Option 2 “Thus the contest was joined on the central issue which was to dominate all American history the next dozen years, the disposition of the Territories. Two sets of extremists had arisen: Northerners who demanded no new slave territories under any circumstances, and Southerners who demanded free entry for slavery into all territories, the penalty for denial to be secession. For the time being, moderates who hoped to find a way of compromise and to repress the underlying issue of slavery itself – its toleration or non­toleration by a great free Christian state – were overwhelmingly in the majority. But history showed that in crises of this sort the two sets of extremists were almost certain to grow in power, swallowing up more and more members of the conciliatory center.”

Your responses: a) In the writing Nevins talks about conflicts between the North and South along with pro­slavery and anti­slavery. The Wilmot Proviso outlawed slavery in the new territory the US gained from Mexico. This caused conflict since the new territory was so close to southern slave states, the new territory was easily influenced by the pro­slavery beliefs and created a conflict that eventually ended in a war. b) The Civil War can be used to support Nevins argument. Nevins stated this in his argument, “But history showed that in crises of this sort the two sets of extremists were almost certain to grow in power”. This relates the war and his argument because as the war went on the ideas became more radical as the war got more dangerous. The power between both sides grew as they fought harder to prove their idea was better. c) The Compromise of 1850 can be used to refute Nevins argument. The compromise helped the North get California as a slave free state while the South would still have slavery and they could reclaim their runaway salves. This showed that there could be a peaceful way to settle slavery, where Nevins
