In October, the SPLOST funded expansion of the newly-renamed Education & Visitor Center opened to the public at Sandy Creek Nature Center (SCNC). The expansion features five new exhibit areas and completes the Interactive Learning Centers started in 1998. The bulk of the project was paid for by SPLOST taxes, and SCNC, Inc., the non-profit support agency for the nature center, that secured private donations and grants to aid the project.

This energy efficient facility houses new exhibits featuring Georgia woodlands, urban environments, agriculture in Georgia, and a multi-use planetarium. Designed

by Split Rock Studios along with Leisure Services Department staff and members of the user group, the learning centers are full of hands-on experiences for all ages.

Unique connection points scattered throughout the space encourage visitors to “go outside, “learn more, “ and “get involved.”

Use a scanner to discover which products come from Georgia’s fields and forests.

Walk through a larger-than-life soil trench. Learn how to save energy in your home.

See plants growing without soil and experience the sounds and smells of farm, cities, and forests. Take a trip to the stars in the planetarium and see how and why our atmosphere is important to us all. Grab a trail map and take a hike.

Other amenities funded by this project include an outdoor teaching pavilion, expanded animal care and exhibit/program preparation space. Also included is improved parking and connectivity to the Greenway, more efficient heat/air conditioning, lighting, and insulation for the new areas.

More than 50,000 people visit the nature center annually including school children from Athens and the surrounding area. The new exhibits and improvements will enhance their opportunities for education, recreation, and enjoyment of the property and other parks. New experiences and adventures are in store for visitors both local and beyond thanks to Athens-Clarke County’s support and guidance.

“The Christmas Post”

The Holiday Spirits Tour

A two-hour bus tour will visit four Athens Historic House Museums and include live theatrical vignettes by local performers. Tour bus departs from and returns to Lyndon House Arts Center parking lot, with a choice of three departure times.

“Santa’s Enchanted Workshop”

Stanley and his baby sister, Su Su, don’t know whether or not to believe in Santa Claus, so they set out for the North Pole.

Trapped in a blizzard, they wind up at a gas station run by an old man named Nick. Could this be Santa’s Enchanted Workshop? Each performance lasts approximately one hour.

Period Decorative Arts c.1840-1890 and Athens History Museum Display

The Ware-Lyndon House, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, represents a blend of the Greek Revival and Italianate styles. Resplendent interior furnishings showcase period decorative arts of the mid and late 1800’s.

Fishing is permitted along the Greenway, in the Memorial Park Lake, and at Sandy Creek Park’s Lake Chapman.

Memorial Park’s lake holds bream and catfish, and Lake Chapman holds Large-mouth bass, channel catfish, bullhead catfish, crappie, and bream.

All Georgia fishing regulations must be observed. A current Georgia Department of Natural Resources Fishing License is required to fish on Leisure Services property. Sport fishing is permitted only (pole and line).

No baskets, trot lines, or trapping are allowed.

Indoor Soccer

This is a very informal co-ed recreational league designed for players to develop and maintain skills in the off season. Children will practice for 30 minutes and play a 30 minute scrimmage game each week. Registration ends January 2.

Sportstime

Children will learn games, drills and relay races to introduce the player to soccer, football, basketball, golf, kickball, lacrosse and more. Participants will learn basic rules and fundamental skills of each game. Participants

• If a class or program is cancelled due to insufficient enrollment or other reason, ACC Leisure Services will issue a full refund to all registered individuals.

• No refunds will be granted after the start of the program or class. Collected fees of less than $5 will not be refunded (unless the department cancels the program or class).

Scholarships

Any Athens-Clarke County resident under the age of 18 is eligible for consideration for a scholarship. A list of required documents to determine scholarship eligibility is available by calling 706-613-3800 or at www.athensclarkecounty.com/scholarships Scholarships do not cover admission, entrance, field trips, rental fees, or adult programs.

Parents must apply for a scholarship prior to the day of program registration.

All scholarships expire June 30 and must be renewed.

Smoking Policy

Sec. 4-3-2. Smoking Prohibited in Athens-Clarke County Facilities. Smoking shall be prohibited in all enclosed facilities of, including buildings owned, leased, operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County. Smoking shall be prohibited within the boundaries of any park, youth sports complex, or recreation area owned, leased, or operated by the Unified Government of Athens-Clarke County, including any open area within such park, youth sports complex, or recreation area.

• Refund requests must include a Refund Request Form and must be received no less than seven (7) business days prior to the first day of class or program.

• Refunds will be assessed a 25% administrative fee.

• After the seven (7) day deadline, refunds will not be granted without a written medical excuse from a licensed physician.
