Answer the following questions in preparation for a cold-call session.

1. What is the tone of "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" - Is Hawthorne's story scary or amusing? Make sure to have a brief passage from the text ready to explain your answer. The tone of the text is nostalgic it seems as if the narrator is looking back “That very singular man, old Dr. Heidegger, once invited four venerable” Amusing because it shows how people really think and act once they got their youth back.

2. Who is the narrator?. Possibly someone who is telling a story.because he knows all to a certain extent.

3. What does the narrator mean when he says he, "Must be content to bear the stigma of a fiction monger" - Is the narrator distancing himself from the disreputable characters? Why or why not? Yes he’s trying to say what he saw is ludacris and if he tries to say anything to anyone he will be known as someone who chases fairy tales even though he knows what he saw.

4. Why does Dr. Heidegger invite his friends to his chamber? Dr.Heidegger invites his friends to his chamber to test the effects of the water from the fountain of youth. And he knows that they have regrets and have made many mistakes.

5. What warning does the doctor give his guests? “it would be well that, with the experience of a lifetime to direct you, you should draw up a few general rules for your guidance, in passing a second time through the perils of youth. Think what a sin and shame it would be, if, with your peculiar advantages, you should not become patterns of virtue and wisdom to all the young people of the age!” meaning that they should go and fix their mistakes that they have made. He wants them to Learn from their mistakes.

6. The narrator is deliberately unclear about whether the guests are actually restored to youth. What do you think? Support your answer. “I think that the characters are restored to their youth but perhaps only to the people who have also drank the water from the fountain of youth. I think this because it seems as if they can all see each other as they once were but the narrator doesn't seem to think that they are actually restored to their younger selves.”

7. What do you think would have happened if the water had not spilled? They would have tried to drink all of the water.

8. What do the four guests resolve to do at the end of the story? To go find the fountain of youth for themselves

9. The story could be read as an allegory, a story in which people, objects, and events represent abstract qualities. The four guests in "Dr. Heidegger's Experiment" are not realistic, fully developed characters. Instead, they seem more like a representation of ideas. Allegories are written not only to entertain but also to teach lessons or moral principles. Identify an abstract quality or idea that teach of the four guests in the story might represent

12. What do you think was the reason for the experiment and what were his findings?
