ouston is cheering hard this month as we are on the biggest stage in the world with Super Bowl LI on Sunday, February 5th. I was a huge Oilers fan in the 90s and am now, of course, a Texans Fan. I asked some Memorialites which teams they are obsessed with and for some fun Super Bowl stories. I had no idea our community loves football so much!

Jennifer and Chad Pinkerton with Lara Bell.

Chad PINKERTON PINKERTON Chad

“C

had loves his wife and four children,” said Chad Pinkerton’s wife, Jennifer. “He just might love the Dallas Cowboys a little bit more, at least during a winning season like this past one. Raised in Dallas, he has supported the Cowboys his whole life and is truly a die-hard fan. “Every game, he dresses in full ‘costume,’ as I call it. He dons one of his player jerseys complete with matching shoes, tights, wristbands and other accessories. He sets up in front of his giant screen, iPhone in hand, ready to text naysayers and supporters throughout each play. During it all, the doors to the media room remain closed, and the excitement is felt throughout the house. Chad almost always watches in solitude, shouting boisterously as he sees fit. We are grateful for those doors! “Clients and staff know about his Cowboys obsession too, as he never misses an opportunity to rejoice in a win or relay an anecdote. Our friends all know how football Sunday goes and carefully text their sympathies on a loss or enthusiastically text their congratulations on a win! He can cite any play and any history with as much conviction and energy as he shows in the courtroom. For a man who has most everything, his greatest wish is just to meet Dak Prescott! “All kidding aside, the passion and dedication Chad has for his beloved Cowboys is amazing. I speak in jest about his love for them, yet I am so glad he loves something this much, and by marriage, I can’t help but be a huge fan now too!”

“I

am an only child, and when my dad did not get a boy, I was raised to love sports. I played every sport I could growing up with the help and coaching of my dad. As I got older, football became my passion and our passion together. When I went off to college, my parents got season tickets to the Houston Texans. We went to every home game to cheer them on and themed our tailgates on the team we were playing against. My dad decided it would be fun to see every stadium in the NFL as the Texans played there. My mom and I immediately jumped on board. “Unfortunately, my dad passed away in 2006, and we never got to begin our journey of seeing the stadiums with him, but my mom made it her mission to continue my dad’s idea. We represent our team from the plane ride to our destination to the plane ride home – win or lose. We have met some amazing people and wonderful fans along the way. We try to experience each city for everything it has to offer. “My mom and I both signed up to be volunteers at this year’s Super Bowl and cannot wait to see what Houston has to offer football fans from around the globe. I am super thankful that my dad taught me about this game and helped me develop such a passion. I am looking forward to finishing the tour of the 32 stadiums and being able to go back to my favorites.”

“I

Blair Harmon and dad Philip Stevens.

grew up in Southern Mississippi with a dad who was a huge New Orleans Saints fan and a season ticket holder for as long as I can remember. As I grew older, I adopted his love for the team. Our college teams were rivals, so this worked well for us. After I married and moved away, I converted my husband to a Saints fan, and we joined my dad for several games each season. His tailgate crew consisted of ridiculously good chefs who brought gumbo straight from their restaurants and other die-hard fans. “My dad was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in September 2012. He continued to be the ultimate fan, and after losing his leg from complications from the disease, he sported his Saints prosthetic leg. After losing his battle in April 2014, he left us with one request: to sprinkle his ashes on the field at The Dome. Unfortunately, field tours are no longer given, so I had to come up with another idea. Right before half time, my husband and I walked down from our seats to take a picture in the end zone, and while we were posing, I sprinkled him onto the field. I really did! “My husband and I enjoy returning to The Dome each season and feel my dad’s presence. We created a team for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network’s annual PurpleStride 5K in Houston called Philip’s Who Dat Nation, and I got a Sir Saint tattoo that is so visible, it is almost unnoticeable.”

ootball fanatics – that’s us!” said Amy Lauber. “Mike was raised to know the game inside and out, from watching Notre Dame games with his dad to the Vikings and Packers while in Minnesota and Wisconsin. I call him the sports whisperer. Our favorite team is the Texans through good and bad times. We have missed two games in 16 years and have started traveling to away games. This year, we saw the Texans play in Minneapolis, Denver, Mexico City and Green Bay. We always meet amazing people and represent the Texans in our gear all trip long. “For my 50th birthday, Mike planned a surprise party with close friends that included a chef-served tasting menu from places we have visited around the world. When dessert arrived, we were all having fun, not focusing on the inspiration for each course. Mike turned to me and said, ‘Aren’t you wondering why we have Boston cream pie for dessert?’ He said to turn over my plate, where there were two tickets to go to Boston in the morning to watch the Texans play the Patriots! We had an amazing weekend and met other fans who travel with us to this day. “We have done some crazy things to make sure we are either at each game or in front of the television at kickoff. Once, we drove to Fort Collins, Colorado after school on Friday for a college visit for my daughter and made it back for kickoff on Sunday!”

Roy MOORE MOORE Roy

“My

husband, Roy Moore, is the craziest Dallas Cowboys fan, and I am a Saints and Texans fan!” said Kristie Moore. “We met while living in Dallas, so him being a fan wasn’t surprising to me. However, when we moved to Houston, it was like he had lost his mind! He, his brother, cousin and other friends go to a Cowboys game yearly. At home during football season, there is random screaming during games, and whenever the Cowboys lose, Roy shuts off the lights and TVs and goes to bed! Naturally, as a non-Cowboys fan, I snicker inside. “As the principal of Nottingham Elementary, Roy has gray office walls with a navy blue stripe in the middle, as well as a star, and he has everything imaginable representing the Dallas Cowboys – street signs, a tissue holder, footballs, figurines – you name it! He even has a Cowboys parking sign for his parking space. Each year for the school auction, families bid for the opportunity to dress Roy in their favorite NFL jersey for the day, and it is never the Dallas Cowboys!”

Spring Branch-Memorial Legend

Chris Gilbert

By Andrew Hollan

A

rguably the greatest public or private school athlete to compete in the Spring Branch-Memorial area, Chris Gilbert rose to state and national prominence in football. His family moved to the Spring BranchMemorial area when there was only one elementary school, one middle school and one high school. As a youth, Gilbert loved to swim at a pool off of the Katy Freeway, which was then just a two-lane road. Gilbert’s earliest youth sports experiences were at the Variety Boys Club and at Candace Mossler’s camp in the area now known as the Galleria, where Gilbert played various sports and also excelled at boxing. He played simultaneously for the Spring Branch-Memorial area Pop Warner youth football league, Spring Branch Junior High School Cubs and St. Francis Episcopal Church football team. He also played baseball in the Spring Branch-Memorial Sports Association. One season, Gilbert’s youth football team won every game and allowed no points or touchdowns against them by any opponent. During his years at Spring Branch High School, he was selected and played for Texas in the Oil Bowl versus Oklahoma. He was also a sprinter and broad jumper. We had the opportunity to visit with this hometown legend and talk football.

Andrew Hollan:

Your success in football includes playing for the state title while in high school, being the first National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) player to rush for 1,000 yards in three consecutive years and being recognized as a Heisman Trophy candidate from The University of Texas. You were drafted by the New York Jets in the Joe

16

Olympia in Trinity, Texas. As a college student, I began acquiring land for the camp, getting a bank loan to fund the building of cabins and the hiring of a nurse. The first campers came in 1968. The camp continues to serve hundreds of youth from the Houston area. What do you remember about your days playing football? My track skills were useful during football as I ran back kickoffs, punts and played the running back position. My running style at every level was to not run over people but to keep them off balance by going left or right. To accomplish this, it was critical not to fumble the ball, so Coach Emory Bellard painted one side of the tip of the football and told me to carry it everywhere I went, including my college classes. I am proud that I always would gain an extra half yard by not falling backwards. A funny fact is that I was so relaxed before football games I could sleep up to 10 minutes before kickoff, and then the excitement of the 80,000 fans in the stadium would kick in. Is there anything else you would like the community to know? The fans and positive support from the Spring Branch-Memorial community was really special and will always be a precious memory. It was a great place to go to school and grow up.

AH CG Corby Robertson Jr., who along with Chris was an All-American football player at the University of Texas and established Camp Olympia in 1968, with father-son Earl and Chris Gilbert circa 1968.

Namath era and played professionally with the Continental Football League, Fort Worth Braves. What helped you to accomplish these achievements?

Chris Gilbert: I had a won-

derful mom. She encouraged my sister and me to take tap and other types of dancing, singing, piano and acrobat lessons. My sister and I sang on Houston radio. I grew up in a wonderful community with top-notch schools. Who were your role models, mentors, idols and positive influences while growing up in Spring Branch-Memorial? Slater Martin, an NBA Hall of Famer who played with the St. Louis Hawks and owned Slater’s, a sporting goods store on Long Point. My dad, Earl Gilbert, who was president of the Spring Branch ISD board and played high school basketball with Slater Martin. My grandfather, who was the architect for the San Jacinto Monument. They were all early influences in my life. My football idol was Jim Brown of the Cleveland Browns. What are you proud of in your work career? I am proud of what we have accomplished with Camp

What’s all the dental buzz about Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)? SDF is a clear liquid that can be applied to decay or poorly formed teeth instead of doing fillings. It is applied with a small sponge, and the silver in SDF acts as an antimicrobial agent killing bacteria. It prevents further decay development by delivering concentrated fluoride. It hardens tooth structures, stopping decay or sensitivity. At Smiles For Kids, we think it is a game changer in the future of dentistry!

Why aren’t we using it all the time? Some teeth have too large or too involved cavities to treat without removing the infected tissues. Cavities between the teeth and abscessed teeth cannot be treated with SDF. It also turns affected cavitated tissue black. We use it on many young kids or kids who have medical or behavioral disabilities. Kids with poorly formed permanent 1st molars also can benefit, as we can harden the teeth without cutting on them until they are ready for permanent restorations such as porcelain crowns. Due to the color change, we mostly use it on back teeth.

When Art and Love Collide: Brian and Alisa Murray

A

Alisa and Brian Murray.

mazing is not a strong enough word to describe one of Houston’s most artistic couples, Brian and Alisa Murray of Alisa Murray Photography. The power couple has established a reputation for capturing adorable children, expectant mommies and, most notably, newborns for nearly 20 years. Their unique style and talents with a camera lens has been honed for years to create a signature brand known and sought after internationally.

The Alisa Murray Brand The Alisa Murray brand offers the very best in Fine Art Photography by dedicating a true artistic eye to photography and by building sustainable, professional relationships. A loyal clientele that includes celebrity families, legacy clients and many friends and neighbors have made the solo practice feel more like family. Alisa Murray Photography has its lens trained on a client family’s life journey starting with the beginning of life, birthdays, special holidays and other major milestones. Alisa documents it all in portraiture with egg hunts, visits to the pumpkin patch, sitting with Santa and other moments to remember. Clients receive a very unique and personal experience by being invited into her cozy, artsy and oh so interesting home for photo sessions. Children get to snuggle with Alisa’s pets and eat special treats from her very own kitchen. Parents get to roam her house as if in a museum. A visit to Alisa’s studio is unlike anything else. There, true passion and inspiration are rooted. “Alisa is a gifted photographer,” said Memorial resident

Joyce Huffman. “She works with the family in multiple settings and captures the energy and emotion of each family member. In an era of iPhones and ‘selfies,’ I made a point to find a true artist to capture the beauty of my six-year-old daughter with my 82 year-old mother, and the photos are breathtaking!”

Known for her newborn photography, Alisa Murray’s artwork hangs in Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital.

A Family of Artists Brian and Alisa’s partnership goes back to grade school. They love what they do and keep their clientele close by making them part of the family. Married 27 years, the couple is grateful for the loyalty and trust from their long list of clients who return year after year to document their family legacy in pictures and portraits for generations to come. Think of the couple as “Lucy and Desi,” meaning one cannot work without the other. They finish each other’s sentences in business and are good friends who work together in tandem to create their unique photography style. Alisa is the eye on the camera, while Brian is the magician who puts it all together. As Alisa likes to say, she creates and shoots and becomes “Auntie A” to all of her clients, and Brian magically transforms her images into that signature, stylized brand.

This has really been outstanding for artists such as ourselves. It’s a wonderful honor that our work is proudly displayed in the homes of families all over the world.”

years. For example, her Breast Cancer Survivor calendars and her work capturing pictures and stories of cancer-stricken children in India are just a few. “I wanted to leave the children in India with the most important gift – a portrait of themselves – and I did it. Watching those babies run around with what would may be the only picture they’d ever perhaps have was a great joy. I felt like I was leaving a little piece of me right there.” Alisa’s paintings are also a labor of love. Though not offering a vast body of work, she finishes a few paintings each year. “Once I discussed having a show and perhaps selling some of them, but my children quickly grew possessive of that part of my artistic work. Each of them has secretly laid claim to the paintings they want to take when I am gone. Funny how children observe their environment and have opinions we don’t know as parents until the subject comes up. I had never realized how attached they had become to that part of my work.” Alisa Murray studios and her home are filled to the brim with art. Perhaps the Alisa style is more like Guadí meets Texas Chic? Walls in her studio/home combo are painted in funky, artistic ways, and there is nothing there that the couple or their children have not created themselves. “I often feel, even though I have spent many hours there, it’s as if I am always seeing something new. The walls are filled with paintings and beautifully captured fine art photography.”

22

A Writer’s Legacy As if photography and art aren’t enough, Alisa is also an award-winning writer. Her monthly Living the Sweet Life column for Fort Bend Focus Magazine has been published since 2006. The column delights readers with Alisa’s childhood memories, some of which make them cry and laugh out loud in ways only Alisa can do. This year, Alisa’s plate is full as she awaits the release of two books: What to REALLY Expect When You’re Married! will debut on Amazon this spring, and Auntie A’s Little Book of Shoulds and Should Nots! will be available in the fall. “The years I’ve spent capturing my clients has given me ample opportunity to listen to each of my families who ultimately become good, close friends. While I’m shooting away with my camera, we talk about everything. I have given advice, more than I can remember, on marriage and parenting, and I’ve shared my own experiences as well. Marriage isn’t easy, but it can be a wonderful experience, and I adore my Brian. I adore my children. I adore my friendships and want everyone who I get the opportunity to touch to be uplifted and inspired by what I can give to them whether it is advice, a piece of art, my friendship or all of that. “The book on marriage is what I hope to be a well of advice on what to do right and how to fall in love and

grow more deeply in love as the years go by. It always saddens me when I see people and families of divorce. I’m hoping to be able to inspire others to work at cultivating a mindful life and to live deeply and fully with love for everyone in their lives. “My Should and Should Nots has come out of necessity,” laughed Alisa. “My two kids and each of my ‘babies’ who I have made mine as their portrait artist have asked me for advice on just about everything through the years from how to tie their shoes to how to garden. Some even ask about dating or being bullied. They share things they wouldn’t share with their parents. That’s why they call me Auntie A. They are comfortable telling me things, and more importantly, they are listening. So this little guidebook allows me to leave them with advice about all sorts of things. I figure this way they will always have my opinion on ‘stuff,’ and they can take that and give it to their children when they grow up and become mommies and daddies themselves. I see this as just another extension of my legacy and life’s work in sharing and taking care of people.”

“When it’s time for my family’s annual session, it is a happy day,” Simmons said. “My son loves Alisa. They connect. He looks forward to seeing her and considers her to be a good friend. She’s more than that, of course. She’s family. We love her that much!” Alisa Murray Photography can be reached at www.alisamurray.com or 713-598-2207.

Do you have enough money for veterinary care and supplies? Is there enough space in your home for exercise? It is good to put some thought into whether or not your life is compatible with a pet’s needs before getting one. If you live in a small apartment, a fish or cat might be more appropriate than a Labrador. I took it to the barn to be with the rest of the chickens, and I never saw it again. That was terrible. I looked for that little pink chick for weeks. What is the lesson? When thinking of giving a pet as a gift, make sure the recipient is ready to care for the animal. Owning a pet should be taken seriously. There are some people who don’t care to ever have the responsibility of having a pet. Then there are the rest of us who would love to have lots, and we have never met an animal we haven’t liked. Child See, Child Do

I

can’t tell you how many times I have been frustrated by my child behaving better in public than he does at home. Call me crazy, but it always seems children are at their sweetest when at a friend’s house, while they reserve all of their high-octane rebelliousness for our humble abode. But the truth is that I’m not crazy, and scientists were kind enough to prove my sanity. In a peer reviewed study published in Psychological Science, a group of researchers placed toddlers in front of three boxes. The preschooler could put a toy in any box, but if he put it in one particular box, he got a chocolate as a reward. After conditioning the child to always put the toy in the same box, the researchers had that child watch several other children put treats in the other boxes without getting treats. When the first child was then asked to place the toy in a box again while their peers watched, they overwhelmingly chose the box that the other kids chose, knowing they would not get a treat. Translation? Kids value acceptance and commonality with their peers more than they do the rewards that adults provide.

28

The study went a step further and discovered that the child was more likely to choose a non-reward box if he saw three peers choose it once each rather than if he saw one peer chose it three times. So, the more friends they see do it, the more likely they are to do the behavior. Thus, the environment parents place on their children has more power over their behavior than the threats or rewards that parents may offer. Interesting, huh? For me, it is important to use this technique with the kids in our programs. When a preschooler is misbehaving, it is tempting to rely on either individual punishment or tangible rewards, but the most effective way to change that child’s behavior is actually to let the child see other kids doing the behavior correctly as much as possible. The best way to do this is turn the behavior into a game with rewards. For example, we play Magic Trash Treasure. After a game or craft when the floor is a mess, we get the kids to collect as much trash off of the floor as they can and show it to a coach before throwing it away. Whoever picks up the “magic treasure” piece gets to lead the line to the next station. If any child isn’t helping clean up, coaches redirect them not with promises of treats or punishment, but rather by pointing out all the other kids doing the activity, and even having other kids ask the child to join in. Parents can apply this in countless ways. Whether it is potty training a child, breaking a bad eating habit or encouraging sharing with others, exposing a child to peers who exhibit the desired behavior is an invaluable tool. This doesn’t stop with preschoolers. In fact, peer pressure is one of the most powerful factors in a child’s decision making process all the way up through high school. With that in mind, parents can ensure their child gets off to the best start by partnering with like-minded parents and friends to create an environment of positive peer pressure.

Campbell Wellness Center Talks About Childhood Obesity: Healthy Eating Tips for Kids At the Campbell Wellness Center (CWC), the goal is to help individuals practice a healthy lifestyle that can stick with them for life. Even though childhood obesity is decreasing, it is still a major problem in the United States. Here are some healthy eating tips for kids. First, it’s important to start off the day with breakfast! According to Eatright, there are many benefits to eating breakfast, because it provides carbohydrates to maintain blood sugar levels, primes muscles and sends essential nutrients to the cells. Research has also shown that breakfast consumers have higher school attendances, less tardiness and fewer hunger-induced stomach aches in the morning. Children can concentrate better, solve problems more easily and have better muscle coordination. Secondly, another way to maintain healthy eating lifestyle is to limit going out. Typically, most restaurants have doubled, even tripled, their portion sizes. Research has shown adolescents are susceptible to overeating when eating out, which can lead to obesity. Lastly, it is important to have a well-balanced diet. This means it is important to portion meals properly. Large plates and big cups encourage individuals to eat and drink more. Campbell Wellness Center is located at 1446 Campbell Road, Suite 200 in Houston. For more information, call 281-740-4550. See ad on page 1.

Love and Marriage . . . and Love During Divorce?

“There is no remedy for love but to love more.” – Henry David Thoreau

By Nancy L. Rommelmann Family Law Attorney

Many readers enjoyed this from last year, and I think it’s worth the read again.

Y

ou’ve heard the phrase, “Love and marriage go together like a horse and carriage,” but can love be shown during a divorce?

Consider the following ways to love while going through a divorce: 1. Love yourself:

Take care of yourself. Do healthy activities that make you feel good about yourself. Exercise, get involved with your church or spend time with good friends. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t indulge in addictive behavior. Spend your energy on positive pursuits that allow and promote personal growth. Daily evaluate your motives and actions and hold yourself accountable to honorable behavior, which actually results in you gaining power with your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

FAMILY LAW ATTORNEY

2. Love your children:

Children don’t want to be in the middle of a divorce. Be sensitive to your children, their needs and what they are going through. Give them the gift of your time and undivided attention during this difficult time. Show the other parent respect while in the presence of the children.

3. Love your soon-to-be ex-spouse:

Okay, maybe it’s difficult to show love to your soon-to-be ex-spouse, but you can show respect and be nice. Take the high road. Don’t be petty. Do the right thing for the right reasons, particularly as it relates to your children who are subject to the divorce. Your children deserve to see this behavior from both of their parents. This is hard work at a personal level, due in part to the mix of emotionally charged issues that come up throughout a divorce, but do the “work”… you won’t regret it. “There needn’t be ‘broken’ families, defined by divorce decrees and the like. Families can be defined and bound by love and other matters of the heart.”

& QA Q:

Baby Stool

101

WHAT DOES RED MEAN?

Tints of red in your baby’s poop can indicate a fresh source of blood. You should have it checked out immediately, especially if it is correlated with irritability or vomiting. These signs could represent an intestinal obstruction. A milk allergy could also cause a baby’s poop to have blood.

EXPERT: Dr. Stan Spinner, Texas Children’s Pediatrics and Texas Children’s Urgent Care Chief Medical Officer. Children do not come with how-to handbooks, but from day one, they depend on their parents to understand what they need. With each passing day, parents get better at knowing which cry means what, which food is best and even which diapers to use. But what about your baby’s poop? Is your baby’s stool trying to tell you something your baby needs you to know? A baby’s poop is actually a great tool for parents when it comes to their baby’s health. The color of newborn stool can be anywhere from light to dark brown, but other colors, including a mustard color early on, is normal. There are some colors that can be a sign your baby should visit the pediatrician. As babies grow, the color of their poop will change. Foods or liquids often affect the color, and older babies tend to have light to dark brown stools.

Q:

WHAT DOES BLACK MEAN?

If you see black, that typically is a result of old, dried blood. Dark black stool may represent blood from the upper gastrointestinal tract, and this should also be addressed quickly.

Q:

WHAT DOES WHITE MEAN?

White in a baby’s poop is a possible indication of an issue with their biliary system and should be reported to your pediatrician. Although the color of your baby’s poop can mean many things, the most important part is the consistency. A baby’s poop should be soft and not cause the baby any discomfort while they are passing a stool, although many babies will have watery stools and may cry while passing a stool normally. Who knew a baby’s poop was filled with so much information? If you ever have questions or concerns about your baby’s stool, you can always call your pediatrician for guidance.

Newspring Enters 2nd Decade of Mission in Spring Branch

What a difference 10 years makes! In September 2006, Newspring incorporated as a 501(c)(3) organization with a vision of providing economic opportunities for at-risk students and families in Spring Branch. Over the past 10 years, Newspring’s creative visual arts and business development programs have provided a path for thousands of Spring Branch Independent School District (SBISD) students and aspiring entrepreneurs to translate their dreams and talents into rewarding careers. “Newspring was created to open doors of opportunity to succeed, based on hard work, and to do so without providing a hand out,” explained Robert Westheimer, founder and chairman. A visual arts program created in partnership with SBISD cre-

44

ates pathways for talented art students to earn a career in the visual arts – painting, graphic design, photography, architecture and more. Its 10 year history has included career mentoring from professional artists, the operation of five local art studios, annual art sales and college scholarships. Over 25 of Newspring’s graduates are now in college, most of whom had no dream of higher education without Newspring. “Newspring has been an inspiring T-2-4 partner bringing hope, confidence and mentorship to thousands of students across SBISD,” said SBISD Community Relations Officer Linda Buchman. “Our students have grown as artists, and many have now graduated from college thanks to Newspring’s support. Congratulations on a decade of service to our community!” A second program aimed at adults assists would-be entrepreneurs to develop and implement their business plan. Teaming with Houston Community College’s Spring Branch campus, Newspring created a Business Plan Competition that includes comprehensive training provided by Newspring, as well as mentoring from over 60 business professionals on Newspring’s team. Over its nine-year history, the competition has seen 180 contestant teams compete for over $200,000 in seed capital. As a result, 12 new businesses have been spawned. Newspring originated at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church and continues to receive support and volunteers from local churches. “What we do is an important part of our Christian witness,” said Westheimer. “We believe in the talents and abilities of the children, youth and adults we serve.” For more information, visit newspringcenter.org.

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY By The Heritage Society

Protecting the Past: Historic Preservation in Historic Houston

The Kellum-Noble House was purchased by the City of Houston with the land for the first city park in 1899. Photograph from the permanent collection of The Heritage Society.

T

hough Houston has a reputation for favoring new construction over preservation, Houstonians have long had an eye on the City’s historic architecture. A 1901 newspaper article gives insight into one of the earliest successful historic preservation efforts in the City’s history. According to a July 28, 1901 article in the Houston Daily Post, preservation was on the minds of several women’s organizations in the City as a group met to discuss strategies to save the 1779 Old Stone Fort in Nacogdoches, which was later dismantled in 1902. At the meeting, Emma Richardson Cherry – representing the Houston Art League – raised an issue much closer to home. She had heard that the City planned to demolish the old Noble Homestead in City Park, now Sam Houston Park. The 1847 brick building, now known as the Kellum-Noble House, had been included in the 1899 land purchase for Houston’s first municipal park. A special committee had been formed to oversee park improvements, which included repair and renovation of the old house. According to the article’s author, Cherry “fully appreciates the value of the homestead as representing a type of Southern architecture fast disappearing before the rage for things less comfortable, less artistic but more

48

modern.” She urged those present to assist her in saving the building, “the one house of its kind in the city,” and the women formed a special committee to appeal to City Council. While it turned out there had been no intention of razing the building, the committee succeeded in securing City Council’s agreement to ensure the building’s exterior would not be changed when it was renovated. The committee went so far as to visit the house during construction, and the foreman there assured them, “I told the mayor that wooden pillars would last longer, but he said you wanted brick pillars, just like the first ones, and brick it has to be.” Surprisingly, the number of columns appears to have

Emma Richardson Cherry and her husband, D.B. Cherry, arranged for the relocation of The Nichols-Rice-Cherry House to its third location on Fargo Street in 1897. Photograph from the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division.

been reduced at this time, but the appearance of each column remained the same. At this time, Cherry lived in another historic home, originally built in 1850 for Ebenezer Nichols and later occupied by William Marsh Rice. Cherry had bought the house in 1897 and moved it from its downtown location to Fargo Street in the Fairview Addition. The move saved the house from demolition after its downtown lot had been sold for a new, two-story commercial building. The commercial building itself was later demolished, and the Harris County Family Law Center now occupies the site. Today, the Kellum-Noble House and the Nichols-Rice-Cherry House sit across the street from each other in Sam Houston Park. Both were rescued again in the 1950s by the Harris County Heritage and Conservation Society, which is now The Heritage Society. The Kellum-Noble House remains in its original location, and the Nichols-RiceCherry House was moved to the park in 1959. While these historic homes now tell stories of early life in Houston through The Heritage Society, they also remind us of the Houstonians who have long endeavored to protect them for future generations.
