Geoffrey Munn, OBE, MVO, FSA, FLS, is best known for his work as a jewellery expert on the BBC Antiques Roadshow. He eventually became the managing director of the firm, which is the official jeweller to HM The Queen and HRH The Prince of Wales.

British Furniture 1820 to 1920: The Luxury Market, written by celebrated furniture historian Christopher Payne and including over 1,000 superb photographs, is a landmark publication and the first book to comprehensively assess British furniture design from the early origins of the socalled Victorian era through the myriad of influences in vogue up to the 1920s. It goes further than any book has attempted before, creating a continuum to underline the importance of the late Recency style favoured by George IV, moving through to the first two decades of the twentieth century, with a host of ever-changing styles and fashions. Payne studies the influence of the exhibition era, trade catalogues, retailers and subcontractors, and sheds light on the often-unidentified makers of reproduction furniture that later became an important part of the market. He also illustrates the importance of the revival styles, a fundamental part of the furniture trade that has often previously been ignored and shines the light on makers and suppliers of the popular Rococo Revival, Queen Anne and Chippendale styles.

Some of the makers names are familiar to furniture collectors, such as Collinson & Lock, Edwards & Roberts, Gillow, Holland, Maples and Morris & Co., but many are less so and their work is explained and presented here for the first time.

Christopher Payne is an independent furniture historian, author and broadcaster. Formerly a director of Sotheby s and with regular appearances on the BBC s Antiques Roadshow, he has advised private clients around the world. In 2003 he published his ground-breaking study, François Linke, 1855 1946: The Belle Epoque of French Furniture, and remains curator of the extensive Linke archives. His books include works on European and French nineteenth-century furniture which have been translated into several languages, including French, Spanish, Hungarian and Chinese. He is a visiting professor at the Shanghai Institute of Visual Art (SIVA). His most recent book, Paris Furniture: The Luxury Market of the 19th Century, was published in French and English in 2018.

From political leaders to celebrities, photographic portraits exert considerable influence over our reaction to public figures. As the first academic publication focused on the Taikang photography collection, this book explores both the mechanics of portraiture and its psychological effects.

Taikang Space is one of the most important non-profit art institutions in China. Based in Beijing, they focus on contemporary art and photography. The Chinese Portrait: 1860 to the Present is based on the framework of the eponymous exhibition, which ran at Taikang Space from March 2017. This book introduces the curator and researchers involved with the exhibition, as well as researchers such as Shi Zhimin, Jin Yongquan, Liu Jianping, Liu Zhangbolong, who deliver their own unique angles on the topic of portrait photography. The Chinese Portrait: 1860 to the Present also features the curator s interviews with Qia Sijie, Chen Shilin and Zhang Zuo respectively the personal photographer, standard portrait re-toucher and darkroom technician of Chairman Mao.

Tang Xin is the Head of Art Collection at Taikang Insurance Group and the Director of Taikang Space. She graduated from Tianjin Technology University in 1990 and has been an active curator in Beijing since 1997, curating a series of contemporary art exhibitions locally while establishing an artistic exchange with Europe. In 2003, she joined Taikang Life Insurance Ltd, and founded and served as Director of Taikang Space until the present. Xin has also developed a unique systematic research that links socialist Red Revolutionary-period and contemporary art. Her contribution to the history of photography, feminist art, and the discovery of young artists is significant.

After winning a series of awards and being featured in several exhibitions, the lure of film pulled him away from photographs. The museum is housed in an historic building that recalls two individuals, Henriëtte van den Bergh (1838-1920) and Fritz Mayer van den Bergh (1858-1901). Following Fritz s early and unexpected death on 4 May 1901, it was his mother, Henriëtte van den Bergh, who had the museum built to house his art collection. By doing so, she preserved this exceptional collection and at the same time succeeded in keeping alive a memorial to her son. The museum opened its doors in 1904.

This book offers an insight into the history of the museum and its founders. It is based on in-depth research carried out in the archive of Museum Mayer van den Bergh, which among other things contains the rich correspondence between Fritz and Henriëtte as well as an extensive photo collection. Over four chapters, the book explores the personalities behind the collection, their social background and networks, their interests and their modus operandi. More than anything else, this is the story of Henriëtte van den Bergh, the founder of the museum, who died 100 years ago. The setting is Antwerp in the 17th century. At that time, the city was the Jesuit Order s headquarters in the Netherlands and a bastion against the Calvinism in the Northern Netherlands Republic. The fine arts were flourishing there like never before. Painters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck produced works for the Jesuits and participated in the Catholic community life organised by the order, with large groups of fellow believers. This publication takes a close look at the Baroque Saint Ignatius Church, now the Saint Charles Borromeo Church on Hendrik Conscienceplein, for which Rubens created magnificent ceiling paintings. The authors also show how more modest forms of art, such as religious folk prints, illustrated lives of the saints, schoolbooks, emblemata books and prayer books, were used to kindle the enthusiasm of as many believers as possible, both in their own country and in distant overseas territories.

Bieke Depoorter received a master s degree in photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent in 2009. Three years later, at 25 years old, she was made a nominee of the photo cooperative Magnum Photos, where she was named a full member in 2016. Depoorter has won several awards and honours, including the Magnum Expression Award, The Larry Sultan award and the Prix Levallois. Last year, she got nominated for the Deutsche Börse Foundation Photography Prize with her solo Exhibition 'A Chance Encounter' At C/O Berlin. She has published five books: A. , Ou Menya, I am About to Call it a Day, As it May Be, and Sète#15. She worked together with Aperture, Editions Xavier Barral, Edition Patrick Frey, Lannoo, Hannibal, and Le bec en l air to publish these books. In 2020, Depoorter started her own publishing platform Des Palais , together with Tom Callemin. The relationships Depoorter establishes with the subjects of her photographs lie at the foundation of her artistic practice. Accidental encounters are the starting point, and how these interactions naturally develop dictates the suite. Around 1505 Goossen Van der Weyden, Rogier s grandson, painted a monumental altarpiece depicting the various phases of Saint Dymphna s insane life.

This Irish princess, who fled her incestuous father in the sixth century, was beheaded in the Kempen village of Geel. On account of her tragic end and uncompromising chastity, the princess was venerated from that moment on as the patron saint of the mentally ill. From the late Middle Ages, pilgrims flocked to Geel in large numbers to catch a glimpse of Saint Dymphna. They paid homage to the local celebrity in the hope that she would alleviate their mental problems. To this day, Geel is known for its unique treatment of the mentally ill, who are cared for at home by locals.

Goossen Van der Weyden s altarpiece came into being at the height of Dymphna s popularity. The masterpiece was intended for the church of Tongerlo Abbey. Today this work is characterised by a remarkable iconography and an eventful history: a panel was lost and the triptych was even sawn into pieces. It ultimately came into the hands of a team of specialists from Belgium and abroad who subjected the altarpiece to a meticulous conservation over a period of three years, a colossal undertaking during which new techniques were used. This gave the conservators unprecedented insight into the mind, and workshop, of an early 16th century painter.

This richly illustrated book is the result of years of research and contains essays by Till-Holger Borchert (Musea Brugge), Stephan Kemperdick (Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen, Berlin), Katharina Van Cauteren (The Phoebus Foundation, Antwerp), Lucinda Timmermans (Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam), Patrick Allegaert (Dr. Guislain Museum, Ghent) and many others.

Sven Van Dorst (1990) obtained a master's degree in conservation and restoration at the Royal Academy/University of Antwerp. In 2016 he founded the conservation studio of The Phoebus Foundation. Between 2017 and 2020, Sven led the research and conservation project around the panels of Goossen Van der Weyden's Dymphna altarpiece.

Stephan Kemperdick is curator of Early-Dutch and Early-German painting at the Gemäldegalerie, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Till-Holger Borchert is scientific director of the Museum association of Bruges.

From the 1970s to the 1990s, Hans van Manen was not only one of the world s leading choreographers, but also an internationally acclaimed photographer. It was during this period that the then very young photographer Erwin Olaf met the famed artist, who immediately took him under his wing and introduced him to the world of the visual arts and studio photography.

This book celebrates their 40 years of friendship, with a photo series in which Van Manen directs moments from his choreographic career, recorded with the utmost precision by Erwin Olaf.

He served as the official portrait artist for the Dutch royal family in 2017, and designed the national side of the euro coins for King Willem-Alexander in 2013. He has been awarded the Netherlands prestigious Johannes Vermeer Award, as well as Photographer of the Year at the International Color Awards, and Kunstbeeld magazine s Dutch Artist of the Year. Fred Bervoets (b. 1942) is a legend in the Belgian art world and revered by the younger generation of artists. For years he has made both expansive, teeming artworks and extremely traditional prints, the latter of which has seen him develop his own unique technique. Although his spontaneous and gestural style seems to accord with Expressionism, Fauvism or Cobra art, Bervoets is above all an idiosyncratic artist who uncompromisingly treads his own path and gives free reign to his imagination.

A simple anecdote from a friend in a café might provide the catalyst for a work in which the story assumes new proportions and adopts its own twists. His personal life also engenders self-portraits or other types of artworks, all crowned with an essential degree of self-mockery and irony. Bervoets allows everyday events to expand into miniature universes governed by their own rules and laws. The horror vacui of his large paintings conceals countless details, all of which contribute to the narrative.

Bervoets works might seem playful but they are tinged with melancholy. His caricatural figures are compelled to stand their ground in a denuded world. They achieve this by completely surrendering, with the necessary humour, to the inevitability of life. In recent years, Bervoets has increasingly presented himself as a peintre-graveur. This means he does not use the etching technique as a method of reproduction but as a means of expression.

Each and every one of his chaotic and colourful works testifies to his pictorial passions, consummate skill and unbridled energy. This book presents the evocative work produced by Fred Bervoets between 2015 and 2019, including his most recent Night Drawings series, the masterful embodiment of the nocturnal reveries and memories that persistently haunt his mind.

In 1984 Paul Huvenne gained his Art History PhD at Ghent University through his study of the sixteenth-century Bruges-based painter and cartographer Pieter Pourbus. Since 1973 he has been involved as a researcher at Antwerp's Centrum Rubenianum, which is concerned with the study of Rubens. In 1984 he became the curator in charge of the Rubens House. From 1997 to 2014 he was general director of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, which he comprehensively revitalised, re-establishing its international reputation. He has taught at the University of Antwerp, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and KU Leuven. He organises high-profile exhibitions and has a special interest in the role of the visual arts in contemporary society.

Rinus Van de Velde (b. 1983) is one of the most talked-about contemporary artists. In The Villagers the viewer enters Van de Velde s world. An important role is played by the 17 life-size cardboard sets on which he worked for two years. Narrative evolved into a more abstract form of expression in La Ruta Natural. For this second film, which follows a surreal road trip, Van de Velde had a mask made resembling his face. His most recent film, A Life in a Day, is introspective and shows the inner workings of the artist. The result is an intimate and pure voyage of discovery in which Van de Velde analyses himself from a distance. Through impersonations, constructed lies, and appropriations, he comes closer to uncovering the truth about his own identity and artistry.

The Belgian photographer Servaas Van Belle (b.1978) grew up in Knokke-Heist and studied 3D multimedia at the KASK in Ghent. At that time photography only played a supporting role, but what was already noticeable was the absence of people in his work. During his student years he went as an Erasmus student to Athens to follow a course in sculpture. Afterwards he completed an academic teacher training course. Soon he left for Senegal in West Africa. What was meant to be a trip of a few months turned into a stay of several years. Among other things, he developed a primary school there.

After seven years in Dakar, he returned to Belgium in 2009, where he began to photograph more intensively and specialised in interior photography. Gradually his work took on a recognisable character. Van Belle has a great interest in architecture and constructions that at first sight seem banal such as utility buildings, billboards, hunting and observation towers. Transience and the influence of time are key concepts here. His photo series have already been published in De Standaard and de Volkskrant

Recounts the astonishing story of this lost Titian masterpiece, now on view in Venice for the first time since its restoration

This book recounts the fascinating history of Titian s unfinished portrait, A Lady and her Daughter (possibly his mistress Milia and their daughter), which dates from the early 1550s. After Titian s death in 1576, it was repainted in his studio with a more saleable image of Tobias and the Angel. Often presented as Titian s work but in a style which made the attribution suspect, the painting has had a succession of owners. It belonged to Tsar Nicholas I for a short time, and ultimately to the art dealer René Gimpel, who hid it with other artwork in a warehouse in London during World War II, where it miraculously survived the Blitz. It was not until the mid-20th century that an x-ray examination uncovered the beautiful painting underneath, an undisputed work by the great master himself. The painstaking restoration process, begun in 1983, took 20 years. Notable art historians and conservators have contributed essays that offer an in-depth examination of this exceptional and mysterious painting.

Larry Keith is the Head of the Conservation Department, and has managerial responsibility for Art Handling, Framing and Collection Registrars. His work is the conservation, restoration and technical study of Old Master paintings, working in collaboration with colleagues from the Gallery's Scientific and Curatorial Departments. He received a post-graduate diploma in the conservation of easel paintings from the Hamilton Kerr Institute, Cambridge, following a BA in Art History from Oberlin College. He joined the National Gallery in 1991 after working with Hebert Lank in London and John Brealey at the Metropolitan Museum. Werner Mantz (1901-1983) was a prominent architectural and industrial photographer who began his career in the 1920s. Werner Pawlok, born in Stuttgart in 1953, founded the first photo gallery in southern Germany in 1980. Photographer Federico Povoleri is a native Venetian and knows his hometown like almost no one else. Federico Povoleri was born in Venice in 1963. The legendary journalist, comics copywriter, and writer Alberto Ongaro took him under his wing and trained him in the art of literary comics. As such, Povoleri worked with artists such as Attilio Micheluzzi and Ivo Pavone, publishing with Universo and Rizzoli, among others. He also collaborated with Walt Disney Italia for several years. Povoleri studied documentary filmmaking and directs videos of opera and symphony concerts at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. A multiple award-winning photographer, Povoleri teaches screenwriting and film technology at the Artistic High School of Venice.
