ABSTRACT

Statement of the Problem: This study focuses on the students’ perceptions and practices on dealing with waste.

Waste poses a threat to public health and the environment and humans produce an additional stream of product residues that would overwhelm the potential of natural recycling processes in order to reduce their effect on our aesthetics, safety, or the environment. The researchers had only one research subject and conducted their research in Asian College of Technology – Integrated School, Bulacao, Talisay City, Cebu The purpose of this study is to identify the common practice and perception of students and to accentuate the needs of the people.

Methodology: This study has made use of the quantitative and qualitative approach of research for data collection. The data was gathered through survey questionnaires. Other than that, the researchers used survey questionnaires.

Findings: As the researchers already gathered the data from the survey questionnaire, the results had proved that segregating and recycling are the ways that the students practice in order to properly manage their waste and the importance of waste

management is because it

avoids environmental problems and could be one of the

chances for us to greatly survive in the future.

CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Rationale Environment is everything that is around us. It can be living (biotic) or nonliving (abiotic) things. It includes physical, chemical and other natural forces. Living things live in their environment. They constantly interact with it and adapt themselves to conditions in their environment. In the environment there are different interactions between animals, plants, soil, water, and other living and nonliving things. Living on earth, the living things are the protectors of the planet and it is important that the people must take care of the environment. Yet environmental problems are still a global concern.

It has no boundary. Around the world; efforts are being made to make people be aware about environmental protection. One of the main causes of environmental degradation is improper management in the disposal of solid waste. In many parts of the world, it is a major cause of pollution and disease outbreak. There is no permanent solution to environmental issues, only by proper consideration and practice, we can reduce and monitor waste generation.

Environmental problems that are caused by improper waste disposal have already been tackled by the government as well as individual communities. However, for the past decades, our country is still dealing with the same problem regarding our environment, as if all those environmental movements have become cliché and of no use or impact. Waste management is important because it helps maintain the cleanliness of the whole world. it needs to be practiced because the entire population's health and protection depend on it.

In accordance with this, academic institutions nowadays are setting programs to help spread awareness about proper waste management as well as discipline to Filipino students. Through this, many young minds were awoken by the environmental alarms that should be given notice because of the problems that they’re facing these days. The major problems affecting solid waste management are unscientific treatment, improper collection of waste, and ethical problems. This turn leads to hazards like environmental degradation, water,pollution, and air pollution.

Waste poses a threat to public health and the environment if it is not stored, collected, and disposed of properly. Living things take raw materials and excrete waste that other living organisms reuse. Nevertheless, humans produce an additional stream of product residues that would overwhelm the potential of natural recycling processes in order to reduce their effect on our aesthetics, safety, or the environment.

The researchers conducted this study because they want to accentuate the need of the people to act, now that they’re experiencing the agony of the earth. There are a lot of health hazards, when the people won’t dispose of their waste properly.

Having discipline within ourselves begins at home. That’s why the researchers chose this study because it has been observed that other people seemed to be careless around the surroundings. Proper waste management is most important in this matter for it is a huge deal especially in our lives today.

The view of the students in waste management affects everything, for it is where everything and certain things starts. The way they see things, leads them to proper decision making and learning. It is important that they would be aware of everything that

is going on in the world so they would have better thinking in certain things, especially when dealing with waste.

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Waste management comes with particular practices and this includes segregating,burning,composting and recycling. These four practices are applied by many students in asian colleges of technology. The students' perception on waste management matters personally and socially.

First of all personally because, everything starts with themselves. The students' self discipline can make the students independent and not too reliable to others.

The students' perception on waste management personally is important and how the students set their minds to certain things. Such as this case which is practicing proper waste management.If the students cannot apply it to themselves then how can the students make the other individual apply proper waste management.

It is important for key stakeholders to be aware of a city's waste management activities and have a strong understanding of the benefits of proper solid waste management. Public participation in awareness programs which results in segregation at point source and reduction of waste.Waste management is the process of treating solid wastes and offers a variety of solutions for recycling items that don't belong to trash.

Those groups include source reduction and reuse, animal feeding, recycling, composting, fermentation, landfills, incineration and land application.Attitude of a person can reflect on how they treat our environment. If your attitude towards the environment is very good and you treat it well of course the results will be extremely good. If you treat it really badly and you're just polluting the area the results are very horrible.Proper segregating is very helpful because segregating the trash like cans plastic

and more, it is important that the dirt won't be mixed up. So that it is organized to manage our wasteBurning is one of the ways to get rid of trash but it has both negative and positive effects. by burning, you can get rid of the trashes/waste in a blink of an eye it doesn't cause any hassle

Statement of the Problem

This research study aims to know the different practices and perceptions of the students towards waste management.

Significance of the study

The findings of the study will be beneficial to all the living things in the planet, especially the people, the animals, and the plants, because in this study the researchers will be able to know the student’s ways or perception of waste management, not just in their homes but also to the society. This study could also give awareness to the people around the globe, the impact of improper waste disposal practices. This study was conducted to obtain baseline information about waste management practices among children at Asian College of Technology – Integrated School.

This study furthermore, gives benefits to the students, as the way they see things affect them in many ways that is why it is important that they should be aware of proper waste management. And to the teachers or school staff, this study would benefit them in a way that they would know the perception of the students in waste management and how important it is to teach students from a young age, the proper management of waste as they grow up to be mindful and crucial around their surroundings. To the future researchers, this study will guide them to create new hypotheses that the researchers of this study were not able to explore. More than the benefits that this study will provide to the future researchers, the people including teachers, children, teenagers, adults, and etc.

The results of this study will hopefully help encourage other people to be more mindful with their trash and to the environment.

Scope and Limitations This study only focuses on the perception of the students in management of the waste in their society and homes but only four out of many ways in waste management are focused, which are segregating, composting, burning of trash and recycling. The scope area of the study is Asian College of Technology – Integrated School. The limitation of the researchers is to only take information from the environment they are working with. The main source of data will be a survey questionnaire, which will be prepared by the researchers and only a number of students, specifically 30 students will be the respondents of our survey. The data will be statistically treated by the use of descriptives such as frequency, percentage, and graphical analysis. The researchers will only achieve information about the people, who are willing to do what the study tells. The study does not intend to go far beyond the goals or objectives of this study.

Definition of Terms

The terms are theoretically and objectively defined as follow: Waste Management - The activities and actions required to manage waste from its inception to its final disposal. This includes the collection, transport, treatment and disposal of waste, together with monitoring and regulation of the waste management process. In this study, it is the learning of managing the waste properly so the people would learn and it would be easy to adapt by other individuals.

Students - A person enrolled in a school or other educational institution who attends classes. In this study, an individual who goes to school and is the subject of this research, Society – The aggregate of people living together in a more or less ordered community. It is also where the students deal with their waste, Personal - Of, relating to, or coming as from a particular person or individual. In this study, is a perspective of the subject.

Burning - Cause to be destroyed by fire. In this study, it is one of the ways of managing waste and it is to set fire on something.

Segregating – In this study, it is a process of separating the trash.

Recycling - The action or process of converting waste into reusable material.

Composting - Make (vegetable matter or manure) into compost. In this study, it is the process of breaking down organic matter into simpler substances.

CHAPTER 2 REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND RELATED STUDIES

This chapter presents the related literature and studies after the thorough and in-depth search done by the researchers.

Nowadays, the people are suffering from environmental dilemmas such as global warming, flash floods, etc. Improper waste disposal is the disposal of waste in a way that has negative consequences for the environment, disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems.

Waste management also refers to the practice of collecting and disposing of and managing various waste materials. It is important to observe sustainability in this aspect so that every bit of waste can be managed in an efficient manner rather than just dumping it all in landfills.

One of the causes of this problem is the misbehavior of the people towards waste management. Some people are reckless in throwing their garbage. They do not think of the possible results of their actions on the environment as well as on health. The people have to take waste management seriously if they want the future generations to have necessary resources. Additionally, inefficient waste management will degrade our land, water, and air and can cause a huge amount of financial burden to current, and future generations. Wastes can be a threat to the public health and the environment if it is not stored, collected and disposed properly. This study investigates waste practices, waste disposal, and perceptions about waste and health in a community.

According to Rhotak Haryana, environmental awareness is concerned towards environment or environmental problems. In the past two decades, the environment has attracted the attention of decision makers, scientists and even laymen in many parts of the world. They are becoming increasingly conscious of issues such as floods, scarcity of fuel, firewood, pollution of air and water, problems of hazardous chemicals and radiation, depletion of natural resources. People are now aware of the need to protect the natural environmental resources of air, water, soil and plant life that constitute the natural capital on which man depends. The environmental issues are important because the absence of their solutions is more horrible. Unless environmental issues are not solved or not taken care of the coming generations may find earth worth not living. The need of the planet and the needs of the person have become one.

Environmental attitude, a learned predisposition to respond consistently in a favorable or unfavorable manner with respect to the environment (Uitto, 2004).

Environment constitutes a very important part of our life. To understand life without studying the impact of the environment is simply impossible. The need to protect the environment can be ignored only at our peril. We use environmental resources in our day to day life. These resources are renewable and nonrenewable. We have to be more cautious in consuming non-renewable resources. All human activities have an impact on the environment. But in the last two centuries or so, the human influence on the environment has increased manifold due to the rapid population of the environment including all living and nonliving objects.

The people live in the environment and use the environmental resources like air, land and water to meet their needs. Development also means meeting the needs of the

people. While meeting the ever growing needs, they put pressure on the environment.

When the pressure exceeds the carrying capacity of the environment to repair or replace itself, it creates a serious problem of environmental degradation. If they use any environmental resource such as ground water beyond its limit of replacement, we may lose it forever. Therefore, there is a need to create ‘awareness’ about environmental protection.

While efforts are being made at the national and international level to protect our environment, it is also the responsibility of every citizen to use our environmental resources with care and protect them from degradation.

In this lesson we will discuss the nature and causes of environmental degradation, and the value of protection of the environment. Polluted world puts the human race at risk by undermining their life on planet earth.. Boundaries of any nation cannot limit these environmental problems to a particular country and region, but its impact is global one. This large-scale environmental degradation has caused a global concern about conservation and protection.

It is education which can make the human being conscious and knowledgeable about the environment and environmental problems. Moreover, awareness is essential for the action. The main purpose of environmental education in schools is to acquaint and sensitize the young minds to the Environmental problems and concerns, to inculcate in them healthy personal and social attitude and behavior towards environment.

Thus, students must have awareness about the environment and the problems associated with it so that they can play their role very effectively. The teacher should be aware of the environmental education aspects only then he can make the future generation aware of

the environmental problems and their solutions. Taking into consideration this situation, the investigators felt a need to conduct a study to know about the environmental awareness of secondary school teachers in relation to residential background. Subject specialization and teaching experience so that necessary actions could be taken up to come forward with prolific results for enhancing the efficacy of the content provided to them as well as sustain their inner urge for desirable actions. Hence it is necessary to know how far the school students are aware about the environment and environmental problems.

Solid waste management issue is the biggest challenge to the authorities of both small and large cities’ in developing countries. This is mainly due to the increasing generation of such solid waste and the burden posed on the municipal budget.

In addition to the high costs, the solid waste management is associated with a lack of understanding over different factors that affect the entire handling system. An analysis of literature and reports related to waste management in developing countries, showed that few articles supplied quantitative information. The objective of the mentioned studies was to determine the stakeholders’ action/behavior that have a role in the solid waste management and to analyze different factors that affect the system.

It has been reported that improper bin collection practices, collection, transfer and/or transport systems have great effect on the characteristics of the solid wastes.

Besides, the poor route of planning, lack of information concerning the collection schedule, number of vehicles for solid waste collection and poor roads and insufficient infrastructure can also affect the characteristics of the solid wastes. The effective ways and affordable waste collection services were studied and reported by M Sharholy, 2008.

To organize the informal sector and promote micro-enterprises. Knowledge of treatment by authorities is one of the important factors affecting the handling of solid waste. Factors influencing household waste disposal were analyzed by Tadesse et al, 2008. Their results indicated that the supply of waste facilities significantly affects the choice of waste disposal. They reported that the inadequate supply of waste containers as well as the longer distance of transporting these containers increases the possibility of dumping such wastes in open areas and roadsides along the trip. According to Pokhrel and Viraraghavan, 2005, insufficient financial resources, absence of legislation, well equipped, and engineered landfills all contribute to the limitation of solid waste safe disposal.

One of the major environmental problems is the collection, management and disposal of the MSW in the urban areas. Lack of MSW management and disposal is leading to significant environmental problems. This includes soil, air water, and aesthetic pollution. Such environmental problems are associated with human health disorder, due to the increase in greenhouse gas emissions. The waste streams originating from industrial sources are different from the hazardous substances in household waste. The household hazardous wastes (HHW) are disposed of in landfills along with general household waste (HW). The amounts, quality and significance of such disposal are poorly understood. It is, generally, assumed that the amount of HHW’s are small, thus, risks of disposal are negligible. Nevertheless, the separate disposal of industrial, MSW, and other wastes raises the importance of the toxic and hazardous element contained in such wastes. There are great concerns about the presence of several chemicals in household products. The consequences and the impact to the environment resulted from the disposal

of HHW are also of concern. According to Abdel-Shafy, H. I., & Mansour, M. S. , 2018, the disposal of such HHW to landfill should, therefore, cope with the current legislation in order to decrease the risk to the environment.

Globally, millions of tons of municipal solid waste are generated every day.

Urban waste management is drawing increasing attention, as it can easily be observed that too much garbage is lying uncollected in the streets, causing inconvenience, environmental pollution, and posing a public health risk. Proper waste management is a public benefit and obligation. Improper waste disposal by one individual affects the entire citizenry, so, as a policy, countries have tasked every individual, establishment or institution to contribute significantly to the process of keeping their communities and environment clean (Yoada, R. M., Chirawurah, D., & Adongo, P. B. (2014)).

According to Bai, R., & Sutanto, M., 2002, the hierarchy of solid waste management is waste minimization (reduce, reuse and recycle or so-called 3 Rs), followed by incineration and landfill. As land is extremely scarce and only one newly constructed offshore landfill site is available, solid waste incineration has been identified as the most preferred disposal method. Waste minimization, the utilization of incineration ashes, and industrial waste management are regarded to be the major challenges in the future.

The three R's – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away. They conserve natural resources, landfill space and energy. Reducing, reusing and recycling makes economical and environmental sense by saving land and money communities must otherwise use to dispose of waste in landfills.

The siting of a new landfill has become increasingly difficult and more expensive due to

environmental regulations and public opposition. Moreover, waste reduction and recycling are very powerful tools to reduce CO2 emissions. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), we could cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 354 million metric tons annually just by reducing our waste and recycling more, which would help improve air quality and mitigate climate change. Reduce, the best way to manage waste is to avoid it in the first place.

This can be done by buying products in bulk, which usually cost less per ounce, removing your name from junk mail lists, avoiding over-packaged goods, which are harder to recycle and tend to cost more due to the extra packaging, avoiding disposable goods, such as plastic bags, cups, napkins, razors, and lighters, using cloth napkins instead of paper napkins and much more. Reuse, many items have the potential to be used over and over for various purposes. Sometimes it takes creativity and other times, determination. Determination to dispose of the idea of disposability and make the most of what you have by giving your items new meaning and life, which can save you money, especially over time, instill more value into your values and reduce the flow of waste traversing the globe and the harmful trails that follow.

Recycle what you can’t refuse, reduce or reuse. Recycling is the conversion of waste into reusable material through a series of steps that takes a used material and processes, re-manufactures, and sells it as a new product. Recycling is essential to improving the economy and conserving the environment. According to the EPA, "Recycling protects and expands US manufacturing jobs and increases US competitiveness, reduces the need for landfilling and incineration, prevents pollution caused by the manufacturing of products from virgin materials, saves energy, decreases

emissions of greenhouse gasses that contribute to global climate change, conserves natural resources such as timber, water, and minerals and helps sustain the environment for future generations."

The only way to minimize the amount of waste generated by the households is through increased awareness on waste segregation and composting. And students’ awareness about environmental problems and solutions can be increased through education. The particular skills and knowledge gained from environmental education would help in changing human behavior towards the environment. Students with some knowledge and skills on environmental education are more motivated to take part in environmental protection activities and plans thus would generate new ideas for the solution of environmental problems. Sharing new information from their activities with families, other adults, and the community probably will have some positive implications on solid waste management practices.

Although there is a number of literature on solid waste management in terms of intergenerational influence and socialization processes, the practical impacts of environmental education have somewhat been given little attention. The transfer from attitudes to behavior can also be affected by lifestyle; many people, while professing to “correct” attitudes to the environment, are not ready to change their lifestyle in ways that might mean sacrificing certain forms of leisure and comfort for the sake of the environment. Other study has also found a weak and inconsistent relationship between environmental attitudes and behavior; usually attributable to a reluctance to give up the comforts of modern life.

This answers the question as to why in certain circumstances individuals with acquired knowledge act on that knowledge to implement changed waste practices, while in other instances, this acquired knowledge does not lead to change. According to Miller and Morris, (1999:74) "there is a commonly held myth that providing individuals or groups with information will lead them to appropriate personal and organizational actions and performance, but this is far from true." According to Pfeffer and Sutton (2000), information and knowledge are 'crucial to performance', but knowledge of an issue is often not sufficient to cause action: "there is only a loose and imperfect relationship between knowing what to do and the ability to act on that knowledge". The inability to transfer knowledge of what needs to be done into action or behavior which is consistent with that knowledge, is referred to as the 'knowing-doing gap' or the 'performance paradox'. While it was believed that the 'knowing-doing gap' was due to a lack of personal knowledge or skills, research conducted suggests that while personal knowledge is important in ensuring action, it is not as important as having management systems and practices in place.

CHAPTER 3 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY Research Design The study is a quantitative and qualitative approach of research for data collection. The quantitative and qualitative approach of the study consists of a survey using a questionnaire and it will determine the practices and perceptions of the students towards waste management.

Research Subject The subject of the researchers is the students from Asian College of Technology Integrated School. Specifically Grade 9 Junior High School students. And there will be exactly 30 students from 2 different sections, who will be the respondents of our survey questions.

Research Environment

The researcher’s study will be conducted at Asian College of Technology Bulacao Campus, 710 Bulacao, Talisay City, Cebu.

Research Instrument The researchers will use different kinds of tools to gather data. It includes the following: 1.) Self-made Questionnaire– The researchers will provide a set of written questions or survey questions, which will be answered by the student respondents. This tool will be used to gather data and to know the perceptions of the students in waste management in different areas and their ways or practices of managing their waste.

Data Gathering Upon conducting this study, the researchers will ensure an approval letter to the principal of the Junior High School Department. The researchers will make survey questionnaires, where the respondents will answer based on their opinions or perceptions and a yes-or-no test that will contain simple, short and straight to the point questions.

After, the researchers will be tallying the answers and will be transforming it into percentage forms. Then, the researchers will be deriving a result of the majority of the respondents’ view on waste management and their practices in terms of dealing with waste.

CHAPTER 4 PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA This chapter talks about the data that has been gathered through the given survey questions that have been answered by the 30 respondents from the Grade 9 level of the Junior High School Department at Asian College of Technology - Integrated School. The researchers in this study began their survey questions, as their data gathering procedure, on Tuesday, January 14, 2020. After, all of the survey questionnaires have been answered and getting all of the data gathered in this study.

A total of 30 out of the 32 students responded to the survey questionnaire. The sex of the respondents was far from similar with, 60% being male and 40% being female. Table 1 shows that 66.7% students in a public place separate their trashes into biodegradable and nonbiodegradable when throwing and 80% of the respondents have knowledge about segregation of waste but only 66.7% segregate their waste and 20% of the respondents does not have knowledge about segregation of waste. On table 2, 33.3% of the students thinks pollution is one of the effects of improper waste disposal, that’s why 83.3% of the respondents does not burn their trashes and 66.7% recycle their waste, and only 16.7% burn their trashes and 33.3% do not recycle their waste. Although only 6.6% of the respondents manage their waste by using food waste as fertilizer, merely 36.7% compost their kitchen waste at home and 63.3% does not.

Table 2, 3 and 4 shows the different perspectives of the students in terms of waste management, its effects and their ways on how they manage it. 40% of the respondents think waste management is important because it can avoid environmental problems. While only 30% and 20% think it is important because it can make our environment clean and it can save us, whereas only 3.3% think that managing waste can make us be more responsible. Nearly half of the respondents, 43.3%, manage their waste by throwing it properly and 20% do the 3 R's, reduce, reuse, recycle, and 16.7% segregate their trash.

“Waste Management is important not just to the environment but this also applies to ones personality because not caring about your surroundings can cause a lot of environmental problems such as flash floods and lots more”

“The effects of improper waste disposal can cause a lot of environmental problems mainly, flash floods, and uncomfortable unpleasant place to live and possibly water problems” Of the 30 respondents, 33.3% say that the effects of improper waste disposal is pollution, mainly, soil, water and air pollution. While nearly 30% say that the other effects of improper waste disposal are disasters. Specifically, flash floods, typhoons, and global warming. Not just that, improper disposal of waste can cause pollution and disasters, it can also harm the environment and may cause illness.

A similar response was confirmed by these quotes: “Soil, water and air pollution can all be result of improper waste disposal and occurs when either of then becomes contaminated with hazardous materials” “The waste would be thrown in ocean waters and putting an effect within the marine life” Table 5 Very

How important is waste management?

In view of the fact that there are many effects of improper waste disposal, more than half of the respondents, 76.7%, think that waste management is very important. While 3.3% thinks that waste management isn’t really important at all. For waste management is important, some of the views of the respondents are; “It’s important because it can reduce global warming and increases the chance of surviving in the future” “It is important because not only it makes the environment clean, it could also save the world's atmosphere” “It is important because it can help us learn and know how to save our mother nature in a simple way” Also, in terms of managing waste, most respondents say they manage their waste by throwing them properly.

“In my own way, I can manage my waste by making sure I put each waste to its proper placement (Biodegradable and non biodegradable)” “In our own way, to manage waste is by recycling the trashes” “Know the 3 Rs and know the proper waste management” Out of 30 respondents, 43.3% can manage their waste by throwing it in the right place and 20% will do the 3 R's, which is to reduce, reuse and recycle. 13.3% is segregating the trash and specifically, separating the plastics from the bottles. Other 6.6% manage their waste through composting and 3.3% says they can manage their waste by eliminating the greenhouse gasses

CHAPTER 5 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, & RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter will provide the summary of findings gathered from data of the following interventions. This chapter will also present the implication, conclusion and recommendation.

Summary of Findings As the researchers already gathered the data from the survey questions that the respondents answered, most answers were really straight to the point. In terms of the subjects’ view of waste management, personally, waste management is a very important matter because it applies to ones’ personality. How they act and how they view things affects everyone in this world. With proper management of waste, socially, it would simply help the world and the chances of everyone surviving in the future. Lastly, the students’ manage their waste through the process of segregating and recycling. As a result, the survey questionnaires show their perceptions and practices on waste management. The students are knowledgeable and aware of the importance of waste management and the effects of improper practices of waste disposal.

Conclusion This research study proves that waste management is essential in many aspects in peoples' lives and the best practices in order to properly execute waste management is segregating and recycling . Their perception or view on waste management also simply affects their practices and actions in dealing with waste.

Recommendations The researchers want to send their recommendations to the students that it is not only important to know the importance of waste management but also with proper work and effort, the deed would be successful. To the teachers and other school staff, they must educate the students properly in order for them to do what is right. Moreover, either segregating, recycling, composting, or burning, everyone must do what is right that could protect, not just the fellow people of this world but also to save the environment and this planet, in order to make this place a better world for everyone who’d be living here in the next generation.
