04.04 AP Practice Essay Four

Both Author John James Audubon and Author Annie Dillard wrote two similar passages about migration of birds. In writing similar subjects both had written differently using different kinds of rhetorical devices, dictions or put on an image of their writing. Both of the authors had a unique way of writing the same subject that they both wrote from their hearts in their own words that they felt the readers would love to read and could understand.

Author John James Audubon's passage was and is written from the heart as you could feel his emotion through his story about migration of birds. He walks more about the experience he had seeing the birds moving from place to place such as he saying “In passing over the Barrens a few miles beyond Hardensburgh, I observed the pigeons flying from north-east to south-west, in greater numbers than I thought I had ever seen them before” this example shows how the he watch birds or I should say pigeons fly over from every direction they keep on migrating. This also, shows his tone as a surprise to happy emotion where he was excited to see the birds than happy to able to see so many.

Author Annie Dillard in other hand made her passage more about the birds rather than her experience such as “I stood with difficulty, bashed by the unexpectedness of this beauty, and mu spread lungs roared.” This is where she showed more emotion of how the birds are and how they made her feel they took her breath away for a second of seeing so many birds migrating.

This is where her writing showed that she wanted the readers to feel the emotion and picture it in their minds too.

The Author John James he seems to use long but detailed sentences that we can understand and not get bored reading. These sentences that he worked hard for the readers they had many commas where they need to be to slow down the long sentences and let the readers breathe a little to feel what he is trying to say. He also, utilized semicolons which helps to separate different ideas though the sentence that he had written and it is quite helpful in which I just previously in the assignment mentioned that I would try to utilized semicolons in my writing. For example, of both, “The air was literally filled with Pigeons; the light of noon-day was obscured as by an eclipse; the dung

fell in spots, not unlike melting flakes of snow; and the continued buzz of wings had a tendency to lull my senses to repose.” This example shows the long use of sentence and many semicolons that work together, now this may look too long and complicated but the semicolons help to break the long sentence down and make you pause for a second so you can understand the context of this.

Author Annie utilized her punctuation where she does not have a serious of long sentences to use many of those such as commas or semicolons in which she did not incorporate in her passage, she mostly kept it short and to the point. She wrote short sentence structures where it is affective with the choice of words used yet it is small so you can understand parts of it. The sentence structure she used was having the similes or imagery in her sentences such as “like smoke” or “each individual bobbed and knitted up” these examples show what the birds were like and how they migrated though out making birds seem more interesting than just seeing them as birds that fly.

Both authors had many similarities in their passages, such as writing about the same subject or the use of similes. They both used figurative language the use of similes in both passages to make the birds movements seem more on fire more likeable and adventurous. In Annie passage she used similes more often to symbolize how the birds are and feel when they fly and used a very dull yet energizing tone. While in John’s passage he used similes not as often but to make it where it shows from where the birds where fly from and how the scene is for the birds. Now you can see they are similar but both have and used different unique devices to make up their passage. This shows how many subjects can be written in many ways to make it more adventurous and knowledgeable to the readers or students to understand the importance of writing subjects that may have the same subject but still there can be a different way you can compose the subject to your taste.
