Dear Patriot Families,

The first semester is now over, and we are well into our second semester. We have many exciting events happening during the second semester culminating in our class of 2017 graduation on May 24, 2017 at 9:30am at the Amway Arena. In addition to graduation, the second semester is also filled with different assessments. The Florida Standards Assessments, End of Course exams, and Advanced Placement exams are right around the corner, and our students and teachers have been working extremely hard preparing for these exams. All students will be provided exact times and locations for their exams. Please read this edition of the Patriot Parade for more information regarding specific information in regards to testing. Students are currently registering for classes for the 2017-2018 school year. Please review your student’s request for courses. In particular, please choose your child’s math class with careful consideration and with input from your student’s current math teacher. We will be finalizing our master schedule prior

to the summer, and schedule changes will be very difficult after that process has been completed. Please also note the summer school dates for this year. To upgrade you on where we are as school with regards to technology implementation, LBHS has purchased four more laptop computer carts and is starting the process of refreshing the Media Center’s seven year old computers. Every English, reading, and ESOL classroom has computer access in order to support Achieve implementation and access for all our students. Once again, thank you to all our parents for your continued support. We are working with you to provide the best educational opportunities possible, so that our “Patriots Meet the Challenge”. GO PATRIOTS! Dr. Trent Daniel Principal

From your School Resource Officer, Anthony Gentile

We are so proud and thankful to announce that Lake Brantley High School is a Positive Behavior Support Gold Model School this year. This is an honor, and we received an award at the January 24th SCPS School Board Meeting. This award recognizes our school for faithfulness and success in implementing the principles of positive support for respect, responsibility, and readiness to learn. Thanks to all our students for their positive choices, and thanks to our faculty and administration for their support and encouragement of our PBS program. Go, Patriots! Thanks for Meeting the Challenge!

Patriots, I want to remind you that safety is a priority. In particular, pedestrian safety and the use of marked crosswalks is a requirement.

CFE Brantley Branch

As a result, the Altamonte Springs Police Department will be enforcing this violation aggressively throughout the school year. This violation can result in a citation in the amount of $64.50. While our goal is not to impose fines on our students, it may be necessary as a teaching tool if multiple violations occur.

The Brantley Branch of Central Florida Educator’s Federal Credit Union is open for business. The branch is located in Building 1. It is accessible from the courtyard and the guidance lobby.

I want to share some concerning statistics from Transportation for America. From 2000-2009, approximately 47,700 pedestrians were killed in the United States while crossing the street. In addition, over 688,000 pedestrians were injured. This is equivalent to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle every 7 minutes. Central Florida was #1 for most dangerous metro areas for pedestrians and currently these statistics are on the rise. Florida had the biggest increase in 2015 at 1.35 percent per 100,000 residents. Based on this information and my observations while at Lake Brantley, students need to be more aware when crossing our roads. The use of crosswalks is vital when trying to reduce the risk of an accident. There are numerous crosswalks nearby to accommodate our students. Failure to do so will be considered a violation of the law.

Please remember safety is a priority, and please use the designated crosswalks!

Attendance & Make-up Time policies Please review the following policies carefully, as some policies may have changed from prior years. Please contact your student’s administrator if you have any questions or concerns. Absentee Policy: • A student under the age of 16 is required by state law to attend school. Additionally, a student may have his/her driver’s license revoked due to excessive absences. All doctor notes or other official documentation must be turned in within 5 days of the absence. NO PARENT NOTES ARE CONSIDERED AS EXCUSED ABSENCE. • A student with more than 9 unexcused absences for a semester in any class will not receive “credit” for that class. Students may see their school counselor about making up time to have the credit reinstated. • A student will be considered absent from class if the student arrives or leaves class greater than or equal to 5 minutes. A parent/guardian may access the student’s record of attendance via SKYWARD. • Participating in school activities or attending to school business is considered in attendance. The activity is considered a field trip and the only type of exempt absence. • A student suspended for disciplinary reasons is not to attend school and will be counted absent. Absences due to suspension will be counted as excused. Tardiness: Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Each teacher is responsible for defining a tardy to his/her class and reporting student tardiness. At Lake Brantley, tardiness results in the following discipline: 1st tardy: verbal warning from teacher, 2nd tardy: written referral for a 1-hour school detention and phone call home from teacher. Subsequent tardies will result in a referral to the building office for further disciplinary sanctions. Make-Up Time: Students may begin to make up time once they have accrued more than nine (9) absences. Students are NOT allowed to “bank” make-up time hours prior to ten (10) unexcused absences.
