Rural Rotating Sites COMMUNITYBASED TRAINING AND

Community-based education is part of Assiniboine’s DNA, and it’s one of the ways we help communities and regions address their specific labour market needs. In fact, we’re a leader in this area. Community-based delivery is when we offer one of our programs in a location where we don’t have a permanent campus, allowing students to live and study where they otherwise may not have the opportunity. Programs are often in the areas of skilled trades, health care, human services, business, and agriculture. Often there is an adult upgrading component, allowing Assiniboine students to complete both their high school education and become a college graduate!

This past academic year, we delivered programs in 49 communities across Manitoba. We see tremendous success in this approach, particularly as it relates to self-determination and prosperity for First Nations, Métis and Inuit communities.

We also host rural rotating sites for our Early Childhood Education, Practical Nursing and Comprehensive Health Care Aide programs in addition to our permanent offerings of the programs at our campuses. In recent years, we’ve delivered our Practical Nursing program in a wide variety of communities across Manitoba, including Virden, Neepawa, Morden, Otterburne, and Arborg.

Apprenticeship

Train for your career as a certified journeyperson. Manitoba has more than 55 designated apprenticeship trades and Assiniboine is proud to partner with Apprenticeship Manitoba to offer many of them. You’ll learn through a combination of on-the-job practical training and in-school technical training.

There are two ways to enter any trade:

1. Complete a pre-employment program (find a full list of programs at Assiniboine on page 32) and then continue on to apprenticeship.

2. Enter directly into apprenticeship.

Pre-employment programs provide you with a well-rounded foundational education in your trade so that you are well-prepared to start your career and register as an apprentice. All pre-employment programs at Assiniboine are also accredited with Manitoba Apprenticeship trades. Whichever way you choose, both ways lead to obtaining your designation as a certified journeyperson.

Training for a certified journeyperson varies from one to five levels, depending on the trade. For each level, you spend about 80% of your time learning from your employer; the other 20% is short-term technical training at college.

Choosing a trade program will take you on a career path that promises to be both rewarding and challenging. So, roll up your sleeves, and let’s get to work.
