According to Nick Bostrom, the speaker in ‘What happens when our computers get smarter than we are?‘, Artificial Intelligence or AI, will have a larger knowledge base and capacity than what human are capable of. Currently, Outside Insight valuates that “things like natural speech/voice recognition, language and video data comprehension are still in their infancy when it comes to matching the capabilities of the human brain” (Outside Inight, 2018).

Bostrom claimed that this is possible over time because of the lack of confines that we as humans are limited to (i.e. the space in our skull for our brains) (Bostrom, N. 2015). “AI can deal with different issues faster because human neurons propagate slower than computer signal.

Besides, AI can store more knowledge and think faster, because it can be built in a large volume container, while human only have one brain and they cannot be extended.” (Samuel, K. 2015) This lack of limits combined with the processing speeds of the computer will facilitate unimaginable growth. The time that AI takes to evaluate and process information is extremely shorter than a human’s. One of the main drivers of AI’s evolution potential is its dependence on electricity. While humans need sleep and other nourishment to properly function, machines will not. They will not slow down due to fatigue or lack of sleep. This means they will not slow down to evolve like humans. This means that as time progresses, the knowledge and capabilities of AI

will progress exponentially while humans continue to advance at a slower pace allowing machines to advance out of human’s control.

In an interesting take on AI, Bostrom advises people to consider all branches and scenarios of AI before deciding on giving intelligence to algorithms this powerful. “In addition, the best situation is to make sure everything is [accounted for] and there is not harm to humans when AI is out of the box…. The best way to fulfill it is to force AI to learn human’s values” (Bostrom, N. 2015). Bostrom ended the presentation by stating that even if we cannot anticipate all of the outcomes or potential problems of AI, we should simply focus on creating AI that is on our side. This would allow for AI to coexist with humans eliminating a constant paranoia and fear of AI taking over and killing off or enslaving humans.
