WE DELIVER FOR

WOMEN

From incontinence to pelvic pain and other disorders, relief is within reach. While the term is not widely known, pelvic floor disorders are surprisingly common. In fact, one in three women will experience them – whether it’s fecal or bladder incontinence, overactive bladder, pelvic pain or organ prolapse. These are often a normal part of aging, but they’re just as often treatable. So take back control and get back to doing the things you enjoy with leading diagnostic and rehabilitative care from Women’s Memorial Hermann.

You may know me as a Memorial mom of four fabulous boys and wife to Roger Clemens, but what you may not know is that I love finding cool and unique products because, let’s face it, in a house full of boys, a girl needs her girl stuff! So, here are some things I absolutely love... and hope you will too!

BY DE B B I E C L E M E N S @debbieclemens

Maison de Vacances Pillows I’m always replacing pillows on my couch or bed, and I love this line. All pieces are made in France with beautiful art and design. The patched cowhide pillow features a metallic silver, and the “Love” pillow is leather with gold studs. If you’re looking for accent pillows, check these out. www.calypsostbarth.com

Big O Key Rings This was a gift to me, and at first I wondered what I would do with it. But, I love it! I wear it around my wrist, so it frees up my hands, and I don’t have to dig around looking for my keys in my purse. They come in awesome colors! www.o-venture.com

Norma Kamali Painter’s Coverall Norma Kamali is such a legend and so talented. Her clothes are timeless, and the fabrics are so great for travel and comfort. These overalls are the bomb. They are so comfortable and totally my new favorite! www.normakamali.com

Allen Edmonds Texas Longhorn Carlyle Dress Shoe SpaLife Hydrating Facial Wrap I love the motto, “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you have to live in!” SpaLife’s Hydrating Facial Wrap has coconut and Shea butter to apply to the face like a mask. Leave it on 20 minutes, and easily warm it up or cool it to match your preference. I love the Honey and Anti-Aging Collagen. www.myspalife.net

12

This could be a wonderful Father’s Day gift if Dad is a Texas Longhorns fan. Proceeds from the sale of this limited edition shoe benefit the University of Texas Senate of College Councils’ William Powers Jr. Endowed Scholarship. The shoes are sharp looking with the Texas longhorn logo. www.universitycoop.com

Girls’ Day Out:

Shopping at Dog Friendly Stores

M

y name is Samantha. I am a beautiful little girl who wears a fur coat and loves to shop. When my best friend Susan invited me to go for a girls’ day out, I could barely wait to get in the car! My Ruff Lauren leash was dirty, so I opted for the Canine Klein one, and off we went. We were off to Highland Village, which has many dog-friendly stores. I can go in if I am on my best canine behavior. On the way, we called our friend Jan and her pooch Crazy Gracie to join us for the day. Gracie was having an attitude adjustment in time out, so only Jan came along. Our first stop was Starbucks, where good dogs can sit at the outdoor tables. After a quick stop for coffee for Susan and water for Jan and me, we went to Donald Pliner for some haute couture in shoes! The store is very dog friendly, and occasionally, Donald Pliner has his own dogs there for events.

Natalie Parffrey served water to Samantha.

After lunch, we strolled over to Valobra Master Jewelers, which was a wonderful way to end the day. This bow-wow loved seeing all of the beautiful baubles and beads. I did open a can of pout though, because those baubles were for humans only.

Next door is the Apple Store, where an iPad was waiting for me, so I could check out the cute pups.

Samantha wished for some baubles and beads. Samantha and Susan Hulburt.

Across the street is The Paper Source, which welcomes well-behaved dogs with open arms. There are lots of chic and glitzy things to see!

Samantha wagged her tail at the paper goodies Susan Hulburt showed her.

Lunch was at The Drexler House, where all well-behaved Fidos are welcome. It is a great place to meet other pups, and Jan and Susan liked the food.

Highland Village is a great, dog friendly place to spend quality time with the pampered pooch. What a fun place to unleash that pent up energy for pups and humans. Our girls’ day out was a howling success!

Sarah Gish recently sat down with Briargrove resident, whirlwind info-mom and community connector Sarah Gish. What fun we had!

As the founder of Gish Creative, she has worked on a variety of marketing projects, led workshops and presented talks on a variety of topics with the goal of sharing her love of the arts and marketing while being of service to others. Gish believes in preserving and promoting her community, as well as being a changemaker in the world. Enjoy our chat!

AM

You used to call yourself the “Summer Camp Queen,” and now you’re the “InfoMom.” Where did these titles come from, and how did you develop them?

Sarah Gish:

Ever since I started Gish Creative in 2000, I have been a researcher and gatherer of information, especially after my first son was born and I wanted to find cool summer camps and fun family activities for us. But, I’ve really taken off with my desire to uncover a broader spectrum of in-

teresting arts events, new spots in Houston, spiritual programs, fun happenings and more. My friend recently called me a “life-aholic,” and that’s really what I am. I love life, and I love to share my joy with others. I do that by finding exciting things to do, see or learn that I then tell Houstonians about in one of my three digital publications: Gish Picks: A Guide to Cultural Activities for Families; Spirit Picks: A Guide to Inspiring Activities in Houston and The Summer Book®: A Guide to Houston Day Camps for Kids and Teens.

Sarah Gish

AM

You love information so much that you started a new speaker series called Words of Wisdom: Lively Talks on Inspiring Topics. How’s that going?

SG

It’s been great! Every Friday from noon to 1 pm, we gather at the Houston Ayurveda Center in River Oaks to hear from a community leader on a variety of topics. So far, I’ve learned about Ayurvedic medicine, mindfulness meditation, easy ways to declutter, how Oneness Blessings work and alternatives to traditional schooling. Most recently, we had a tea tasting with the Path of Tea, as well as some great talks, such as The Changing Face of Houston: Insights from 34 Years of Houston Surveys with sociologist and researcher Dr. Stephen Klineberg; The Healing Connection of Sound with Jungian analyst Jennifer Embry; The Heart of the Matter: Why Physiology and Trombones are Important with worldrenowned heart surgeon Dr. Billy Cohn and Creativity Matters: Discovering Your Inner Artist with artist Kay Kemp. I’m doing this to expand my own mind, and it’s been great having others join me in that quest.

AM

Wow, that’s amazing! So what else are you up to, busy lady?

Sarah Gish with her “Phoenix Rising” art car creation.

SG

I lead monthly labyrinth walks on first Saturdays from 10 am to noon at a different labyrinth each month – check the events on the Houston Labyrinth Walkers Facebook page. My friend Kevin Casey and I do a bi-monthly “What’s Your Purpose?” workshop at Body Mind and Soul (BMS). I also do private intuitive guidance sessions at BMS, where I help people untangle their confusion about what their purpose in life is. And I do talks on summer fun for families and kids, as well as on a huge variety of other topics, all listed on my website.

AM SG

Who inspires you? That’s such a hard one, because so many people inspire

me, from the sweet lady with the big smile at the parking lot ticket booth to friends and family members. On a celebrity level, the person who inspires me the most right now is Maria Shriver. Coach By Misty Ellis

W

hen discussing how Coach Rene Rosales impacts students, Memorial High School (MHS) graduate and current University of Houston student Efrain Batista said, “I thank Coach Rosales for the football lessons but mostly for the off-field lesson of giving to the community and encouraging people to succeed. He taught me that there is truly no excuse not to get the best education possible and to make it big!” Coach Rosales illustrates the purposes of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and helps each child reach their potential in and out of the classroom. Coach Rosales and the Luis Jamie Rosales Foundation he founded in his brother’s memory will provide up to $10,000 in college scholarships to 10 or more graduating MHS students this year. Now in its sixth year, over $50,000 has been awarded in scholarships funded through an annual community-wide golf tournament, also organized and run by Coach Rosales. Clearly, Coach Rosales demonstrates the PTA purpose of working to “secure the highest advantages in education” for students through providing scholarships. Realizing that some students lack parental support because their nonEnglish speaking parents don’t know how to get involved at school, Coach Rosales founded and now coordinates the MHS Hispanic Parents Forum. Along with dual language volunteers, he translates and provides an opportunity for Spanish speaking parents to ask questions about their child’s education. Rosales, a 23 year veteran teacher, is credited with helping a student walk away from drugs and gangs, because a parent involved in the Hispanic Parents Forum asked him to help intervene and redirect a child into more positive activities. Removing another barrier between home and school, Coach Rosales’ lead-

36

ership in the Hispanic Parents Forum brought about a change in MHS office staffing. Now, each principal’s office is staffed with a Spanish speaker to translate for parents. Truly, Coach Rosales diligently and actively furthers PTA’s purpose of helping “parents and teachers cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.” When it became evident that some parents did not have basic computer skills to check their child’s grades online or open emails from the school,

Freshmen run drills under the watchful eye and careful instruction of Coach Rosales.

JUNE 2015 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelymemorial.com

Coach Rosales organized, promoted and hosted a series of basic computer classes, resulting in over 30 parents graduating from the program. However, providing skills was not enough. Working with the PTA, Coach Rosales developed a laptop loaner program, where old laptops were donated, refurbished and loaned to families without computers. This innovative program gives 10 families access to the Internet, as well as a computer to use in furthering their child’s education, applying for jobs and searching for college information. Coach Rosales’ efforts through the Hispanic Parents Forum’s computer training and loaning program are leading to a higher standard of home life for MHS students. Along with his duties at MHS, “Coach Rosie,” as he is affectionately called, coaches a sixth grade girls’ developmental basketball team for the Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association. His volunteer coaching efforts not only promote the welfare of students he may never coach or teach in high school, but they also provide another avenue to teach youth about the importance of working hard to achieve and fulfill their individual potential. Often the first one onto the field in spite of 100 degree heat for football

practices and last to leave at the end of the day, Coach Rosie teaches MHS athletes that success is within their reach with much work, perseverance and determination. Dedicated to helping students succeed, he sends the parents of his Spanish I students regular email updates about class projects, upcoming quizzes and due dates. Rosales also volunteers to drive soccer, basketball and golf teams to and from games when not coaching or caring for his mom, who lives with him due to Alzheimer’s disease. For working with parents to help students learn, motivating students to work for success and completely illustrating the purposes of the PTA through his actions, the Memorial High School PTA was proud to present Coach Rene Rosales as their 2015 Spring Branch ISD School Bell Award Nominee, which recognizes outstanding staff members who have exceeded the expectations of their job descriptions. Congratulations, Coach Rosales!

Positive Parenting 101:

Dealing with a Meltdown

I

t’s cliché, but raising children really is one of the hardest jobs, because it’s a job that is never finished. No matter how good of a job you do today, there will always be another situation tomorrow that requires parenting. When it comes to bad behavior, breaking rules and pushing boundaries are intrinsically part of a child’s emotional and psychological development. It’s our job as parents, therefore, to try and limit the opportunities for bad behavior and redirect our children to good behavior when they act out of line. But, that is much easier said than done. Your child makes a choice every second, and that choice is guided by a drive to get what he enjoys, wants or needs. Proactive, positive discipline is a method that gives children the tools and opportunity to choose good ways to communicate and attain their needs and wants and limit the bad ways to do so. For example, this past week, my two-year-old son said to me, “Dada, ball.” So, I bent down, grabbed the ball by my feet and proceeded to roll the ball back toward him. He proceeded to have a minor meltdown. I realized in that moment that the want he had in his head was not being

38

communicated well by him or understood well by me. I thought he wanted me to roll the ball back to him. In his mind, he wanted me to take the ball and hide it under my shirt. Silly daddy, how could I not have guessed that from “Dada, ball?” If I had punished him for his freak-out over Ball-pocalypse 2015, it’s important to realize that he would have associated the punishment with the wrong thing. Especially in toddlers, it is nearly impossible for them to associate punishment with actions. Rather, they associate punishment with their emotions. In this case, my son would probably have interpreted a punishment directed not towards his meltdown – the “how” he communicated – but rather with the sadness he felt when he didn’t get what he wanted – the “what” he was trying to communicate. The key here is acknowledging the emotion a child is feeling and letting him know that feeling isn’t bad. In the example of my son, I calmly told him that I could tell he was frustrated because I hadn’t done what he wanted, and that’s okay. I told him I would love to play the way he wants me to, but I can’t understand what he wants when he tells me through crying and yelling. I then asked, “Do you want me to throw the ball instead?” I finally hit the jackpot and guessed that he wanted me to hide the ball in my shirt. I then told him how to properly ask that, got him to repeat after me, and the world was once again right in the Biron household. The hard part in all of this is controlling your own emotions as you try to teach your child how to control theirs. Like I mentioned, it’s easier said than done. Also, remember that your child can either be doing the right thing or the wrong thing at any given time. They can’t do both at once. So, if you put your child in situations that limit bad behavior and encourage good decisions, you are staying one step ahead of the game. You can’t put a cookie in front of a two-year-old and tell her not to eat it while you leave the room. She just doesn’t have high enough cognitive development to understand delayed gratification, and you’re setting her up for failure. Instead, give her two or three things she can do while Mommy goes potty, and then praise her for choosing one of those good things. Remember, praise the positive and neutralize the negative. All that said, tomorrow there will be another lesson, another meltdown. It might be for my son too – not just me.

Q&A

With Dr. Kasia Lindhorst

Dr. Kasia Lindhorst

Tooth Fairy Time? What an exciting time in your little one’s life! Kids start losing baby teeth close to six years of age. They will usually start with two loose bottom front teeth that might get looser and tighter for few weeks, but finally, the teeth will either exfoliate (come out) or become what we call “shark teeth,” with permanent teeth in a row behind. In that case, a visit to your pediatric dentist fairly soon is important. For the next two years, between ages six and eight, kids lose four top and four bottom front teeth and get a set of four new molars in the very back. However, they still retain their baby canines and molars for the next few years. Those 12 teeth are lost in the second stage between ages 10 and 12. So, don’t panic if your preteen tells you that he or she has loose teeth. The tooth fairy might have to be a bit more creative though. Quarters might not work as well!

sons about money management, and money kids save from summer jobs can be used to pay for additional expenses that do not fall under the umbrella of college tuition, including books, food or even housing.

How to Approach

Look into College Savings Plans

Saving for College P

arents typically have a lot on their plates. In addition to juggling life’s daily events, parents also must keep their eyes on the future, which typically involves planning for retirement and saving money for their kids’ college educations. Though both rank high on many parents’ priority lists, parents should approach college savings much differently than they do retirement savings. lifetime than someone with just a high school diploma, so a college diploma still offers financial incentives that can soften the blow of repaying college loans.

Prioritize Retirement Savings Over Saving for College Some parents might feel a degree of guilt if they deposit more money into their retirement accounts each month than they do into their kids’ college funds. But, such a strategy is nothing to feel guilty about. College students who take out loans have a lifetime ahead of them to repay those loans, while their parents have far less time to grow their retirement savings. No parent wants their child to be saddled with debt after they earn their degree, but that does not mean parents should sacrifice security in their golden years just so their child can have minimal or no debt when they graduate from college. Studies show that the average college graduate still earns roughly a million dollars more over his or her

40

Simply socking money away in a savings account is no longer enough to finance a college education. That’s because interest rates on standard savings accounts are very low, and as The College Board® notes, the college tuition rate of increase is substantially higher than the general inflation rate. In addition, the average 2013-14 tuition increase was 3.8 percent at private colleges and 2.9 percent at public universities. Both of those figures are higher than the average increase in personal incomes, meaning parents are earning less, while tuition costs are rising. So, parents who want to finance all or some of their kids’ college tuitions need to be more creative.

Encourage Students to Save for Their Own Expenses Many high school students are not in a position to work a lot or even at all during a school year. And working too much may ultimately affect students’ performance in the classroom. But, parents can allow kids to work during summer vacations and encourage youngsters to save a substantial amount of their earnings from summer jobs. This can teach kids valuable les-

College education savings plans are an option, and many, including a Coverdell Education Savings Account and the popular 529 Savings Plan, allow earnings in the account to grow tax-free. Even withdrawals from college savings plans are typically taxfree as long as those withdrawals are used to finance educational expenses. Rules vary depending on the type of account, so parents should not assume all withdrawals are tax-free. But, college savings plans can also have an impact on a student’s financial aid eligibility, as these investments are often treated as parental assets. So, parents should explore all of the ins and outs of the various college savings plans available to them before opening any accounts.

Celebrate Graduates

DIY Party Décor and Gifts with

G

raduation marks a major milestone in any student’s life, and the event calls for a celebration to remember. Whether you’re planning a party in honor of the graduate or commemorating the accomplishment from afar, consider these fun Do It Yourself (DIY) party projects. Borrow an idea from Kelly Mindell, author of the Studio DIY blog. Graduation Balloon Superlatives feature colorful floating balloons, which bring fun and whimsy to any occasion. The project uses pictures of guests to give each one a special or funny recognition such as “Best Hair” or “Most Likely to be President.” Get creative to recognize all of your guests, and have fun watching everyone discover their very own piece of the party. When you can’t attend the festivities but want to honor a deserving student’s accomplishment, surprise them with a Money Confetti Popper. This easy-to-assemble popper is filled with money and confetti to create an instant celebration. For more ideas for honoring this year’s graduating class, visit www.balloontime.com.

rop photos from your computer into a text editing program and crop or resize them to similar sizes. Leave a large white border – at least 1/4 inch on sides and top and about an inch on bottom – around each photo. Below each photo, type the superlative, and then print photos. Or, print photos first and trim, leaving the same white border. Then, handwrite superlatives with a marker. If your photos are already printed, cut them down to same size and tape to cardstock. Cut out, leaving the same white border above and write superlatives. Inflate balloons with the helium tank and tie with twine or other string. Attach superlatives to twine using tape. Let balloons float on ceiling if you’re indoors, or attach weight to bottom of string behind superlative and display around party. Tip: If you want superlatives to be visible from all sides, make two copies of each photo and tape them back to back when attaching to twine. Use a thinner cardstock or paper if you want balloons to float on ceiling. Latex balloons will typically float for 5 to 7 hours. Temperature, humidity and altitude may affect float time. Ask Alex: College Questions

A

lex Belt is a Memorial mom, business owner and all around in the know kind of gal. Friends call on her relentlessly for advice. With students gearing up with their freshman year of college this fall, we’re doing what everyone else does – asking Alex!

Q

My daughter is an incoming freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University. Should she live in a dorm or off campus?

A

I feel that living in a dorm as a freshman is a part of the ultimate college experience. The dorm provides a community for your student and almost automatically lines up acquaintances and potential friends.

Q A

My son is going to an outof-state college. How will he find a roommate?

A great source for locating a roommate is www.RoomSurf. com. You will be provided a list of potential roommates in three simple steps: 1. Create a profile, and choose your college. 2. Complete the roommate survey. After answering a series of questions, you can immediately review all same-sex users ranked by compatibility percentage. 3. Once you receive a list of matches, you can email them or connect with them on Facebook. If you find a strong potential candidate, then you both will have to submit a room request on your college website.

Q A

What are some of the must haves for a dorm room?

Once the dorm is set up, you will probably go shopping for all of the things that you forget or realize your student needs, but here are my top 10 must haves: 1. Coordinating room décor 2. Storage bins 3. Desk items like a lap top, printer, lamp, pens, highlighters, pencils, case and several disk drives 4. Coffee pot 5. Tons of hangers 6. Snacks labeled with the student’s name 7. Toiletries, cleaning supplies, broom and toilet paper 8. Towels 9. Flip-flops and shower caddy if the student will use a communal shower 10. Laundry soap

Q

My daughter wants a headboard for her dorm, but I do not want to spend a fortune. Do you have any Do It Yourself (DIY) tips?

A

You can find different DIY headboards on Pinterest, but here is one I love: 1. Cut plywood or cardboard to desired measurements.

2. Lay the headboard over thick, quilted batting. Cut a two-inch perimeter around the headboard. Fold batting around the edge and tape it down. 3. Iron fabric and lay headboard on fabric. Cut a two-inch perimeter around the headboard and fold over. Using a staple gun, staple fabric through batting, starting at points between the center top and center bottom.

Q A

How do you decide who buys what for a dorm room?

My daughter shares a bathroom with a roommate and her two suitemates. Before school started, they all decided who would bring what, so four girls didn’t show up with four of the same items. They do not share shampoo, body soap or conditioner. They keep a list in the bathroom that rotates every two weeks on who purchases 12 rolls of toilet paper, hand soap and who is responsible for cleaning the bathroom.

Historic Galveston Island Offers

New Adventures This Summer E

njoying the cool breezes and crashing waves of the Galveston Island shore is one of those Houston area summer pastimes that makes you forget you’re even in Texas. But these days, the beach is just the beginning of what this charming little island has to offer.

L

ocated just an hour’s drive south on I-45, Galveston is buzzing with new energy. Whether you’re walking along the seawall, where laughter fills the air near the Pleasure Pier, or you’re journeying through the island’s emerging foodie scene one delicious bite at a time, it’s evident that Galveston has been reborn in so many ways. This month, the opening of the new Bryan Museum will add a touch of “cowboy” to the island’s ever-growing template. The museum, making public the world’s largest private collection of Southwestern historical artifacts, showcases 70,000 rare items spanning more than 400 years. Here, one can lay eyes on fascinating pieces, like the Joel Robison sword used to aid in the capture of Santa Anna after the Battle of San Jacinto in 1836 and original correspondence from the pirate Jean Lafitte. Located in the newly renovated landmark Galveston Orphans Home, the museum features three levels of exhibits, including a research library and children’s area. Meanwhile, the island’s Moody Gardens is living up to

44

its reputation as a premier family destination by constantly offering new adventures in its fabulous pyramids. In May, Moody Gardens debuted its latest attraction, the SpongeBob SubPants Adventure, which involves an interactive, 4-D film experience with friends from Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants. For thrill-seekers, the new Moody Gardens Ropes Course and Zipline is loads of fun, as is wandering through classic attractions like the Aquarium and Rainforest Pyramid. In the island’s historic downtown district, old-world charm draws fresh interest from lovers of the arts. Majestic iron-front buildings house a great variety of coastal-inspired art galleries that anchor the island’s popular ArtWalk event held every six weeks. And this year, The Grand 1894 Opera House offers a summer season with shows from performance greats Sinbad and Patti LaBelle. If exploring the island doesn’t make you hungry, hearing about Galveston’s emerging culinary scene will. Food on Galveston Island has become an attraction in its own right,

headlined by new dining establishments like Number 13, Farley Girls Café, Riondo’s Ristorante and the reinvented Pelican Club. Meanwhile, Chef Paco Vargas continues to receive top honors for his Central American twist on steak and seafood served at Rudy & Paco. This year, the restaurant was named on OpenTable’s list of the Top 100 Restaurants in America. While there’s plenty new to see on the island, there is nothing wrong with enjoying classic Galveston experiences, like sunbathing on the beach or enjoying a poolside drink. And, it’s easy to lounge all day with Galveston’s numerous lodging options, from the new Doubletree by Hilton Galveston Beach Hotel that opened in February to the newly renovated Harbor House Hotel & Marina at Pier 21. NEWSWORTHY

Gladney Darroh’s Inaugural Play a Success Memorial resident Gladney Darroh always wanted to be a writer. But, while walking across the University of Houston campus one night after a Texas Blue Norther whistled through, Darroh decided writing was an improbable way to earn a living. He switched his major to business, graduated and started his own company, Piper-Morgan Personnel. Still, Gladney Darroh he never lost the bug for writing and continued to study the craft. Once his kids left home, Darroh decided it was time to write his first play. The result was This American Family, which premiered in May at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. Emotionally powerful with original lyrics and music, the play focuses on the lives of everyday women of exceptional character and faith. It chronicles the struggles and triumphs of wives, mothers, daughters and sisters – and the men they love. Award-winning composer Steven Jamail wrote the score. Originally from Houston, Jamail graduated from the Shepherd School of Music and taught music at the Awty International School. Currently, he is the music director at Theater Kids in New York, a Rosie O’Donnell project. As the composer and lyricist for the musical VOTE, Jamail is no stranger

to new works. Once he read Darroh’s script, he was eager to be part of bringing this story to life on stage with his music. Some of the most talented theatre women in Houston comprised the production staff, and many recognizable actors from The Alley, Main Street Theatre and Theatre Under The Stars were cast. After reading the play and listening Steven Jamail to the music, they were eager Photo by shootMEpeter. to join. As chairman of the Boys and Girls Harbor, a charity that provides long-term residential care and education to children who have been abandoned or abused, Darroh donated the proceeds from all five performances in support of the Harbor. Stay tuned as Darroh continues his dream of writing plays!

Electronic Communication: Tips for Divorced Parents and a Child

By Nancy L. Rommelmann, Family Law Attorney

S

ummer possession and access can be a challenge for a child of divorced parents due to the amount of time a child is away from the other parent. It’s important that parents allow a child the freedom to communicate with the other parent during these times. This does not condone the situation where a parent is constantly calling or texting a child during periods of possession with the other parent. That behavior is wrong and invasive. Consider the following language that can be included in a court order to optimize communication between a parent and a child:

FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY

Electronic communication can include communication facilitated by the use of a telephone, email, instant messaging or Skype. Provide that the party not in possession of a child can have electronic communication with a child per the following terms: the party not in possession of a child can contact the child between the hours of – for example – 6 pm and 8 pm, and the parent in possession should make the child available to talk during those hours. If the child is unavailable to talk during those hours, the party in possession shall have the child return the call to the other parent within two hours of the missed call. Language can be included that the parent in possession provides/notifies the other parent within 24 hours of a change for a cell phone number, e-mail address[es] and other electronic communication access to the child.

Further language can be included that if electronic equipment is available, the child should be afforded the same privacy, respect and dignity accorded all other forms of access. Each parent should encourage and help facilitate, not impede or frustrate, the right of a child to contact the parent not in possession of the child if the child desires.

JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE 2015 SRT

T

he 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT is both a highly capable offroad adventure machine, as well as a great way to get the kids from home to school and back again. But, underneath it all, its main purpose is pure excitement. It used to be that only small, two-seater cars could race around town and tear around corners. Well, the engineers at Chrysler have taken an off-road trail machine and turned it into a highway rocket. The Grand Cherokee SRT is the product of Chrysler’s Street and Racing Technology team, who are dedicated to building high-performance vehicles. This team was created in the late 1980s

52

to develop the iconic Dodge Viper, a two-seater with a monster V-10 engine. The Viper wasn’t a big seller, but it did shine a spotlight on the brand. Slowly, the SRT engineering and marketing teams began to migrate over to other cars in the Chrysler tent, and by 2006, the Jeep Grand Cherokee got its own SRT model. But, the 2015 edition is really something special. Although the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a serious off-road performer and can tackle rough terrain without breaking a sweat, the SRT version should be considered strictly for on-road excitement. Although it looks exactly the same from the outside, it’s what’s under the sheet metal that makes this SUV very different. A 6.4 liter Hemi V-8 sits under the hood just waiting to spring to life. Crank up the engine, and it roars. This 475 hp beast will get this sizable SUV from zero to 60 in 4.8 seconds, awfully fast for something this large. If good fuel economy is a priority, then

JUNE 2015 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelymemorial.com

find another vehicle, because this Grand Cherokee gets 13 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Expect even worse numbers if you want to really have some fun. And, after all, fun is what this SUV is made for. The SRT’s exterior sports distinctive highlights to make sure your neighbors know what you’re driving, from the bright red painted Brembo brakes to the 20 inch Pirelli Scorpion all-season tires to the front and rear light treatments. The interior boasts a beautifully designed padded steering wheel with a back-lit SRT logo. The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with a starting MSRP of $64,695, is just so much fun to drive and to drive fast, you won’t want to drive anything else. Fire up the grill and serve up robust, savory cuts, such as Omaha Steaks’ Tbone or Rib Crown selections for your Father’s Day celebrations. The T-bone is a thick cut to give you more bone-in strip and butter-tender Filet Mignon for even the heartiest of appetites, while the Rib Crown is carved from the most prized part of the Ribeye and is known for exceptional marbling, flavor and tenderness. Both cuts are grain-fed, aged to perfection and flash-frozen to capture freshness and flavor. For more steak recipes for your Father’s Day celebration, visit www. omahasteaks.com.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Store in an airtight container or zip lock bag for up to 6 months. Note: To prepare cumin and coriander, toast by placing in dry pan over medium heat, shaking pan about 2 minutes until seasonings start to brown. Crush using bottom of pan on cutting board or with mortar and pestle.

Rib Crown Steaks with Roasted Root Vegetables Prep time: 60 minutes Cook time: 15 minutes Total time: 1 hour and 15 minutes Servings: 4 • 4 Rib Crown Steaks • 2 Tablespoons cooking oil • 2 Tablespoons Dad’s Steak Rub (see recipe) Roasted Root Vegetables (see recipe) Thaw steaks overnight in refrigerator or quickly thaw by placing sealed steaks in sink with water for 15 to 30 minutes. Prepare rub and vegetables. Heat grill on high. Blot dry steaks with clean paper towel, then brush each side with cooking oil. Generously season both sides of steaks with rub. Grill steaks to desired doneness. For medium rare steak, grill for about 5 minutes on first side and 3 to 4 minutes on second side. Serve each steak with vegetables.

Using the Proper Grilling Technique For exceptional steaks every time, incorporate these tips from Omaha Steaks Executive Chef Karl Marsh. 1. Clean and heat the grill on high. 2. Blot dry any moisture using a clean paper towel, and then lightly oil the steak before placing it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking. 3. Season the food before grilling. 4. Sear the outside of steaks when grilling. This really helps with the flavor and juiciness. 5. Use tongs or a spatula to turn meat on the grill. Using a fork can damage and dry out the meat. 6. Cover the grill as much as possible during the grilling process. This helps to lock in the grilled flavor and will help prevent flare-ups. 7. Keep a spray bottle with water handy to douse any unexpected flare-ups. 8. Use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side, then grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food. This will give you an evenly cooked product. 9. Place your cooked product on a clean plate. Never place cooked product on the plate you used to transport the raw product to the grill without thoroughly washing it first. 10. Allow your steaks to “rest” for 5 minutes between cooking and eating. This will help retain moisture when you cut into them. Source: Family Features

Roasted Root Vegetables Prep time: 20 minutes | Cook time: 40 minutes Total time: 60 minutes Servings: 4 • 2 Pounds mixed root vegetables, such as carrots, red beets, yellow beets, turnips, celery root, baby purple potatoes and baby gold potatoes • 2 Tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 1 Teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 Teaspoon freshly ground black pepper Heat oven to 400°F. Wash and peel root vegetables. Cut into even size wedges about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick. Toss with olive oil, salt and pepper. Place on foil lined sheet pan. Roast for 30 to 40 minutes or until all vegetables are done, stirring once half way through cooking time. www.absolutelymemorial.com l JUNE 2015

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

B.A. Shepherd:

Investing in Houston

B

orn in Virginia in 1814, Benjamin Armistead Shepherd was arguably the most prominent and enduring money lender in early Houston. Most Texans in the era of the Republic through the end of the Civil War did not support the establishment of chartered banks, but this did not preclude savvy businessmen of the time from operating a private lending system. Men like William Marsh Rice, T.W. House and B.A. Shepherd sold equipment and supplies on credit, imported manufactured goods on commission and advanced cash at the beginning of the growing season, all in exchange for liens on the planter’s crops and lands. They also charged interest or a fee for their services. These men gained considerable wealth, but B.A. Shepherd’s prominence grew beyond most of his colleagues, as he presided over the First National Bank of Houston for nearly 25 years. Shepherd left his home state of Virginia in 1833 and worked his way to Nashville, where he met and married Mary Hobson. The couple traveled to New Orleans and finally to Galveston in 1839, where Shepherd helped organize the mercantile firm of Crawford and Shepherd. He then moved his growing family to Houston to manage the firm’s Houston branch. In 1844, Crawford sold his portion of the partnership to Andrew Jackson

Burke, and the firm became the independent enterprise of Shepherd and Burke. The company did a considerable credit business, and in 1848, Burke bought an entire city block in downtown Houston. In 1854, Shepherd sold his share of the business to Burke and opened his own Shepherd Exchange and Collection office. Shepherd’s business interests expanded beyond banking to steamships, railways and cotton mills. He even formed a company to grade and build a plank road on Washington Avenue. One of his ventures resulted in the establishment of the town of Shepherd, Texas, located 60 miles north of Houston. In 1875, Shepherd traveled to San Jacinto County to build a town on the proposed Houston, East and West Texas Railway. Selecting a location near a former Coushatta Indian village, Shepherd laid out a townsite and depot, which subsequently became a local center for sawmilling and agricultural activities. In his book Historic Houston Streets: The Stories Behind the Names, Marks Hinton noted that it was B.A. Shepherd who gave the city the land for Shepherd Drive. Through all of these efforts, Shepherd became a highly respected business owner and investor. After the Civil War, state and nationally chartered banks were sanctioned for the first time in Texas. In 1866, Shepherd became aware of the impending opening of the First National Bank of Houston with T.M. Bagby at the helm. Rather than remaining competitors, Shepherd merged his private bank with First National Bank in A counter draft from First National Bank of Houston, 1867. This draft for $25 1867. was paid for “family expenses” and is signed by B.A. Shepherd. Image on loan to The Heritage Society from a private collector.

In the beginning, the bank set up shop in Shepherd’s building at Main and Congress. Then, in 1882, the bank purchased the one-half lot and improvements on the southeast corner of Main at Franklin. It was at this corner that First National operated until 1956, when it merged with First City National Bank of Houston. B.A. Shepherd was the bank’s president and director from 1867 until his death in 1891. Three of Shepherd’s sons-in-law, Alexander P. Root, Owen L. Cochran and W. H. Palmer, and Shepherd’s son Frank all worked at the bank. A new First National Bank building was constructed in 1905 with expansions in 1909 and 1925.

This desk was used by B.A. Shepherd during his tenure as president of the First National Bank in Houston. It remained in the family until it was donated to The Heritage Society in 1958. The cane on the desk was inscribed “A.P. Root, Dec. 25, 05. From Employees, First National Bank.”

Today, The Corinthian, an elegant event space, occupies the lower part of the building, and the upper stories are the Franklin Lofts. Shepherd’s greatgrandson, William Kirkland, worked for First National Bank for 36 years, carrying this Houston family banking dynasty well into the 20th century.
