1. URL: ​The power of vulnerability | Brené Brown https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCvmsMzlF7o Brene Brown is a professor, lecturer, author and podcast host. Brown has held the Endowed Chair at the University of Houston’s Graduate College of Social Work. In addition, she is a visiting professor in management at McCombs School of Business at the University of Texas. The combination of Brown’s demeanor and message make her talks so powerful. She is not just a motivational speaker who gives “feel-good” lines about love and acceptance; the work she does is based on research and interviews.

2. Summary of the talk: ● Brene starts with connection and explains that connection is why we're here and what gives purpose to our lives. ○ Example 37 things you did awesome but that one thing you “have an opportunity for growth” ○ She relates this to when you ask people about love they’ll tell you about heartbreak etc. and when you ask people about connection they’ll tell you about disconnection. ● Unnamed thing unravels connection and she finds out its shame and fear and what underpins this is excruciating vulnerability and in order to develop a connection you need to be seen and have vulnerability. ● Shame boils down to her 1 year turning to 6 yrs thousands of stories and focus groups and data and she got a handle on shame and wrote a book but something was not okay..if she took the people she interviewed and divided them into people who have a sense of worthiness and strong sense of love and belonging and those people believe they’re worthy of love and belonging the one thing that keeps us out of connection is the fear were not worthy of connection. ● Wholehearted people research group and wondered what the theme was..and she found they all have courage, compassion and connection in common. These folks had the courage to be imperfect and the compassion to be kind and connection as a result of authenticity. ○ Let go of who you should be in order to be who they were..lastly they had vulnerability in common and fully embraced it. She talks about how what makes them vulnerable makes them beautiful and how vulnerability is necessary. ○ Ex. The willingness to say “I love you.” first. Brene meets with a therapist and talks about how she has a vulnerability issue and how vulnerability is the core of shame, fear and worthiness but it's also the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging and brene talks about how she has a problem. It took a year and was a year long street fight and she won and wonders why she struggles with vulnerability. She learned we “numb” vulnerability.

Ex. Having to ask your husband for help because you’re sick and newly married..she explains how this is the world we live in and we numb vulnerability.

Huge cause: most in debt, obese, medicated in U.S. history.

In addition, you can’t selectively numb the bad stuff so when we numb those things we numb joy and gratitude and happiness.

Things to think about why and how we numb. Something we make the uncertain..certain.

■ Ex. Religion “I’m right, you’re wrong.” We also perfect us and our children.

But our job is to understand even our kids are imperfect. We also pretend that our lives don’t have an affect on other people.

Leaves us with this..let ourselves be seen. Deeply seen. Vulnerability seen. Love with our whole hearts even when there's no guarantee. Practice gratitude and joy. Lastly, what Brene believes is more important is believing we are enough.

3. Connections between the talk and our course content: Brene’s Ted Talk talks a lot about your character as a person. In many ways I think this relates to a company’s mission statement. A mission statement is defined as “​a formal summary of the aims and values of a company, organization, or individual.”

An example in a company could be when an employee is willing to make connections with other employees or value something so much about what the company stands for they want to make certain decisions that reflect those values. These people show what they truly care about in the company mentally, and have the willingness to show how much it truly means to them.

In addition to that, employees may choose a certain place to work because of their mission statement. A certain organization may focus on their individual employees or the connectedness more than other organizations and that could be a big thing for many people.

For me, I really want to work at a place where I value what they stand for. For example, Lu Lu Lemon’s mission statement is, “creating components for people to live longer, healthier and more fun lives.” As a person, I value eating healthy, working out and overall enjoying life. I agree with what Lu Lu Lemon truly believes and would love to work there because of this.

Brene’s talk about vulnerability, connectedness and courage also relates to customer loyalty in a way. When a company stays connected to their customers, keeps them updated and gets feedback on how to improve those employees may become loyal to that company because of the connectedness the company is willing to provide.

In addition to that, when customers write feedback and give reviews they are being vulnerable and courageous enough to let the company know what they need to improve on.

Customer loyalty is very important and having the willingness to stay connected with your customers can increase the profit per customer tremendously.

4. Key “take-aways” from the talk: 1) The first key takeaway from this Ted Talk is that “I am enough.” For example, if i were to relate this back to class or course content, sometimes I will spend quite a bit of time on a certain assignment. Brene made me realize that not everything is going to get a perfect score and to recognize when you have put in as much effort as you could and that sometimes enough is enough.

2) The second key takeaway I have from Brown’s talk is connection and compassion are extremely important. It does not take much to be kind to others and being kind goes a long way.

3) Third, don’t be afraid to be courageous. What makes people vulnerable makes them beautiful and how vulnerability is necessary. Brene gives the example, to have the courage and willingness to say I love you FIRST. 4) Fourth, how vulnerability is the core of shame, fear and worthiness but it's also the birthplace of joy, creativity, belonging. Brene talks about how it took a year for her to figure this out but she finally won and figured this out. We “numb” vulnerability. The example Brown gave is having to ask your husband for help because you’re sick and newly married. She explained how this is the world we live in and we numb vulnerability. A huge cause is we are the most we have ever been in debt, obese, medicated in U.S. history. But, she explains how you can’t selectively numb the bad stuff so when we numb those things we numb joy and gratitude and happiness. She made me realize to try to not numb those bad things because I don’t want to take away the birthplace of joy, creativity and belonging.
