Carpentry and Joinery The Construction Industry is one of the major employers in Wales, so it’s no surprise that a well trained workforce is essential. You can gain the necessary skills at Coleg Ceredigion by studying Carpentry at Level 1 and progressing through to Level 3. As part of a multi skill initiative, students will learn some trowel skills during the first year, and are able to choose between Site Carpentry or Bench Joinery at Level 2 and 3. For each level you will be assessed through ongoing demonstration of your practical skills and theory assessments. You will be required to sit a multi-choice test on the completion of each unit, as well as one external multi-choice exam towards the end of the academic year.

What will I be studying? You will continue to combine practical learning in our workshops with theory sessions, but at a higher level. Subjects will include: first fixing techniques, second fixing techniques and structural carcassing along with core units.

Our students consistently achieve high standards both in terms of pass rates and through participation in major competitions such as SkillBuild. The college has excellent links within the industry, and is happy to be working with Construction Skills in supporting people through professional construction courses. Excellent study facilities mean that the practical experience gained is second to none, and will no doubt help as you build your career in the Construction Industry.

Some of the subjects you will study will include: Confirming work activities and resources for an occupational work area, developing and maintaining good occupational working relationships, confirming the occupational method of work in the work place, erecting complex structural carcassing.

Level 1 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery Campus: Cardigan Duration: 1 year Entry Requirements: Although you need no formal entry qualifications, a practical aptitude is an advantage. Entry is subject to satisfactory interview. What will I be studying? You will combine practical learning in our workshops with theory sessions. Subjects will include: Construction Health & Safety, using and maintaining carpentry hand tools, handling and storing materials. You will have also study essential skills in communication and application of number up to level 2. What can I do after completing the course successfully? You may be able to progress onto the Level 2 Diploma in Carpentry and Joinery course, or join an apprenticeship scheme when you have gained employment in the industry.

Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations Campus: Cardigan Duration: 1 year Entry Requirements: Level 1 Carpentry qualification and a satisfactory interview. You should also be employed in the Construction industry.

What can I do when I have successfully completed the course? You may be able to progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Wood Occupations.

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations Campus: Cardigan Duration: 1 year Entry Requirements: Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Wood Occupations. You should also be employed in the Construction industry.

What can I do after successfully completing the course? You may be able to progress to a higher level qualification such as a Foundation Degree or HNC, HND etc. in building studies, or employment.
