I HULL

Discover Culture Every four years one innovative city is chosen to be the UK City of Culture, and in 2017 that city is Hull! Here are some of the places in the UK which share the same love of culture as we do.

EDINBURGH Every Summer, Edinburgh hosts comedy, music, dance and theatre events that spill into the streets.

LIVERPOOL In 2008, Liverpool was the European Capital of Culture, meaning a year-long festival of fun things!

DERRY~LONDONDERRY NEWCASTLE

In 2013, Derry~Londonderry was the first UK City of Culture and they got it off to a great start.

The most famous sculpture in the UK, The Angel of the North, is a very tall steel angel with wings spanning 52 metres wide!

LONDON STONEHENGE People come from all over the world to see these mysterious, giant rocks which have been standing for nearly 5,000 years.

CORNWALL You can explore a rainforest and the world’s most exotic plant species under the Eden Project’s huge domes.

In 2012, London hosted the Olympics and built an impressive new park where the best athletes across the world came to compete.

Hull, Glorious Hull!

Years ago if you needed a quick dash to the loo, you could have stopped by King Billy’s statue as it used to house a public toilet underneath.

Smelly Billy!

Red telephone boxes are cool.

Cream ones are even better. Guess what colour Hull’s telephone boxes are? A cool cream of course.

The first ever flight from England to Australia was... no, not made by a bird! It was a lady called Amy Johnson, born in... yep you’ve guessed it, HULL.

If you were born in Hull, you are extra super lucky. Why? Because you are called a Hullensian.

Clive Sullivan was one of the greatest rugby players in the 1970s. He was admired for being really fast on the pitch, and scored 28 tries in 28 matches. Where was he from? HULL of course.

The Land of Green Ginger is not a land. Nor is it green. Nor does it have ginger growing there. It is in fact the name of a street in Hull.

Now that’s odd.

Our beloved city produces 20 million Yorkshire puddings in a week.

A GIRL,,A TOAD A girl met a toad in the city of Hull, Those toads get about, you know.

The toad explained that cities aren’t dull, As Hull city centre would show.

Their first port of call was Hull City Hall In Queen Victoria Square.

This magnificent hall hosts events great and small, You can see almost anything there.

AND A CITY “Now here’s Beverley Gate in the old city wall,” Said the Toad. “It is part of our history.”

Asked the girl, “Why’s the part you can see so small?”

“Ah, the rest,” replied Toad, “is a mystery”.

Then on to Queens Gardens they made their way, As Toad thought they needed a rest.

Said he,“I think that’s enough for one day.

For our next trip we’ll head to the west”.

COOL HAND LUKE !

HULL HERO Once upon a time in Hull there was a child called Luke Campbell, whose dream was to be the best boxer in the land. His grandad was a famous Irish boxing champion and he thought to himself, “I’ll be just as good as him.”

He trained hard every day after school and on weekends.

And he trained a bit more. And a bit more… until he was ready to take to the ring. Guess what happened once he started boxing? He kept losing. He lost six out of his first ten fights. Oh dear!

He was ready to try another career but his family were having none of it. “Giving up is not what a boxer does!” they reminded him. So he trained. And trained a bit more.

Until.... 2012 and the Olympic Games.

Our friend Luke, now also known as Coolhand, amazed everyone by winning the first round, the second round, the quarter finals, and, yes, the final! Luke is now a proud GOLD medallist, the first one in Hull in over 100 years!

YAYAYAYAYAYAY!* The whole city celebrated by painting one telephone box gold in his honour.

Luke said about winning, “I thank all the people of Hull and my family for their support. Each of them carried me and I can’t thank them enough.”

Giving up? Never!

This is your chance to turn into a Hull maker and build your very own Hull phone box pencil holder. How? Here’s how.

You will need:

four mini cereal boxes cream or white paper

• • •

black paper scissors glue

• • •

pencil ruler pen

Take two of your cereal boxes and glue them together.

Do the same with the other two.

Glue one cereal box pair to the other, bottoms together.

Cut a piece of A3 cream or white coloured paper to the height of your box stack. You could use two sheets of A4 paper instead.

Wrap your boxes in the paper, gluing each side as you go.

On your black paper, draw a rectangle 5×10cm and divide into 2cm strips. Repeat three more times, so you have four rectangles.

Cut out two of your rectangles and cut them into strips.

Take the other two black paper rectangles, but before you cut them into strips, draw a line 5mm in from either side. When you cut them into strips, cut these end pieces off.

Arrange the strips on the longer sides of the phone box.

Find a cup, or other round object, slightly wider than your phone box. Use it to draw a curved roof at the top of the phone box on all four sides.

Cut four strips of white paper, and on two of them write ‘telephone’.

On the other two strips, write your own name. Glue them above the windows on all four sides of your phone box.

Your Hull telephone box desk tidy is now ready to use. Fill it up with all your pens and pencils!

Glue the strips in an evenly spaced row on the shorter sides of your phone box. These will be your windows!

Use a thick grey or black pen to ink in your roof.

Hull is not the only city to celebrate culture in 2017. The City of Aarhus (Denmark) will be having its own celebrations as the European Capital of Culture in 2017. Write a message to a penpal in Aarhus to let them know what you love the most about Hull.
