zwischen China und Japan zeigt unsere neue Publikation Kindred Spirits beispielhaft auf (siehe Seiten 6–7).
Luxus – Exklusivität – künstlerische und technische Raffinesse: Diese Begriffe stehen für den exquisiten Schmuck der New Yorker Juweliere Marcus & Co. Deren Glanzstücke des Jugendstils und Art Déco werden zum ersten Mal eingehend untersucht und in den kunsthistorischen Kontext der Zeit gestellt (siehe Seiten 12–13).

Tibetan Women’s Jewelry describes the cultural history of Central Tibet told through traditional jewelry and trade from the 17th century of the 5th Dalai Lama through the 14th Dalai Lama’s 1959 exile to India. This art book presents ten distinctive styles of women’s relic boxes (Gaus), plus headdresses, ear pendants, shoulder chatelaines, and waist ornaments. The author’s fascinating interviews with the last living Lhasa noblewomen and master goldsmiths reveal original names and how and when these beautiful treasures were worn. This innovative study establishes for the first time that jewelry styles changed with each Dalai Lama, setting an important dating precedent for all Tibetan collectibles. Meticulous research makes this the definitive scholarly publication on Tibetan jewelry.

Lynn Levenberg, President of Lynn Levenberg Ltd., New York (US), specializes in Tibetan, Nepalese, Bhutanese, Ladakhi, and Mongolian jewelry. Her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in English literature are from Columbia University (US). From 1991 to 2014, she chose and extensively researched every piece in the large Barbara & David Kipper jewelry collection. Lynn Levenberg’s thirty years of research on Buddhist jewelry have made her the only knowledgeable expert in this field.

forms each of his distinctive sculptural objects from a single piece of solid wood. He consciously uses the wood’s natural properties and organic materiality in his architectural and landscape motifs, employing traditional techniques and interpreting them anew in extraordinary ways. He transforms the rigidity of the material into a seemingly gentle movement, incorporating the workmanship itself into an explicit part of the design. His representative motifs are characterized—above and beyond the formal concept—by intensive exploration into the reality of the living world and a high level of poetic abstraction.

Der aus Südtirol stammende Bildhauer Martin Kargruber (geb. 1965) formt seine unverwechselbaren skulpturalen Objekte aus jeweils einem kompakten Stück Holz. In seinen architektonischen und landschaftlichen Motiven setzt er die Naturhaftigkeit und die organische Materialität des Holzes bewusst ein. Dabei verwendet er traditionelle Techniken und interpretiert diese auf außergewöhnliche Weise neu. Es geling ihm, die Starre des Holzes in eine weich anmutende Bewegung zu transformieren und die Bearbeitung selbst bildhaft in die Gestaltung einzubeziehen. This outstanding jewelry collection of the Cologne Museum of Applied Arts (MAKK) will be showcased for the first time in a dedicated exhibition. Featuring cross-epochal and cross-cultural themes, the exhibition successfully presents diverse approaches to the art of jewelry-making. The photographs of around 370 objects and the accompanying descriptions demonstrate just how multifaceted jewelry design is. The social, societal, emotional, and symbolic aspects of jewelry are also evaluated and discussed in an essay by Beatriz Chadour-Sampson. The MAKK’s jewelry collection of around 1,600 works spans a period of 7,000 years: from ancient oriental gems from the 5th millennium BC to contemporar y jewelry. This is what makes this collection so unique and diverse.

Elisabeth von Krogh (b. 1947) has been a prominent figure in the field of ceramics in Norway for several decades. For almost 20 years, the artist and goldsmith Peter Bauhuis has been exploring a technique for which there are hardly any references. He has been working on the simultaneous casting of different metals ever since, plumbing the depths of the materials’ limitations. Antoine Leperlier initially studied painting but since the 1980s has been working as an independent glass artist, developing his own technique to create large-format translucent and painterly glass blocks. In this survey of work spanning more than 40 years, floating skulls or snakes frozen alive are discovered and what looks like abstract watercolors preserved forever—an approach unique in contemporary glass art.

The tubular steel furniture by Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) is considered an icon of design. Yet less known is the development of the first prototype for its early series production. Kálmán Lengyel (1900–1945) played a significant role in this. In 1927, the two designers founded the company Standard Möbel, in order to organize the series production and distribution of their iconic furniture.
Die Stahlrohrmöbel von Marcel Breuer (1902–1981) gelten als Designikonen. Unbekannter ist jedoch die Entwicklung vom ersten Prototypen zur frühen Serienproduktion. Eine wichtige Rolle spielte dabei Kálmán Lengyel (1900–1945). Zusammen gründeten die beiden Designer 1927 die Firma Standard Möbel, um die serielle Produktion und den Vertrieb der Stahlrohrmöbel zu organisieren.
