Today, I interviewed Janae Harris via phone, a Clinical Assistant at Kennedy Krieger Institute. According to Ms. Harris the Neurobehavioral Unit typically serves children, adolescents, and young adults up to the age of 21; however, individuals over the age of 21 are occasionally admitted. Patients have a wide range of diagnoses, including autism spectrum disorder, developmental delay, intellectual disability, sleep disorders, eating disorders, stereotypic movement disorder with self-injurious behavior, and different genetic, metazoan, and environmental factors. I asked her what her credentials and she has a BSW from Chowan University.

Asserted Ms. Harris her preferred method of collaborating with other mental professionals is mostly when her client/patient has an updated behavior outburst. She said that she commonly gets updates about the client/patient’s new treatment each day because must implement them in her daily activities with the client. When talking to other Mental Professionals she usually focuses on individual therapy. In the session I also asked the following questions: 

What are the risks and benefits associated with treatment?



How soon could they expect to see signs of feeling better?



How long will does therapy sessions last?

The client/patient do often share space with others but most of the time they are by themselves. At the KKI a common treatment is the treatment room. This room is for random uncontrollable outburst for the client/ patient. The thought process it is to isolate the individual and keep them from hurting themselves and others. Another notion is that with isolation the client/patient does not have the attention of everyone and thus they calm down. When referring

to the therapist Ms. Harris says she gives them all the burst information so that the therapist can determine if there’s a new development.

After interviewing Ms. Harris, I found that she works in a facility that is closed and secure from the public. I also realized that I may not want to be a Childhood and Adolescent Therapist. She asserts that there are good days and there are bad days. Sometimes she must wear armguards and helmets and others just her clothes. She also says that the closest thing she get to group therapy is when the client/patients are in a common room together to see how they would react around others while being monitored the entire time. It was very interesting to know that there are a lot of different mental health professions around and that to get help, each person has to work together to inform each other. It was a pleasure to speak to Ms. Harris and she seems as if she truly cares about the process behind mental health.
