It assesses all of your English skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking. ACC is proud to be an official testing centre for IELTS. IELTS is jointly owned by The British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations. IELTS tests are available on up to 48 dates a year. Tests are normally taken on Saturdays, with some sessions on Thursdays. The Listening, Reading and Writing tests are all taken on the same day. The Speaking test can take place up to seven days before or after the other papers; this is determined by the Centre. The following test dates are available at Assiniboine Community College in Brandon. To register for an IELTS test, it is preferred that you complete your online application at least 5 weeks before the test date. Refunds and transfers will only be permitted prior to 5 weeks before the test date. Online registration can be completed at http://ielts.britishcouncil. org/assiniboine. The application deadline with submitted payment and identification is one week prior to the test. The test centre will confirm your IELTS test date and time. EXPANDED PERSPECTIVES:

TESOL TRAINING AT ACC by Surien Fourie (L to R): Michelle Lam and Kristen Perrott

We, [as individuals], come at life with such different values, traditions, and culture, and when we are all thrown together in the classroom, we have the beautiful experience of allowing our perspectives to be challenged, shaped, and expanded in new ways. This is what you can expect in our Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) training at Assiniboine Community College.

We have two experienced English as a Second Language (ESL) teachers teaming up to teach TESOL this summer. Michelle Lam has eleven years of teaching under her belt, and Kristen Perrott has twenty years of teaching experience. Michelle Lam grew up on a strawberry u-pick farm in Manitoba. After graduating from high school, she moved to Regina and studied Intercultural Studies, which included an internship at an orphanage in Thailand. “That was my first experience teaching ESL. They thought that since I could speak English, I could teach it, and I quickly learned that those are two different things,” said Lam.

Michelle Lam finished her degree the following year, and enrolled in a TESOL program shortly afterwards. “I have been teaching ever since in places like Thailand, Calgary, Toronto, Indonesia, Vietnam, and now in Brandon”. Kristen, originally from Toronto, has travelled widely and worked abroad. She has been an ESL teacher for 12 years. She came to ESL education when she was in her early 30s and after spending her 20s teaching art and studying comparative religions, fine arts, and languages at the university level. Her initial interest in ESL was inspired by the idea that she could continue to spend time with and learn from people from other countries and cultures while living in Canada.

“ESL TRAINING ALLOWS OUR PERSPECTIVES TO BE CHALLENGED, SHAPED, AND EXPANDED IN NEW WAYS”

Michelle

“I’ve been working in ESL for over ten years now and it continues to be challenging and rewarding as the demographics and needs of our students continuously shift and change,” Kristen said. She is motivated by the opportunity to work day to day with the immigrant community and continuously learn about the world through them. “But, what motivates me much more these days is the opportunity to create a place of belonging and support to newcomers to Canada,” said Kristen. She knows from personal experience, living and working abroad, that life can be extremely difficult and alienating when you don’t speak the language, and it can be very lonely so far away from your culture. “I like to think that our classrooms provide, not only a place for essential language acquisition, but also a place to belong,” she said. Both Michelle and Kristen are firm believers in education. According to Kristen, “education is about actively engaging with new ideas and information and opening up to new possibilities.” Michelle looks at education as expanding your perceptions and the differences within our society across cultures. “These differences, which often surprise us, are part of what I love so much about teaching across cultures. We come at life with such different values, traditions, and culture, and when we are all thrown together in the classroom, we have the beautiful

12

experience of allowing our perspectives to be challenged, shaped, and expanded in new ways,” she said. The Advance Consulting for Education (ACE) TESOL program has been running since 2009 at the college. Kristen was part of the team that piloted the very first ACE TESOL at ACC. Her favourite part of any course is the people taking the course. “I love to see who’s in the class, get to know them. I appreciate being able to help students explore and understand new concepts and play a role in setting them up for success,” said Perrott.

ACC’S CONTINUING STUDIES • SPRING 2017

Both instructors are advocates of the program, and believe in the value students receive when completing it. According to Michelle, “students are able to see and experience the methods they will eventually employ as ESL teachers while they are learning the course material, which is interactive and involved.” Another benefit is that students have the opportunity to complete a practicum component, which gives practical in-class experience and also allows for TESOL Canada certification upon completion.

front of the group,” said Perrott. “It’s not a sit-down course; students need to feel comfortable giving presentations in front of the class and participating in numerous classroom role-plays.” The impact on community is vast – not just abroad, but local too. “TESOL training allows you to have employable skills in countries all around the globe,” said Lam. According to Kristin, local employers value TESOL training and previous classroom experience when making their hiring decisions. “Brandon has a growing immigrant community and needs continuing ESL support programs for adults and children”. There is a need for more ESL educational assistant roles, as the number of ESL children/youth registering in our local schools continues to rise. “Brandon is also hosting growing numbers of international students at various levels of education and requires trained personnel to work within this emerging demographic,” said Perrott. The TESOL training starts July 4 at the Victoria Avenue East Campus, where you will be given the tools, strategies and knowledge to be successful as an English Language teacher. Call 204.725.8725 to receive information on this certification and others offered by ACC.

“There is a wealth of learning that takes place within the group as a whole,” said Perrott. The course is laid out with a balance of learning configurations allowing students to share their opinions, knowledge and experiences. “In my opinion, ACE TESOL does a really good job of coaching students through the lesson planning process and delivers very solid lesson planning frameworks.” The workload and intensive format is one of the challenges that students face while taking this program.

“It can be a bit daunting but from personal experience, you gain momentum and complete it quickly,” said Lam. “The intensive TESOL course is not for the faint of heart,” said Perrott. It’s a rigorous program that requires a great deal of focus for the duration of the month. This can be especially challenging to students who are caring for families or who are working part-time jobs. “From early on in the course, students will write their own lesson plans and deliver solo lessons in
