Even though August wasn’t exactly sizzling, we hope you had a good summer!

This issue of Library Lowdown will help to ease you back into work mode. It will bring you up to speed with the changes that have occurred over the past few months and will remind you of some of the Library services you may have forgotten about.

Induction

Welcome talks Please ask your Liaison Librarian along to any Welcome Talks you may be running for new (or returning students). We only need a minute to pop up and say “hello!” It’s a really good way for the students to see the librarian attached to their course, and to find out who they can contact for help.

Students can just turn up, there’s no need to book.

How To…Study Smarter , the Exchange (Penryn campus) The Liaison team will be running a stall on Friday 18th September to introduce themselves to new students and show how the library can help them study smarter! Please encourage your students to drop by.

2.

Student sessions: tackling ‘hot-spots’

We can help your students with those aspects they often find challenging - around locating, using and organising information.

It could be that you have read one essay too many that only uses web sources or that you’re fed up with hearing “but there is nothing in the library on my topic”.

For students, hot spots could be those crunch moments when they have to find a peer-reviewed journal article, or put together an annotated bibliography.

We understand that theory-based modules often require students to explore, collaborate, consume and create within an increasingly complex information ecosystem. We can tailor sessions to help with developing keywords, searching effectively, judging the value of different kinds of information, thinking critically during research and organising information in the most appropriate way.

Digital Reading lists

Have you got a key chapter you need all your students to read, or a video that explains a concept really well? Why not capture them in one place on a digital reading list? The reading list then sits in ELE for your students to access.

Going digital should put an end to complaints from students about not being able to find the book in the library or incorrectly writing down the URL in a lecture!

Please send a copy of all your core readings to digital@fxplus.ac.uk if you haven’t done so already.

New Library loan periods and fines

Big changes here! After consultation with FXU Students’ Union and the Student Guild at University of Exeter, there will be significant improvements to the loan periods, as well as changes to the fines policy.

Standard loans: Loan Period: Students

6 weeks

Unless recalled then 7 days

Loan Period: Staff + Researchers

365 days

Unless recalled then 7 days

Fines: Students

Yes on recalled items

High Demand items (2 day loans) include videos/ DVDs, vinyl and some books.

As you’ll see staff can borrow standard loan items for 365 days, but will pay fines if they fail to bring back an item that has been requested by another library user.

Info-Perch (Penryn Campus)

During the busy autumn term the team will be running a new drop-in service called Info-Perch. Please refer any students you think would benefit from talking through their research with a liaison librarian.

The Info-Perch runs every Wednesday and Thursday, 2-4pm at the Penryn campus Library. http://library.fxplus.ac.uk/info-perch-0

The Cabinet for the curious… opening up worlds of performance

What is it?

The Cabinet houses a performance research collection that engages curious minds with ideas, methods and theatre arts practices from around the world. It contains a curated collection of books, journals, posters, video and archive material specialising in multi-cultural theatre, dance and experimental performance. It encourages students and staff, arts professionals and enquiring individuals to browse, discover and research a wonderful range of unusual, eclectic and intriguing materials.

The Cabinet is an educational partnership between the Centre for Performance Research and the Academy of Music and Theatre Arts at Falmouth University and is affiliated to the Library and Information Services.

This resource isn’t just for performing arts courses but is relevant and interesting to many different research areas. To give you a flavour, there are book titles such as The Aesthetics of Disturbance; Bastard or Playmate? Awkward Corners; Not Even a Game Any More; The Fate of the Object; Shamanism Colonialism and the Wild Man; The Beauty and Mystery of Well Dressing; An Anthropology of Experience; Kissing the Mask; Blood and Thunder…

Access Open Monday - Friday 10am-4pm (closed for lunch 12.30-1pm) The collection is reference only.

Visitors are welcome at any time during opening hours though booking an appointment in advance is recommended. Lockers are provided for personal belongings.
