It is with delight that I introduce and welcome the new president of the Alumnae Association, Patricia McGovern Hill ’78. As a legacy Mom, Patti boasts of a graduated angel, Lindsay ’08, and a brand new angel who just received her wings, Sheila ’13. Over the past several years Patti has participated fully in the life of AHA: serving on the Steering Committee for the renovation of the cafeteria; co-chairing the Mother/Daughter Fashion Show; helping with Angelic Evening; and attending countless school activities and meetings. Patti’s love and enthusiasm for Holy Angels are contagious. Thrilled to serve as President of the Alumnae Association, Patti looks forward to uniting alums from the Fort Lee and Demarest campuses by engaging them in activities that will strengthen their ties with AHA and with one another, while promoting mentoring interactions with our current student body.

The Alumnae Association is in good hands with Patti’s leadership.

Since October, our Director of Alumnae, Dorrie Voulgaris, and I have traveled across the country gathering alumnae in California, Florida, Maryland and Boston, MA. The primary purpose of these alumnae gatherings is to connect angels living in close proximity to one another. Once within the same room, the AHA spirit and energy take over as angels interact with one another, uniting the past with the present.

Good news makes us free. The Middle States Accreditation Committee awarded AHA the gold standard, stating: The Academy of the Holy Angels is mission driven...is intrinsically linked to the ministries of the School Sisters of Notre Dame...provides for the spiritual development of its students...is truly a school of excellence. SAT scores at AHA rank among the highest in Bergen County: second in Writing, third in Critical Reading and tenth in Math. Faithfully, the administration and faculty empower each young woman to reach the fullness of her potential...so that she may share her gifts with others. For almost 130 years Holy Angels has remained true to its mission. Thank you for your fidelity and support.

Virginia received the following from the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools: It is my pleasure to inform you that, at its Fall 2008 meeting, the Commission on Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools voted to grant the following to Academy of the Holy Angels: ACCREDITATION. The term of accreditation is for seven years; therefore, your school’s accreditation will expire on December 1, 2015.

The Commission’s policy defines Accreditation as: An “Accredited” institution is an educational organization that meets all MSA Standards for Accreditation, adheres to applicable MSA policies, and meets the requirements of the self-study protocol used.

ACCREDITATION MAINTENANCE REQUIREMENTS Throughout the term of accreditation, Holy Angels will be expected to meet the following requirements: 1 Continue to meet the Commission’s Standards for Accreditation.

2 Notify the Commission prior to making any substantive changes to the goals for which the school received accreditation.

3 Make a good faith effort to fulfill your commitment to implement your Plan for Growth and Improvement and to achieve your performance objectives.

4 Conduct at least once annually a formal review of the Plan for Growth and Improvement.

5 Submit a Mid-Term Report at the beginning of the third year in the accreditation term in which the school provides evidence of implementing its Plan for Growth and Improvement and of progress being made toward achieving its objectives.The Report will be reviewed by the Middle States staff, which will determine whether an on-site visit must be conducted to examine any areas of concern.

HOLY ANGELS HAS EARNED THE GOLD STANDARD Your school has worked hard to attain the distinction of accreditation by the Middle States Association. You have established that your school meets the rigorous standards of quality established by the Association. You have willingly held your school open to examination by your professional peers and to public accountability.

We are both thrilled and very grateful to the many parents, students, faculty, staff and administration whose hard work, dedication and love of school have brought us this distinguished honor.

Holy Angels accreditation was based on the recommendations submitted by the Middle States Validation Team to the Commission on Secondary Schools after their visit last April. The report has many wonderful things to say about Holy Angels. It also identifies areas in need of improvement. Because we are a future oriented school that has a deeply engrained planning ethic, we believe we will be able to successfully meet all our student Performance Objectives and incorporate the suggestions of the visiting team. In addition the Validation Team found that the Academy of the Holy Angels is in continued compliance with the 12 standards set forth for accredited members of the Middle States Association. The Planning Team has been paying particular attention to the commendations and recommendations contained in each standard. As results are measured they will be shared with the community.

What follows are words from the report of the Middle States Validation Team describing their experience at Academy of the Holy Angels: “The five members of the Validation Team to the Academy of the Holy Angels used the three and one-half day visit to review written documents regarding the plan and its development. The Team interacted with as many of the school’s stakeholders as possible regarding their knowledge, understanding and support for the plan. The Team concluded that it had a full and rich experience of the school leading to the following report and assessment.”

The first section of the report, The Context of the Institution, addressed the material Holy Angels submitted about its history and its current statistics regarding student ethnicity, socio-economic background, religious affiliation and originating towns. We also reported on faculty degree status, upgrades to the physical plant and degree of parental and alumnae involvement.

After addressing the strength of each of these elements, this section of the report concluded with these words: “The soul of the school can be found in looking beyond its educational commitments. Students can spend time in a pocket chapel off the main corridor for a moment of reflection in a busy day.

Eager ‘guardian angels’ await visitors to the ‘Angel for a Day’ program, their infectious good spirits and enthusiasm reaching prospective students more effectively than any tour or open house presentation. The campus is ‘green’ outside and in: maintenance and cleaning products are chosen for their positive environmental impact. Even the problem Canadian geese from the golf course next door are kept under control – not by chemicals or electrical deterrents, but

by Luke, the Border Collie, who reminds the ‘intruders’ that they may not stay.

The Validation Team wishes to praise the Academy of the Holy Angels for its culture

of learning, its expectation of excellence and its faithfulness to the mission of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The Academy of the Holy Angels is indeed rooted in the conviction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame that ‘the world can be changed through the transformation of persons.’ Clearly, the Academy of the Holy Angels is a school where its mission is lived: in the classroom, through service, in its world view, and in the hearts of its administrators, faculty and students.”

Holy Angels spent 18 months gathering and analyzing data for the preparation of the materials submitted to the Middle States Association. However, in another sense, the roots of this evaluation go back to 2002 when Holy Angels produced its 10 year plan after another year of intense meetings with all stakeholder groups. This effort was commended by the evaluation team.

“Life at the Academy of the Holy Angels is imbued with the culture of planning.

Recognizing the need for a strategic plan in 2001, the Board of Trustees at the Academy authorized a formal planning process that would provide a ten-year blueprint for the school as it looked forward to the new millennium. Using the services of an external coordinator from the National Catholic Educational Association to facilitate the process, the document, 2012@AHA: the Ten-Year Plan of the Academy of the Holy Angels, established a steering committee and task forces to focus on academics, Catholic Identity, development and alumnae relations, facilities, finance, marketing and student recruitment, as well as student life and technology. The transition to the AFG process was seamless, and goals which were defined earlier in the decade were refined and revisited.

Holy Angels was commended for its communication and awareness activities throughout the planning process.

In fact, on Big Sister/Little Sister Day, the Class of 2012 received a 30 minute orientation about Middle States from student members of the Planning Team,

learning how they would make a contribution to the ongoing improvement through the three student achievement objectives.

“Survey results indicated a high degree of interest from faculty, students and board members, with a broad response from parents and alumnae. In addition to forms, parents were invited to ‘town meetings’ prior to parent-teacher conferences.

Student awareness was reflected by a five percent membership of the student population on AFG committees, and the student production of a DVD, Middle States: The Movie, which was shared among the stakeholders.”

An important part of this ongoing communication is the annual Review Process, which is conducted by the Action Teams under the leadership of the Department Chairpersons.

The review measures the progress in each of the three student performance objectives, focusing on assessment tools, strategies and the degree of improvement sought in each objective, while making adjustments as needed in the action plans. This information will be communicated to all constituencies at the end of each school year.

“The Validation Team urges the Planning Team and Action Teams to continue to review what has been successfully implemented, what needs to be adjusted and what is to be done next. The Team urges the school to ensure that the process remains alive and dynamic by maintaining the momentum begun so successfully.”

angel athletes Cross Country Bergen County Champs!

The Cross Country team had a stellar season, finishing with an overall record of 5-2. Their season began with a win in the Season Opener Invitational.

The highlight of the season came when the team outran the competition to a 1st Place win in the Bergen County Group B championship, moving on to the final where they became overall Bergen County Champs. They ended their season by placing 4th in the Non-Public State Championships.

Don Bosco Dance Team

Three of our runners placed on 1st Team All Bergen County: Senior Suzana Markolovic, Junior Kaleigh Kenny and Sophomore Jen Molke.

Junior Katie Sylvester made 2nd Team, and Sophomore Maureen Crimmins, 3rd Team. Junior Heather Fuhrman and Sophomore Maura Quinn received Honorable Mention. Suzana Markolovic qualified as an individual for the State Meet of Champions, placing 51st among all runners in New Jersey.

This year, The Don Bosco Dance Team consists of both Varsity and JV teams. Both teams had success in recent competitions: in the MidAtlantic Dance Competition at Towson University in Maryland, the Varsity team came in 1st in both Pom and Hip Hop, in a very competitive field. The JV Team also came in 1st in Hip Hop. At the Garden State Classic Championship at Raritan High School in Hazlet, the JV and Varsity teams both earned 1st place in Hip Hop, and the Varsity team also earned 1st Place in Pom. The Varsity Team was named the Grand Champion of the competition for receiving

the highest score of the day for their Pom routine.

Moving on to the Nationals in Orlando, Florida, the JV team placed 2nd in Hip Hop, and received Silver Medals. This was the first year they competed so it was an amazing accomplishment!

The Varsity team made it to finals in Pom, after tough preliminary and semi-final competitions, ultimately placing 11th, out of over 70 teams. In Hip Hop, the team received the highest score in their preliminary round and was awarded a bye directly into the Finals round, skipping the semi-final competition.

They placed 6th in the Final round of Hip Hop.

Tennis

The Varsity Tennis team had a great season this year! Led by senior captains Brianne Donohue and Kathleen Lieblich, the Angels made it to the 2nd round of the State Tournament and came in 5th overall in the Bergen County Tournament. Amy Park and Emily Liguori, at 2nd Doubles, received 1st Team All League with the remaining starters all receiving 2nd Team All League. Brianne Donohue and Kathleen Lieblich, at 1st Doubles, received 2nd Team All County for their outstanding season. The girls and Coach Roes are sad to see Brianne, Kathleen and Kristen leave but wish them all the best of luck next year in college.

The Soccer team ended their season with an another winning record, 9-8-2. The Angels started off the season strong, winning their first six games and outscoring their opponents by a margin of 18-2. Some of the losses were very close games – losing to Montclair, a very strong Essex County team, in the final minutes of the game, and losing an exciting game to Paramus in overtime. The team made it to the second round of the County Tournament, and for the seventh straight year, qualified for the State

Volleyball The 2008 Holy Angels’ Volleyball team finished their season with 16 wins and 7 losses. The team came out strong as they went undefeated for the start of the season. During the County tournament, the girls made it to the quarter finals. Moving on to the state tournament, they made it to the semi-finals, losing to Union Catholic in 3 games.

Many of the girls earned accolades in the league and in the county: Senior Remy McBain made 1st Team All League as well as 1st Team All County. Erin Scanlon and Nicolette Hollar also made 1st Team All League. Devon Ivie and Ryann Powell made Second Team All League and Olivia Kolodka made Honorable Mention All League.

Soccer

Tournament. Tara Flanagan, Faith Tucker and Courtney Burnett were recognized as Honorable Mention All County, and all three were named 1st Team All League.

2nd Team All League honors went to Veronica Polce, Casey Perez, Amanda Morejon, Kerrin Meseck, Christina Colgary, Stephanie Pagan, Darcy Baboulis-Gyscek and Elizabeth Norton. Lily McLaughlin, Kelsey Burnett and Julie Heyboer received Honorable Mention All League.

angels in the arts Christmas Gala

The annual Christmas Gala was delayed due to inclement weather for the second year in a row. The event took place on the evening of Thursday, January 8th. Even though Christmas had passed, the holiday spirit was still felt. The postponement allowed the good cheer to last just a little bit longer. Following the concert, a reception was held in the Student Commons, sponsored by our Parents’ Guild, with a beautiful spread of food and desserts.

The Spring Concert will take place on Thursday, May 14, 2009. Please join us!

STAGE DOOR

Fall Drama

Stage Door, this year’s Fall Drama, takes place during the Depression. A theatrical boarding house provides an affordable respite for the bevy of struggling stage actresses who reside there. A headstrong and witty girl from the Midwest is determined to become a leading actress on the Great White Way. Despite the uncertainty of the theater trade, she sticks to her guns and wins both the leading role in a Broadway play and the affections and respect of the man she loves.

Budding Artists Jackie Stinson ’11 had never thought of herself as an artist – that was before she picked up a brush in Painting class this past semester.

She had taken drawing classes in the past and had done some sculpture, but didn’t find it as rewarding as this newly found talent. Jackie has been very involved in the Arts, but more in the area of Performing Arts. She is a member of the Don Bosco Dance Team and has been taking dance classes since the 5th grade.

One project for the class was to choose a flower to paint. Jackie chose the chrysanthemum, which is her birth flower. She says, “it is not the prettiest flower in person, but I found it fun to paint.” Even though the class has ended, Jackie’s new hobby will continue. “I asked my mom to get me more supplies to have at home!”

angel awareness Angels Witness History – Inauguration Day 2009 On January 17, 2009, nearly 15,600 students from middle schools, high schools and colleges across the United States gathered in Washington DC to witness history. Five Holy Angels’ students were among the group invited

by CYLC (Congressional Youth Leadership Council): Jocelyn Dulanie ’09, Alexandra Fernandez ’09, Maggie McKee ’12, Maddie Varettoni ’11 and Olivia Yang ’09. The invitations for the Presidential Youth Leadership Conference were sent in May 2008, well before the election had even occurred.

The students boarded the train from NYC and were able to see the throngs of people who were lined up along the Amtrak route waiting for the President-Elect as he followed Lincoln’s historic path to the inauguration. Alexandra Fernandez ’09 shared, “The excitement in the atmosphere was almost tangible.

It didn’t take long for me and the others on the train to feel a sense of anticipation and celebration for the events that were to follow.”

“It finally reached noon and Barack Obama was sworn in,” said Alex Fernandez ’09. “This was marked by the screams of delight and tears of joy overcoming the millions of spectators who filled the National Mall. More striking however, was the deafening silence that rang through the crowd during the inaugural speech. It was a silence like nothing I had ever heard before.”

Maggie McKee ’12 described, “As I eagerly anticipated the events of the day, I thought I would be most changed by a speech or the ceremony. Instead, it took place in the crowds around me. At one point, I turned to face the thousands of people behind me, all from different walks of life, and I was blinded by a sea of American flags. At that moment, I felt a deep sense of unity with all these strangers and tremendous pride in being an American. I know as the years go by and my memories fade, that vision and the feeling of patriotism and hope it inspired will always stay with me.”

Alumnae Attended too!

The conference included a program that incorporated presentations by renowned speakers: General Colin Powell, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Lisa Ling, Erik Weihenmayer and former Vice President Al Gore. The students also had the opportunity to attend the “We Are One” Concert, the Inauguration and Inaugural Parade.

Madeleine Varretoni ’11 said “There were about 2 million of us standing in the freezing cold. Next to me was a young boy and around us were many children, some even toddlers.

These children were still learning their ABCs, yet still knew the significance of what was happening. The little boy next to me screamed ‘Obama, Obama, mommy take a picture of Obama!’.”

Jocelyn Dulanie ’09 stated, “If you have ever been to a World Series baseball game or Times Square on New Year’s Eve – multiply that energy by ten! The unity was stunning. There were people from every state, every country and every race to celebrate our new president. When President Obama spoke, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop.”

Olivia Yang ’09 continued, “The inauguration was everything I expected. But what shocked me the most was the diversity.

There were people from different countries there to support our new president. I thought to myself, when was the last time people were so united for one cause? It made me realize that no matter how divided we seem to be, we stand united ready to rebuild our country.”

spirituality Ash Wednesday

The sacred season of Lent began on February 25 and ashes were distributed as part of our school-wide Prayer Service. Every Friday in Lent at Holy Angels is a day of fasting.

We invite our school community to fast in solidarity with those who suffer from poverty and hunger in our global family. We will again be participating in the Catholic Relief Services’ “Operation Rice Bowl.” For 34 years, Operation Rice Bowl has called participants to pray with their families and faith communities; fast in solidarity with those who hunger; learn about our global community and the challenges of poverty overseas; and give sacrificial contributions to those in need.

Junior Retreat

“Follow the Star In Your Heart” was the theme of the Junior retreat, which focused on the qualities of effective leadership viewed through the lens of the Charism of the School Sisters of Notre Dame. The students watched skits presenting various “scenes” in the life of Mother Caroline, the first General Superior of the SSNDs in the US. They heard witness talks from their fellow students demonstrating many of those same qualities of leadership shown by Mother Caroline and had the opportunity to share their own stories with one another.

THE ARTS Seniors Margaret Dudasik and Bernadette Flanagan have released a CD of traditional Irish music with their band, Girsa. This all-girl band, whose name means “young girls” in Irish, has been playing together for many years, and had a busy St. Patrick’s Day season performing at parties, pubs, and festivals.

Margaret is a violinist/vocalist and Bernadette plays piano and bodhran. More news and information on the band and CD is available on the Girsa website, girsamusic.com.

LEADERSHIP Marie Minasi represented the state of New Jersey at the 2008 National Federation of State High School Association’s National Student Leadership Conference.

HELPING HANDS Junior Claire Lavers will be heading to India in May on an Operation Smile mission. Senior Ysabel Diaz departed for her mission in Jordan on March 3rd.

ATHLETICS Three of our Fencers competed in the Junior Olympics in Albuquerque, NM. Team Captain, senior Kathryn Palazzoto entered in Junior Women’s Sabre and placed 24th out of 100. Foil Co-Captain, junior Jackie Heath placed 79th out of 161 in Cadet Women’s Foil. Junior Ashley Cha placed 58th out of 150 in Junior Women’s Epee.

[ ] Nancy Schneberger’s Creative Writing class recently presented their prose to a captivated audience at Barnes & Noble in Paramus, NJ. This is the 11th year that the class has read their works publicly.

Senior Christie Fredericks was honored on February 1st at the “New Jersey Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day”.

She was selected as our outstanding athlete and attended a brunch at Seton Hall University, where she was honored along with other athletes from around the state. Christie has played Varsity Basketball and Lacrosse for four years at Holy Angels, and captains both teams this year. Selected as last year’s North New Jersey Lacrosse Player of the year, she holds the current Bergen County Scoring record with 220 career goals. Christie has committed to playing for Cornell University next year.

orn in Seoul, Korea, Ga-Yeon (Ellen) Lee ’10 began violin lessons at age four. She currently studies in the Pre-College Division at Julliard where she has served as the concertmaster for

the Pre-College Symphony.

Ellen’s musical resumé is impressive. She has had international experiences as a soloist with many orchestras, such as the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra and the University of Cincinnati Orchestra. She has won competitions such as the Stravinsky Violin Concerto Competition at the Aspen Music Festival and the Dayton Philharmonic Violin Solo Competition.

Ellen has spent the past six summers at the Aspen Music Festival and School.

She says, “I’m just so thankful to the generous foundation, to my teachers, and for my parents who support me in everything I do.”

Angel represents AHA at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Observance The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Observance Committee of Bergen County announced that Stephanie Dawkins ’09 had received the Youth Certificate of Merit. She was one of 33 students to attend a ceremony on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the Central Unitarian Church in Paramus. Students were recognized for their contributions and achievements that exemplify the ideals of Dr. King. Stephanie shared, “I felt honored to be among all the people who have received awards and merits. Not only did these people speak about Martin Luther King Jr., but also about the first African-American president.” In attendance at the ceremony were Dr. James Bell and Dr. Clinton Lacey from the Burns Institute in San Francisco. At a recent NHS assembly, Stephanie shared with the student body, “Martin Luther King’s life was taken away but they couldn’t take away his dream or his spirit. He still lives in the hearts of many. Dr. King fought for equality for all and the day that all Americans will come together as one; the day that we can look past skin color and see people for who they really are, regardless of race.”

Ellen’s future plans will include music, but she is unsure which path she will choose. She wants to continue to do her best both academically and musically so that she has many options available.

Ellen also enjoys playing the piano and viola. She spends 2-3 hours a day on her violin, but finds that when there are tests to study for, her time is cut to 1-2 hours. When she is not focused on her school work, her studies at Julliard or the necessary everyday practice, she finds time to perform at local nursing homes and churches. Ellen says, “In my opinion, music is the most amazing way you can share your feelings with someone. It’s like a common language for all. I hope that through my music, I can bring more peace to the world.

I believe that music is powerful and can move a mind.”

oly Angels has offered many travel and touring programs over the years, but did you know that AHA also has a study abroad program in Salzburg, Austria? Initiated in 2004 by English Department Chair Nancy Schneberger, the program is held every other year during the month of July.

There were opportunities for travel, and two weekends were spent exploring the beautiful Austrian Lake District, the Bavarian countryside and such famous sites as Neuschwanstein Castle (the model for Disneyland’s castle), Oberammergau (known for its woodcarving and the Passion Play held every ten years) and historic memorials such as the area of Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest and the on site war museum. “We see the best and worst of the culture’s history, and learn important lessons about our own humanity,” says Schneberger.

“My own study abroad experiences in England, Ireland and Austria were life changing, and I wanted to extend that transformative opportunity to Holy Angels students,” says Schneberger. “Study abroad on a high school level is rare, but our students are mature enough to be excellent ambassadors abroad for our school and our country.”

One exciting opportunity to connect with Holy Angels’ history is a tradition during each program, when the class visits the Motherhouse of the School Sisters of Notre Dame during a day trip to Munich, and prays at the tomb of the foundress, Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger. According to Apollonia Colacicco ‘09, “When we visited the Motherhouse, many of the things we learned about the SSNDs became more meaningful and affected me in a more personal way.”

Students in the course Introduction to the Humanities: Salzburg’s Baroque Treasures, attend class every day from 8am to noon at the Grodiger Haupschule, then meet in downtown Salzburg after lunch for several hours of “the classroom without walls,” studying music, art and architecture at

the many museums, churches, concert halls and castles in the area. Students write papers and take tests, earning a semester’s credit for successful completion of the course. This year, the class was team taught by Schneberger and History Department Chair Gail Fair, who took a Graduate course in History in the 2004 University program in Salzburg.

“It was the quality of the Salzburg program that made me want to teach in Austria,” says Fair. “This is the perfect opportunity for our students to live our school’s philosophy of reaching into the global community.”

On the final day of classes, an awards ceremony was held, and some of the students took the opportunity to thank their host families and teachers by performing a skit based on the Sound of Music’s “Goodbye, Farewell.”

Since the film was set in Salzburg and the girls were familiar with so many of its settings, the song was the perfect choice.

“The Salzburg study abroad program is a rare find,” says participant Talin Baghdadlian ‘09, whose sister, Zarig ‘08, was a student in the 2006 program.“It combines the chance to get to know fellow students and teachers with the incredible opportunity to become intimate with another part of the world. We didn’t only visit and study for 31/2 weeks, we lived among the locals, learning about their culture from them directly. It was an amazing experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything!”

During their stay, most of the students lived on a farm in the rural village of Grodig outside the city of Salzburg, where they experienced the life of the Austrian people firsthand. An exciting moment was when baby chickens and kittens were born, which the girls rapidly named (one memorable kitten was called “Runt”). INDUCTEE SUE LIDDY REACHES MILESTONE

The AHA Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes Coach Sue Liddy for her dedication to the Holy Angels’ athletic program where she exemplifies excellence in character, sportsmanship and citizenship.

Susan Liddy graduated from Upper Iowa University where she played and served as captain of the basketball and softball teams. She also played volleyball for one year during her college career. Upon returning to New Jersey, Liddy accepted the position of Physical Education teacher and coach at Holy Angels. She received her Master’s degree in Physical Education with a specialization in Human Performance from Montclair State College.

In 1988, Liddy was named Athletic Director and for 13 years she served simultaneously as Athletic Director, Chairperson of the Physical Education department and full-time teacher.

Liddy has been a pioneer in women’s athletics in Bergen County. During her tenure, the athletic program at AHA has grown from three sports to twelve, with 26 teams. For 34 years, she has led the AHA Basketball team to nine League Championships, five County Championships and the State Final in 1992.

Reaching the milestone 600th win as basketball coach not only made AHA history, but secures a place for Liddy in an elite group of coaches in North Jersey.

She recently shared with the Bergen Record, “I would never have believed in a hundred years when I took this Principal Jennifer Moran, fellow inductee Muriel Mack Burns ’32, Liddy, job that I’d be AHA President S. Dr. Susan Craig Scott ’66 Renowned Plastic Surgeon “Nobody, not even the rain, has such small hands.” –E.E. Cummings The yearbook editor placed the above quote below Susan’s picture in the 1966 yearbook. Little did she know how prophetic those words would be in predicting how her hands and that of others would play such a major role in her life. Susan has used her hands in reconstructing, reattaching and most importantly healing others.

From a very young age, Susan had wanted to attend the Academy.

She says “The cost of tuition for my parents at the time was prohibitive. They were raising four children with the goal of a Catholic education for all of us, not unlike many families today. I was very fortunate to be a good student and a great tester, and I won a scholarship to Holy Angels; the news of that award was perhaps the happiest day of my young life.”

In 1962, Susan began her AHA career and was never disappointed in her decision. She, like many of her classmates, was very involved in school life. She worked on the yearbook and Chips, acted in several drama productions, played both basketball and field hockey and was a member of the NHS. Susan shares, “The work was hard but mastering so many new and interesting things was very satisfying.” She spent the first three years on the campus in Fort Lee and has fond memories of her time there. “I remember our candlelight caroling ceremony around the rotunda at the old school, parents and families standing below and girls arrayed at the railing on the different levels in the pitch dark followed by the warm glow of our candles. I remember English with S. Norice, Physics and Geometry with S. Vitoline, and the fields of the Fort Lee campus. What a full, rich life we led, full of opportunity and promise – and it is, I think, for this that I am most grateful.”

In the fall of 1965, Susan and her classmates began their senior year on the new campus in Demarest. “I remember our brand new language lab in our first (and my last) year in Demarest, with S. Margarette’s French rapid-fire Q and A, leaving us both

open-mouthed in awe and terrified that one of the Q’s would be directed at us.” In June, Susan, with an AHA diploma in hand, embarked on her journey to Princeton University. She graduated from Princeton University in 1970 with a BA in East Asian Studies and in 1974 she received a Doctorate in Medicine from Columbia University. She began her career as an intern, resident and Chief resident at Roosevelt Hospital in New York and went on to a residency in plastic surgery at the Institute for Reconstructive Plastic Surgery in New York. She is currently a renowned specialist and is an attending surgeon in New York City at Lenox Hill Hospital, Hospital for Joint Diseases, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York University Hospital Center and for the Department of Veterans Affairs. Susan serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery specializing in Plastic Surgery at New York University School of Medicine. She served as the team physician for the New York Liberty basketball team from 1996–2006, and for the USA Basketball Women’s Olympic Team in 2004.

In 1983 Susan married W. Norman Scott, M.D. and they have three children: Eric, William and Kelly.

She was a member of the Princeton Board of Trustees from 1991–1995 and has continued to serve as a panelist since 1994 for the Alumni Council of Princeton University.

Recently, Susan was asked and accepted to serve on the AHA Board of Trustees. “I feel that in a way I have a chance to relive those happy years again, to try to understand how our young women are handling those important transition years, and to contribute to AHA’s continuing excellence. How fortunate for me. These next decades have unique challenges; this is true of every age. AHA taught me to seize every opportunity to make the most of my life, and I want our girls to continue to do the same. This is a privilege that I embrace with Holy Angels. I look forward to it.” It is with great pleasure that we call Susan a soaring angel!

t is my pleasure and honor to address you as the newly appointed President of the Holy Angels Alumnae Association. With one daughter who joined the ranks of AHA alumnae last year and another who begins her angelic journey in September, I have been fortunate to again witness all that the Academy has to offer. Not only have I been able to look back and recall all that it has done for me, I continue to be impressed by how AHA prepares and equips our newest Angels for the challenges they will face in life.

The value of an AHA education has not only endured, but increased with time. This is a rarity in today’s world. Together, as alumnae who share this common value, we can be of tremendous support to one another as well as to those young women just embarking on their journey. So regardless of whether you attended the Fort Lee campus or the halls of Demarest, or graduated in 1959 or 2009, we are all connected by this lifelong bond.

Please make every effort to attend this year’s Alumnae Weekend, scheduled for October 23rd and 24th. We will be having classroom tours on Friday 10/23 and our annual Mass and reunion gala dinner on Saturday 10/24. No matter how long it has been since your last visit, it’s time to come back and celebrate the gift that we all share. I look forward to reconnecting, reminiscing, and rehashing our “glory days”.

Kathleen Holland Sheridan ’66 ran into fellow angels Veronica Polce ’09 and Victoria Lorenzo ’09 the day after Christmas as the three volunteered at POTS (Part of the Solution), a social service organization located in the

Mary Dougherty ’77 decided she would turn 50 in style – and with as many of her friends and family around her as possible. “The Mary Dougherty Birthday Bash Cruise”, a five-day, Christmas week cruise from Port Canaveral, FL to the Bahamas, took off on Dec. 29, with a total of 23 people assembled. Gabrielle Visser Trumbull ’87 was just cast in the off-off-Broadway production of a new musical, “Hell’s Kitchen, the Musical”.

The show ran from February 11th to March 8th at the Hudson Guild Theatre in Manhattan. In January 2008, Gabrielle starred as Sarah Brown in “Guys and Dolls” with the Key West Pops and then in the spring, she starred as Vicki Nichols in “The Full Monty” at the Media Theater for the Performing Arts in Media, PA. She is in the process of recording her first album, which she hopes to release in time for her 40th birthday.

Jennifer Rodriguez ’04 and Elysa Downey-Zayas ’04 happened to be in Capri, Italy on the same exact day this past summer! Both were only there for about a 6 hour window, but somehow walked into each other. Elysa says “It is amazing how the world truly is so small when we have these lifetime connections with angels.

I think that events like these chance meetings can really make you appreciate the greater forces at work in all of our lives.”

’06 Jennifer Marsico ’03 graduated summa cum laude from Drew University in May 2007, with specialized honors in Political Science. In August 2008, she obtained an M.A. in American Government from Georgetown University. During the spring and summer semesters, she interned in the office of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at the American Enterprise Institute for Public Policy Research.

Jennifer is now employed as a research assistant in AEI’s Political Corner, researching and writing on election reform and the current political climate.

In November, she published an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal entitled “This Election Has Not ‘Realigned’ the Country,” arguing that the U.S. had not experienced a shift in its dominant ideology as a result of the 2008 election. Jennifer appeared as a guest on Fox News’ national morning program Fox and Friends to discuss her op-ed.

Angela Annecchino ’06 is a junior at the University of Maryland studying Secondary Art Education, a double major. She recently led a team to win a mural commission with the Prince George’s County Art in Public Places program.

The team recreated a wall of the former District Heights firehouse. Krista Bacci ’06 is making her mark on the Sacred Heart University campus. She is the captain of the university’s fencing team for 2008-09 and is in her third season as a starter. Over the past two seasons, she has established herself as one of the elite collegiate saber fencers and represented the Pioneers at the NCAA championship last season. A two-time 1st Team All-Northeast Intercollegiate Fencing selection, she led the SHU saber squad to the conference tournament saber championship in 2007-08. Cathleen Carris ’06 is spending her junior year at Loyola in Baltimore studying abroad in Alcala de Henares, Spain and Santiago de Chile. She is a History & Spanish major. Malissa Gallini ’06, a cadet at West Point, continues to thrive in Division I Volleyball while maintaining Dean’s List status. She is

currently studying the Russian language abroad at the University of Voronezh. Prior to this semester, she was on assignment shadowing platoon leaders at Guantanamo.

Upon her return from Russia, she will be traveling to our capitol where she will serve as an intern in the office of Congressional Budget and Finance Committee. Caroline Graham ’06 is an intern in the Boston office of Senator Edward M. Kennedy.

She is a junior majoring in Political Science at the College of the Holy Cross. Maya Saoud ’06 was elected Secretary of the Melkite Association of Young Adults, the national group serving Melkite Catholics in America ages 18-26. She recently accepted a paid internship with Girls Learn International, a nonprofit service-learning group, where American high school girls are partnered with girls in countries that have traditionally been denied education.

She is currently a Junior at Fordham University, where she is the Co-President of the Middle Eastern Students’ Association and Co-Chair of Fordham Advocates Cultural Enrichment.

Tayler Wejnert ’07, a sophomore at Colgate University, was recently named the women’s basketball Patriot League Player of the Week. Since starting mid-season, she has scored a total of 63 points, including 61 points in the Raiders’ last three games.

Mary Cunning ’08, a freshman at Lafayette College, was one of six players on the women’s volleyball team to be named to the 2008 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible, a student-athlete must earn a 3.20 GPA average in the fall semester and be awarded a varsity letter in one of the League’s seven fall championship sports.

There are almost 150 Angels that call the state of California home. Two regional groups will be formed for Angels living in the state of California – one in the southern part of the state and one in the north.

On Sunday, October 12, 2008 a meeting was held in San Diego. We especially want to thank our hostess Virginia Kiernan Peerbolte ’82 and her family, and also Mary Lou Sciarrillo ’63, for their warm hospitality. A gathering was held in San Francisco on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 at the Holding Company Restaurant. At both events, the conversation overflowed with fond memories of the days spent in Fort Lee and Demarest.

There are over 200 angels who live year-round in the state of Florida. We will be creating two regional groups – one on the East coast and one on the West.

Two meetings took place in Pompano Beach on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. In the afternoon, we met at the Oceanside and we would like to thank our gracious hostess, Terry Gedalye Schreiber ’73, for her generosity and tour of the new condo complex. In the evening, a group gathered at Houston’s restaurant for dinner. Yearbooks were exchanged across the table along with many laughs. On Thursday, November 20, 2008 a group met in the afternoon in New Port Richey. Heartfelt thanks to our hostess Georgette Bergeron Ingraham ’68 for her warm hospitality. Many in this group quickly came to realize that they are neighbors in the same town and never knew it!
