The inside story of RAD Britain s seminal skateboarding publication

Commentary from the original editorial team

Lovingly illustrated with archival photography

A thrill-ride ride through the skateboarding subculture of the 1970s, 80s and 90s

Perfect for skate fans and photography buffs

Read And Destroy the book that is. After years of archiving photos, scanning slides and looking for funding, a hardcover publication about the seminal UK skate magazine from the late 80s to mid- 90s can be in your hands very soon. Free Skateboard Magazine

an important piece of British skateboarding history that demands a space on your bookshelf. Slam City Skates London

For British skateboarders in the mid- 80s, RAD (aka Read and Destroy) was more than just a magazine. Before the X Games, before the internet, a whole generation of this once underground subculture relied onRAD to provide a beacon, bringing them together in spirit and in person.

Under the guidance of editor and chief photographer, Tim Leighton-Boyce,RAD took on an experimental, irreverent approach with a vibrant, chaotic energy. The legacy of the magazine is an action-packed photo archive documenting a unique time, place and attitude, capturing the death and rebirth of skateboarding as it evolved into a mainstay of extreme sports and street culture the world over.

This book reveals that archive in all its glory, offering an inside view of skateboarding and youth culture from the 1970s, 80s and 90s, told primarily through the experiences of the British skate photographers at the core of the magazine s original editorial team.

Featuring over 100 colour and black-and-white photographs, including some newly discovered and restored

Includes a new introduction by Michael Arnold, Eve s grandson and one of the trustees of the Arnold estate and archive

Foreword by Anjelica Huston

Biography of Marilyn Monroe by Eve Arnold

When they met at a party in the early 1950s, Marilyn Monroe remarked to Eve Arnold that she d seen the photographer s images of Marlene Dietrich. If you could do that well with Marlene, Monroe said, can you imagine what you could do with me? A star in her day and one that continues to captivate the world, Monroe s multifaceted persona is brilliantly captured through Arnold s lens in this revised and redesigned edition of the 1987 publication, Marilyn Monroe: An Appreciation Including newly discovered and restored photographs in colour and in black and white, alongside insightful commentary, Eve Arnold takes us on a photographic journey of Monroe s life. A detailed biography in Arnold s own words allows a rare glimpse into the stories behind the photographs and her unique relationship with Monroe. As these two female artists come together in the creation of this stunning photographic collection, an important historical testimonial has been actualised, showing women striving in a male-oriented world and succeeding in reaching the top of their game.

American photojournalist Eve Arnold has travelled all over the globe photographing a wide range of subjects, from the rich and famous to people from everyday life. She strove to reach areas that were underrepresented, such as the civil rights and Black power movements, Arabian women in harems and hammams, the subject of birth, the poor, the old and the underdogs. Her interest in photography began in 1946, while working for Kodak's photo-finishing plant in New Jersey. Not long after, she became the first woman to join Magnum Photos agency, during which time she made her name shooting fashion. Her images of Marilyn Monroe, taken on the set of The Misfits (1961) are among her most memorable and encapsulate the 'curiosity' that she claims as her driving force throughout her career.

In England, I d become too well-known as a Tatler photographer. It was wonderful to be invisible again.

At the end of the 1980s, society photographer Dafydd Jones began a new life in New York. He had been hired byVanity Fair to attend the most talked-about parties in the city and soon found himself descending into a world of human tableaux, ladies who lunch, princesses in powder rooms and dachshunds scrapping over canapés. Camera at the ready, Jones quickly filled the society pages of the illustrious magazine, snapping the likes of Leona Helmsley, Donald Trump, Jeffrey Epstein, Ghislaine Maxwell and Imelda Marcos as they celebrated, mourned and unravelled in the bright lights. During the day, he captured the city streets and the ordinary citizens grounded in the real world. In these pages, the author of England: The Last Hurrah reveals the story of New York, the highs and the lows, as the 90s unfolded in front of his expert lens.

Sensitive, evocative photographs of wild breeds of horses roaming free in the British countryside

A fascinating insight into an alternative way of looking at the world

Foreword from wildlife presenter Chris Packham

Revealing descriptions of each photograph in Bowen's own words

From the photographer behind Wild World: Nature Through an Autistic Eye, ISBN 9781788841238

a fascinating collection of images of wild horses. Amateur Photographer

Photographer and wildlife activist, Alfie Bowen presents his two-year-long project photographing Britain s wild horses through the eyes of someone living with autism spectrum disorder. Wild Horses is all about connection: Bowen s personal connection to the animals he photographs; his connection to photography as an art form; the horses connection to one another; and our collective connection to the land and our planet.

Bowen borrows the words of American landscape photographer Ansel Adams to describe his approach to his work: You don t make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved. For Bowen, photography is an outlet for his emotional energy. It enables him to draw from difficult moments in his life and turn the energy that manifests from his emotions into truly mesmerising images.

Alfie Bowen took up photography in 2014. It became an escape for him, and he credits it with saving his life. He uses his photography to raise awareness of the plight facing many species across the world, and to increase acceptance and understanding of autism. Bowen is proud to be an ambassador for Clinks Care Farm, Big Blue Ocean Cleanup and Young Bird Photographer of the Year. He also works closely with WWF. Alfie Bowen is based in Beccles, Suffolk.

Bending Light The Moods of Color Eric

Meola

9781864709957

A visual journey around the world of one hundred iconic photographs taken by celebrated and multi-award-winning photographer, Eric Meola

An intimate and personal account of Eric Meola's creative process and self expression, including the telling of the stories behind the creation of each photograph

A showcase of the expert use of visual language, informed by writers, painters, musicians, and a desire to create visual metaphor with imagery

The Professional Photographers of America noted that Eric Meola champions photography as a visual language capable of great emotion. He s a photographer with a love affair for color, light, and artistic freedom.

Bending Light: The Moods of Color showcases photographer Eric Meola s use of light and colour throughout his career of editorial, advertising, and personal work. In one hundred iconic photographs, including recent experiments with colour abstracts, and in dozens of stories and anecdotes, he examines his five-decade journey using colour in photography, its symbolism, and how it affects our moods.

Meola s work is informed by writers, painters, musicians, and the desire to create visual metaphors with his imagery whether intimate portraits, unique landscapes, or colour-saturated abstracts, his use of geometry within the frame of the photograph creates a tension that is instantly recognisable.

In awarding him its Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023, the Professional Photographers of America noted that Eric Meola champions photography as a visual language capable of great emotion. He s a photographer with a love affair for colour, light, and artistic freedom.

As Meola says, Light and colour are my subject as much as the subject itself. It s the confluence of colour with light the movement within the colour that s important to me. Although the end image is a still photograph, the story of its creation, the how and why it came to be, is part of every photographer s psyche. Telling the stories behind the photographs is my way to revisit the creative process, both as a means of introspection as well as expression. Photography has always been a way for me to create what I feel, and feel as I create.

Bending Light: The Moods of Color takes us on a visual journey around the world as Meola tells the story behind the creation of each image, giving insight into the thought process behind creating photographs. A photographer from Rangefinder magazine referred to him as one of a handful of colour photographers who are true innovators.

Eric Meola studied photography at the Newhouse School of Journalism at Syracuse University and graduated with a B.A. in English Literature. Meola s photographs are included in the archive of the American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP), the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., the International Center of Photography in New York, the George Eastman Museum, and Die Neue Sammlung (Design Museum) in Munich. His previous books includeLast Places on Earth (Graphis, 2004), Born to Run: The Unseen Photos (Insight Editions, 2006), India: In Word & Image (revised edition; Rizzoli 2013), and Fierce Beauty: Storms of the Great Plains (Images Publishing, 2019). He has received numerous awards, including Advertising Photographer of the Year in 1986 from the American Society of Media Photographers, a Power of the Image George Eastman award in 2014, and, in 2023, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Professional Photographers of America, which noted that Meola has distinguished himself in his career, which spans more than five decades, and has brought passion, service, and a vivid celebration of color to the photographic industry. Eric and his wife, photographer Joanna McCarthy, live in Sagaponack, New York, on the south shore of Long Island.Carol McCusker received an M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History and the History of Photography from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, under Professors Eugenia Parry and Geoff Batchen. Her undergraduate B.A. was from the Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. She was Curator at the Museum of Photographic Arts, San Diego, and is presently the Cofrin Endowed Curator of Photography for the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida, Gainesville. McCusker has curated over 65 exhibitions and won several awards, among them the Center for Creative Photography Ansel Adams Research Fellowship, Tucson; two Andy Warhol Foundation Awards; and two National Endowment for the Arts Awards. She writes regularly about photography and reviews portfolios internationally. To make it in Hollywood, it takes more than beauty, brains, and talent it takes moxie. This was especially true for women in the heyday of the studio system, a period from the 1920s to the 1950s when a small number of companies dominated the production and distribution of films in America. It was an industry controlled by male studio executives, in which directors and producers called the shots and contract players had little say in which roles they would play. Still, a trailblazing group of actresses forged successful careers out of sheer conviction, perseverance, and professional know-how. These spirited women captivated audiences, shaped the film industry, and remain enduring icons of classic cinema.

This gorgeous volume profiles some 14 leading ladies who had moxie to spare. It is illustrated with more than 200 film stills, publicity photos, and lobby cards from the collection of Ira M. A new edition of a classic, highly sought-after photo book beautifully printed in tritone

Portraits of the residents of the Chelsea Hotel, New York s legendary bohemian enclave, at its high point in the late 1970s and early 1980s

Includes figures both celebrated (from Warhol superstars to Pulitzer Prize winners) and obscure (from strippers to typists), photographed in their idiosyncratically decorated rooms

Introduction by legendary newspaperman Pete Hamill, and texts by famous Chelsea residents like Arthur C. Clarke and William S. Burroughs

Claudio Edinger is recognised as one of Brazil s preeminent photographers

The classic photo book portraying the denizens of the Chelsea Hotel in all their eccentric, bohemian glory back in print in a revised and expanded edition.

When the young Brazilian photographer Claudio Edinger moved into the Chelsea Hotel in the late 1970s, on the recommendation of a friend, he was just looking for a place to live. He had little idea that this twelve-story Victorian Gothic pile at 222 West 23rd Street had been, for almost a century, one of Manhattan s chief bohemian enclaves, where authors, writers, and musicians lived, played, and sometimes even worked. But Edinger was quickly fascinated by his new surroundings, and turned his lens on hotel residents both celebrated like Warhol superstar Viva, stylist and nightlife impresario Susanne Bartsch, and composer Virgil Thomson and obscure, from Dan the mime to Corey the porn starlet. Together, these portraits taken in their subjects memorably decorated living quarters form an invaluable record of the Chelsea Hotel community at one of the peaks of its flourishing, under legendary owner-manager Stanley Bard.

Chelsea Hotel met with immediate acclaim on its original publication in 1983; Edinger s absorbing black-and-white photographs were wonderfully complemented by an introduction from Pete Hamill, dean of New York newsmen, and contributions from such legendary hotel residents as William Burroughs and Arthur C. Clarke. Now this highly collectible and sought-after book is back in print for the first time in decades, with additional, previously unseen photos from Edinger s archives and intriguing where-are-they-now updates. The revised and expanded Chelsea Hotel will be a must-have for anyone who loves the creative side of New York.

Claudio Edinger (b. 1952) is one of Brazil's preeminent photographers. He has published more than 20 books, and his work has been collected and exhibited by numerous important institutions worldwide. Edinger has also received many awards for his photography, including, for Chelsea Hotel, the Leica Medal of Excellence.

Pete Hamill (1935-2020) was a legendary reporter and columnist for the New York Post, the New York Daily News, and other publications.

A sensational photographic exploration of the world of ice and snow, from oceans to ice sheets, glaciers and ice caves, and the stunning landscapes of the world s major mountain ranges

Beautiful photography through which documents extraordinary changes across several decades

On-topic: presents how global shifts in temperature are affecting snow and ice, melting glaciers, and how it affects the communities who live in those areas

Authors are experts in their field and have been studying glaciers for over 50 years

Gives a positive message as it s not only a reminder of what we stand to lose, but gives readers the courage to tackle the global climate emergency

This book is a celebration of the disappearing world of ice and snow, or what scientists know as The Cryosphere. Although frozen water represents a significant component of Planet Earth, it is rapidly declining, both in area and volume in response to global warming. The next few generations of humanity will see unprecedented change in ice and snow cover, so now is the time to place on record the magical beauty of such areas.

The two authors have each studied glaciers for half a century, both as researchers and educators. We have had the opportunity to work in both polar regions, as well as several of the world s major mountain ranges. They examine ice and snow on all scales, from the mighty glaciers and ice sheets that still cover ten per cent of Earth s land surface to frozen puddles and fluffy snow. We illustrate how a myriad of snowflakes are transformed into glacier ice, which then flows under the influence of gravity, and finally disappears through melting. They illustrate how glaciers have eroded Earth s surface to produce some of our most stunning landscapes, and the importance of deposition of debris to the provision of rich soils. They explore ice in the ocean, on lakes and in rivers, and the illustrate the delicate beauty of frost and snow. Finally, they show some of the ways in which plants, animals and humans interact with the Cryosphere.

Our Frozen Planet serves as a reminder of what we are losing, but also gives us the courage to tackle the global climate emergency.

Michael Hambrey is Emeritus Professor of Glaciology and former Director of the Centre for Glaciology in the Department of Geography & Earth Sciences at Aberystwyth University, Wales, UK. He was also founding director of the Climate Change Consortium of Wales. His research interests include glacial geology and structural glaciology. He has published nearly 200 scientific papers and several books, including university-level textbooks Glacial Environments (1994) and, with Jürg Alean, Colour Atlas of Glacial Phenomena (2017). In addition Michael has co-written popular science books Glaciers (2nd edn, 2004) and Gletscher der Welt (2013) with Jürg Alean, and Islands of the Arctic (2002) and The Continent of Antarctica (2018) with Julian Dowdeswell. Jürg Alean was formerly a teacher of geography at the Kantonsschule Zürcher Unterland in Bülach, Switzerland. He has undertaken extensive fieldwork in the Swiss Alps, the Canadian Arctic, Alaska and South America. His research has led to various scientific papers, in particular concerning dangerous glaciers and ice avalanches. He has also published many popular scientific articles and several books, for example, Gletscher der Alpen (2010) and Gletscher der Welt (2013), as well as those mentioned above with Michael Hambrey.

A fascinating country is presented in an unusual way: melancholic and in black and white, aesthetic beauty of land, people and architecture

A reminiscence of the 2016 Olympics and the 2014 World Cup Olaf Heine is a well-known figure in fashion and portrait photography

In the colorful tapestry of culture and landscape that is Brazil, renowned photographer Olaf Heine found a playground for his imagination and creativity.    About Photography Curves make up the entire Universe, Oscar Niemeyer, Brazil s star architect, once said. Photographer and director Olaf Heine met the legendary architect shortly before his death. Since 2010, the well-known portrait and fashion photographer has been tracing the soul of Brazil and showing its sensual joie de vivre with a great deal of sensitivity for shapes and textures.

In his newly revised photo book Brazil, Heine contrasts the Brazilian landscape and architecture with the curves of the people surfers, dancers and beautiful women. He deliberately dispenses with the otherwise stereotypical colours and provides an unusual black and white view of Brazil.

However, Heine is not only interested in the wealth of curves in the architecture and the bodies, but also in a continuation in life: Everything is flexible and in constant flux. From the intensity of longing to the lightness of forms, Olaf Heine shows us a fascinating country in all its diversity, beauty and melancholy.

In his works, Heine depicts the place of longing that the first generation of Brazilian modernists created in architecture, literature and music in the mid-20th century as an aesthetic expression of a social, political and urban society that was undergoing positive change. A wishful thinking and supposed utopia that many people look back on with longing, especially in the current context.

The coffee table book Brazil is the epitome of Brazilian saudade, the longing and wanderlust for the tropical beauty of nature, the lively cities and unique people. For all Brazil fans, this illustrated book is a wonderful gift to immerse themselves in the country and its optimistic way of life again and again, free of clichés.

With texts by Oscar Niemeyer, Ruy Castro, Marcelo Camelo and Matthias Harder.

Text in English, German, French and Portuguese.

Olaf Heine is internationally known for his enigmatic and richly detailed portraits of musicians, actors, writers, visual artists and athletes, as well as impressive architectural and landscape photography. Olaf Heine also established himself as a director for award-winning music videos, short films and commercials. His aesthetic has decisively shaped the visual language of countless bands, including Die Ärzte and Rammstein, as part of their many years of collaboration.

Miami: a special city and its hustle and bustle are presented in modern and humorous photography

Colourful and a little shrill, but never boring - the pictures of the art metropolis are full of stories

Whether Ocean Drive, Miami Beach or Art Miami, after New York, Miami is the most internationally visited metropolis in the USA

Miami, a city truly kissed by the sun! Born as an artist s haven by the sea, the Sunshine City has evolved into a conglomerate of diverse cultures. It s the third-richest city in the USA, boasting one of the three largest skylines in North America. Here, South Americans meet Eastern Europeans, artists mingle with athletes, and models cross paths with pop stars. Tony Kelly captures this vibrant mix that makes the city truly special in his aptly named photo book, Miami

Kelly s photographs tell a tale of glamour, sun, and vibrant joie de vivre. Through a colourful visual language, he presents unfiltered impressions of the sun-soaked metropolis of Florida. Beauty, consumerism, and luxury practically leap from the pages, sparking an immediate desire in the viewer to hop on a plane and visit the Magic City.

However, Miami is not just a coffee table book filled with captivating photographs. In his image selection, Kelly injects humour. Often, he crafts ironic scenes and doesn t shy away from playfully challenging stereotypes about Vice City. Between awe and longing, Kelly s entertaining photo book elicits a mischievous smile from the viewer as they flip through its pages.

For those yearning to inhale the atmosphere of Miami, steeped in beauty and high society, Kelly s photographs provide the perfect blueprint.

Tony Kelly, a native of Ireland, now lives in LA. His photos appear as if highly polished, are colour-intensive and sexy, with all the more irony and potential for exposing stereotypes, subversives and taboos revealed beneath the supposedly smooth surface. The photographer started his career as a photojournalist and is now a sought-after and award-winning advertising photographer of major brands such as Louis Vuitton, BMW and MAC Cosmetics.
