Student mental well-being is a growing concern, yet educational systems often fall short in addressing it effectively. While schools promote awareness, actions rarely translate into consistent support, leaving students overwhelmed by academic pressure and non-educational responsibilities.
Counseling services are frequently understaffed, mental health days are scarce, and students hesitate to seek help, believing their struggles are insurmountable. Despite claims that mental health outweighs grades, the relentless demands of deadlines
and tasks undermine this message. To truly support students, schools must foster an environment that balances academic achievement with accessible, proactive mental health initiatives, treating well-being as a core aspect of education.

Flexible Learning: Empowering Students at Liceo U by:
Flexible learning at Liceo de Cagayan University’s Senior High School Department helps students manage their time effectively. Combining two days of face-to-face classes and two days of online learning, it provides regular students with more flexibility to focus on academics while enjoying personal activities or family time. For working students, this system offers the chance to balance their jobs and education, allowing them to support their families or save for future goals without compromising their studies.
However, challenges remain. Unstable internet connections on campus make online classes difficult, with students often struggling to participate fully. Additionally, some students face issues with self-discipline and time management, which can affect their performance. Despite these drawbacks, flexible learning continues to empower students, giving them control over their schedules. Improvements in internet connectivity and better guidance for manag ing independent learning could further enhance this

LDCU LINKS SHS CAMPUSES
by: Stepanie Kate Engracia
In the school year 2024 - 2025, the Liceo de Cagayan University Senior High School Department from the Main Campus and Rodolfo Neri Pelaez (RNP) Campus merge into one department. The announcement was given by the teachers to the students.
The merger of the two campuses causes a significant shift in dynamics that will reshape the educational experience of students, faculty, and the surrounding community.
The invisible barrier between the two campuses are forced to be overcome as the school encourages unity and respect among all of the students. With the entirety of the different strands in the same environment, the students have more opportunities to interact with each other and to personally see how each individual acts. There is also a huge population of students that affects the amount of students allowed in a certain area for an activity or event.
With the mass population, ensuring clear and effective communication is difficult which then leads to misinformation and misunderstandings.
Students from the RNP campus face more struggles as they are the ones who are currently facing a changed environment. They encounter changes in routines, social structures, and rooms. The loud surroundings whenever class is ongoing, more strict in following school guidelines, and familiarizing where certain offices or places are. This decision aims in creating a comprehensive educational institution that promises to elevate the academic experience for students across both campuses.
As these students ad vance to the regional competition, they carry the university’s legacy and showcase their resilience.

The East Academic Cluster is the new building of the Liceo de Cagayan University - Main Campus. The building is placed on the same location as the former Heritage Building. Despite the 5 floors and additional classrooms and offices, the EAC is rushed and construction is still on-going.
Building a new facility in a rushed manner impacts the individuals that use the rooms. A key concern is the extremely loud environment as the walls are thin and hollow, making it hard for students to hear and focus on the lecture. The lack of proper ventilation also affected those who occupied the rooms, especially for the students in which the installment of Air Conditioning was around 2 months after the school year started. There hasn’t been any visible signs of poor construction that may endanger the residents of the building. While the urgency to build may stem from the limited time the workers had before the start of the school year, the long-term consequences of rushing the construction process can outweigh the short-term benefits, leading to huge challenges for both the building itself and its users. Careful planning, adequate time, and attention to detail are essential for creating a sustainable and functional building.

Despite this, there has been plenty of mixed reactions from the public, critics, and government officials.
LDCU Announces Plans for Parent-Teacher Association
by: Stepanie Kate Engracia
In a gathering of school officials and parents, Liceo de Cagayan University unveiled the plans for the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) on September 21, 2024 at the Liceo Civic Center.
The initiatives aim to enrich the educational environment and foster stronger community ties. This assembly offers insight into the multiple opportunities for parents, guardians, and teachers to come together to show a unified bond between everyone. Participation is needed to ensure strong collaboration and involvement for the betterment of the students.
The PTA plans to start a feeding program that prioritizes students who are unable to eat sufficiently or those who are malnourished. Investing in the creation of another clinic in the school campus in order to cater more students who are in need of medical assistance. There is insurance for the students in case of any unexpected problems or accidents that may occur and they need financial aid. The funds will also be used to support clubs or groups of students who will join in various competitions outside the school campus.

Parents are encouraged to pay the PTA fee of 300 per school year so that sufficient funds can be used for school related programs or activities that benefit the students and their experience during the school year.
Through these initiatives, the PTA aims to create a supportive and enriching atmosphere that benefits students, parents, and educators alike. The school administration encourages all families to participate actively in the PTA, as collaboration is essential to the success of these efforts.

Rising Concerns Over Student and Teacher Workload in Schools
As schools across the nation grapple with academic demands, both students and teachers are expressing growing concerns about increasing workloads. Many are balancing multiple subject requirements, extracurricular activities, and personal life. This leads to high levels of stress and constant burnout.
In the Philippines, more than 3.6 million Filipinos suffer from mental disorders, anxiety and depression as of 2023. In order to strengthen mental health care, the Philippine Council for Mental Health introduced the 2024–2028 Strategic Framework. Despite these initiatives, the nation still lacks enough mental health professionals, with less than one available for every 100,000 people.

There are some allegations that the timing of the book’s release is politically motivated. With the upcoming elections and Duterte’s rising profile as a political figure, some critics question whether “Isang Kaibigan” is more about building a favorable public image than genuinely connecting with youth. The book’s reception among young readers has been divided.
Liceo de Cagayan University (LDCU) is a top educational institution in Cagayan de Oro City, looking for ways to use technology in the classroom. They believe that technology can really help students learn better, so they’ve started a lot of programs that use digital tools and resources in their classes. From interactive websites to virtual reality experiences, LDCU wants to give students a modern and exciting learning environment that will prepare them for the future.
One of the biggest changes LDCU has made is using a Learning Management System (LMS). This is like a central hub where students can find all their course materials, turn in assignments, and talk to their teachers. It’s made communication and working together between students and teachers much easier, making learning more dynamic and interactive. LDCU classrooms are also equipped with modern technology like smart boards and projectors, so teachers can show interesting multimedia content and have engaging discussions with their students.
LDCU Embraces Technology for Enhanced Learning
The response to technology in LDCU has been positive from both students and teachers. Students find it easy to access online materials, and teachers see technology as a way to teach more personally and involve students more in their learning. By investing in technology and new learning methods, LDCU is making sure that its graduates are ready for a world that’s becoming increasingly digital.

Rosmar running as a public official is a big no! A person running to serve their country should not do so simply because others say they can, especially without the necessary credentials.
Unfortunately, the Philippines continues to have low standards when it comes to politics, allowing individuals to run just because they have money or popularity. While it’s true that her wealth could potentially benefit the country, this doesn’t justify her candidacy. Being a public influencer and entrepreneur is not enough.
She can help the Philippines without running for public office. There are countless ways she could contribute to the country, so why choose to run when there are so many other, perhaps even more impactful, options? She should be mindful of the consequences and think critically about what her decision could lead to in the future.
Our country, the government, and the people are already suffering due to the poor management and corruption of some officials. Why add to the growing list of concerns?
Public office is not something to take lightly. Individuals who believe they can run for office just because they are popular or praised by many are simply misguided.
Public service requires much more than fame; it requires knowledge, experience, dedication, and the ability to lead effectively, especially in a country as complex as the Philippines.
As students who live in this generation we need a leader who is committed to genuinely uplifting the nation, not those who are merely
seeking power, influence, or validation from their supporters. Leadership demands real vision, strategic thinking, and a deep understanding of governance and public policy.
Leadership requires competence, integrity, and a deep understanding of the complexities of politics.
In the future, we must keep in mind that a good leader ensures they serve with vision, fulfill responsibilities, and face the challenges in their community. In the future, when it’s our generation’s turn to lead, we should be prepared.
So, let’s take this time as young individuals and students to build ourselves up, set high standards for our country, and contribute to strong, effective leadership.

LDCU prepares students for future job market
by: Ellaine Muring
Liceo is doing a great job in preparing students for the future job market, but it should be enhanced by adding more practical, hands-on experiences.
The job landscape is changing very rapidly, and skills required for the jobs are far beyond theoretical knowledge. The addition of internships, apprenticeships, and project-based learning will prepare the students with the practical skills and real-world experience employers look for.
Such a move would make them more employable while also familiarizing them with the demand for challenges in contemporary workplaces.
And LDCU certainly excels in academic development. However, what the job market demands for a possible working environment is practical exposures except for mere bookworms. The practical experience can enhance the capacities by raising the confidence level facing a challenging job market as Liceo can extend this practical exposure to enhance their capacities and build self-confidence. This development is for the betterment of the students as well as to have a more energetic and robust workforce.
Universities Leading the Charge: Advancing Sustainability Through Innovation
by: Nica Doquila
Sustainability seems to be earning its rightful place within Assistant Research Partnerships. These collaborations are starting to see maturity with sustainability issues being positioned as an equals in the university setting or simply together with all the other multiple strategic imperatives.
Students are getting actively engaged in research and activities meant to incorporate sustainable practices not only on campus but also in their communities.
Students have taken initiatives directed at establishing sustainability offices and task forces that can push for a number of sustainability initiatives to be mainstreamed into activities across the board. Some staff members have the sole responsibility to implement relevant measures across the university and
protect internal ecosystems within the institution. Evaluating existing standards, targets, and performance of energy, waste, and resource use are the key tactics used to assess practices and implement sustainability undertakings. As for water conservation, active measures are being taken throughout universities. For instance, rainwater collection systems and fireproof trees and plants have been introduced by a number of schools as a way of mitigating the effects of drought. In addition, courses on water use management emphasize the need to conserve water, which implores students to adopt such practices as part of their daily lives.
Collaboration with local organizations and governments is another significant aspect of university sustainability initiatives. Many institutions partner with local nonprofits, businesses, and government agencies to develop programs that promote environmental awareness and action within
the community. These partnerships can lead to initiatives like community clean-up events, tree-planting drives, and educational workshops, creating a ripple effect of positive environmental impact.
Moreover, universities are increasingly investing in sustainable technology and research. Cutting-edge projects include developing green technologies such as energy-efficient systems, waste-to-energy solutions, and sustainable materials. By involving students in research and development, universities not only advance technological innovations but also prepare students to become future leaders in sustainability.
Universities are making substantial strides in sustainability through coordinated efforts, innovative practices, and community engagement. By prioritizing environmental responsibility in all aspects of their operations, they are not only reducing their ecological footprint but also empowering students and communities to embrace sustainability as a core value. As these initiatives
continue to evolve, universities will play a pivotal role in shaping a more sustainable future for generations to come.

Why are students’ so drained and tired now adays?
by: Ellaine Muring
It is quite difficult not to notice the weariness that seems to seep out of the skin of today’s students. It’s as if the collective air is thick with a sense of tiredness, an expression of a generation that’s carrying around a load so much more burdensome than books and backpacks.
We all, at some point, feel crushed under the weight of having to succeed. However, today’s students are just amplified. The pressure is relentless: get into the “right” college, land the “perfect” internship, and navigate a fiercely competitive job market. They are always striving for that achievement and leave little room for rest or being a teenager.
Then there’s the influx of information and comparison. Social media, a fine instrument in connecting with other people, also makes one feel uncool. Each of everyone’s highlights appears so glamorous to show that he had his good moments, that he must feel under pressure and is anxious, feeling incapable of being able to totally “unplug and chill”.
shadow of the pandemic looming in every corner. The piece of education that has been disrupted, loss of social interaction, and uncertainty over the future take a heavy toll on mental health.
Students are maneuvering through the aftermath of a badly disturbed period, which only adds to their already heavy load. Acknowledging this exhaustion should become a recognition that it is not just a phase, but a symptom of a system that so often puts the emphasis on achievement rather than on well-being. We must create space for students to breathe, to unplug, and to attend to their mental well-being. We have forgotten that success is more than passing grades and outstanding achievements; it’s thriving, not merely surviving.
Life at the Edge
Balancing Livelihood and RTA Regulations
by:
The streets of Cogon Market are more than just busy walkways; they are where the vendors’ daily struggles unfold. Each stall tells a story of hard work, determination, and the constant fight to make a living. In these crowded, narrow alleys, vendors stand strong, knowing that at any moment, the Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) might show up, putting their sales, their goods, and their money at risk. They face the fear of having their goods taken, receiving fines they can’t afford, or losing everything they’ve worked for. These vendors live on the edge, caught between the need to survive and the rules that make it harder for them to do so. Their struggle isn’t just about selling products—it’s about holding onto the chance to make a living in a world that seems to push them down at every turn.
They call it “pagpangarate”—a word that captures the shock and scramble of RTA’s surprise visits. Each afternoon, the vendors watch for that all-too-familiar sight of officers coming around the corner, sending them rushing to hide their goods or find another spot. Every encounter brings fresh worries: Will today’s earnings vanish? Will they lose the cart that helps them survive?
Will they face a fine that could wipe out what little they’ve made?
For vendors like Ante Grace, this routine has become a bitter reality. “Lisod, mag barog ka dinhi kada adlaw, init kaayo, tapos bantayan nimo pirme kay basin naa nay RTA,” she says. She understands that the RTA has a job to do, making sure the streets stay orderly. But she also knows she has no other choice to feed her family. Each day, she sets up her stall, knowing a single RTA visit could wipe out everything she’s earned in a moment.

But she also knows she has no other choice to feed her family. Each day, she sets up her stall, knowing a single RTA visit could wipe out everything she’s earned in a moment.
For vendors like Nanay, who has sold cold drinks for years, the sidewalk has become home. “Dugay na ko ga baligya ani, dili na ko kabalo unsa pa’y lain nga trabaho,” she says. To her, the sidewalk isn’t just a place to sell—it’s a lifeline, a means to put food on the table for her children. And despite the constant threat of “pagpangarate,” she can’t imagine doing anything else
The RTA remains a constant shadow over these vendors, one that brings not only fear but also a sense of vulnerability. “Kabalo mi nga trabaho na sa RTA para naa’y order sa dalan,” says Ante Grace. “Pero dire mi nagkabuhi. Para na ni sa among pamilya.” Despite the risk, the vendors choose to return each day, driven by the need to survive and an unbreakable hope that, tomorrow, they’ll still have their place in the market.
In Cogon Market, life is a daily challenge for vendors who face both the harsh weather and the constant worry of RTA crackdowns. They stay not because they want to break rules, but because they need to support their families, despite all the difficulties. The sidewalks don’t offer safety or stability, but for these vendors, they are a lifeline—a place where they find purpose and hope. Each day, they return with
a quiet determination, knowing that, despite the risks, this is their place. For them, survival is about more than just following rules; it’s about holding on to the only way they know to make a living, hoping that someday their struggles will be understood, and they might get a chance at something better.

Hide & Seek
The Clever Tactics of Street Vendors
In Cagayan de Oro’s Cogon Market, street vendors are a big part of the daily scene. The market, known for its busy aisles and variety of goods, has become a place where vendors use clever “hide and seek” tactics to keep their businesses running despite challenges. These vendors are resourceful, finding ways to serve customers while staying out of the watchful eye of authorities. For many, this isn’t just work; it’s their main way to support their families, and they bring a lot of resilience to the job.
Cogon Market is a natural choice for these street vendors. With so many people coming through each day, vendors can blend into the crowd, selling without attracting too much attention. People from all walks of life shop here, looking for fresh produce, clothes, or affordable everyday items.
The constant foot traffic helps vendors, too—more people means more chances to make a sale, and it’s harder for authorities to single out individual vendors in the busy scene
One of the main tactics vendors rely on is mobility. Many don’t have a fixed stall; instead, they use carts, baskets, or small tables that can be quickly packed up if they see officials nearby.
If a vendor spots an official making the rounds, they can gather their things and move to a new spot, making it hard for authorities to track them down. This freedom to move allows them to set up near bus stops, the market entrances, or other high-traffic spots, where they’re more likely to draw customers. Shoppers appreciate the convenience and often the lower prices, so they don’t mind a bit of flexibility.
Another tactic is using hidden or rotating spots around the market. Vendors don’t stay in one place all day; instead, they move around to stay under the radar. Cogon Market has plenty of nearby alleys, side streets, and tuckedaway corners, where vendors can set up quietly for a few hours before moving on. This constant moving makes it hard for officials to predict where they’ll be. It’s almost like a small, daily game— finding a good spot, serving as many customers as possible, and then moving on before they’re spotted.
Communication between vendors is another key part of their strategy. There’s a strong sense of community among vendors at Cogon Market. If one vendor spots an official nearby, they often signal others with a quick hand wave or a simple word of warning. In some cases, vendors use mobile phones to spread the word quickly. This network of communication keeps everyone prepared, helping them protect their goods and avoid fines. It’s teamwork in action, and it shows the tight bonds that form in this line of work.
Life as a vendor in Cogon Market isn’t easy, though. Many of these vendors rely on their daily earnings to provide for their families, so there’s a lot on the line. However, the permits and fees required to legally sell in the market can be costly and hard to get, so many vendors operate informally. For them, street vending is a lifeline, even if it comes with the constant risk of fines or having their goods confiscated. Some people believe street vending should be better regulated or that permits should be made more accessible to help vendors feel more secure. But until that happens, vendors will keep adapting, using their strategies to stay ahead.
Vendors at Cogon Market aren’t just selling goods; they’re also filling an important role in the local economy. Many shoppers rely on them for affordable products and everyday essentials, and some people prefer the quick, personal service they get from street vendors. Despite the obstacles, these vendors remain a part of life in Cagayan de Oro, and their resilience
allows them to keep offering these services.
Cogon Market’s street vendors show the resourcefulness needed to survive in an informal economy. They navigate crowded streets every day, always keeping an eye out for officials while looking for the best spots to set up. Through constant movement, hidden corners, and a strong network of communication, they find a way to keep going. This “hide and seek” may seem playful, but for them, it’s serious work that protects their livelihood. These vendors are part of what makes Cogon Market vibrant and alive, and their determination shows the lengths people will go to support their families and stay connected to their community.

the streets clean, demon strating their commitment to the community and the environment.
Vendors at Cogon Market understand that their livelihood depends on the health and appeal of the market environment. A clean market attracts more visitors, which translates to increased sales and a better shopping experience. Recognizing this, many vendors have adopted practices aimed at reducing waste and maintaining cleanliness.
Many vendors have started to implement waste segregation systems at their stalls. By providing separate bins for recyclables, compostables, and general waste, they encourage shoppers to dispose of their trash responsibly. This initiative not only reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills but also promotes recycling within the community.
Vendors have organized regular clean-up events, enlisting the help of their fellow merchants and customers. These drives are not just about cleaning the market; they foster a sense of community and shared responsibility. By coming together to clean the streets, vendors
such as using biodegradable packaging and sourcing local products. By reducing their environmental footprint, they set an example for others in the market and encourage a culture of sustainability.
The efforts of vendors at Cogon Market to keep the streets clean have had a significant impact on the community. A cleaner market environment not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also promotes public health. Reduced litter leads to fewer pests and diseases, creating a safer shopping environment for everyone.
Moreover, these initiatives have strengthened the bond between vendors and the community. Shoppers appreciate the efforts made by the vendors to maintain a clean space, leading to increased loyalty and support for local businesses. As a result, the market has become a source of pride for the community, showcasing a collective commitment to environmental stewardship.

BALANCING ACT Extracurricular Activities and Student Life
by: Arabella C. Balsarza
For students on campus, balancing academics with extracurricular activities is like walking a tightrope— challenging yet rewarding. These activities go beyond mere hobbies, offering students a chance to develop skills, build confidence, and strengthen their bond with the school. However, finding harmony between these commitments often tests their resolve.

Queer Representation in the Philippines
The Impact of LGBTQ+ Visibility in Media and Entertainment
by: Stepanie Engracia
Times have drastically changed since back then.
The presence of LGBTQ+ individuals in Philippine media and entertainment has increased, creating a platform for greater representation. This plays a critical role in promoting inclusivity and challenging deeply ingrained biases towards the community.
The Philippines, known for its strong Catholic beliefs, shows to be slow in embracing LGBTQ+ rights compared to other parts of the world. However, over the years, LGBTQ+ individuals have carved a space for themselves in Philippine entertainment. Series such as “Gaya sa Pelikula” offer nuanced portrayals of queer characters and stories
that resonate with a broader audience.
The digital age has also played a crucial role in amplifying LGBTQ+ voices, providing alternative spaces for queer narratives, increasing the ways in which LGBTQ+ stories are told. This accessibility has allowed young people in particular to find
role models and a sense of belonging in a society that is often still hostile to LGBTQ+ rights.
The impact of this visibility extends beyond enter tainment. This is crucial in the Philippines, where the fight for the passage of the SOGIE Bill remains ongoing. Media plays a vital role in shaping public opinion, thus increasing normalization of LGBTQ+ characters on screen gradually changes societal attitudes.
To add, the visibility of LGBTQ+ celebrities have contributed to a broader ac ceptance of non-heteronor mative identities. Figures like Vice Ganda, who is an openly gay comedian and host, have become household names and symbols of resilience and pride for the LGBTQ+
commu-
nity. Queer representation in Philippine media and entertainment is a vital
