I started working at Amcal Max Albany Creek 5 years ago as a trainee pharmacy assistant. After working in this store I knew I wanted a career in the pharmacy industry. I worked hard and within 3 years I was managing the store. I have always loved the retail industry as it allows me to be a part of a team as well as interacting with customers on a daily basis. I am lucky enough to work with the best team I have ever worked with, not to mention I have the most lovely customers which makes it a pleasure to come to work everyday. In March I was notified that I was a finalist for the national Amcal Max Business Manager of the year award and I won! I feel very proud to have won this award but I feel it is a team effort and my team makes it easy to love what I do.

New Wellness Centre Opens in Albany Creek True North Wellness has just opened in the new centre opposite the Albany Creek Primary School on Albany Creek Road.

TNW is owned and managed by Vicky Graham and Kelly Pope who are helping clients reach their health and fitness targets. The TNW exercise and health clinic offers a range of health practitioners including Exercise Physiologist, specialised personal trainer, Dietician, Diabetes Educator, Psychologist and Pilates Instructor. The difference between a normal gym and our exercise and health clinic is that all sessions are supervised and exercise is prescribed to cater to each person’s individual needs whether your wanting to lose weight, reach your fitness goal, manage your diabetes or recovering from illness or surgery.

As an Accredited Exercise Physiologist Vicky Graham has the knowledge and 25 years experience to help those people with special medical conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer or injury rehab. She is passionate about helping individuals to improve their health and fitness and uses health coaching to support her clients with their specific health needs. Many GP’s or Physiotherapists will refer patients to Vicky who will help use ‘one on one’ exercise sessions to help people get back into a safe and effective exercise routine.

Kelly Pope was motivated to become a Pilates instructor and specialized personal trainer when she was dealing with her own back and neck issues. She has learnt that tailor made exercise is the medicine that can make positive change to people’s lives. Her personal training and group sessions cater for people getting back into exercise and for all age groups.

Pilates can be a great way for people to improve their confidence with exercise laying the foundations with strong core and pelvic floor support.

One on one consultations or health packages are available for exercise physiology, health coaching, personal training, dietician, diabetes educator and/or psychologist. Small group sessions include Yogalates (combination of pilates, yoga and stretching), Fitcamp (strength, cardio and flexibility) and Functional Fitness (ideal for increasing balance and strength for everyday life).

The ATLANTOtec vibration method corrects the alignment of the first vertebra. Often the first vertebra can be incorrectly positioned following an injury like whiplash, a fall, or blow to the head.

The method which is widely available in Europe involves vibration massage of the long strap muscles of the back and shoulders and deep vibration massage of the neck muscles.

Once the muscles are relaxed the atlas first vertebrae can be palpated. If diagnosis confirms the atlas is not correctly aligned, it is vibrated back into its correct place.

Following the treatment patients find an improvement in the neck’s range of motion, improvement in posture. In addition improvement can be seen in the energy flow to and from the brain, as well as improvement in breathing and reduction in chronic pain and headaches which means that better sleep patterns are restored. Alignment is usually only needed once.

The club also had 5 talented swimmers at 2014 Australian Swimming Championships held in Brisbane recently.

These were: Aisling Scott, Hannah Beighton, Ridge Grimsey, Cameron Joyes and Stuart Lester. ACSC finished this wonderful season with 3rd position in the BSA Premiership Division.

A Lifetime of Poetry for Snow Not many people can claim that they have had the same hobby for over nine decades but Broughton ‘Snow’ Cottam, who celebrated his 99th birthday earlier this month, has been an avid poet for most of his life.

Snow, a resident at the Aveo Albany Creek retirement village, was born on the 4th of April, 1915 and has been writing poetry for as long as he can remember.

Snow says he has always had a fascination with poetry and has written hundreds of poems throughout his lifetime, several of which have been published.

Although there are hundreds to choose from, Snow says his favorite poem is ‘The Man From Bennelong’ which he wrote about Woollarawarre Bennelong who served as an interlocutor between the Aboriginals and the British in the 1700s.

Snow continues to be an avid writer and regularly contributes poems to the Aveo Albany Creek Village Breeze newsletter.

The residents and staff at Aveo Albany Creek celebrated Snow’s milestone birthday in early April at the village’s monthly zodiac luncheon which was attended by over 70 people.

Fellow resident and village artist, Ian Gibb presented Snow with an artwork he created which included a photo of Snow and a poem that he wrote in acknowledgement of his 99th birthday.

With no plans of slowing down, Snow is currently working on a poem about the Australian Women’s Land Army which he has been working on for over a year.

North Brisbane Property Update

By Tom Murphy The Brisbane property market is currently experiencing growth and stability, with the first Quarter of the year finishing strongly.

For the first time since the real estate “bust” we are starting to see prices steadily increasing again. According to RP Data during the month of March 2014 alone, Brisbane Property prices rose by 2.9%, and a similar amount expected for April.

With interest rates still relatively low, and consumer / buyer confidence high again, the amount of interest in properties is very high. This shortage of supply and high demand by buyers is what drives price increases.
