1. Describe the greatest power in design according to Aravena?

Aravena believes that the greatest power in design is within the people.

The local people should provide participatory design when building in their local areas.

2. What are the three problems with global urbanization?

The three problems with global urbanization are scale, speed, and scarcity 3. Describe the first case where the power of synthesis was used to solve design problems.

The first case where the power of synthesis was used when they were asked to build housing for 100 families that had been illegally occupying half a hectare in the center of the city of Iquique in the north of Chile. They were only given a $10,000 subsidy that had to buy the land, provide the infrastructure, and build the houses that would be around 40 square meters.

The families were consulted about what time of housing they would prefer to see built.

4. Describe the second case where the power of synthesis was used to solve design problems.

The second case where the power of synthesis was used was when they had design a new working space with the right light, the right temperature, and with the right air.

They decided a traditional office building did not meet this requirement but an open atrium design would had more control over temperature and control of the outside sunlight. The atrium design provided a more open working environment where people where able to see what others are doing from within the building.

1. How do the homes capture the breeze in Bali?

The homes in Bali capture the breeze by being constructed with big curving roofs.

2. Why is bamboo ideal for building material with sustainability in mind?

Bamboo is the ideal building material because it can easily grow on unproductive land. It lives off of rainwater or spring water, and some sunlight. There are over 1,450 species of bamboo that grow across the world and it can typically grow a meter in three days which can create a sustainable forest for timber in just three years.

3. Why was bamboo considered a poor building material in the past?

Bamboo was considered a poor building material in the past because it was almost impossible to reliably protect bamboo from insects, weather and rot.

4. How is designing using bamboo different than using traditional materials?

Designing with bamboo is different from using traditional materials because the bamboo is shaped differently than traditional 2x4 wood construction materials.

Bamboo is hollow, round and may not be completely straight. Bamboo designs have to take this into consideration since they can create a traditional home or building with bamboo.

5. What other unusual building materials can you think of that could be used to increase sustainability?

I think it would be interesting to build structures out of grass or other living plant materials. Recyclable materials like metals, glass and plastics would also create an interesting looking building.
