Welcome Welcome to the first issue of the Accent Lifestyle Magazine! 2016 has already been an outstanding and extremely busy year for us here at Accent Clothing.

We started the year running a competition to find the cutest baby in Leeds and the turn out from this was exceptional. In total we had over a thousand entries and I would like to thank each and every one of you who entered. It was a hard competition to judge as every single baby was cute and I urge you to stay tuned as we are planning to do something similar to this in the near future.

We then hosted our first ever instore Kids Junior Fashion Show to showcase this season’s Junior collection. It was a fun-filled afternoon with lots of fun activities for all the family and again we were delighted at how many of you attended.

Another highlight of the year so far has been the #AccentThrowback competition, it has been absolutely amazing to see all of your photos and has brought so many memories flooding back from when we first started out in 1984.

Most recently, we have been involved with the 10th

Live at Leeds festival. We had a prize giveaway of two free tickets to the event, held a meet and greet with a number of bands and interviewed some of them too.

Overall it was a great day out and a fantastic event.

Towards the end of 2015 we opened the doors to our second store in Bradford. The new shop is located in Westfield in The Broadway Bradford and we are really excited to welcome new members to the Accent family.

We are always looking on how to improve and grow as a company and one of the main things we are always looking at doing is introducing exciting new brands, such as Project X Paris, Paul & Shark, Aigle and Woden - to name but a few.

While all this was going on we were working hard at HQ planning, coordinating and shooting all the photography for the first issue of our Accent Lifestyle Magazine! The whole team have worked so hard on this and I am proud to present this publication to you. It’s a magnificent piece, which showcases our Spring Summer collection including the Men’s, Women’s and Junior departments. I hope you enjoy it.

Where it all began...

A

ccent Clothing was established in 1984 by Martin Schneider and is now celebrating its 32nd Anniversary. Accent Clothing stocks both key and innovative designer brands such as Replay, Belstaff, Matchless, Canada Goose, Grenson and Armani as well as supporting local independent designers such as Kevan Jon, Rebecca Rhoades, Humble Kind Clothing

and Tomoto. Accent prides itself in being able to provide their customers exclusive and rare designer clothes to choose from.

Martin Schneider worked with his father and uncle in a family run aerial photography business in Germany. Yet after a couple of years Martin decided to return to the UK. Once back in the country, Martin and his friends used to visit a store named ‘Primos’ which was situated in Leeds City Centre and at the time was the only designer store in the city.

Martin was a regular customer to the store and later became friendly with the manager who told him the store was about to go bankrupt. The manager proposed that Martin went

into business with him and that they open their own store together even though Martin had no previous retail experience.

The first priority for the pair was to search for potential brands for the new store, this was the first instance where the two business partners differed on opinions. Martin was looking to stock Italian brands such as Valentino and Armani whereas his business partner was more interested in buying cheap stock and selling it at higher prices. Despite their differences the two carried on searching for a store and after a while Unit 18 in the Queens Arcade (opposite the current store) became available. Yet when asked to provide some money to open

the store, Martin’s business partner had nothing. This was the final straw and the partnership was quickly dissolved.

All was not lost as one of Martin’s friends was quick to jump in and pick up the short fall left behind by the previous business partner and the new pair set off to Paris with £8000 in search of stock. The first brand they purchased was Liberto Jeans. They picked the styles they liked and guessed the sizes and quantities they would need as neither of them had any knowledge of the retail industry. Martin and his new business partner were so focused on getting the shop ready; they didn’t even have a name for the shop until two weeks before opening.

Martin met his wife Louise in 1985 at an iconic Accent Clothing fashion show where Louise was modelling.

Louise started out doing the book keeping for the growing business and at the turn of the dot com boom pioneered Accent’s online presence.

By 1990, Accent was steadily growing and the store expanded into the empty unit next door, doubling the store size! By 1995 the shop had become so popular that the decision to lease the unit opposite was made and Accent moved into its current store.

At the same time, Harvey Nichols were about to open their first store outside of London, just at the bottom or Queens Arcade which created a lot of demand for the units. The new Harvey Nichols store brought a new buzz and many more designer stores flocked to Leeds city centre.

The knock on effect was great for Accent as owners from top restaurants like Crab and Oyster and footballers like Fabrizio Ravanelli who played for Middlesbrough were coming instore purchasing clothes.

Accent Ladies’ arrived in Victoria Quarter in 1992 before later moving to Queens Arcade opposite the

Accent Men’s and Accent Junior’s store in a space spread over three floors. In 2013 Accent Ladies joined both the menswear and junior collection under one roof; providing an inclusive shopping experience.

Accent sensed that the retail environment was changing and in 2008 opened its online store. The online store is also used as another catalogue and customers regularly come into store with a product on their phone looking to try it on.

Accent Clothing is now a full family affair with both their son, Jack, and daughter, Becky, joining the thriving business.

Jack has been a full time employee at Accent since September 2010 where he is the assistant menswear buyer and took an active role in the opening of the new Bradford store.

Becky has been working on the ladies’ shop floor ever since she was fourteen and took a year out to work in the web office before completing her education. Becky returned to Accent upon graduation and is now a valued member of the web team, working not only as the marketing and e-commerce manager but also as a ladies wear buyer.

Replay Replay has been stocked by Accent Clothing since the very beginning and the Italian brand continue to impress with their great quality and finish to this day.

or this ‘Day At The Races’ inspired shoot, some of Accent’s most elegant brands were styled with bespoke millinery pieces from one of Yorkshire’s most uniquely creative designers: Adele Woodrow of Eléda hats.

Adele Woodrow’s millinery career began when she became an apprentice to the Queen’s milliner Philip Somerville. Fully trained and with a passion to bring the art of millinery back to Yorkshire, she established her thriving millinery boutique in Guiseley, Leeds in 1991.

Adele and her team offer clients a full bespoke millinery package. Adele’s flamboyant, creative personality translates to her hats; displaying a unique craftsmanship and delivering quality and individual style.

Adele’s skills and experience have been recognised across the world, with collections featured in various media publications and heralded by the likes of Condé Nast.

ccent Junior first opened its doors in 1986 stocking the most sought after childrenswear for 0-16yr olds. The junior collection; for both boys and girls, is made up of well-known designer brands including Belstaff, Replay, Stone Island, Armani Junior, BOSS, Lyle & Scott and Paul & Shark. Popular brands Moncler and Ralph Lauren are both instore exclusives and can be found in the Leeds store.

The creative team put together a selection of outfits from the Spring/Summer collections to produce a portfolio of images for the junior look book.

Accent Clothing debuted its first junior only fashion showcase in early spring 2016. They teamed up with Boomchikkaboom and Burt & Nelly to throw the instore event, which showcased a new junior shop fit, shots from the Junior look book shoot and the winner of the first ever ‘Cutest baby’ competition: Elliot Thomas.

Elliott Thomas was the winner of the cutest baby contest. The competition was put in place to find new local faces to feature in the Junior Spring/Summer 2016 marketing campaign.

A

ccent Clothing have hosted numerous events over the years ranging from local fashion shows to charity raffles.

One of the most popular instore events to date was the official opening in 2013. This event revealed the relocation of the newly designed ladies wear store thus creating a one stop destination for designer clothing.

Having departments under one roof creates a much more desirable shopping experience for the full family.

Many of the brands stocked by Accent Clothing hold in-store events to talk

about their garments. For example Replay held denim distressing workshop in both 2009 and 2013 which proved to be massively popular with Accent’s customers.

The Accent Clothing philosophy of ‘Fashion for our Friends’ extends invitations to their events to long-standing customers and family & friends of the staff.

Accent Clothing are also well associated with events around the city including Live At Leeds, Leeds Fashion, Bethany Smiles and Leeds Fashion Ball. Here they help to promote local talent including independent designers, musicians and models.

A

fter 31 years in retail Accent Clothing celebrated the start of a new chapter with the opening of a second Accent store in the Bradford Broadway development.

The new Bradford Broadway store continues the Accent mission by creating a personal shopping experience and welcoming customers as friends. The store specialises in heritage brands such as; Matchless, Belstaff, Replay & Grenson alongside designer brands for men and juniors, including; Replay, Lacoste, Teeboy, Pearly King, Cruyff, Scotch and Soda, Swims, True Religion & BOSS to name just a few. The new Bradford store also hosts some brands exclusive to the store such as; 4bidden, Cortica, Creative Recreation, Pawn Kings and Timex Watches.

The store opened in November of last year featuring a guest appearance from X-Factor winner, Alexandra Burke.

This new store is an addition to the current location in Queens Arcade Leeds, the global e-commerce site and the Replay store in Trinity Leeds.
