Dear Friends, Tapper’s first opened its doors in 1977 and, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary, we are overcome with gratitude when we reflect on all of the celebrations that you’ve allowed us to play a part in. Whether we helped you mark a birthday, professional milestone, engagement, anniversary, bar/bat mitzvah, first communion, graduation, or another event, we feel fortunate that we were able to help you mark the moment with a gift from Tapper’s. Without the dedication of our associates and your support, we could not have come this far. Thank you. We are also fortunate to have welcomed two new additions to the Tapper family this year: We are thrilled to have Mark and Leora’s new son, Shay, in our lives, and to have celebrated the marriage of Steven and Patti’s son, Alex, to Erica. Additionally, it was with great excitement that we recently opened our newly remodeled store at Somerset Collection—complete with an expanded bridal department, a new Rolex shop, and a refreshment bar which we named the Tapper’s Tap. Please stop in to see what’s new and take a few moments to relax during the upcoming holiday shopping season. We would love to see you. Best wishes for peace, love, and lots of joy this holiday season. Howard, Steven, Mark, and the entire Tapper’s Family

RAREFIED REALM of

NATURAL COLOR DIAMONDS

For centuries, natural color diamonds have been regarded as the world’s most sought-after gems, by knowledgable collectors and even royalty. Natural color diamonds have long been treasured for their rarity: coveted by many, but owned by few. These diamonds are truly wonders of the world, as old as the Earth itself, yet never have they been more sought after than they are today; their scarcity is at the heart of their desirability.

14

COLOR

Only one in 10,000 diamonds mined displays enough natural color to be designated a fancy color diamond by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA). Theirs is a discreet luxury: In the rarefied realm of fancy color diamonds, strength of color is more important than the size of the stone. Natural color diamonds can be 10 to 20 times more valuable than their colorless counterparts, and their popularity as an alternative is growing. However, no one acquires a fancy color diamond for its investment value alone. Their allure lies in their mesmerizing beauty, rarity, mystery and unique provenance. Rare natural color diamonds have increased in value exponentially in the last 10 years, often by double digits year over year. According to leading trade organizations, auction houses and expert diamantaires, rare fancy pink and fancy blue diamonds have led the way, growing by well over 300 percent on average and outperforming most other asset classes in the same period. As global financial markets continue to demonstrate volatility and instability, affluent collectors and investors around the world are acquiring natural color diamonds to protect their wealth, and to transfer it from one generation to the next. Meanwhile, as demand rises, the earth’s supply of fancy color diamonds is dwindling: The Cullinan Mine in South Africa is today the only important source of blue diamonds; Australia’s Ellendale Mine, a main source of yellows, has recently ceased production; and Rio Tinto’s Argyle Mine in Western Australia, the source of most pink diamonds, is scheduled to close by 2020.

In diamonds, rarity equals value. With diamonds in the normal range, value is based on the absence of color, because colorless diamonds are the rarest. With fancy color diamonds—the ones outside the normal color range—the rarest and most valuable colors are saturated reds, pinks, blues and greens. In all cases, even very slight color differences can have a big impact on value. Compared to fancy yellows and browns, diamonds with a noticeable hint of any other hue are considerably more rare. Even in light tones and weak saturation, as long as they show color in the face-up position, they qualify as fancy colors. Red, green and blue diamonds with medium to dark tones and moderate saturations are extremely rare.

CLARITY

With fancy color diamonds, color is the dominant value factor. Even diamonds with numerous inclusions that result in a low clarity grade are prized by connoisseurs if they display attractive face-up color. Of course, inclusions that threaten the gem’s durability can lower a fancy color diamond’s value significantly. Fancy color diamonds can exhibit color graining, which is considered an inclusion. CUT

Size and shape are two aspects of cut that can influence diamond color. The larger a diamond is, or the deeper its pavilion, the farther light can travel in it. This can often lead to a richer, more intense color. C A R AT W E I G H T

As with diamonds in the normal D-to-Z color range, large fancy color diamonds are rarer and more valuable than small ones. Some information courtesy of GIA.

TAPPER’S CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF WELCOMING GUESTS LIKE FAMILY

T

Since Howard sold his car and took out a loan to open the first Tapper’s store in Southfield, on Twelve Mile Road, in 1977, Tapper’s is and always has been family owned and operated.

“My father’s dream was always for the family to go into business together,” says Howard Tapper, CEO and owner of Tapper’s, the premier destination for gifts of diamonds, fine jewelry, and Swiss timepieces in the Metro Detroit area.

Now marking our 40th anniversary, Tapper’s has grown to three locations and employs multiple family members beyond Howard, Steven, and Mark: Susan (Howard’s wife), Barbara (Howard and Steven’s sister), Patti (Steven’s wife), Marla (Howard’s daughter) and Leora (Mark’s wife).

You’re family.’ It means everything to us.”

The Tapper’s tradition, rooted in customer service that treats every store visitor like a member of the family, began with Howard’s and Steven’s entrepreneurial spirit as children. They sold ice cream, cotton candy, snow cones, newspapers, and more.

40th anniversary “Once, the paper company was on strike, and I found a way to buy some newspapers and sell them myself out of a wagon,” Howard laughs.

“I WANTED PEOPLE COMING THROUGH THE DOOR TO FEEL NOT ONLY COMFORTABLE, BUT HAPPY THAT THEY COULD BUY A GREAT GIFT WITH CONFIDENCE.”

the growth never stopped. In 1995 Howard and Steven moved the original store to West Bloomfield, and the second Tapper’s shop opened at Twelve Oaks Mall in 2007. Three years later came the third store at Somerset Collection North.

But Howard’s dreams became focused on HOWARD TAPPER jewelry at age 15, when he sold a gold watch while working at E.L. Rice. The store’s monthly rent? $1,000. The roots had taken hold. Just a few months later Howard’s brother, Steven, who now runs the Tapper’s custom design business, joined the company. So did Howard’s sister, Barbara, who assists with business operations. It was then that the family business truly began. Tapper’s grew slowly at first, but steadily — and

PRIMORDIAL BEAUTY

THE JOHN HARDY NAGA COLLECTION

T

he John Hardy woman is a wonder of paradoxes: power and grace, strength and softness. The luxury artisan jewelry brand’s latest designs in the Naga collection embrace these dualities; it’s a season of beautiful and unexpected pieces. The redesigned Naga collection is John Hardy’s first under new creative director Hollie Bonneville Barden, the first woman to hold the role. She traveled to Bali seeking inspiration for a reinterpretation of John Hardy’s legendary icon Naga, which is shrouded in folklore and myth. “[It was] a unique journey of discovering Bali,” Bonneville Barden says. “Through my creative process, I uncovered that, beyond the Naga myth, Balinese folklore depicts the Naga as an embodiment of different natural spirits—the Earth, the ocean, and the sky, representing the elements of natural phenomena and its raw beauty. To me, this concept of duality is universal.” The concept is evident in not only all pieces but in every detail of the Naga collection, which features elemental sculptural aspects, rebirth-inspired tapered circles, and unexpected combinations such as silver paired with black sapphire. The season also features new iterations of John Hardy’s iconic Chain, Dot, and Bamboo collections. Inspired by the raw strength she found in Bali,

20

Bonneville Barden led the design of Naga as a celebration of the power of creation and nature. Each piece is created to take the wearer on a journey— an ethereal experience fueled by the marvel of elemental force. Every detail of the collection can be traced back to that power, giving strength to its wearer: the Naga’s blue sapphire eyes represent the sky and ocean, scroll-like engravings recall waves, and shapes in bracelet links resemble leaves. The stones in particular were chosen for their play of light, explains Bonneville Barden. “I selected the stones not just for their suggestion of power, drama, the fascination of light and color—but the power of creation they represent. I wanted to show nature’s strength through creation.”

BRACELET STACK

The key to creating a beautiful bracelet stack is finding the right balance between variety and cohesion. Mixing bracelets of completely different styles can look chaotic, yet stacking bracelets that are too similar can seem boring. Here are some tips: Choose your metal(s) Before choosing your bracelets, decide whether you want to stick with one metal, like rose gold, or whether you want to mix metals for more visual interest. Choose your accent color(s) Consider the outfit that you’ll be wearing and decide whether you want to complement it by adding color to your stack, or whether you want to stick with neutrals. Choose your bracelets In general, odd numbers look best, so think about building a stack in a group of three, five, or seven bracelets. Stack similar bracelets for a streamlined look, or be adventurous and choose pieces with different textures and edges. If you are mixing metals, alternate the metal colors in the stack. Experiment Once you have a base stack to work with, the opportunities to alter your look are limitless. Make your stack more edgy by replacing one of the pieces with a leather bracelet or one with pyramid studs. Make it more girly by mixing vintage pieces in with more modern ones.

RING STACK

Just like building a bracelet stack, choose your metal(s), accent color(s), and don’t forget to mix textures. For shorter fingers, create a stack of three rings; experiment with adding more to longer fingers. Also, think about telling a story. For example, you might choose rings that feature the birthstones of your children, you and your significant other, or your closest friends.

how to

LAYER NECKLACES Layer just a couple of necklaces or build a look with several or more. The options are endless! Choose your metal(s) When layering necklaces, stick with one metal type for a streamlined look, or mix it up and layer yellow, white, and/or rose gold to add visual interest. Choose your lengths The prettiest necklace groupings feature a mix of clearly defined lengths, starting from the shortest of 14” to the longest at 33”. Choose your shortest necklace first and make sure that the length works well with your neckline. A slim 14-inch or 16inch choker works well with a scoopneck top, blouse, or T-shirt, while a 20-inch necklace works well with a boatneck and other high necklines. When adding your second necklace, consider choosing one with a different chain. If your shortest necklace has a delicate chain, choose a longer one with a beaded chain or bolder links. In terms of length, it’s fine to choose a second necklace that’s only an inch or two longer than your shortest one, but if your outfit has a deep-V neckline, select one that drops down several inches. When choosing your longest piece, pick one with a bit of weight to anchor your look and frame your shorter necklaces. Pendants and long chains with baubles are great options. 24

Make it Personal Personalize your stack by incorporating initials, birthstones, zodiac signs, religious symbols, or engraved pieces. Add Contrast Add a horizontal bar necklace to break up the lines of more vertical necklaces. Introduce Color Add color to a neutral outfit with bright enameled pendants, gemstones, or colored beads.

OVAL HALO

The round halo’s popularity has waned. What’s newly in demand: diamond accents elsewhere, such as on the shank, and the oval halo, an elegant look that elongates and slims the finger. Oval has risen to the top among fancy diamond shapes.

INTERTWINED BANDS

FLOWERS & BOWS

Flowers, vines and leaves seemingly gathered from the garden join bows in bringing the latest bridal gown trends to engagement rings. Floral halos or ribbon-like flourishes make for sophisticated styles that appeal to Boho and classic girls alike.

VINTAGE INSPIRATIONS

Whether twisted or overlapping, this wrapped design focuses attention on the center stone and adds interest to a simpler setting. What better way to signify tying the knot?

COLORED STONES

Vintage has been gaining favor for its glamour and timelessness. Nods to the Victorian and Art Deco periods include delicate engraving and personalized elements.

RING BLING

More than ever, couples want to convey their stories in uniquely personal ways. Today’s abundant engagement ring choices offer an extension of that storytelling.

While colored diamonds in pink, yellow, chocolate and black are all options, colored gemstones are even bigger breakouts. Sapphires, rubies, emeralds, and the dimensional color of alexandrite and opal are being used alone or with diamonds in three-stone settings and halos.

BY LAURIE SCHECHTER

PEAR & MARQUISE SHAPES

These tapered cuts provide a slenderizing effect on the hand and work well in an array of on-trend settings, from vintage to east/west.

STACKING BANDS

MIXED METAL

More evidence of the non-traditional movement and the desire to assert individuality, rose, yellow, white gold and platinum come together in stacking rings or in a single design.

DOUBLE SHANK

Dual bands offer an architectural and fashion-forward look. Plain or covered in diamonds, it’s a bold yet simple statement

This is the ultimate example of customization and personalization. Rising in status for some time now, stacks are fast becoming the new standard, able to be mixed and matched, worn separately, and added to over time.

DIAMOND & DESIGN DETAILING

DELICATE SETTINGS

EAST/ WEST SETTINGS

Perhaps one of the newest looks is the east/west setting, showcasing a horizontal stone orientation rather than vertical. Unique and versatile, accommodating all manner of stone cuts, this setting creates the illusion of a larger stone and stacks well with other rings.

26

Dainty and delicate, simple designs can be as impactful as over-the-top styles. The most popular engagement ring on Pinterest recently was a brilliant round solitaire diamond on a thin, simple band. Traditional and au courant, the design proves sometimes less is truly more.

Unique details kick it up a notch and enhance the center stone. Scrollwork in an ornate setting lends a one-of-kind feel. Elaborate details on the sides of a band add dimensional views. Accent diamonds, in baguettes or unique shapes, ramp up the bling factor.

ROSE GOLD

Uber feminine and romantic, rose gold is probably the trendiest of metals and flatters all skin tones. With more women going for a feminine, fashionable look when walking down the aisle, it’s no surprise pink reigns supreme.

R

oberto Coin has always been drawn to tales from history, finding inspiration in fables and folklore. His new collection, Venetian Princess, is inspired by his own personal history: a striking study in black and white diamonds, arranged in the fleur-de-lis patterns found in the architecture of his hometown of Venice.

ROBERTO COIN TAPS HIS VENICE ROOTS FOR

VENETIAN PRINCESS COLLECTION

Perhaps the most iconic piece from the Venetian Princess Collection is the slim bangle, featuring a chic square shape that flatters all wrists and a hinge design with a snap clasp. The 1.86 carats of black and white diamonds, on trend for 2017, are reminiscent of the lights glittering on the Venetian canals at night. The white diamonds are set in a beautiful fleur-de-lis pattern, which a young Coin saw all over Venice on buildings like the landmark Palazzo Ducale in Piazza San Marco. Set in 18K white gold or rose gold, the sides of the bangle also showcase hand-woven strands of gold that ensure a look of stunning detail when the piece is viewed at any angle. The pieces in the Venetian Princess Collection — which also include a collar, a medium and a wide bangle, hoop and tapered hoop earrings, a wide and a medium ring, and a locket — are crafted through a mix of modern manufacturing techniques. Different alloys are used for the skeleton of the piece, the setting surface, and the clasp. As with all Roberto Coin pieces, the Venetian Princess Collection is signed with a small ruby set in the inside of the piece. Coin, always drawn to legends and history, was struck years ago when reading Egyptian lore about the ruby: It is said that when the stone touches the skin, it brings peace, prosperity, and joy to the wearer. Coin sets a ruby in each piece as a sign of his personal wish of happiness for his clients.

GRAND SEIKO

The King of Watches G

rand Seiko watches have a distinctive look that reflects Japanese artistic tastes. The design is notable for the purity, simplicity and subtlety of its lines. Grand Seiko calls it “functional beauty,” a style that does not interfere with the reading of the time, but enhances it with harmonious case lines and uncluttered, easy-to-read dials. Key to the design are polished surfaces that reflect rays of light. Since ancient times, Japanese people have admired the subtle gradations between light and shadow in nature. With that inspiration, Grand Seiko uses a simple case design composed of a flat plane and curved line that respond to the movement of light. Grand Seiko creates this hard-edged, flat-surfaced case through a process called zaratsu, or blade polishing. Hand-polishing gives the case a mirrorlike smoothness where light and shadow play.

Grand Seiko makes watches with three different kinds of movements: mechanical, quartz, and Spring Drive. Spring Drive is a technical breakthrough invented by Seiko that combines the best of mechanical and quartz technologies. It’s an automatic watch that gives quartz accuracy without using a battery. No other watch company has this technology. It’s

a testament to the watchmaking savvy of a firm that has made mechanical watches since 1895. The ultimate test of a fine watch is how accurately it measures the passage of time. In this regard, Grand Seiko is unsurpassed. A Grand Seiko quartz watch is accurate to +/- 10 seconds per year. Grand Seiko Spring Drive’s accuracy of +/-1 second per day is unprecedented for a watch powered by a mainspring. As for Grand Seiko mechanical watches, each one comes with a certificate indicating that it has passed the Grand Seiko Inspection Standard. Grand Seiko watches are tested in more positions, at more temperatures, for more days (17!) to stricter tolerances than Swiss chronometers are. They must be accurate to -3 to +5 seconds per day (the Swiss standard is -4 to +6). If a mechanical watch doesn’t meet those strict tolerances, it is rejected. The watch designer who first created the Grand Seiko style in the 1960s said he had three goals: “That users will feel that the watches are high performance; to meet the Japanese aesthetic sense; and to design watches that will be judged highly forever.”

BREITLING’S LIMITED-EDITION

NAVITIMER WATCHES CIRCLE THE GLOBE

N

o watch brand is more closely associated with aviation than Breitling—and its newest limitededition timepiece is particularly imbued with aviation adventure, after circumnavigating the globe on a recordbreaking world tour. From March to September 2017, Breitling‘s twin-engine propeller-driven Douglas DC-3 became the oldest plane to fly around the world—while carrying onboard a 500-piece limited edition of its classic Navitimer aviation chronograph. This steel Navitimer 01 (46 mm) features a caseback engraved with the Breitling DC-3 World Tour logo, and each piece is delivered with a certificate signed by DC-3 flight captain Francisco Agullo. Both the DC-3 and the Navitimer have deep roots in history and in Breitling, which manufactured onboard chronographs for airplane cockpits in the early 1930s. This DC-3 made its maiden flight in the United States on March 9, 1940, before it was delivered to American Airlines and later used by both the U.S. Army and various North American companies. Bought back in 2008 by pilot Agullo and a group of friends with Breitling’s support, and then restored, the DC-3 has since taken

30

part in many aeronautical shows as well as numerous Breitling events. Breitling launched the legendary Navitimer watch in 1952, featuring a circular slide rule serving to perform calculations relating to airborne navigation. This model, the Navitimer 01, became the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and is the oldest mechanical chronograph still in production. The legendary aircraft and the iconic timepiece came together for the Breitling DC-3 World Tour, which began in Switzerland on the plane’s 77th birthday. The tour traveled to the Middle East, India, southeast Asia, North America, and Europe, concluding with September’s Breitling Sion Airshow. While on the journey, the DC-3 traveled to several other events and airshows, including trips for special passengers to come aboard for certain stretches of the tour. As with all of the notable launches and events in the company’s storied history, Breitling planned the World Tour to share its passion for aeronautics with a vast audience around the globe.

I FAVOR PEARLS ON SCREEN AND IN MY PRIVATE LIFE. -Grace Kelly 36

MIKIMOTO THE TIMELESS ELEGANCE OF A PEARL, SINCE I893

T

here is perhaps no object more associated with classic elegance than the cultured pearl. Favored by Hollywood and fashion stars alike, pearls are truly iconic: imbued with old-school glamour, yet possessing a timeless and fashion-forward look. The cultured pearl—and the entire industry that exists today—traces back to Mikimoto.

Company founder Kżkichi Mikimoto, who invented the cultured pearl, set out with a simple mission: “My dream is to adorn the necks of all women around the world with pearls.” But before Mikimoto’s founding in 1893, that dream was not so easy to achieve. In his early life, Kżkichi was troubled by the misshapen and underdeveloped pearls being sold in the market. Meanwhile, the greed of the industry had sent pearl-harvesting into overdrive, nearly causing pearls to become extinct— and allowing only the ultra-wealthy to have access to them. Kżkichi was determined to sell only the highest-quality pearls and realize his dream of bringing these gems of the sea to all women. He spent years conducting careful research and experimentation, and in 1896 he received his first patent for a cultured pearl.

Today, at 124 years old, Mikimoto is still a familyowned company with fourth-generation members now in possession. Over the decades, the Mikimoto pearl has been favored by both celebrities and elegance-minded customers seeking the highest quality in the world. That includes perhaps the two stars most synonymous with old-Hollywood glamour. Marilyn Monroe received a 16-inch strand of 39 Mikimoto pearls from Joe DiMaggio in 1954 while the couple was honeymooning in Japan, and she treasured the necklace as it was one of the few pieces of real jewelry she owned. The eternally elegant Grace Kelly also praised pearls around this time, saying: “I favor pearls on screen and in my private life.” Today’s stars, including Sarah Jessica Parker, Angelina Jolie, and Emma Watson, are also drawn to the unrivaled quality and beauty of Mikimoto pearls. Lady Gaga purchased jewelry at Mikimoto’s Ginza store for herself and for family members during a trip to Japan, later telling V Magazine: “In fashion and in life we all deserve more pearls, please. When you are changing the way people think, your life achievements are working toward the greatest accessory of all time: nerve. Remember that you are as timeless as the pearls on your neck.” 37

SPORTY, VINTAGE ELEGANCE

RACES INTO THE SPOTLIGHT WITH IWC’S REVAMPED INGENIEUR WATCH COLLECTION

S

wiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen’s history has long been tied to that of motor sports; both evoke thoughts of elegance, excitement, and expert craftsmanship. IWC’s close association with car racing includes its role as the official engineering partner of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula One team, a relationship that has helped inform IWC’s watch design in recent years. “Racing is all about precision, performance, technology, and engineering—which are the most important aspects at IWC, too. Our core DNA, so to speak, is exactly the same,” says Edouard d’Arbaumont, president of IWC Schaffhausen North America. Those elements have been present in IWC timepieces since the beginning, and the company’s latest collection goes back to its roots. In March, IWC unveiled a completely overhauled line of Ingenieur watches, which originally launched in 1955. The new collection retains the simplicity and elegance of the original Ingenieur, featuring a round face, striking watch hands, and indices with luminescent elements. The updated Ingenieur timepieces are lighter and sleeker, but they retain the vintage character of the first generation.

The new Ingenieur collection includes three automatic models, four IWC-manufactured chronographs and a limited edition with a perpetual calendar. One of those chronographs is the Ingenieur Chronograph Sport, limited to 500 watches, which features a 44-millimeter titanium case, a black dial and a black calfskin strap for sporty elegance. A lightning bolt shape at the 6 o’clock mark signifies the Chronograph Sport’s soft-iron cage, which protects the movement against the negative influence of magnetic fields. IWC chose to unveil this new generation of Ingenieur watches in March at the 75th Goodwood Members’ Meeting, a historic motorsport event in the south of England that featured more than a dozen races with historic cars. “IWC will always go hand-in-hand with racing and with engineering that keeps precision and performance top of mind,” d’Arbaumont insists. “Yet we always move forward with some new material or new application, designing our future in a way that is both genuine and authentic to our history.”

INTRODUCING: TAPPER’S

BRIGHT CRYSTAL DIAMONDS IN OUR SIGNATURE CUT

I

n selecting a diamond, everyone wants one that stuns: a diamond that not only looks large but also sparkles with incredible brilliance. Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamonds are celebrated for being among the most exquisite diamonds in the world. To craft a diamond unlike any other, we begin by sourcing the finest rough. Only the top 1% of rough crystals qualify to become Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamonds, and the difference is clear. Our diamond cutters closely inspect and analyze the quality of the original rough to ensure any crystals that contain haziness or extreme natural inclusions are eliminated from our selection process. Even with the highest quality rough, the way a diamond is cut greatly impacts its beauty and its value. The beauty of a diamond depends more on cut than on any other factor, because it is the cut that creates a diamond’s brilliance, fire, and scintillation. In fact, the cut of a diamond can affect the value by as much as 50%. Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamonds are available in a variety of cuts but our Signature Cut is truly magnificent. It’s crafted with 81 facets and perfect symmetry that combine to maximize light traveling through. Our Signature Cut diamond appears larger, more

brilliant, and is loaded with sparkle that can be seen across the room. While traditional diamonds contain only 58 facets, Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamonds in our Signature Cut contain 81 facets for a stunning look worthy of the Tapper’s name. Other branded diamonds may contain more facets, but the world’s eminent gemologists agree there is a point at which too many facets can create a look that is fuzzy and indistinct. The Signature Cut makes Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamonds appear larger—which has a huge impact on the beauty and therefore the ultimate value of the piece. The 81 facets create the appearance of a star at the base of the diamond that is clearly visible to the naked eye, and the inside of the ring is inscribed with the word “foreverafter” to signify everlasting love. And at Tapper’s, we are as dedicated to value as we are to quality. As Michigan’s largest direct diamond importer we don’t pay middlemen, which allows us to guarantee we will beat or meet competitors’ published prices. Tapper’s Bright Crystal Diamonds with our Signature Cut are available exclusively at our three Metro-Detroit locations.

3 UNIQUE ENGAGEMENT RING LOOKS

FOR THE MODERN BRIDE

S

ince 1945, Martin Flyer has prided itself on educating new and experienced jewelry buyers alike, to help them find the perfect piece. That expert guidance is especially welcome when buying the all-important engagement ring—particularly given that modern brides want pieces as unique as they are.

“Today’s brides don’t want something that everyone else has,” confirms Joshua Kaufman, CEO of Martin Flyer Jewelry. “They look at their friends’ rings and want to know: What else is out there?” The answer: There’s a lot! Here, Kaufman offers up three engagement ring styles for the uniquely modern bride.

Oval center stone with a halo, in a rose gold cutdown micropavé setting Kaufman credits this style’s popularity with “off-the-charts attention on social media that is translating into purchases.” Ovals are enjoying a resurgence, and for good reason: The shape gives the stone a larger appearance and makes the wearer’s fingers look more slender. The halo adds to the center diamond’s larger look, while “rose gold is feminine, fresh, and looks great on any skin tone,” Kaufman explains.

Split- or twisted-shank cutdown micropavé setting

Classic three-stone setting “The three-stone ring was big 15 years ago, so for today’s brides it’s new and different—you don’t see it every day,” Kaufman says. “It’s classic, timeless, and allows the center stone to stand out yet be complemented.” Fancy shapes like pear and baguette are excellent options for side stones, injecting an even more unique element into this time-honored look.

“This is a similar look to the micropavé engagement ring setting that’s so popular right now, but it’s a different take,” Kaufman says. “Split shanks can be delicate or can have larger diamonds, and they expose a bit of skin in a surprising way that makes the diamond look as if it’s floating.” A split-shank setting is the perfect choice for a large diamond, as it provides stability along with style.

CASIO G-SHOCK MR-G HANDCRAFTED TIMEPIECE

COMBINES JAPANESE ARTISTRY WITH MODERN TECHNOLOGY

T

raditional Japanese crafting techniques and modern technology may seem at odds—but a new entry in the Casio G-Shock watch line marries these elements in a limited-distribution timepiece that is both beautiful and strong. The MRGG2000HB-1A is a handcrafted watch that demonstrates the best in both Japanese craftsmanship and technological innovation. This MR-G is Casio G-Shock’s latest collaboration with third-generation master metal craftsman Bihou Asano III, who individually hammered each bezel using the Tsuiki Hammer Tone method: a traditional Japanese technique that creates unique patterns and distinctive details on the piece. The watch launched in November to a limited number of fine retailers. On the technology side, this MR-G model offers three-way time sync capabilities and features Bluetooth connectivity, which allows the wearer to easily set current location, world time and other watch functions directly from a smartphone via a unique app. The watch also

62

features G-Shock’s GPS Atomic solar hybrid technology, which accurately measures time and location from anywhere on earth. This combination of master artistry and advanced technology is designed to be not only the embodiment of luxury but also of strength, as G-Shock watches undergo rigorous tests of shock and water resistance at Casio’s premium Japanese production facilities. The MRGG2000HB-1A features a 49.8mm case and a band made of solid titanium. This unique metal undergoes a special deep-hardening treatment that renders it five times harder than regular titanium. The diamond-like carbon coating on the band and case, as well as a sapphire glass crystal, provide superior scratch resistance. The watch also features tough solar technology that ensures seamless, stable operation even when using power-intensive functions. The new model also features an LED super illuminator light, daily alarm, 1-second stopwatch, 24-hour countdown timer, and automatic dateupdate capabilities, fusing the high quality of the MRGG2000HB-1A materials with high functionality.

designers CHARLES KRYPELL

CLASSICS REDEFINED with a Back-to-Basics Mindset

T

he Charles Krypell Jewelry Company has established its reputation for luxury, quality, exclusivity, and dedication to expertly crafted pieces that customers will want to wear for a lifetime. This journey began with Krypell himself, and his first collection for the mainstream market released in 1976. Throughout a creative career spanning more than four decades, Charles Krypell’s artistic impulses have not been limited to a single medium or method. Krypell is a true designer dedicated to craftsmanship, retaining his foundational approach in a manner rarely seen today as technology has changed the jewelry industry. Krypell can still be found scribbling designs on napkins, and he stays involved in all parts of the process, from the creation of the first molds to the setting of every stone.

A MULTIFACETED, ALWAYS-EVOLVING WOMAN SHOULD BE ADORNED WITH JEWELRY TO MATCH.

The company prides itself on this unique level of involvement, eschewing any hands-off, institutionalized processes that diminish the craftsman spirit. Charles Krypell also continues to thrive in part because the brand is dedicated to jewelry designs that appeal to a demographic across the board in terms of age and spending power. The guiding philosophy: A multifaceted, always-evolving woman should be adorned with jewelry to match. The latest collection of cutting-edge designs is Classics Redefined, inspired by the designer’s debut Krypell Collection, which was released in the late 1970s and propelled the brand to world recognition. While Krypell returned to the designs of decades ago to use as his muses, he is still constantly evolving; Classics Redefined features truly of-the-moment touches. These include fresh, modern setting techniques, dimensional designs, use of incredibly rare stones (Charles Krypell is one of the exclusive designers utilizing Argyle Pink Diamonds), and the introduction of new metals such as 18K rose gold. Krypell’s designs effortlessly adapt to customers’ ever-changing lifestyles, as his newest collections focus on paying homage to the woman of the modern world. Each piece is made to retain its beauty while meeting the demands of a lifetime of wear, which Krypell considers the mark of true craftsmanship. The ultimate goal, he says, is that his collectors “allow my jewelry to blend into their lifestyle and become part of their daily routine.” 64
