t all still seems so surreal. Everyone has that memory of waking up to clips of our very own Olatunji Yearwood taking over the stage of UK’s top reality talent show, the X Factor. His appearance proved what we already knew… that our boy had that ‘it’ factor. Enough of ‘it’ to literally shake the arena, engage the audience in our traditional call and response and receive a standing ovation from the celebrity panel of Judges inclusive of Robbie Williams, Ayda Fields, Louis Tomlinson and the infamous, not easily impressed Simon Cowell. While work schedules were altered to accommodate for repeated online viewing of Yearwood dancing his way into a coveted spot in his canary yellow suit, we were also forced to contemplate that those moves were major ones for Soca music and Trinidad culture in general. While we wait with bated breath to see how the competition unfolds; Olatunji’s energy is strategically geared toward just a few things, “keeping focused and working hard, making music for Carnival 2019 and giving the X Factor my all and best!” With respect to how the X Factor experience might alter the course of his life, Ola states that he cannot answer definitively, “I really cannot say. I guess time will tell. I’ve always been Tunji and I’m not gonna change. I would really love to win and become someone Trinidad and Tobago is really proud of.” When asked how this compares

to him conquering the Soca Monarch competition, he refuses to pick his brain too much. According to Ola he is taking everything in one step at a time! “Right now I’m only through to the Six Chair Challenge. You probably got to ask me that question in three months.” Another celebratory musical note surrounds a new musical genre – Caribbean Wave - birthed through the genius of local producer David ‘Millbeatz’ Millien. The genre provided the framework for his recently released debut album ‘The Revolution’, a solid thirteentrack offering loaded with international collaborations. Among those featured on the projects are regional stars Wayne Wonder, Kevin Lyttle and Zoelah as well as a host of local artistes including Patrice Roberts, Lyrikal, Michael Logie, Abdie, Denice Millien, Preedy, Ricochae, Vivid Sound, Freshmen, Hashim, Cassi. Millbeatz describes Caribbean Wave as “a new modern sound which incorporates a perfect blend of multiple

genres. The drum patterns are heavily influenced by Soca music which is originated from the island of Trinidad and Tobago and also African music. It is a fusion of Reggae, Hip Hop and R&B melodies. The main thing that stands out is the ability for producers to use their creativity to form lead melody lines and turn them into intro’s, outro’s, chorus hooks or verses, instantly becoming artist features …” Millien has already made important strides toward ensuring that the genre receives international recognition. The Millbeatz

David ‘Millbeatz’ Millien

fraternity is currently in talks with a Grammy Award music publisher and music executive who has published for chart topping, household names like Kendrick Lamar, Drake and Travis Scott to sign a publishing deal. Additionally, the album produced under the label Millbeatz Music Records, will be internationally distributed through Fox Fuse out of New York. ‘Criminal Wine’ featuring Lyrikal and Patrice and ‘Green Light’ featuring Preedy have already been released and more blends are to follow. Another album project will be launched mid2019. On his commitment to taking the genre abroad and to his craft in general, Millbeatz emphasized that, “this is not a side hustle, music is my life and livelihood and I am committed to contributing meaningfully to our Artform and how the world sees and values us. I would like to ensure that the Caribbean Wave sound is not only accepted as the new standard of quality, but also that we are remembered for our cultural contribution to world music.” We definitely tip our hats to these two sons of our soil and more than that, we acknowledge that they have caught not just our attention, but also that of international audiences as well. All the best to them and all our musical entrepreneurs who are constantly pushing cultural boundaries! Stay tuned…

ET&T TAKE A MUSICAL JOURNEY NEWS FROM NAZARETH TO BETHLEHEM

T

here are a few elements that are imperative to a true Trini Christmas... Ham, sorrel, black cake and of course, Parang. Parang music has filtered into local radio rotations and live performances can be witnessed in public spaces and events, ushering the Christmas season into being. The official launch of the Parang season is done by the National Parang Association of Trinidad and Tobago (NPATT). According to NPATT, the origin of Parang dates back as to early 1527 with the music being a direct descendant of an experiment taking place in Mexico. It is said that “Fray Pedro de Gante founded the famous school “ San Jose de los Naturales “ where he and his Capuchin companions catechized and taught the indigenous peoples the liturgy of the Church and more importantly for Parang history, Music and the making of musical instruments.” However, it was not until the 19th century that this musical expression found its way to the shores of Trinidad and Tobago. When the Venezuelan peoples came to Trinidad in the late 19th Century to tend the Cocoa Estates, they brought another variety of secular and sacred music to the island. This music was more readily accessible by the ordinary people and it exerted an enormous influence on Parang. Thus, the tradition of House to House Parang became firmly established. NPATT, who’s slogan is “Built on History, fueled by Tradition” attempts to preserve the appreciation of parang music by hosting events, teaching students and providing performances for aficionados. This year the organization launched the Parang Festival 2018, with the first event of the season titled “From Nazareth to Bethlehem” on September 29th, 2018 at the Arima Velodrome. This was just one of the many events that will be hosted by NPATT for the rest of the year. 2

The concept of the event was

inspired by a biblical event that is often told during the Christmas period. It is of Mary and Joseph’s journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem. However, this is the first year for the association to have a concept that will guide each of their events throughout the season. In speaking with the Vice President, Neil Marcano he said they are hoping to emulate the journey throughout each of the events with the first taking patrons on a musical journey to Nazareth. The starting location was of the Mary and Joseph’s journey. Likewise, the final event will be a replication of what took place in Bethlehem. When asked how this would be represented; he responded saying, “through music which is one of the best ways to tell a Los Buenos Parranderos

story, coupled with decorations.” The story will continue to unfold at various locations in Trinidad, each bringing a unique and musical take for patrons to enjoy. Also keeping in line with the religious aspect of the story and what parang music represents, the event commenced with holy mass that was opened to the public led by his Grace, Archbishop Jason Gordon, and Father Dwight Black. Although this story would have been told many times, Marcano is confident that NPATT’s take on it is one of uniqueness, with an authentic look and feel. More so, it gives Trinidadians the opportunity to connect with the historic voyage. It is the association’s hope that this connection will make participants feel as though they were part of the journey.

the official launch of the event was one of positivity and it definitely provides a sense of hope with regards to attendance to the upcoming events. He further added, “People are interested to see what we have different this year.” As far as changes to the Parang landscape over the last couple of years in Trinidad, Marcano shared that there has been stagnation in the market. Visibility was limited and many persons felt as though Parang was a dying art form. That’s why this year’s journey is just one of the solutions that aim to breathe life back into Parang he said. Therefore, what does the future of parang in T&T look like? “We are trying to get a lot of youth interested in Parang. NPATT is tasked with keeping Parang music alive and we think investing in youth is a great place to start.” The organization is constantly encouraging youths to get involved and they have also been guiding the transition of junior parang bands to senior bands. “By doing this, it’s a way in which we provide direction and guidance during this transitional period.” To find out more about this year’s events, be sure to check out the organization’s Facebook page: The National Parang Association of Trinidad & Tobago.

TTFF CELEBRATES 13 YEARS Written by D. Nandlal

good story can captivate hearts and be stored in memory for years to come. In many ways, film has the ability to provoke change, a global movement or merely offer a temporary relief from everyday life. T&T’s very own film festival took place on the 18th - 25th September. This year marked the thirteenth edition of the festival and the aim remained the same from when it first started – to celebrate films from and about the Caribbean and its diaspora, as well as from world cinema. Additionally, the festival also sought to facilitate the growth of Caribbean cinema by offering a wide-ranging industry programme and networking opportunities. The theme for this year’s festival was ‘love film.’ ttff also collaborated with one of the singer/songwriters to have emerged from Trinidad and Tobago, Ataklan. His song “The Sun Starts to Rise” is the featured soundtrack to the festival’s official 2018 trailer and was edited by filmmaker Kaz Ove. In an official statement about ttff/18, Founder/Festival Director, Bruce Paddington said the festival see themselves playing an important role in developing the local and Caribbean film industry in a number of ways. He further added that many filmmakers take the opportunity to premiere their films at T&T’s film festival, hoping to get feedback from both the audience and fellow filmmakers. The Programme Director, Annabelle Alcazar admitted that since the festival’s inception there have been vast improvements. Partly because the sponsorship has allowed for the festival to get better over time. This has led to the public response being favorable and they have seen a huge growth in the audience. Although Alcazar admitted there was a bit of hesitation when the festival first started, she said due to the ttff having nurtured local audi4

ences on how good both local & Caribbean films could be, it has impacted the festival positively. As for advice to the young and upcoming film producers, Alcazar shared that there are many ways in which ttff seeks to help and provide guidance. This year and as in the past, there were workshops opened to the public. However, she did stress that one of the best learning techniques would be to view the films that premiered during festival period. She said by doing so it would give filmmakers the opportunity to see how they can tell their own story from a different angle. There were over 100 films that was shown over the 8-day period and on any one day there were activities at various venues. This included workshops, art exhibitions, and limes at Drink bar and Ataklan and Melvina

of course screenings at various venues including MovieTowne, UWI, Big Black Box, and Grundlos Kollectiv. Even more so, some of the festival activities included attendance by international film professionals. In fact, "HERO: Inspired by the Extraordinary Life and Times of Ulric Cross" premiered on the festival’s opening night and some of the film’s stars and internationally acclaimed actors such as Fraser James, Peter Williams, and John Dumelo flew in to be part of the event. The film was shot in Ghana, the UK and Trinidad, and Tobago. It sought to tell the life and times of Trinidadian Ulric Cross and his contribution to the Pan African movement and his relationships with Tanzania's first president, Julius Nyerere and

Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana's first Prime Minister, and President. Additionally, the “Business Behind the Show” acting career workshop hosted by ttff was led by Noel Arthur, a Trinidad born actor. The workshop sought to provide Trinbagonian actors with key industry tips and hacks to breaking into on-camera acting work. Weeks before the workshop, Arthur posted a video on his Instagram account featuring Gina Rodriguez who plays the lead character in ‘Jane the Virgin.’ In the video, Rodriguez shared some love and words of advice for aspiring actors and the creative community of Trinidad and Tobago. The actress is heard saying "anything is possible. Latina...they always told me that I couldn't. Let me tell you something: as long as you get a good education, get trained, you can do anything. Nobody can stop you." During ttff/18, there was also an opportunity for selected filmmakers of the third Caribbean Film Mart, sponsored by BP Trinidad and Tobago, to have met one-on-one with international film professionals specializing in production and distribution. Did you get a chance to check out any of the films during the festival? Head over to our Facebook page ET&T Weekly and let us know your thoughts.

One of the industry’s most accomplished photographers, Gary Jordan thanked French for his tutorship in a post that read… “Calvino... my friend, my mentor, I am happy you will suffer no more, but sad that you have left us. You touched soo many lives over the decades, seeking out and giving life to beauty and art that was the human form. I was at my best when we worked together, the lessons and knowledge you bestowed I could never

A few hours after his passing, Mr. Elias posted a brief statement to his social media channels boasting of affection and respect for French’s powerful spirit and professional talent. “We lost a brother and friend... talented, warm-spirited, sometimes over-the-top, always richly-blessed with a eye for beauty...a contagious and scandalous laugh...and pragmatic wisdom for those who knew to listen... been approved by the singer, actress and businesswoman, will be “much more a character study than a music film”. Berg praised the singer, whom he worked with her first film, ‘Battleship’ in 2012, for her enthusiasm on the project. “I think she’s an extraordinary young woman and it really is kind of a pretty comprehensive profile of what goes in to making her this talent that she is. It’s all on track but I will prefer to make an official announcement.” Asked about the challenges of making a biopic, Siddharth said: “I think producing any film is never easy because there are always different considerations when it comes to different movies and especially in a biopic, because you have to be true to the life of a person and you can’t take liberty in making something completely different from his actual life.” “There are many heroes in India other than those in sports, cinema and politics… So, we should look at a lot of inspirations when it comes to movies that you want to make.”

Some of them are far more intelligent and got a lot more to offer than the average person. Amanda Ramkelawan is one such model. The 4th year Dental surgery student is new to modeling, but she has the qualities which would make her a success in that field. Not only is she beautiful, but she has the drive to go along with it as modeling was her childhood dream. The well-rounded Ramkelawan has a flair for fashion and admits to liking a plethora of local designers including Charu Lochan Dass, Shawn Dhanraj, Chandra Maharaj and Tobye& Shoma. No doubt her dream would be to work the runway or do a campaign for one of these soughtafter brands. In the interim, she is building her portfolio having worked with photographers like Tevin Newton & Maxrishka Photography. As a med school student, Amanda definitely understands the importance of diet and exercise in order to keep in shape. However, to hear her tell it, her look comes pretty naturally. “I make sure to drink lots of water every day and I reserve fast food for weekends only. I don’t have a sweet tooth either; I prefer fresh fruits and Veggies to sugary snacks” she says of her diet. As far as everything else: “I’m drawn to natural and homemade remedies for any skin, nails or hair problems and they truly work more effectively than many chemical products. I also use any free time during my day for exercise, even if it’s just for a couple minutes. A little goes a long way." We look forward to seeing more of this upcoming talent going forward.

ET&T IDREES SALEEM

HOT

SEAT

GET TO KNOW OUR LOCAL HERO/GRIOT Written by Dr. A Martin

Muwakil (my first mentor), Amir Sulaiman, Lupe Fiasco, Imam Ali, Prophet Muhammad, my brother Jaffari…

H

e is as synonymous to the local poetry game as Drake is to Hip Hop! Many can argue he is slightly more lyrical than the aforementioned Canadian rapper. As the art form and spoken word in particular continues to become increasingly popular across all generations we decided to chat with one of its rising wordsmiths. The Hot Seat welcomes 2014 Poetry Slam winner Idrees Saleem.

ET&T: Do you think that the Arts receive adequate support from the government and supporting stakeholders? Idrees: Apparently this is ‘belly banding season’. I always have to wait months for payment from every Ministry. They also could never pay your price, but they utilize poetry a lot to get their messages across. We've managed to actualize a lot of our dreams through sponsorship, but generally speaking, stuff could be improved.

ET&T: What’s the difference between spoken word and poetry? Is there a difference? Idrees: Spoken Word is a type of poetry. I believe what you're referring to is performance poetry and written poetry. The distinction is that one is crafted bearing the performance in mind. Therefore tone, delivery, cadence etc. is considered. Written poetry on the other hand divorces the necessity of the performer.

Spreading the culture Doing some youth outreac

ET&T: How did your career as a poet begin? Idrees: My career began in 2007 in the drama club I belong to, DMAD Company. I wasn't ready to act, so my director gave me the stage at intermission to share my poetry when he realized I liked to write. ET&T: Are you a full time poet? Idrees: Yes, if I don't perform, I don't pay rent. ET&T: What are the benefits and challenges of being a poet? Idrees: The benefits and challenges are plenty, plenty, plenty (sic). I get to plan my year. I have been doing what I love. I'm very much into outreach work and I get to use my art as a tool for youth empowerment, activism, and spreading joy. On the down

side, (sigh) people still don't respect spoken word poetry yet. You send an invoice and people ask why are they paying for words. Everyone tries to cut down your price and they don't question the Soca artiste. ET&T: Is this a lucrative field? Idrees: It is a lucrative field in the same way that insurance is. You have to go out and do the work.

16 ET&T • OCTOBER, 2018 • www.amgtt.com

Create the demand for yourself. Be excellent and remember that while you are an artist, you are also a business. ET&T: Who are your influences? Idrees: My influences are my peers, my students, and even those who aren't too happy with the blessings Allah has provided. Poets who I love are everyone from the 2 Cents Movement, Muhammad

ET&T: What role do you see poetry playing in addressing social issues? Idrees: Well that's right up our alley. Spoken Word, a few weeks ago has been recognized for youth work through the National Youth Awards. The 2 Cents Movement received the awards for Best Youth Group and Most Effective Youth Programme. Spoken Word has been used to address Gender Based Violence issues, Youth advocacy, Patriotism etcetera. ET&T: Some have said that poets are this generation’s Calypsonians? What is your opinion on this belief? Idrees: While young Calypsonians like Helon Francis have been keeping the fire alive, I do believe that there is truth in the statement. This is regarding the intent and effect of Calypsonians and spoken word poets, being the artistic watchdogs in society. ET&T: To what do you attribute your success as a poet? Idrees: My success can be attributed to a few things. Firstly, my hunger - from a socio-

HOT SEAT economic standpoint, I divorced all other options and put the Arts as the only means to eat. I also have calypso royalty in my blood. My uncle is Gregory Ballantyne (GB) who wrote the well-known ‘Calypso Rising’ and also wrote for many established Calypsonians. I have always tried to utilize my resources. I am seen as a highenergy performer because I find ways to maximize the performance aspect. This is due to my theatre background. Also, poets tend to try to be mysterious and reserved. Not me. I iz de most sociable, talk ‘chipidness’ kind of people person you can find.

Idrees: My most memorable piece would probably be a poem I wrote about mango. It's requested a lot because of its lightness and humour. My most memorable performance would be when I won the national poetry slam. ET&T: Where would you like to take your poetry? Idrees: I have traveled through poetry for the first time in 2017 and 2018. I would love to show the world how we do poetry in Trinidad and Tobago. I'm working on my first publication and I hope it isn't my last. I also want to say that I contributed to making Spoken Word a career option for the upcoming poets. I won't mind collaborating with Lupe Fiasco, Amir Sulaiman, Nas, or Chronixx.

Sitting with his mentor Muhammad Muwakil

ET&T: Is there a topic that you’re most passionate about writing about? Idrees: I'm most passionate about the young man in the ghetto who has ‘dead end’ written on his forehead. How can I reroute his narrative?

ET&T: Do you have a daily morning or night time ritual? What is it? Idrees: Morning ritual -Fajr. Night time ritual -Isha (Muslim daily prayers)

ET&T: Do you read a lot? If so, what was the last book that you read? Idrees: Shamefully, I don't read a lot because I fall asleep when I try to read books. The last book I read was a chapbook by poet Steven Willis. ET&T: In your opinion, why is poetry so popular within T&T at this time? Idrees: Spoken Word has become popular because of all the groundwork being done. The single most effective contribution in my opinion, is the work being done in the schools. Once you grasp the youth, you affect the culture. ET&T: Is there a relationship between poetry and Hip Hop? Could this be a reason why the young people are identifying with spoken word? Idrees: Hip Hop is historically a mixture of Black American and Caribbean culture. This is the same with Spoken Word. They both have rooted themselves in speaking to plight and addressing

ET&T: What’s the strangest food/ food combination you have ever eaten? Idrees: I don't eat weird things really because my foods have to be Halaal. However I have acid reflux, and the kind of home remedies you does have to ingest! I drank something called ‘bitter bush’ from Africa. I drank something else the Chinese use called ‘slippery elm’ and something else called ‘black seed oil’. I still have acid reflux. Lol

lower class issues. Young people also just like things to sound good. So if de ting have a nice rhythm and cadence to it and nice word play then they will dabble. They also get a chance to say what they feel and their mentors aren't inaccessible so you get to interact with the person who you want to be like as opposed to a foreigner. ET&T: Do you think that the increased interest in Spoken Word particularly within the school environment and among the youth population can

have a positive impact on literacy levels and a general interest in reading and literature among that demographic? Idrees: Of course it can affect them positively. Because we'd be teaching them the way they want to be taught, as opposed to the way we think they need to be taught. Also they get immediate affirmation as opposed to waiting on an exam at the end of term. ET&T: What has been your most memorable piece and/or performance?

ET&T: What’s at the top of your bucket list? Idrees: To create a successful business model for the young men on Nelson Street to utilize their skill and actualize their potential by collaborating with their once warring fraction. Right under that is to tour Africa. ET&T: What’s currently on your music playlist? Idrees: Lupe Fiasco's new album, Chronixx, Nas, Damian Marley, Freetown Collective, Mos Def, Kendrick Lamar and Quranic Recitation.

CELEB PROFILE

SLICK WOODS

Name: Simone Thompson Age: 22 (August 13, 1996) Profession: Model Claim to Fame: Thompson – named Slick Woods by her friends – was raised in California. Her mother is incarcerated, and she was raised by her grandmother as she endured a tumultuous childhood. In Los Angeles, about three years ago, she was a homeless teen when she was discovered by model

Ash Stymest, who quickly befriended her and introduced her to photographer Dave Mushegain. It was his photographs that landed Woods a spot in Kanye West’s Yeezy Season 2 lookbook. Bouyed by her newfound recognition, Woods capitalized on her distinctive gap-toothed look and natural flair leading to a meteoric rise in the industry. She has since done campaigns for Moschino and Calvin Klein. She has appeared in runway shows for Fenty x Puma, Yeezy, Fendi, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu and Jeremy Scott. She also featured in several notable magazines such as American Vogue, Vogue Italia, Vogue Japan, Glamour, i-D, Jalouse, Net-a-porter, Dazed, V and Love. In commercial work she has modeled for Urban Outfitters. Openly bisexual Slick Woods is an avid marijuana smoker and advocate, though she has been rejected from some brands because of it. The rebel-minded model has

a strong social media following over 200K, showcasing a nonchalant attitude that appeals to her Gen-Z audience. In July of this year, she announced her pregnancy on Instagram. She confirmed to Elle UK that her expected son’s father is Ivorian-Canadian model Adonis Bosso. Woods gave birth to son, Saphir, shortly after appearing in Rihanna’s SavagexFenty fashion
