Review​ Questions 1. What is a solution-based process and why it is important in engineering?

The solution-based process is a series of steps that engineers follow when they are trying to solve a problem and design a solution for something. Problem solving involves very specific steps that must be carefully followed; engineers and students strive to solve problems and identify mistakes. This process is important in engineering, because it allows them to solve problems and identify mistakes, and if a solution does not result from the process, they may iterate the cycle and return to earlier steps. This type of procedure is efficient and provides a logical flow of knowledge and progress.

2. Why are open systems harder to study than closed systems?

Open systems are much harder to study compared to closed systems because they allow a quantity (or series of quantities) to enter or leave the system freely to a significant degree. On the other hand, closed systems are exactly the opposite, they allow nothing to enter or escape.

3. List two things that technological systems have in common.

Two things that all technological systems have in common are: designed to achieve goals, and they use different processes that change inputs into outputs, and can interact to perform complex tasks that no one system can accomplish alone.

4. Explain why advances in technology can actually create more problems for engineers.

A specific example of an advancement of technology creating a larger problem for an engineer is: an electrical system interacting with mechinical and fluid power systems causing manufacturers to become more and more automated.

5. Why is it important that every step in the engineering process be documented?

Documenting is important in the engineering process because: it’s a legal document that can be used to prove the origin of an idea, the effort put in to making it a solution, and the insight to creating a solution

1. Identify an object in your house that contains a physical system and list three questions you could use to define the system.

An object in my house that contains a physical system is my electric fan. My three questions used to define the electric fan are: how does the system understand to how fast to run depending on a certain button, how does the system know how far to rotate back and forth to cool the entire room, and how cool itself down interally when it starts to overheat?

2. Use the law of thermodynamics to explain why an ice cube melts in a cup of hot tea.

When you add ice to hot water, the ice melts and the hot water cools. This is based on the exchange of heat energy from the hot water to the ice. The exchange of energy causes the ice to melt. Once this happens, the cold water that was once ice will rise in temperature if it receives more energy from the hot water.

3. The unit states that systems are not only part of engineering, but also other parts of society, such as financial systems, political systems, etc. Could using systems thinking be helpful for these kinds of systems as well?

Explain your answer.

If society used systems thinking, people would understand how things are created, how they function, and how they connect with other parts of the world. This would likely help all people to make more informed decisions.

4. Why do you think that engineering students are encouraged to think about uses for technology beyond entertaining society?

Encouraging engineering students to generate new and creative ideas for uses beyond entertaining society is very smart, because they could possibly create new technology used to better our health or improve our lifestye, instead of only focusing on little gaming gadgets.

5. Create a short poem or haiku (a poem with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second, and 5 in the third) to explain a problem you are currently trying to solve. Do not use more than 20 words to express the problem.
