Uppsala University Programme: “Master Programme in English” I am Mehreen Altaf, from Pakistan. In the succeeding paragraphs I would briefly introduce myself and my country. Pakistan my country has a rich cultural heritage, loving and hospitable people, an agro-based economy, rich natural resources and a beautiful landscape. However, the recent war on terror has maligned its image in certain ways though Pakistani nation has relentlessly fought against terrorism and itself sustained lot of damage.

I am a graduate of Hajvery University; Lahore, Pakistan with an excellent GPA (3.06/4) in Masters in English. I have always wanted to be an independent and successful woman. From my childhood I was very good at sports, played at school level and college level. This made me a pioneer in my family in the field of sports.

The success in sports made me hardworking and goal oriented person even in my studies. Being active at sports, I was also active in arts and dramatic society in school and college.With this aptitude and background I want to have a career which is skillful, analytical and literary.When I was young, mostly sports stars and women in entertainment industry used to inspire me but as I grew older the areas of interest increased and I got inspired by successful women in fields such as education, politics, writing, social work, bureaucracy and legislation.Women who beat the odds against society norms and achieve their goals inspired me. I aim to be one myself. By this brief introduction now I would like to elaborate the reason for this application. My academic grades and my professional experience over last nine years made me realize that I have the potential and there is a need for further education for my professional and career growth.

Even though I have a Master’s Degree, I have decided to pursue my education further with an international education experience. This need for international education was felt by me when I realized that I am a part of system that has number of flaws. In my country one cannot choose a certain career path. You take what you get is pretty much the situation. Even though I have worked over a span of nine years, majorly I have just been a part of monotonous systems. For a person like me monotony is a killer. Over the years that I have worked I have not felt any room for creativeness and innovation. My desire for the creativity, exploration of new things, writing about experiences in the society, raisings of concerns through writing has increased immensely over the time. Finally I am at a point where I can try and bring about the required change in my life and satisfy my career desires and goals. I did not have the relevant expertise and I did not have the position, where I had the authority to bring about the required change. I needed further

education to enhance my professional skills and expertise. I want my capabilities to be enhanced through this program: “Master Programme in English”.

I started looking for quality education for the accomplishment of my future goals.

That is why I chose Sweden because it has one of the most advanced, valued, recognized and authentic international education system. Then I came across this prestigious institution Uppsala University. I found that a course in English would enhance my fundamental academic knowledge as well as practical knowledge.

Working with British Council, Pakistan for three years enriched me with working experience of an international organization. Working there I realized the flaws in our education system and the dire need for improvement. I worked in the IELTS Team for over a year, there I learnt the importance of IELTS and English as a second language. This course would absolutely help me in my plans that I want to execute in future. I read reviews about the campus and found it exceptionally appropriate as it will cater to all my needs. I read the program is focused on improving thinking as well as practical skills, which is a plus point as many universities focus just on the academic part and not on the experiential part. After that, I proceeded with the application to the program.

I will not only be bringing my years of working experience but my personal experiences as well. How have I been able to perform well at my job, even though our work places are mostly male oriented. I recognize that diversity is very important in life.When I joined British Council, I was the only women on my team with my eight other males team members. Since I was the only women on team, I had to prove myself worthy of the job and I wanted to be taken seriously and prove that I could be as mucha good worker as any of my male colleagues. I not only proved myself with my hard work, commitment, punctuality, sincerity but also proved that I was a better worker in somany ways. I brought female perspective to the table which was missing in the past that helped smooth running of many outsourced projects that had major female involvement. This professional attitude and reputation led me to international trainings that a lot of people had not been able to achieve in many years. When I come to the campus I will also be bringing my cultural knowledge and my experience about education administration and management to the school as well. Sharing it with my peers will give them a learning experience of situations where you have to face limitations and its solutions from a different cultural background. I am sure this will promote globalization but also it will strengthen cultural ties between different people from different countries. I will also be sharing my leadership skills and qualities with my peers along with the handling of difficult situations as I have had such training previously.

To build the economy and industry, the country needs a team of proficient, competent and motivated managers. It is with this missionary spirit that I wish to take up a degree to equip myself with issues concerning language and society, higher education, curriculum development, communication and social development. Another problem which developing countries like Pakistan need to address during the process of growth is equal opportunity. Women empowerment is also a dilemma in my country, even though a lot of women are working but they do not make it to the positions which can make the difference. In all my work experience I was a good achiever because I had masters in English. My masters helped me with my job in customer services; it helped me with University admissions experience. I was able to provide quality services to local and international students. Finally it landed me a job in an International organization.

Still I could not achieve the level or position where I could make the difference.

Now doing my masters from an International University will give me the chance for achieving my goals. The lessons learnt during my studies here would be of great benefit to me, to bring change in the perspective of people for a better operational society, through different international society’s perspective. This will not only help with women empowerment in my country but improve the education system as well. I will be able to play a positive part in the development of society.

However, I want to be realistic in achievement of my goals, the required changes will not occur over night. They will take time and effort and I will strive, till I achieve my goals. If I am able to bring about impact and change few people’s lives,it will bring me immense pleasure and satisfaction and I would have served my purpose.

I wish to get a masters degree which is renowned for teaching practical education.

The courses here will not only teach me about the language and literature but will also introduce new concepts that include Shocking Innovation, Postmodern Literature, Beyond Postmodernism, and Recent Developments in Literary Studies.

When I have grasped all the knowledge, expertise and skills practically provided by this degree, I can come back to my country and serve it by implementing all of it. I am confident that I will be a worthy candidate for employment in government and international organizations to bring about the required change in the education system, once I am done with “Master Programme in English”.

With this I would like to end my motivational letter, with the commitment to be an excellent student at the campus once I get selected for the program.
