Contextualization: Western expansion intensifies debates and violence over the expansion of slavery. As the divide between the North and the South grew, the opposing views of the North became too much for the South to tolerate, and most southern states seceded from the union after the election of president Lincoln, leading to the Civil War. The war was at first about political differences, but with the Emancipation Proclamation, the war became about slavery. African Americans were under slavery in the South, but free in the Union, making slaves want to try to escape to the North to earn freedom. The Fugitive Slave law prevented this, making slaves in a unique situation under slavery in a divided union.

Thesis: African Americans shaped the course and consequences of the Civil War through escaping slaves devastating the Confederacies source of labor and after the Emancipation Proclamation of African Americans could also serve in the Union army. After the war, African Americans influenced equality amongst American citizens and participated in government and established their own communities.
