Testing Data 1. Under Method 1, how was the book was placed on top of the bridge? Describe how the bridge failed (12 points): The book that was placed on the bridge was upright and the bridge failed by bending like a rhombus.

2. How could you strengthen the bridge so it does not fail the way it did in Method 1 (12 points)?

You could strengthen the bridge by placing support structures in the corners.

3. For the bridge in Method 1, can you think of a way that two people could work together to load the bridge with the book and not have it fail the way it did (12 points)?

If you loaded the book on top of the bridge with the broad face laying on the top I hypothesis that the bridge would stay stable.

4. For the bridge in Method 2, if you moved the chairs closer together, do you think it would take more weight or less weight to cause the bridge to fail? Explain your answer (12 points): I think that if you moved the chairs closer you would need more weight to make the bridge collapse. I think tht moving the chairs closer would make the bridge sturdier and put less strain on the bridge and more on the chair.

5. If this were an actual bridge, explain why the Method 1 test and Method 2 test are both important for car safety (13 points): They would be important to make sure that the bridge could handle cars on it without breaking.

6. Looking at the failed bridge from Method 2, how could you strengthen the bridge to carry more weight? Explain (13 points): A way that you could strengthen the bridge is to reinforce the popsicle sticks in the middle with more hot glue.

7. Looking at the side of the popsicle bridge before it broke in Method 2, would the blue popsicle sticks (see red arrows) be in tension or compression under the bucket load (13 points)?

The blue popsicle sticks would be tension.

8. Name at least two ways you could test the strength of an individual popsicle stick (13 points): You could put an individual popsicle stick in between two chairs side to side and put a weight load on only it. Another way to test the strength of the popsicle stick would be to flip it on its side and do the same thing again.
