20 kW sets go into commercial vessels that need continuous AC power to operate. Without power the work doesn’t get done. Unfortunately most sets this size have small displacement, light duty diesels that can’t stand up to heavy use. Some even need turbochargers to compensate for their small displacement. The M20CRW3 is different. Powered by a naturally aspirated, four cylinder, 2.2 liter (135 cid) Lugger diesel, this set has the low end torque needed to start big electric motors without breaking a sweat. You choose heat exchanger or keel cooling. The marinization is designed to reduce belts, hoses, gaskets and other trouble spots. The components are stoutly built from the best materials: cast-iron, cupro-nickel, stainless steel and bronze. Strong and clean, the Lugger meets US EPA Tier III emission standards to protect the environment you depend on for your living. An engineer’s dream, the set is simple to operate and maintain. The DC electrical system uses reliable relays instead of delicate printed circuit boards. If a failure should occur, you can simply plug in an inexpensive relay. Relay DC logic lets you have multiple control panels up to 110 feet from the set. All service points are on one side within easy reach. Need hydraulic power? Add an optional electric clutch front PTO. At the touch of a button you have up to 30 HP at 1800 rpm to run your hydraulic equipment. Got a big job hauling, towing, pushing patrolling or fishing? Need a simple, reliable, durable, affordable set? You’ve found it. Let your dealer put a M20CRW3 to work for you before your next trip out.

60 Hz / 1800 RPM For 5 Decades, The Commercial Solution

• Molded belt guard for safety.

Commercial operators have a specific and challenging set of expectations for their power systems. Generators should be able to run at full load for extended periods. If they can’t; that equates to time lost and livelihoods threatened. No one understands this better than Northern Lights. Our product line began in the unforgiving Alaskan fishing grounds. We have made improvements over the years, but have never forgotten the commitment to making the most reliable, durable and simple to use machines on the market. Case in point: the M30CW. A commercial heritage.

Low RPM horses vs. Paper ponies.

Initially designed for Alaskan fisherman, Luggers are well known by commercial and pleasure craft operators for their long life and smooth, quiet operation.

Light-duty, small-displacement diesels operate at speeds up to 4200 RPM. This means high piston speed and short life. Lugger power comes from cubic inch displacement and long stroke design. With a maximum RPM of only 2400 or 2500 and a recommended cruise of 200 RPM less, a higher percentage of the available horsepower is usable. Lower RPM also means less noise and wear, more complete fuel combustion and longer life.

Turbocharged and aftercooled.

The L1064T1 features a mechanical fuel delivery system and liquid cooled turbocharger for enhanced fuel efficiency. Ideal for the commercial operator who runs full-throttle for long periods, the L1064T1 is designed for long hours and simplified maintenance. The L1064A also has a liquid cooled turbocharger, with an aftercooler and electronic DE 10 fuel injection. Featuring a conservative 0.42-0.51 FWHP to CID ratio, the L1064A is the right engine for semi-displacement trawlers and small work boats. All the L1064 diesel engines are US EPA Tier II compliant with an in-line design that makes them perfect repower engines for older in-line six cylinder machines.

Ironclad marinization.

The Lugger 1064 (106 mm bore-4 cylinder), 4.5 liter, diesels have heavy-duty tractor blocks. This high torque design provides a strong foundation; but a marine engine is only as good as its marinization and no one’s process is as thorough as Lugger. The expansion tank and liquid-cooled exhaust manifold are cast iron. Some engines only use bypass water to cool their manifolds. Lugger integrates the two pass manifold into the cooling system main stream to assure even temperature control and to eliminate hot spots that can stress metal components.

• USCG approved fuel filter with vent and drain.

Wet liners protect your investment.

Lugger cylinder liners are surrounded by coolant for better heat dissipation. The liners are replaceable to reduce overhaul costs. Unlike “linerless” throwaways, a Lugger can be rebuilt in the boat.

Easy to live with.

Low RPM Luggers are naturally quiet. A special silencer-filter reduces air intake noise. The cast rocker arm cover reduces valve noise and traps crankcase oil vapors to keep your engine room clean. 1064s have two counter-rotating balancing shafts to provide smooth operation.

Lower operating costs.

Direct injection, long stroke and precise fuel metering all add up to excellent fuel economy.

If it’s not there, it can’t break. That’s why the pipes, hoses, belts and gaskets that cause problems on other engines have been engineered away. This also makes Luggers easy to maintain. Service points are on a single side for easy access and the in-line design gives you elbow room in the engine room.

Take power from both ends. The full line of options and accessories lets you design an engine that is custom built to match your vessel’s needs. With an optional front power-take-off your Lugger can power your vessel’s hydraulic auxiliary systems. It’s more than an engine, your L1064 is a total marine power system.

Thorough testing. Every Lugger engine is thoroughly tested and quality controlled before it leaves our factory, to ensure the reliability, durability and quality Luggers are known for.

L1064 Series Initially designed for Alaskan fisherman, Luggers are well known by commercial and pleasure craft operators for their long life and smooth, quiet operation.

Natural or turbo-aftercooled.

The L1064D is a time tested diesel with natural aspiration and a proven mechanical fuel injection system. Producing 0.24 FWHP per cubic inch, it is built for the vessel owner who wants an engine that operates under the lowest stress possible. This makes it the ultimate main or wing engine for long range, full displacement vessels.

The expansion tank and liquid-cooled exhaust manifold

• USCG approved fuel filter with vent and drain.

are cast iron. Some engines only use bypass water to cool their manifolds. Lugger integrates the two pass manifold into the cooling system main stream to assure even temperature control and to eliminate hot spots that can stress metal components.

Low RPM horses vs. Paper ponies.

A commercial heritage. Initially designed for Alaskan fishermen, Luggers have always been dependable. Used as prime movers on Northern Lights marine generator sets, they are well known by commercial and pleasure craft owners for long life and smooth, quiet operation. Today, electronically controlled Luggers are adding US EPA Tier II compliance to their reputation for reliability, simplicity and durability.

maximum and cruise RPM, a higher percentage of the available horsepower is usable. Lower rpm also means less noise and wear, more complete fuel combustion and longer life.

Turbocharged or turbo-aftercooled.

All L1066s have turbochargers to increase power without resorting to high speed operation. Lugger turbochargers are liquid-cooled for safety. Need more power? Choose the “A” or “H” models. These have an aftercooler that lowers the temperature of the combustion air. Cool, oxygen rich air gives you more power.

Wet liners protect your investment.

Lugger cylinder liners are surrounded by coolant for better heat dissipation. The liners are replaceable to reduce overhaul costs. Unlike “linerless” throw-aways, a Lugger can be rebuilt in the boat, over and over again.

Electronic engine control lower fuel costs.

ECU controlled, direct fuel injection, long stroke and precise fuel metering all add up to excellent fuel economy.

Easy to live with.

Low RPM Luggers are naturally quiet. No high RPM whine. Just a steady rhythm. A special silencer-filter reduces air intake noise. The cast rocker arm cover reduces valve noise and traps crankcase oil vapors to keep your engine room clean. Quiet and smooth; 1066s have torsional dampeners that decrease engine vibration.

• L1066A, L1066H have two pass, cupronickle, aftercooler. O-ring sealed, no gaskets. Easy to clean, oval water tube design.

Reliability, simplicity and durability from more cubic inches and lower RPM.

High rpm, high performance throw-away diesels have their place in planing pleasure craft that rarely get too far from the local yacht club. But why put one of these engines, even a derated version, in your commercial boat or long range cruising yacht? These vessels need a real, heavy duty diesel that produces high, prop twisting torque at a rational rpm. They need a conservatively rated engine with long life features like the L1276A2. A commercial heritage Initially designed for Alaskan fishermen, Luggers have always been dependable. Used as prime movers on Northern Lights marine generator sets, they are well known by commercial and pleasure craft owners for long life and smooth, quiet operation. Today, electronic fuel injected engines like this L1276A2 are adding US EPA Tier II compliance to Lugger’s reputation for reliability, simplicity and durability. Ironclad marinization The L1276A2 has a heavy-duty, overhead cam tractor block. This high torque design provides a strong foundation; but a marine engine is only as good as its marinization. The materials used must be strong. The design must be clean. Look at the photo below. Note the lack of hoses, belts, gaskets and welded cooling components. The liquid-cooled exhaust manifold is cast iron to • Turbocharger is jacket water cooled for safety.

withstand temperature fluctuations and resist electrolysis. Unlike some engines that only use bypass water, the 1276 manifold is integrated into the cooling system mainstream, and twopass water flow assures even temperature control and eliminates hot spots. The piping is stainless steel or bronze as is the gear driven raw water pump. The heat exchangers for the engine and gear have cupro-nickel elements. Low rpm horses vs. Paper ponies. Light-duty, small-displacement diesels are rated at speeds up to 3000 rpm. This means high piston speeds, more wear and short life. The 1276’s power comes from its big 766 cubic inch displacement and long stroke design. Max rpm is only 2100. Cruise RPM is 1800 for the continuous rating or 1900 for medium and high output. Lower rpm also means less noise and wear, more complete fuel combustion and longer life. Wet liners protect your investment. Lugger cylinder liners are surrounded by coolant for better heat dissipation. The liners are replaceable to reduce overhaul costs. Unlike “linerless” throwaways, a Lugger can be rebuilt to factory specs in the boat. Gently turbocharged and aftercooled. The turbocharger is liquid-cooled for safety. The aftercooler uses jacket water so the intake air temp is controlled thermostatically to avoid over cooling. Over cooling can cause incomplete combustion and smoke.

• Closed loop crank case vent for a clean engine room.

• Jacket-water cooled, cast iron exhaust manifold. Two pass coolant flow for even temperature control.

Electronic engine control lower fuel costs. ECU controlled, direct fuel injection, four valves per cylinder, centered unit injectors and precise fuel metering all add up to excellent fuel economy. Easy to live with. Low rpm Lugger engines are naturally quiet. No high rpm whine. Just a steady rhythm. A special silencer-filter reduces air intake noise. Quiet and smooth; 1276’s torsional dampener decreases engine vibration. Easy to maintain too. Service points are on one side for easy access. The in-line design gives you elbow room in the engine space. Take power from both ends. The full line of options and accessories lets you design an engine that is custom built to match your vessel’s needs. With an optional front power-take-off your Lugger can power your vessel’s hydraulic auxiliary systems. It’s more than an engine, your L1276 is a total marine power system.

Long life for any marine use. Whatever your marine use; workboat, fishboat or yacht, an investment in Lugger diesel technology pays high dividends of performance, reliability, long life and lower operating costs. We begin with a specially prepared Komatsu engine block built for large construction equipment with heavy-duty features you won’t find in ordinary truck diesels. Features that pay off in big savings over the engine’s lifetime. On this strong foundation, we build a marine diesel that has proven itself in rugged commercial service and world cruising yachts. More goes in, so you can take more out. The 6140AL2 produces 700 Horsepower at only 2100 rpm and a maximum torque of 2187 foot pounds. It takes thorough engineering and the best components to attain this level of performance without sacrificing life cycle, onboard comfort or operational economy. A complete list of features start on the next page. Take special note of the: Individual 4 valve cylinder heads. High pressure fuel injection system. Jacket-water cooling system that thermostatically controls the temperature of oil, intake air, turbocharger, exhaust manifold and internal components yet is clean and simple with no belts and few hoses. Component materials; bronze, stainless steel, cast iron, cupro-nickel

• Cupro-nickel heat exchanger.

and marine aluminum castings. Each chosen, not for its price, but on its ability to do the job and survive under continuous duty. High power, low weight, more boat speed. Always important to sport fishermen, boat speed has now become critical to most commercial operators. The 6140’s higher power-to-weight ratio gives you the power you need without dragging down your vessel with excessive weight, making your vessel lighter and faster. Get specific about fuel. Since fuel is your largest operational expense, it makes sense to reduce it as much as possible. Brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC) is a measurement of the weight of fuel an engine burns to produce one horsepower for one hour. The 6140’s BSFC goes as low a 0.331 lbs/hp/ hr! Compare its BSFC with any engine in its class. Keeps engine room in-line. Extremely compact for its displacement and power, the 6140 fits in tight engine rooms. Unlike wall-to-wall V-8s, its in-line design with single exhaust and unit mounted expansion tank, make installation simple. Twin engine vessels are twice blessed.

• Large, cast expansion tank. Easy coolant fill. No welds to break.

• Coolant filter and PH conditioner.

A mechanic’s dream. The 6140 is easy to service. All service points are on one side within easy reach. The in-line design leaves room to move around the engine. Individual heads, replaceable wet-cylinder liners, fewer hoses and belts, and clean design simplify service. Since the engine only has six cylinders, instead of eight or ten, it has fewer parts to wear out and replace. All this means less time and money spent on repairs. Electric clutch PTO for power out both ends. You can take up to 1000 ft-lbs of power off the front of the 6140 with an electric clutch PTO (power take off). There is also a 20 hp hydraulic pump mount pad and another accessory drive. Use them to run hydraulics, power steering pumps, alternators, water pumps or other hydraulic auxiliary systems. Tested, tested, tested. After the engine is built to your specification, it is dyno tested. Then the gear is installed and it’s run again. This is just part of Lugger’s quality control program. When the engine is delivered it is ready to go to work.

• Jacket-water aftercooler increases performance. Thermostatically controlled to avoid overcooling.

• DC electric relays and circuit breaker. • Washable foam air cleaner.

L6170A For years, men who work on the water have relied on big, in-line, six cylinder diesels like the Lugger 6170A. A big bore, high torque 23 liter engine that will work day and night without complaint. Unlike the small bore, high speed V8-10-12 engines from some manufacturers, the 6170A embodies the original diesel philosophy of long life, safety, total dependability and low life-cycle costs. The longer it runs the more you save. Its values may be old fashioned, but not its design. Based on an industrial duty block from Komatsu, a world leader in engine technology, it incorporates advanced features you won’t find on any other engine.

Put more technology in... Features that maximize life and increase efficiency such as: Nodular iron pistons with dual circuit oil spray cooling. Individual, four valve cylinder heads. Replaceable wet cylinder liners. Liquid cooled turbocharger. Jacket water aftercoolers. Mechanical variable timing fuel injection. Dual fuel and oil filters. Coolant filter/ conditioner. Optional front PTO (power take off) with an electric clutch. We put more in and then we... • Cast heat exchanger cooling expansion tank. No welds to break.

Take less power out. Continuously rated at 700 horsepower, the L6170A gives the tug boat operator 2086 foot pounds of barge shoving torque at 1500 rpm. With a conservative hp/cid ratio of 0.5:1, it works without straining. Its 900 horsepower high output rating is only 29% above the continuous duty rating. This is an engine rated for the long haul, not stretched for the short run.

Cut your fuel costs.

The L6170A’s performance comes from superior engineering and proven mechanical operation. So does its remarkable fuel economy. With a specific fuel consumption rate going as low as 0.331 lbs/hp/hr, the L6170A will lower your operating costs and extend your vessel’s working range. Compare the fuel curves on the back cover with any engine in its class. Then calculate the money an L6170A will save you on fuel bills.

HORSEPOWER

The L6170A combines traditional reliability with tomorrow’s technology.

700 /1800 rpm Continuous 800/2000 rpm Medium Duty 900/2100 rpm High Output

Easy to service. Clean design eliminates trouble spots. Hoses, belts, rubber impellers and electronic gadgets have been engineered away. What’s left is accessible and easy to maintain. Individual heads, wet liners and oil pan access doors allow one cylinder to be rebuilt without disturbing the rest. Per-hole parts costs are very competitive. And rebuilds are less painful since it has 6 cylinders instead of 8 or 12.

Clean, quiet operation.

The L6170A is under 43 inches wide. Unlike wall-to-wall Vees, it gives you an engine room with elbow room. Easy to install too; with one exhaust and one cooling circuit.

Internal oil lines and close tolerance machining eliminate oil leaks. Low load smoke is cut by “clean-burn” combustion design and jacket water aftercooling. Four cycle operation and vibration attenuation features make it quiet and smooth. In the engine room or on deck, the L6170A is easy to live with.

Electric clutch PTO for power out both ends.

Tested, tested, tested.

With an optional front PTO, your Lugger can power vessel’s bow thrusters, alternators and other auxiliary equipment. It’s more than an engine, it’s a total marine power system.

First the engine is dyno tested after marinization. Then the reverse gear is installed and it’s run again. This testing is part of Lugger’s standard quality control program.
