A hypothesis is a formulated statement of predicted behaviors.

In this lab we used pillbugs to observer their behaviors toward cornstarch and fine sand.

Hypothesis: The pillbugs that like the cornstarch will move toward the chamber filled with cornstarch.

VARIABLES: Define Independent (test) Variable (what I change) The independent variable is the variable that is being tested. Usually only one independent variable.

Define Dependent Variable (What data do I collect?)

The dependent variable is the variable that is being observed. There can be multiple dependent variables.

Constant variables are variables in an experiment that a scientist wants to remain constant. These variables must be observed as closely as the dependent variables.

Constant variables are not subjected to the change in the independent variable.

What is the Independent variable in this experiment?

The independent variable in this experiment is the time.

The dependent variable in this experiment is the pillbugs.

The controlled variables in this experiment is the second chamber filled with fine sand on both sides.

What is test, negative control and positive controls of this experiment.

The test how we test the hypothesis. The chamber with both sand and corn starch is the test or the experimental part of our experiment. Negative controls you do not expect a change to occur and positive controls you expect a change to occur. In this experiment the positive control is the corn starch and the fine sand in the first chamber. The negative control is the fine sand in both sides of the chamber.

1. What was the purpose of this lab?

The purpose of this experiment was to understand the steps and processes of the Scientific Method. Testing a hypothesis, doing an experiment, and entering data into a graph.

2. What was the question tested in this lab?

Will pillbugs move toward or away cornstarch.

3. What were the steps of the lab?

Create a hypothesis. Obtain two choice chambers. Use one as the experimental chamber and fill the left side with corn starch and the right side with fine sand. Then use the second-choice chamber as the control and put fine sand in both the left and right side. Put five pillbugs in each side of both the experimental and the control chambers.

Observe the pillbugs and collect data every 2 minutes until 12 minutes. Analyze and graph the data. Conclude that pillbugs tend to move toward the cornstarch.

4. What was the constant variable?

The second chamber filled with fine sand on both the left and right side.
